4 out of 5 stars CONCISE; WITH A WIDE PARASITOLOGY SCOPE.......2003-03-22

This "Human Parasitology" text provides a balanced introductory view, as it concerned the interactive association between various parasites and their hosts. Its concise and reader-friendly format is a big plus: as it ensured that anyone who reads it will understand the message.
This book is clinically relevant. Its carefully selected contents were designed in such a way that will appeal to students of Zoology, Medicine, Veterinary medicine, Microbiology, Medical laboratory science, and Agriculture.
Discussed in details are various intestinal parasites like: Nematodes, Cestodes, and Trematodes. It also took care of many pathogenic protozoa like: Plasmodium and Entamoeba species. And, there are well-written chapters, which thoroughly analyzed both the Laboratory Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases and the capabilities of various Antiparasitic Agents.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-10-06

This book is fantastic. The pictures are of the highest quality. This book is a must have for any health professions graduate student!

4 out of 5 stars easy to use illustrated anatomy atlas.......2007-09-23

This anatomy atlas comes in pretty handy. The pictures are usually very descriptive and detailed, and even though they are illustrated rather than photographed, they are quite accurate. This is a good atlas for the beginner anatomist. I am using it as a study aid for my college anatomy course and I feel like it's doing the job. Compared to other atlases I've looked at, it is pretty good at giving different angles of perspective of the anatomical structures depicted, which makes applying the information to a 3D form easier.

5 out of 5 stars Free with SOMA!.......2007-09-09

Sometimes SOMA gives a free one for purchasing a membership, which is cheaper than the book. Check before buying.

5 out of 5 stars Atlas of Human Anatomy (Netter).......2007-09-05

This atlas has excellent, colorful drawings showing the anatomy of the human body. It includes the same region from different angles and perspectives. It is organized by system and region and has an excellent index in the back. It is a MUST when studying Anatomy and Physiology and can accompany many Physiology texts.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book for undergrads.......2007-08-30

Took a physio course and this was required. I aced that class by reading this book very carefully. The writing is not terribly dry like some textbooks, although don't expect anything thrilling either! The graphics, I thought, were what really helped me understand the steps and processes. Therefore, if you're truly a graphic learner, I'd recommend this. If I had to make a complaint, it'd be that the author and editors should add more pictures. Also, this is most likely for undergrads/ beginners...not health professional students.

        2 out of 5 stars Vander's text is better.......2005-07-22

This book was required in a general physiology course I took because the teacher was the author. I had previously taken a human physiology course which used Vander's text. Vander's illustrations and explanations were much more helpful, especially on the difficult topic of cardiac physiology.

5 out of 5 stars Best Physiology Book on the Market.......2005-04-15

It is clear that Silverthorn wrote this book with the physiology student in mind. It is evident that the purpose of the book is to help teach all that physiology embodies; not simply be a reference for factoids.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very hard to read.......2005-08-31

This is my required textbook for my Advanced Physiology class. This book is ridiculous! It is not the subject matter, but the textbook is written poorly and it is very hard to read. My school also have "Textbook of Medical Physiology" by Guyton on reserve for us to use as a supplemental resource, and Guyton book is much better in providing information in clear, and understandable manner. I regret wasting my money on this book, which otherwise could have been used to have a copy of Guyton book myself. Save your money, and look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars The best one out there.......2005-04-08

As a first year medical student, I found this book in my school library and gradually started using it more until I bought it. It's true that as the semester progresses, you can start to feel very lost, and you need the support of a good reference book which will slowly walk you through the material. In my opinion, this book is the best one out there for that purpose.

The main other book in this category is Berne and Levy, but I found that Johnson is much more readable and clear. I would say it's especially good in the cardiovascular section, and maybe not so good in the pulmonary section. Its greatest strength is the text. It's true that the pictures are a bit roughly put-together.

However, responding to one of the other reviewers, it is obviously not a reasonable criticism to say that this book has "only blue and black figures". Berne and Levy has only green and black figures, and anyway, most of the figures are graphs so what do you need full color for? Furthermore, many educators say that adding too much color makes a textbook distracting and harder to study from.

If a student is not ready for the level of difficulty in Johnson, they should turn to the "Netter Atlas of Human Physiology" and to "Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple", and then return to Johnson for the rigorous version. I often did this myself and I found that the pictures in the Netter atlas, combined with the text in Johnson, made a very good study guide.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's printed on.......2002-08-28

This textbook was our "required text" during first year medical school. I always assumed that bribery of some sort resulted in this situation, as I cannot find any redeeming qualities of this book except that it makes an excellent doorstop. Why is this book a waste of your time? Under the assumption that you are a medical student, let me tell you: it's way too detailed for any medical student to dream of ever learning during first year physiology. Let's face it- we have a lot to learn in an extremely short amount of time, and the time must be rationed wisely. Most students will never have the time or patience to sit and spend hours reading about the mathematics of diffusion (example). Some great, useful physiology textbooks are "Principles of Physiology" by Berne and Levy (the thinner paperback) and Guyton & Hall as a reference book. Don't waste your time with the Johnson.

1 out of 5 stars Desperate Students Only!!.......2002-01-05

While not the avid "reviewer" type, I thought it necessary to warn others about this text. Purchasing this book as an "optional" text for my undergraduate physiology course, I expected that it would provide clear explanations of the processes being covered in lectures. I was first disappointed in flipping through to discover that the book only includes a few diagrams all of which are entirely composed of blue and or black ink. Then, hoping to find clear explanations inside the small type, journal style, marginless and endless paragraphs, I was again disappointed.

Halfway through my full year course I am searching for more options as this book fails to help me in those desperate moments when lecture notes just don't seem to make sense. This book goes into lengthy detail with mediocre summaries, such that the reader gets lost in details (and the neverending sentences) long before any understanding of the topic occurs. The lack of diagrams leaves no other option other than finding another source.

Any students out there?? Find another book! Any GOOD text will get you through, with all the essential information you need for both personal interest and for exams.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise.......2000-11-02

Most students will find that learning physiology from a textbook can be quite a chore. Pure physiology books are usually so packed full of tiny text and incomprehensible diagrams that most people will be either beside themselves with panic or comatose after just a few pages. The authors of Essential Medical Physiology seem to have realised these facts and have produced a book which differs significantly from others in the field. The text is marginally larger than in comparable books and the chapters are thoroughly indexed and summarised. In short, the authors seem to be refreshingly in tune with the medical student's needs. Explanations are written in an almost informal manner and reach the level of complexity exactly appropriate for a medical degree. Processes students traditionally struggle with (such as the countercurrent exchange system in the nephron) are presented clearly and lucidly with extremely accessible accompanying diagrams that take you through the arguments step-by-step. Essential Medical Physiology also tackles any feelings of apathy towards the preclinical teaching by continually supplying the reader with `Clinical Notes' which flag-up the importance of understanding the physiological mechanisms to the practise of clinical medicine. The figures are extremely clear and lucid throughout, despite being presenting in a two-tone blue and black format. Diagrams of this quality, however, require a large amount of space and areas slightly off the beaten track of core medical physiology have been cut to a minimum. The reader will find explanations of intracellular processes, such as protein synthesis, extremely brief - but it is not a medical physiology book that one would immediately turn to for this information. In summary, when lost in the jungle that is preclinical physiology, it is depressingly often that the book you turn to for guidance is not only ignorant of the direction you should take but doesn't even seem to speak your language. Essential Medical Physiology will not only point you in the right direction, it will draw you a map and advise you on the best guest houses for when you get out. It is a refreshingly clear book in both text and diagrams.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated and Jaded.......2004-03-04

This book is a nice overview of various options available to those having difficulty conceiving. Unfortunately, this field changes quickly, and since it's publication it's very outdated. Techniques she discusses are now rarely used because newer/more effective treatments have been established. Also, her slant against fertility treatments (as she admits in the preface)is obvious throughout the book. Finally, the author's understanding of research appears limited. Specifically, she fails to consider that IVF pregnancies are not at higher risk of miscarriage - maternal age is the risk factor. It just so happens that those who receive IVF treatments are generally older.

          Book Description

It is now a requirement of both private and commercial pilot syllabus that trainees understand how flying affects them both physically and mentally. This helps reduce the risks of flying and maintains personal fitness, which is essential for pilots. From 1999, a revised European JAR syllabus has introduced new requirements on the subject. This book has been substantially rewritten to take account of these.
