Customer Reviews:
great.......2007-01-04
I found the the book in a very good shape. I'm very much satisfied.
Fascinating material.......2005-06-18
I used this book for one of my favorite classes in college on biotechnology. It will show you the cool side of science and all of the neat things you can do with biology and DNA. The level is low enough to where you only need a minimal background to understand it, basic biology classes and preferably genetics. After completing the book you should be excited about the future of biotech, and you will have some understanding about how it works.
Good introductory material for the technical.......2001-05-11
To those who are interested in the functional aspects of the DNA this is the right introductory stuff. It covers areas including basic molecular biology to commercial methods for manipulating the genes. Pretty useful for someone who's more interested in the technology than the biology!
Good overview but lacks technical rigor.......2000-04-07
I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department. Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in a somewhat shallow and repetitive way. I have also seen clearer and more concise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, and there is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area. This is not necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora of information found in the biotechnology field. If someone wants a broad review of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you want to focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else.

Book Description
Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, one of the most comprehensive and authoritative works in the field of prokaryotic systematics is undergoing an extensive revision that will ultimately culminate in a five volume Second Edition. Arrangement of the content of the Second Edition follows the now familiar and well regarded phylogeny of the 16S rRNA gene, yet retains much of the layout of the First Edition. Volume 1, encompassing the Archaea, Deeply Branching and Phototrophic Bacteria was published in 2001. We are pleased to announce that work on Volume 2, The Proteobacteria, has been completed. This culminates a four year effort by Bergey's Manual Trust and more than 150 internationally recognized authorities to provide a comprehensive view of the Proteobacteria, the largest prokaryotic phylum.
At present, there are roughly 6250 named species of Bacteria, and the Proteobacteria represent the single largest phylum. Encompassing 72 families and including descriptions of 425 genera and over 1875 named species, the volume will be subdivided into three sub-volumes: The Gammaproteobacteria (Part A), The Alphaproteobacteria (Part B) and the Beta-, Delta-, and Epsilonproteobacteria. Also included are new introductory chapters specific to the phylum. The Proteobacteria also represent the most diverse group of bacteria, metabolically and ecologically. Moreover, the Proteobacteria contain many of the clinically relevant species of Bacteria and are of significance in human, animal and plant health. As a result, this volume caters to the broadest audience and the set is an essential reference for the microbiologist. Most importantly, medically important species appear in all three sub-volumes.

Manual of Environmental Microbiology
ASIN: 0124975704 |
Book Description
The field of environmental microbiology encompasses aspects of several areas of study including microbial ecology, molecular genetics, and environmental science.
Environmental Microbiology is the first book to offer a comprehensive discussion of this field as a discipline, which the authors define as the study of microbial fate and activity in air, water, and soil, and the resulting impact on human health and welfare. While the roots of environmental microbiology can be traced to sanitary engineering (water and wastewater treatment), the field has grown to include other practical issues such as bioremediation, the control of known and emerging waterborne pathogens, microbial risk assessment, and environmental biotechnology. Five general areas are emphasized in this text: (i) Foundation chapters, (ii) microbial environments, (iii) detection of microbial activity, (iv) the impact of microbial activity on the environment in terms of nutrient cycling and pollutant fate, and (v) detection and control of pathogens in the environment. Designed for courses at senior undergraduate and graduate levels, Environmental Microbiology will also serve as an essential reference for environmental microbiologists, microbial ecologists, and environmental engineers, as well as those interested in epidemiology, water and wastewater treatment, and biotechnology.
Key Features
Among the Highlights of this state-of-the-art Textbook:
* Includes foundation chapters for background in biological and earth sciences
* Covers emerging areas such as transport of microbes and DNA, microbial risk assessment, and use of molecular detection in environmental applications
* References key or landmark works without interrupting the flow of text
* Describes the newest analytical and molecular methodologies
* Contains many detailed, full-color graphics to make the text visually stimulating
* Presents numerous "case studies" to emphasize relevance to real-life situations

Customer Reviews:
Just mediocre........2002-06-19
I was anxious to receive this book, since it was praised as one of the best books available in the area of environmental microbiology. After reading through the pages, I just couldn't agree with this statement.
Here are some of the good points of this book: It's written in a fairly easy to understand language and provides a lot of pictures and graphs to illustrate important concepts.
Here are the bad points: It summarizes a lot and leaves out a lot of details and information. Whoever buys this book better know something about biochemistry and microbiology already. The graphs and pictures are sometimes ridiculous and of poor quality, almost like they were done at a home PC.
The book would be best for somebody who is a hobby environmentalist that wants to expand his/her knowledge, or undergraduate students of biology who want to explore the environmental aspect of microbiology out of curiosity. If you are serious about environmental microbiology and really want to get into it on a more professional level, I suggest the "Manual of Environmental Microbiology" 2nd edition, published by the American Society for Microbiology. It's a little more expensive, but worth every penny!
Environmental Microbiology.......2001-05-30
This is one of the most detailed, interesting, well illustrated books in microbiology that I have ever read. It gets right to the information that someone working in the environmental field needs, all in one place. No more digging around through multiple sources and hunting the internet for the latest information - its all here.

Book Description
Would you like to bring guest lectures like researchers, physicians, or fellow instructors into you microbiology course? With this third edition of INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY you get the perspective of all of those three professionals. John Ingraham, a professor of microbiology at University of California at Davis, and Catherine Ingraham, his daughter and a practicing physician, utilize their experience within a case history approach complemented by a great technology package. Each chapter in INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY now consistently begins with a case history, which John Ingraham has found very motivational to students who are new to the study of basic science. Because Catherine Ingraham studied to become a physician by interviewing patients, determining causes and implementing solutions, she knows mastry comes from high interest human stories rather than clinical presentations. Many of the case histories found in this book are taken from Catherine's experience as a physician. This combination of experiences and talent brings a case-based quality to every lecture and homework session. This unique author team also provides up-to-the-minute currency. Coverage of new microbial "events" such as biological warfare, studied by John and its effects prepared for in Catherine's office, keeps students interested. The authors also highlight reemerging diseases, such as tuberculoses and smallpox. As with previous editions, this book takes a "body systems" organization. Students are exposed to the unknown, the world of the microbes, through the known, and the different parts of their own bodies. And, because art is so important, there is again a multimedia manager with this title, but with more exciting capabilities than ever before. Instructors receive powerful PowerPoint slides for all the illustrations, tables and figures from the text, plus several animations are at your fingertips.
Customer Reviews:
great intro book.......2007-03-28
I got this book with a Medical Micro book for a class. While the approach of this book is occasionally juvenal (I don't need a little story about a boy getting a puncture wound to explain the immune response), it has been a good fall-back reference as the material is organized differently from the other text.
A teacher's perspective.......2006-09-06
The textbook writing is simple but meanders enough to lose focus. The busy student could benefit from the many tables and figures, but somehow the link between text and graphics is lost in the voluminous chapters. The summaries are point like renditions of the text and do not highlight important material. Likewise the comprehensive self-test questions are not graded according to importance and carry no link back to the text.
Overall, a comprehensive textbook, but lacking the focus and layout for easy adoption and study.
A good introduction.......2005-10-07
This text gives pleanty of pictures and the cases studies help reinforce what the reader is learning in lecture and lab. I did not have to use the CD-Rom, but the lab book that goes with this text was a lot of fun.
I did not even purchase this book from this person and it was sent to me by mistake I ordered another book from wich was correct.......2005-10-04
This book was sent to me in a mistake. I never ordered this book from this individual. Honestly I do not know how this mix up was caused. I am not responsible from other peoples mistakes or the mistake of your services. I do not denie buying a book from him because I did but not the Micro-Biology book.
I would like to speak to some one verbally over the phone so that this can be risolved and at no expense to me. Because I did not order this book. I would like to be reemberst for the money spent to send this product back.

I had to buy this book for a Graduate level course that I took. We covered all of the material in the book in about 4 weeks. I didn't know anything about the class beforehand, but the book did help a lot. It was a little dull, but the content was good albeit a little outdated.
Keep this book by the microscope.......2004-01-26
This is the book that tells you how to actually do effective microscopy. Keep a copy by the microscope.
Best Introductory-Level Textbook.......2002-08-08
Dr. Murphy constructs a solid foundation on the basic concepts of geometrical optics, light, and color, and then provides excellent introductory reviews of important topics in light microscopy. The book is very well written and complex phenomena are clearly explained without the unnecessary math that often confuses students. Illustrations are numerous and help support the text very nicely, as do the suggested laboratory exercises that accompany each chapter. Discussions of digital cameras and image processing are timely and provide the essential concepts necessary to tackle more advanced treatises. In the opinion of the Molecular Expressions microscopy website team, this book is by far the best entry-level textbook in the field.
Well Written and Useful.......2001-11-01
"This well written text provides a clear, uncluttered overview of the principles and practice of modern light microscopy. It contains many helpful teaching exercises and diagrams. It should prove useful in a wide range of courses from the undergraduate to the postgraduate level."

Book Description
Now in its thoroughly revised, updated Fifth Edition, this volume is a comprehensive, practical reference on contemporary methods of disinfection, sterilization, and preservation and their medical, surgical, and public health applications. More than a third of this edition's chapters cover subjects never addressed in previous editions. New topics covered include recently identified pathogens, microbial biofilms, use of antibiotics as antiseptics, synergism between chemical microbicides, pulsed-light sterilization of pharmaceuticals, and new methods for medical waste management. Close attention is given to infection control problems posed by endoscopes, implants, prostheses, and organ transplantation and to prevention of opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. A Brandon-Hill recommended title.
