The Human Brain During the Second Trimester (Atlas of Human Central Nervous System Development)
Shirley A. Bayer , and Joseph Altman Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0849314224 |
Book Description
The brain in the second trimester, the subject of Volume 3, is nearing anatomical maturity throughout the brainstem. In contrast, the neurogenesis and neuronal migration are still in progress in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. Consequently, the authors chose to focus on the migration, sojourning, and settling of the neuronal populations belonging to these immature structures. These observations can help researchers develop a better understanding of normal brain development at this formative stage. In this volume, the authors offer consideration of a new concept regarding human cortical development: the identification of the stratified transitional field (STF), which continues to play an important role in later stages. Until recently regarded as simply an intermediate and transitional layer of little significance, modern imaging techniques have shown that it is in the STF where cortical neural connections are first specified. Among other salient points, the development of this field may well bring to light those disruptions during development that lead to cerebral palsy.

Health Issues for Women of Color: A Cultural Diversity Perspective
Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0803973128 |
Book Description
Focusing on African American, Hispanic/Latina, Asian/Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and American Indian/Alaskan Native women, Health Issues for Women of Color presents a multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach to the major health concerns of today's women of color. The chapters address topics such as domestic violence, anxiety, drug abuse, mental health, sexism, and racism, as well as the unique problems of the growing population of women of color who are homeless. In this valuable resource, the contributors examine the strengths of women of color; identify emerging health concerns, research needs, and key policy issues; and highlight the importance of accurate data collection from diverse subgroups. The book demonstrates how much needs to be done to bring parity to health care for women of color and also provides insight into the importance of cultural sensitivity and competence in increasing access to health care. Students, health care professionals, researchers, and policymakers who desire to see equity in health care access and delivery will find Health Issues for Women of Color an important addition to their libraries. "This timely publication is a first in that it covers the health care needs of such a diverse group of women about whom little information has appeared in the literature. The authors provide much-needed information to help health care providers understand more fully the health needs of these groups, including Native American, Hispanic/Latina, Asian/Pacific Islanders, African American, and Arab/Middle Eastern American women. The information provided has been well researched, and each chapter has an impressive list of current and relevant references. Essential reading for medical students and graduate nursing students preparing to serve as clinical nurse specialists or nurse practitioners. An excellent contribution." --Choice "Health Issues for Women of Color presents a range of approaches to health concerns facing not just blacks and Asians, but women of color around the world. From domestic violence to mental health and drug abuse, this provides some strong insights into the cultural influences of health upon women of color." --The Midwest Book Review "A much-needed, sensitive examination of the scope of health diseases faced by women of color and an invaluable aid to women seeking preventive interventions at an early stage of disease onset. The strengths of women of color are emphasized throughout; emerging health concerns, research needs, and key policy issues are identified; and the importance of accurate data collection from diverse subgroups is highlighted." --Cardiss Collins, (D-IL), House of RepresentativesCustomer Reviews:

Mating Intelligence: Sex, Relationships, and the Mind's Reproductive System
Manufacturer: Lawrence Erlbaum ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0805857494 |
Book Description
Human intelligence is sexually attractive, and strongly predicts the success of sexual relationships, but the behavioral sciences have usually ignored the interface between intelligence and mating. This is the first serious scholarly effort to explore that interface, by examining both universals and individual differences in human mating intelligence. Contributors include some of the most prominent evolutionary psychologists and promising new researchers in human intelligence, social psychology, intimate relationships, and sexuality.
David Buss’ Foreword and the opening chapter explore what ‘mating intelligence’ means, and why it is central to human cognition and sexuality. The book’s six sections then examine (1) our mating mechanisms—universal emotional and cognitive adaptations for mating intelligently—that guide mate search, mate choice, and courtship; (2) how mating intelligence strategically guides our choice of mating tactics and partners given different relationship goals, personality traits, forms of deception, and the existence of children; (3) the genetic and psychiatric causes of individual differences in mating intelligence; (4) how we use mental fitness indicators—forms of human intelligence such as creativity, humor, and emotional intelligence—to attract and retain sexual partners; (5) the ecological and social contexts of mating intelligence; (6) integrative models of mating intelligence that can guide future research.
Mating Intelligence is intended for researchers, advanced students, and courses in human sexuality, intimate relationships, intelligence research, behavior genetics, and evolutionary, personality, social, and clinical psychology.
