Book Description
Mass Spectrometry Data Analysis in Proteomics is an in-depth guide to the theory and practice of analyzing raw mass spectrometry (MS) data in proteomics. As MS is a high throughput technique, proteomic researchers must attend carefully to the associated field of data analysis, and this volume outlines available bioinformatics programs, algorithms, and databases available for MS data analysis. General guidelines for data analysis using search engines such as Mascot, Xtandem, and VEMS are provided, with specific attention to identifying poor quality data and optimizing search parameters. Several different types of MS data are discussed, followed by a description of optimal methods for conversion of raw data into peak lists for input to search engines. Choosing the most accurate and complete databases is emphasized, and a report of available sequence databases is included. Methods for assembling expressed sequence tags (ESTs) into assembled nonredundant databases are provided, along with protocols for further processing the sequences into a format suitable for MS data. Mass Spectrometry Data Analysis in Proteomics describes publicly available applications whenever possible.

Customer Reviews:
Will it be translated into Chinese ?.......2005-11-07
After reading "The Expanding Role of Mass Spectrometry in Biotechnology", I believe it should be recommended to more students including undergraduates and graduate students majoring in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, or related areas. And it would be a helpful reference for students who have some basic knowledge about MS and would like to learn more about its current development and applications. For myself as a graduate student in analytical chemistry it concisely explained and summarized the different areas of MS and provided a comprehensive view on its development in bioanalytical science. Moreover, it is a good text book as it is easy to understand and the questions at the end of each chapter are good guides for students to master key pionts. Last month, I used this book to educate my roomate, a PhD candidate in organic chemistry, on the ionization principles of ESI. The great images and examples helped her a lot . So, the question is... will Gary Siuzdak translate it into Chinese to make it more easily available to other Chinese students!
An excellent textbook for mass spec and proteomics beginners.......2004-12-04
An advantageous read for the mass spectrometry novice! It is definitely inspiring for those who are interested in biotechnology. This book is an instrumental resource for those who run a mass spectrometry core facility, like me, in order to educate other customers who are interested in working with mass spec. Gary Siuzdak takes such a specialized topic and methodology and breaks it down quite nicely for readers to receive a more concise background on this technology. I highly recommend this book to biologists, chemists, physicists, and biochemists.
Empower your biological research.......2004-01-28
Mass spectrometry is playing an increasingly important role in biological research due to its extremely high sensitivity, incredible resolving power and compatibility with high throughput assays. The prominent position of mass spectrometry today is due in part to fast paced technical innovations that have resulted in a range of highly sensitive and versatile instruments. The newest version of the Siuzdak text, "The Expanding Role of Mass Spectrometry in Biotechnology", distills this challenging topic to its essence, allowing scientists and students alike to understand the basic concepts and essential requirements of the most commonly applied mass spectrometry techniques. Mastery of this well presented and easily read material will empower biologists to expand their research horizons. This text deserves a spot on every biomedical researcher's bookshelf.
An excellent mass spectrometry reference.......2004-01-14
The Expanding Role of Mass Spectrometry in Biotechnology is the book that the biotechnology field has needed for years. It accurately covers the basics yet illustrates the most advanced ideas of possible applications. "The Expanding Role of MS ..." describes the current major areas of mass spectrometry applications such as protein characterization, pharmacokinetics, and high throughput screening. With interesting examples, clear explanations, and major references, "The Expanding Role of MS ..." provides an excellent reference for academic and industrial needs. The format and the examples make this book the perfect teaching tool for students or scientists wanting to better understand the principles as well as the potential roles of mass spectrometry in biotechnology. I have recommended it for scientists within our company or anyone interested in the capabilities of modern mass spectrometry.
An essential, well-written text for Mass Spec and Biotech.......2003-09-17
Mass spectroscopy is one of the most useful techniques in biotechnology, especially proteomics. The identification of drug metabolites, synthesis products and protein and protein fragments is a central activity in many types of research projects. Small molecules and larger macromolecules can be analyzed, both for molecular weight and their structure. The popularity of mass spectrometric analysis in biotechnology has soared over the last decade.
There have been new developments in mass spec, including hybrid instruments that combine MALDI (Matrix-assisted laser desorption) with ESI electrospray, new ion trap instruments, and many developments such as high-throughput analysis and mass spec for clinical diagnostics. This book serves as both an update to Dr. Siuzdak's first book "Mass Spectrometry for Biotechnology" and really, serves as a replacement since the original text was published in 1996.
The chapters include:
1. Ionization and the Mass Spectrometer
2. Mass Analyzers
3. Practical Aspects of Biomolecular Analysis
4. Peptide and Protein Analysis
5. Protein Profiling
6. Protein Structure characterization
7. Nucleic acid, carbohydrates and steroids
8. High throughput analysis
9. Pharmacokinetics
10. Mass Spectrometry in Action (applications)
For instructors in analytical chemistry courses at the college or graduate level, the book is a useful text with questions at the end of the chapters to be used as review. These are not in-depth questions, but they are a good tool for the self-directed student to check his or her comprehension. The later chapters are heavy on applications such as carbohydrate and oligonucleotide and steroid analysis, as well as pharmacokinetics. There are many illustrations, well-drawn and clear. This compact, well-written and useful primer should be on the shelf of anyone doing mass spec in biotechnology, anyone studying analytical chemistry or really, anyone in biotechnology.

Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy
ASIN: 1588295710 |
Book Description
Quantitative Proteomics by Mass Spectrometry, from the Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, is a compendium of cutting-edge protocols for quantitative proteomics, and presents the most significant methods used in the field today. The focus on mass spectrometry (MS) is integral, as MS has, and will continue to be, an essential tool in proteomics for studying complex biological systems and human diseases. This volume, written and compiled by leading quantitative proteomic experts, is an indispensable resource in the search for novel biomarkers.
Quantitative Proteomics by Mass Spectrometry presents several innovative MS quantitative procedures, including a variety of methods for introducing isotopic labels and quantifying post-translational modifications. Some of these methods include growing an organism in isotope-enriched media, performing trypsin proteolysis in the presence of 18O-water, reacting protein samples with isotopically labeled reagents, quantifying relative amount of proteins without the use of any isotopic labels. Attention is also given to state-of-the-art techniques for the characterization of the phosphoproteome and tandem MS for detection of inborn errors of metabolism. Specifically, the procedure for determinations of enzymatic activity could be used for large-scale screening of newborns. The protocols in this volume expand both the breadth and depth of readily available methods for quantitative proteomic researchers using MS.

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction of Mass Spectrometry.......2007-05-14
Easy to understand, give the useful information for who are not familiar with MS and if you are graduate student who taking MS class, you have to read this book.
Well-written excellent reference or short text on bio MS.......2006-04-05
Whether you are a biochemist working in the field of biotechnology, or an analytical instrument engineer, Siuzdak's compact text makes for easy reading and a quick way to bone up on most of the MS techniques being used today in biotechnology.
The second edition is a big improvement--better illustrations and graphics (especially the ones for ESI-MUX, high throughput analysis and MALDI and Q-TOF.) Just about every technique and instrument type were covered except for a couple of rare ones I could think of. The range of chapters covers the mass analyzer types then covers the use of various analyzers in pharmacokinetics, molecular analysis, proteins, peptides, nucleic acids and carbohydrates, and high throughput screening.
If you are a professor of analytical chemistry, I would recommend Siuzdak's book for your class. It is well-written, easy to read and covers the subject well. This book would be a welcome desk reference for most scientists who use the services of a mass spectroscopist for their work. There are a few articles on mass spec analysis of steroids, its use in disease diagnosis and a good glossary in the back. Highly recommended as a good basic text.

Customer Reviews:
Should be on any biotechnology practicioner's shelf.......2003-08-28
I love this book. I spent years selling GC-MS and LC-MS, then worked on software applications. But coming from a biology background, I appreciated the simple yet thorough introduction in Siuzdak's text for the applications commonly used in biotechnology. This is an excellent, well-written introductory text. I recommend it highly.
A practicing MA biotech user.......2002-08-14
A well written book that clearly explains the basics in addition to interesting examples of advanced applications.
Excellent book for basic FAB, MALDI, and ESI.......2001-10-17
This book is easy to read and packed with information. I especially like the table of different kinds of compounds and which ionization technique is the best for each of them. It is obvious that the author has actually run mass spectrometers, and he gives several good tips.
review.......2001-04-26
A very good book for the beginner in mass spectrometry. I've used it in numerous classes and the feedback from the students has been very positive.
REVIEW.......2001-04-24
Siuzdak has written a useful book for the novice or a student without a background in biological mass spectrometry. The book's small size and concise treatise, however, gives rise to many trite and overly simplistic explanations of aspects of the field and some errors. Consider, for example, page 37 that describes that a limitation of magnetic mass analyzers is their relatively "low" resolution. This is contradicted in Table 2.1 where a correct representation of the resolution is made. Also on page, Siuzdak describes the "physics behind" ion trap and conventional quadrupole analyzers as being "similar" when ion motion and dynamics in each analyzer is quite different. A textbook to be read with caution!
