      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great for beginners.......2003-08-23

This book is very easy to understand. It is laid out a little differently than the Marieb, Martini and Tortora books. I find it easier to understand though. The extra tidbits in the book are really interesting as well. The book has answered things I have often wondered about but, never asked anyone. If you are new to A&P this book will really help you out without overwhelming you and confusing you. Thank you Dr Van de Graaff

4 out of 5 stars Great Anatomy Tool.......2002-09-05

I have to use this book for Human Anatomy and it is great the detail put into the book. If you buy it new from the publisher it even comes with a CD and a thinner, helpful spiral bound book that contains all of the diagrams.

3 out of 5 stars this book is so expensive!!!.......1999-08-26

This book is essential to anyone taking Anatomy. It is very detailed and provides a lot of pictures. It is sometimes too detailed, which makes it difficult for the average student to understand. I recommend using it along with the anatomy coloring book. My only complaint is the price, why is it so expensive?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Anatomy Text.......1998-12-10

This book is a wonderful text for an introductory college course in human anatomy. I attend Weber State University and had the luxury of being taught by Dr. Van De Graaff. He is a wonderful professor with vast knowledge. The greatness of the book and the strength of its author have inspired many individuals such as myself to aspire to new heights in their college careers. Thanks Dr. Van De Graaff.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-07-14

I bought this book shortly before my husband and I made the final decision to go ahead with IVF. We went through IVF at one of the Sher Institutes (in IL) and I found Dr. Sher's book to be very helpful in answering some of questions/worries and even after speaking with the nurses & doctors at the clinic, this book was a great quick reference tool for any questions that I had.

I believe that this book would be helpful for anyone considering and/or going through the IVF process, regardless of what clinic you are having the procedure through.

Although the book doesn't give personal accounts of the IVF process, it does provide very helpful and technical information. I found myself referring to this book more than any of the other IVF books that I purchased.

4 out of 5 stars excellent resource for couples wanting info on ivf.......2007-05-27

If you want a clear explanation of the process of ivf this is an excellent resource. It avoids personal stories and provides a comprehensive overview of the range of options for assisted reproduction.

      2 out of 5 stars Outdated information.......2005-07-13

I made the mistake of purchasing his older book called The A.R.T. of making babies updated edition. Do not buy unless your doing a research paper. This book was written in 1998 and the information is outdated. Make sure you purchase the 2005 edition. I wish amazon.com would have made this clearer. I did read it anyways and had the book been filled with updated information it could be informative. I found the "Couple's guide to In Vitro Fertilization a much better book. Having recently gone through the procedure it was right on the money and very easy to read and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Good source of information.......2005-06-14

My husband and I recently found out that IVF was probably our only hope at having a biological child. We live in an area where IVF is basically non-existent... as is the information that we've received. I wanted to find out everything I could about the IVF process, expenses, etc. This book was an excellent source of information from fertility testing, to the entire IVF process. It also went into depth on new procedures that can be used along with IVF. VERY inforamtive, and I would recommend to anyone craving knowledge about IVF.

5 out of 5 stars This is the NEW edition of The A.R.T. of Making Babies!.......2005-05-28

I noticed the review from KK "Current IVFer" below and wanted to to say that this is the NEWEST edition of In Vitro Fertilization: The A.R.T. of Making Babies by Dr Geoffrey Sher (Copyright 2005) . This book contains NEW information about IVF techniques and technology. KK "Current IVFer", if you received the older version of this book, when you thought that you had ordered this NEW edition, contact the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine, Patient Resource Center at www.haveababy.com , I'll bet they'll be happy to replace your copy.

        Book Description

The brain in the second trimester, the subject of Volume 3, is nearing anatomical maturity throughout the brainstem. In contrast, the neurogenesis and neuronal migration are still in progress in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. Consequently, the authors chose to focus on the migration, sojourning, and settling of the neuronal populations belonging to these immature structures. These observations can help researchers develop a better understanding of normal brain development at this formative stage. In this volume, the authors offer consideration of a new concept regarding human cortical development: the identification of the stratified transitional field (STF), which continues to play an important role in later stages. Until recently regarded as simply an intermediate and transitional layer of little significance, modern imaging techniques have shown that it is in the STF where cortical neural connections are first specified. Among other salient points, the development of this field may well bring to light those disruptions during development that lead to cerebral palsy.

        Book Description

Focusing on African American, Hispanic/Latina, Asian/Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and American Indian/Alaskan Native women, Health Issues for Women of Color presents a multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach to the major health concerns of today's women of color. The chapters address topics such as domestic violence, anxiety, drug abuse, mental health, sexism, and racism, as well as the unique problems of the growing population of women of color who are homeless. In this valuable resource, the contributors examine the strengths of women of color; identify emerging health concerns, research needs, and key policy issues; and highlight the importance of accurate data collection from diverse subgroups. The book demonstrates how much needs to be done to bring parity to health care for women of color and also provides insight into the importance of cultural sensitivity and competence in increasing access to health care. Students, health care professionals, researchers, and policymakers who desire to see equity in health care access and delivery will find Health Issues for Women of Color an important addition to their libraries. "This timely publication is a first in that it covers the health care needs of such a diverse group of women about whom little information has appeared in the literature. The authors provide much-needed information to help health care providers understand more fully the health needs of these groups, including Native American, Hispanic/Latina, Asian/Pacific Islanders, African American, and Arab/Middle Eastern American women. The information provided has been well researched, and each chapter has an impressive list of current and relevant references. Essential reading for medical students and graduate nursing students preparing to serve as clinical nurse specialists or nurse practitioners. An excellent contribution." --Choice "Health Issues for Women of Color presents a range of approaches to health concerns facing not just blacks and Asians, but women of color around the world. From domestic violence to mental health and drug abuse, this provides some strong insights into the cultural influences of health upon women of color." --The Midwest Book Review "A much-needed, sensitive examination of the scope of health diseases faced by women of color and an invaluable aid to women seeking preventive interventions at an early stage of disease onset. The strengths of women of color are emphasized throughout; emerging health concerns, research needs, and key policy issues are identified; and the importance of accurate data collection from diverse subgroups is highlighted." --Cardiss Collins, (D-IL), House of Representatives

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars a pretty good resource book.......2006-11-27

This would be a great compendium or resource book for those writing papers on women of color. At times a bit dull to read, many chapters amass all research available to say what diseases affect women of color and to what extent. Though the book never says racism is more of an issue for women of color than sexism, the contributors usually compare the health status of women of color to white women, rather than to men of color. This book does a great job in acknowledging diversity. One might ask, for example, "How can you talk about Asian women's health when that group encompasses so many subpopulations?" The book would answer by saying, "This is what research says about East Asians; this is what is known of South Asians; this is what we have on Pacific Islander women.", etc.

I liked the chapter "Health Care on the Inside" the best. Unfortunately, because of its colloquial title, many may not know it talks about women of color in prison and their health needs. I thought this book was thorough, but some chapters need not be there. One of the last chapters was on homeless children. Yes, women are the primary caretakers of children, but that chapter would have been better suited for a book solely on children. Several other chapters are tangential to the main subject. Maybe this is an example of "Publish or perish!" Still, some authors really should have taken their work elsewhere.

To be honest, this book may be dated. It was written in the mid-1990s. Medicare has changed. Former President Clinton gutted welfare in many ways. Prisons are no longer profitable in the way they had been for small towns. This book has a chapter on Arab American women. It would now need to speak of the added discrimination they face after the 9-11 attacks. Still, I bet this book may have been a catalyst for researchers to add to the existing health studies on women of color.

Straight talk for men … and the women who love them

When it comes to the health of their sex organs, even educated, intelligent men become embarrassed and irrational, preferring to ignore a problem in the hope that it will go away and seeking medical advice only as a last resort. Private Parts boldly cuts through the superstition, popular misconception, and general ignorance to provide a reassuring, no-nonsense guide to this area of vital concern to all men.

Dr. Yosh Taguchi, a prominent Montreal urologist, sets out in a straightforward, easy-to-understand manner how the male sex organs function, what is considered normal, and what should be checked out by a doctor. Prostate trouble, erectile dysfunction, infertility, cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, vasectomies, and artificial insemination are some of the common concerns and health issues discussed. Taguchi also dispels myths about sexual performance and male menopause.

In this new, expanded edition Dr. Taguchi also discusses the latest developments in the treatment of the prostate and updates information on drugs for erectile dysfunction.

Human intelligence is sexually attractive, and strongly predicts the success of sexual relationships, but the behavioral sciences have usually ignored the interface between intelligence and mating. This is the first serious scholarly effort to explore that interface, by examining both universals and individual differences in human mating intelligence. Contributors include some of the most prominent evolutionary psychologists and promising new researchers in human intelligence, social psychology, intimate relationships, and sexuality.

David Buss’ Foreword and the opening chapter explore what ‘mating intelligence’ means, and why it is central to human cognition and sexuality. The book’s six sections then examine (1) our mating mechanisms—universal emotional and cognitive adaptations for mating intelligently—that guide mate search, mate choice, and courtship; (2) how mating intelligence strategically guides our choice of mating tactics and partners given different relationship goals, personality traits, forms of deception, and the existence of children; (3) the genetic and psychiatric causes of individual differences in mating intelligence; (4) how we use mental fitness indicators—forms of human intelligence such as creativity, humor, and emotional intelligence—to attract and retain sexual partners; (5) the ecological and social contexts of mating intelligence; (6) integrative models of mating intelligence that can guide future research.

Mating Intelligence is intended for researchers, advanced students, and courses in human sexuality, intimate relationships, intelligence research, behavior genetics, and evolutionary, personality, social, and clinical psychology.
