Book Description

"The one thing, on which we can all agree, is that God is with the vulnerable and poor. God is in the slums and in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house. God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us if we are with them. 6,500 Africans are still dying every day of a preventable, treatable disease, for lack of drugs we can buy at any drug store. This is not about charity, this is about Justice and Equality." --Bono

This small book, based upon the speech given by Bono at the 2006 NPB, delivers an inspiring and powerful message. Here, in Bono's own words, is a reflection on his own faith and a challenge to people of all faiths to reach across boundaries and come together on behalf of what the Scriptures call "the least of these."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book, but a Shallow Gospel.......2007-09-30

The content of this short book is actually a speech Bono gave at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. in 2006. Bono makes his case for justice for Africa, outlining his own personal story, the religious motivation for giving, and what he ultimately desires out of the politicians he is addressing - a commitment to devote 1% of the fiscal budget to Africa.

The pictures in this book are beautifully provocative and captivating. The words can be so, too. But don't be too quick to embrace Bono's point of view. This is social gospel to the core. Bono combines tidbits from Islam, Judaism, Christianity... whatever fits the bill, really... to advocate for the poorest of the poor. And while so much of his message about poverty is true (e.g. "There's a gigantic chasm between the scale of the emergency and the scale of the response") the basis and the context are all wrong.

I'm still figuring out what it means to live as a privileged young American in a world that is full of suffering and poverty and need. And I can only admire Bono for his Africa advocacy. I am so thankful that light is being shed on those who need our help. And I am confident that God can and does work through all of this. I don't even have a problem with Christians aligning themselves with the ONE campaign, because it stands for what we should be standing for - justice and generosity and love.

But that ends with doctrine and theology. I think Bono is preaching a shallow gospel, a cheap gospel, based on the pluralistic gods of this age. He is not preaching Christ crucified. He is preaching God in the slums. And while that is a valuable message, it doesn't compare to the most explosive message of all - Christ Jesus came to this earth to save sinners, of whom I am the very worst.

4 out of 5 stars Moving and Inspiring.......2007-09-28

Bono is not only one of the biggest names in Rock and Roll history, but one of the world's best known philanthropists. His work in Africa is truly inspiring. This beautifully designed book incorporates the provocative speech he made at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast in Washington with some of the powerful and moving pictures that Bono himself took on one of his many trips to Africa. This is a great speech with a great message, and presented as it is in this way, makes it a great book and excellent conversation starter.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Superstar Bono Emerges As Major Theological Force.......2007-09-08

This book documents the emergence of Rock superstar Bono as a major theological force in the interest of ending extreme poverty in Africa, where six thousand die of AIDS each day. He is becoming the Martin Luther King of Africa aid relief.

"There is a continent--Africa--being consumed by flames. I truly believe that when the history books are written, our age will be remembered for three things: the war on terror, the digital revolution, and what we did--or did not do--to put the fire out in Africa. History, like God, is watching what we do." This quote is accompanied by the words FREEDOM and EQUALITY repeated numerous times in the form of a map of Africa.

Bono updates Isaiah 58:9-11 to report on the presence of God in today's world. "God is in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house. God is in the silence of a mother who has infected her child with a virus that will end both of their lives. God is in the cries heard under the rubble of war. God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us if we are with them."

Bono founded the advocacy group DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) in 2002. It is a member of ONE, the Camapaign to Make Poverty History. In 2006 he launched Product (RED) to engage businesses in the fight against AIDS. He lives in Dublin, Ireland with his wife and four children.

Bono wants the United States to give an additional one percent of its federal budget annually to end world poverty. Beside a picture of a barely clothed African child, Bono says "Where you live should no longer determine whether you live." He adds, "We hear that call in the One Campaign, a growing movement of more than two million Americans left and right together, united in the belief that where you live should no longer determine whether you live."

Bono eloquently summarizes more of his agenda, "Preventing the poorest of the poor from selling their products while we sing the virtues of the free market--that's a justice issue. Holding children ransom for the debts of their grandparents--that's a justice issue. Withholding the life-saving medicines out of defeerence to the Office of Patents--that's a justice issue. And while the law is what wwe say it is, God is not silent on the subject."

Bono is of both Protestant and Catholic ancestry in a land deeply divided by literal warfare over the differences between these religions. "Religion often gets in the way of God, " Bono says. "I was cynical. Not about God, but about God's politics."

Bono was called to action by concept of the millennial year of 2000 being a Jubilee year, "an opportunity to cancel the chronic debts of the world's poorest people. They (the advocates of a Jubilee year) had the audacity to renew the Lord's call--and they were joined by Pope John Paul II, who, from an Irish half-Catholic's point of view, may have had a more direct line to the Almighty."

This is a book to stir people to action by man who, the publisher notes, "has brought about tremendous change--billions of dollars in debt relief have been forgiven and thousands of lives have been saved. But more than that, he has opened our eyes to the dignity, beauty, and strength of this continent. His eloquence when speaking about Africa at the National Prayer Breakfast inspired this book. My hope is that it will inspire you as well."

This is a book that does stir people to action, that ought to be read by people who want ideas on how to use their time and money to solve major problems facing the world. Bill Clinton, active in raising money and public consciousness for African relief in the years since he left the White House, describes this book as "Inspirational words from a man of faith and action. Bono's message is one of unparalled hope and challenge. He goes where others don't and makes us want to follow."

A rock star as an international moral leader? It is an unusual concept to be sure. But Bono says, "When churches started deomonstrating on debt, governments listened--and acted. When churches started organizing, petitioning, and even that most unholy of acts today, God forbid, lobbying on AIDS and global health, governments listened and acted.

"I'm here (at the National Prayer breakfast) today in all humility to say: you changed minds; you changed policy; you changed the world.

"Look, whatever thoughts you have about God, who God is or if God exists--most will agree that if there is a God, God has a special place for the poor. In fact, the poor are where God lives."

Bono notes the intense interest in poverty in the scriptures. "It's not a coincidence that in the Scriptures, poverty is mentioned more than 2,100 times. That's a lot of airtime, 2,100 mentions." He praises our country for doubling aid to Africa, tripling funding for global health, putting 900,000 people onto life-saving anti-viral drugs and providing 11,000,000 bed nets to protect children from malaria.

"Outstanding human achievements. Counterintuitive. Historic. Be very, very proud. But here's the bad news. There is much more to do. There's a gigantic chasm between the scale of the emergency and the scale of the respons. And finally, it's not a questions about charity after all, is it? It's about justice."

Bono works to incite his audience to action. "But justice is a higher standard. Africa makes a fool of our idea of justice. It makes a farce of our idea of equality. It mocks our pieties; it doubts our concern; it questions our commitment."

This is book that is moving, provocative, and insightful. The greater its audience, the greater will be the world's response to one of the great international challenges of our time.

5 out of 5 stars A sense of longing.......2007-08-28

I saw this book this spring and knew I had to buy it. One, because Bono is someone I admire greatly. Of course I am bummed that the speech in this book was delivered at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast, and seeing as how I have strong connections with the organizers I'm sad I didn't actually get to be there. Two, because I had saved this speech on my computer but never took the time to read the whole thing. And three because while I read it I had an immediate longing to go to Africa. To go there and knowingly have my heart broken, but knowing God's heart is breaking when a baby is born into poverty. To experience the pain and heartache, but also the joy that is thriving in these people.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring........2007-07-16

I found this book to be interesting, inspiring, heartbreaking and wonderful. As usual Bono is well spoken, deliberate, engaging and to the point.

Book Description

There Is No Me Without You is the story of Haregewoin Tefarra, a middle-aged Ethiopian woman of modest means whose home has become a refuge for hundreds of children orphaned by AIDS. It is a story as much about the power of the bond between children and parents as about the epidemic that every year leaves millions of children, mostly healthy themselves, without family. Originally a middle-class woman with a happy family life, Haregewoin fell into a deep depression after the death of her recently married daughter. But then a priest brought her two children, AIDS orphans, with nowhere to go. Unexpectedly, the children thrived, and Haregewoin found herself drawn back into daily life. As word got out, an endless stream of children began to arrive at her door, delivered by dying parents and other relatives who begged for her help, and, pushing against the limits of her home and bank account, she took more and more in. Today, Haregewoin runs a school, a daycare system, and a shelter for sick mothers. Without medication for her charges—some HIV-positive, some uninfected, and some infants trying to fight off the virus, but almost all of whom come to her terrified and malnourished—she forges on, caring for as many as she can handle. Increasingly, she also places them for adoption with families like that of journalist Melissa Fay Greene, who has two children adopted from Ethiopia. In Haregewoin Tefarra’s story, Greene gives us an astonishing portrait of a woman fighting a continent-wide epidemic.

5 out of 5 stars Opening our eyes to global needs.......2007-06-30

Melissa Fay Greene has the gift of story telling. The book beckons the reader to think beyond themselves and consider what contribution they may make to the cause of the orphan/Aids in Africa. Thank you Ms. Greene for inviting us on the journey...for educating us on real life on the other side of the globe...for jolting us out of our comfort and compelling us to action. One would need to have a heart of stone not to be moved by this powerful story!

5 out of 5 stars awesome, informative book.......2007-06-09

I am so thrilled that I spent time reading this book. I loved it. This is a well written, informative book. I enjoyed the writing style as it moved through factual historical perspectives to the story of one women making a difference. Take time to read...you will be happy you did!

5 out of 5 stars Moving, informative, gripping picture of humanity in Ethiopia.......2007-05-29

This is the best book I have read in some time. It is meticulously researched, insightful, and explains difficult technical issues clearly. It is gripping in its description of the plight of AIDS orphans and the incredible poverty of Ethiopia. But it is particularly special in the even-handed description of Haregewoin, not as a saint, thought she has given of herself like one, but as a flawed human (as we are all flawed) who has accomplished incredible good at a time when doing so put herself in great jeopardy in her society. This book is a great accomplishment by an accomplished author. I hope she receives the National Book Award for this one!

5 out of 5 stars inspiring book.......2007-05-27

I loved this book! If you want to learn about Ethiopia, the AIDS crisis there, or if you want to be inspired by a true hero, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for the globally minded!.......2007-05-25

Sometimes it is difficult to break out our own local environment to learn more about important events are taking place around the world. Melissa Fay Greene's book, "There Is No Me Without You," allows even the most superficial of us to learn about the AIDS crisis in Africa and begin taking steps to help support a solution to the social problems plaguing that continent. I was familiar with the AIDS crisis in Africa but was horrified to learn about the lack of available pharmaceuticals for treatment of HIV-positive adults and children. It was truly an eye-opener to hear about the gross (for lack of a better word) profits made by drug companies producing these medicines and then the reluctance of those same companies to allow these treatments to be shared with the sick and dying.I was appalled.

I would highly recommend this book. After finishing "There Is No Me Without You," I researched the websites in the back of the book and found it was possible to directly donate to AHOPE. Interested individuals can even sponsor an orphan for as little as $30 a month. I easily spend more than that on books every month.

I was inspired, enlightened, motivated and educated by this book. Thank you Melissa for writing about these wonderful people and sharing their stories with us.

Could have better explanations. It is a bit hard to understand.

4 out of 5 stars The cure for AIDS wasn't suppose to be this difficult........2006-10-27

Hulda Regehr Clark tells the microbiological detective story in which some of the best brains in science have been pitted against the most extraordinary bug the world has ever seen. In 1984 it was discovered that HIV was the cause of AIDS. Straight away, there were confident predictions that there would be a vaccine ready for testing in just two years. Back then, just 1,292 deaths from AIDS had been reported. Now the figure is 25 million dead. By 2010 it is predicted there will be 85 million infections and 70 million deaths. And after 20 years there is still no sign of a vaccine. Despite work of dazzling complexity, the ambition of so many brilliant scientists has been constantly thwarted. Just as a vaccine seems to be working, the AIDS virus alters itself, and ten to fifteen years of work, and millions of dollars, go down the drain. These bitter disappointments are only compounded by the desperate human urgency of the work. The virus is impervious to almost everything you throw at it, says Hulda Clark. The Cure For HIV / AIDS, is a story where the clock doesn't stop ticking.

1 out of 5 stars This woman is pure evil,.......2006-07-15

and a sickening parasite 'The cure for a conscience' is what her next book should be titled. This a disgusting way to mislead, take advantage of and make money off those in dire need dealing with this deadly illness. I hold New Century Press and Amazon.com responsible for promoting this trash.

5 out of 5 stars Outside or Inside.......2005-12-01

It seems critics usually attack because this is "outside" the accepted medical model. Have any of the critics ever read Dr. Stargell's report in the July 1998 AMA, where it is presented that the accepted medical model kills nearly as many people each year as heart disease? a report by a doctor based on research by doctors. So pehaps there is much offered outside the accepted medical model.

To me, the real question is: "Does it work?" If so, what is the cost, what are the side effects and where do I begin. Since there are no answers in the medical community, and the medical community seems to offer little hope, perhaps it is time to seek elsewhere. If it works, who cares what the doctor thinks? Not I. In fact, my experience is that going to the doctor for most ailments we face may well be the last thing I want to do. Mecicine and health are diverging lines. Medicine is not about health, it is about shifting symptoms with synthetic substances that have side effects. I choose health. If Hulda Clark and others like her with courage provide information that assists in building health, then I for one do not care one iota if she has the blessing of the medical community. It is time they began to change.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom of making choices.......2005-11-13

I truly admire Hulda Clark for her great contribution to the human race, with her such books which I've read and applied some of her ideas. It may seem radical yet what's the defintion of "normal" anyway? While some things may not work for an individual, it may work for others. As our bodies as well as our belief systems (which seems to be more important thing than anything) respond to different things, at different stages of Life. There's no ONE way for everyone. It may take some experiment and time to get the kind of results some may seek for, in however way we may find out there, either modern or traditional or such. What Hulda has done is that she offers an alternative way, to give some folks, desperate or not, chance to give it a try after their certain treatments fail or some treatment causing severe side effects turning their lives as unbearable to live. Some may disagree with the books yet there are couple of pratical logical things to do, to safeguard their health, like taking well known toxic stuff out of kitchen or better the entire house, what not to consume or inhale to avoid self-poisoning, healthier products to use for babies, so forth. Rather than condemning the whole book. To those who seem wanting to burn this book of Hulda's... I'm quite glad that we're in democratic society, with such kind of freedom we enjoy i.e. freedom of press. We do have rights to make intimate personal choices for ourselves and our health needs... WITHOUT much interference from those who disagree. Think and feel for yourself, without fear. They do have right to those opinions, that is, without taking or harming this such freedom we have. "Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it" - Chinese proverb (US and China, different political systems....hmmm) Read on and see what may help!

Book Description

No one said being a single mother was easy, but, after some difficult years, Sabrena Collins seemed to finally have it together. She had a good-paying job, two beautiful daughters who were growing up with love and security, and a wonderful friend who was more like the sister she never had. She even had a man in her life who was everything her ex-husband was not: kind, generous and caring.

Everything seemed perfect—except for one thing. Steve said he loved her, but he was unreliable. There was more than one night when Sabrena would lie in bed, waiting for the phone to ring…alone and crying silent tears.

But when Sabrena was in his arms and he looked at her with his melt-on-the-spot chocolate brown eyes, all the problems, the sleepless nights, the cold dinners, all of that was forgotten.

And then, suddenly, Sabrena’s world was turned upside down by a simple visit that led her on a frightening and unfamiliar path, that led her to a truth passion and words of love could not erase, a truth that would change her life forever. A truth that would test her faith, her courage, her strength, and above all else, her love…

3 out of 5 stars Book Club's Will Love This One.......2007-04-08

Read this book with interest from cover to cover. Found the characters's believeable and the story interesting. It was a Book Club selection, so I was not excited about reading it but found it remarkably easy to read and I felt I knew the characters. The book club discussion was not only entertaining but educational. Would definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars For Men as Well as Women-- This is a Novel that MUST be Shared.......2007-04-05

My wife's bookclub was reading this book and after seeing the way that my wife devoured the book and could not stop talking about it, my daughter and I read it. We actually sat in on her bookclub discussion and I am a "macho" guy.

This book is life changing and really makes an impact. I appreciate the character development and the movement of the story. As a father and husband, I appreciate the way that women are portrayed as well as a mother's love. However, I appreciate that the author did not take the easy way out and paint the men as utter demons with no redeeming characteristics. The characters had depth and were alive as you read the pages. Finally, as a father of 2 boys and a daughter-- I have made this mandatory reading for Spring break for my family. We are going to have a family discussion as the issues raised merit time, energy and focus. Yes, my sons who are 15 and 12 will read this book and one has already started. Although the title takes men back and we don't want to neccessarily read this on the Metro.... it is one that we should all read.

I am suggesting that my church read this as well as I was drawn to how the author painted the picture of how society deals with HIV/AIDS. I can't say enough about this novel which was entertaining, kept my attention, great characters that I could relate to, humanistic, funny and REAL. This novel deserves even more exposure and I am committed to putting this in the hands of the people that I love.

Thank you to the author for writing a masterpiece--it is pure genius how she brings the health message in with fiction. I can't wait for her next novel and I don't regularly read books.

Book Description

We know that to err is human, but the HIV/AIDS hypothesis is one hell of a mistake. I say this rather strongly as a warning. Duesberg has been saying it for a long time. Read this book. --Kary B. Mullis, Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1993

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Duesberg is right about both AIDS and the politics of science .......2007-07-24

Contrary to popular belief, Peter Duesberg is not a quack. In fact, he is a widely acknowledged expert on retroviruses such as HIV. His credentials are impecable: he is a professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and a member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. Nevertheless, Dusberg is regarded by the uninformed as a quack because he has dared to scientifically investigate whether the retrovirus HIV actually causes the complex of diseases known as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) -- which has widely been asserted without proof -- and has had the courage to report that research shows the answer is that HIV is not the cause of AIDS.

In this excellent book Prof. Duesberg discusses in detail, but in a highly readable manner, both the retrovirus HIV and the syndome AIDS and shows that they are not the same things. In fact, AIDS is not itself a single disease but, rather, is a complex of more than 20 separate diseases. The one commonality of the diseases in the AIDS syndrome is not HIV infection but the fact that they rarely infect people with healthy immune systems. In general, people who acquire any of the AIDS diseases have deficient immune systems. In poor countries, especially in Africa where the incidence of AIDS is high, immune deficiency is mainly due to severe malnutrition. In the developed world, including the U.S., immune deficiency is often caused by deleterious lifestyle behavior, including drug use. A person whose immune system is severely weakened is then vulnerable to the diseases in the AIDS complex. Immune-deficient people often also catch HIV which is why HIV and AIDS often -- but definitely not always -- are found together. However, HIV can also occur in people who do not suffer from AIDS and never will. A positive test for HIV antibodies merely means that at some time a person has been infected with HIV, not that they are infected with HIV now or that they have or ever will have AIDS.

Another point which Prof. Duesberg covers in this book is that modern science has become highly politicized, and that disagreement with current scientific dogma is strongly discouraged and often punished by inability to publish in recognized scientific journals. This is one reason why Duesberg has difficulty presenting his case to the public. As a scientist with 44 years experience at a major research institution, I regret to confirm that science has indeed become politicized and dogmatic. Please read this book if you want to know the truth about AIDS and modern medical politics.

5 out of 5 stars So why aren't we all dead yet?.......2007-04-30

I read Dr. Duesberg's fine book the year it came out. It is complex in places so it took me some time and I had to reread certain parts to fully understand what was being said. It was well worth the time and energy to understand rather than take 'the authorities' word for it.

I knew that if he was wrong within ten years there would be such a large number of deaths due to AIDS that it would be impossible to refute the fact that it truly was an 'epidemic' and that Dr. Duesberg was totally wrong.

Well, where's the epidemic?

Thank you, Dr. Duesberg for your honesty and courage in the face of continuing herd mentality, sheep like belief in the 'authorities' and thank you most of all for putting your own career and reputation on the line for your integrity. It will be at least 50 years more before you are seen as the voice of reason and honesty that you are. Dr. Sammelweis faced the same idiocy from his peers as you face from yours. Of course there is not as much money to be make on washing hands or not washing hands as there is on the trillion dollar research scam of AIDS.

Thank you, Dr. Duesberg from all of us intelligent enough to follow your writing and honest enough to flip off the media and the government authoritiies to whom money and power come before honesty and caring about people's lives and health.

The truth will out. But not today I'm afraid.

2007 Update: will any and all reviewers that disagree with Dr. Duesberg's book please cite contradictory EVIDENCE and not simply opine that such evidence exists! An epidemic is just that. And there simply is no epidemic. Period! This was the media hype that created all this fear of a harmless "passenger virus" of which we all have many. The only epidemic is the epidemic of bleeting sheep that continue to tell us how horrible HIV is and how we simply must start on chemotherapy as soon as it is diagnosed. Baaaahhh!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, compelling, thorough and shocking reading.......2007-03-28

This book is an essential read for anyone who wants to know the truth about AIDS, Human Papiloma virus and other misrepresentations of the truth. I found this book hard to put down although shocking. The author leaves no doubt about his assertions with thorough explanations and a complete list of references. I am greatful for having read this book and I will be writing to my health minister for an explanation and to voice my protest. Thankyou Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute common sense, intelligent and revealing.......2007-03-21

If you have been told that you have AIDS, then it is only natural you will want to get yourself informed about the disease. Unfortunatley, if you have not read this book, you may have been given a dangerously incomplete and one-sided view.

Duesberg dissects the official Scientific theory behind this virus with surgical precision. His controversial thories, shared by others including Nobel Laureates, that AIDS is caused by a combination of toxic drugs and known diseaeses; and not by a dormant HIV virus, should be a wake up call that there is something seriously wrong with the current official picture. Clear and concise, the examples cited are extremely accessible to the Scientifically minded and layman alike, while retaining credibility and objectivity. This work should form one side of the contemporary debate on the AIDS virus; if it is not, and I doubt it is, then it only adds further credibility to the books findings.

If you care about human life more than the accumulation of wealth, and accepted scientific dogma - READ THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars most interesting book i have read in my life.......2007-03-16

this book took my understanding of scientifical research, industry and politics to a higher level.
i am a researcher myself (though not in the medical field). the vicious mechanims taking place in peer review and research funding as described by the author are not only plausible but likely.
most important, however, i could not find any logical mistakes made by the author in his scientifical reasoning.
i consider Duesberg a modern Galileo

Book Description

HIV ravaged the African continent faster and earlier than any other in the world, spreading primarily through unprotected heterosexual sex. Kaolack, Senegal is a town where travelers and prostitutes converge, and HIV transmission rates have soared, especially among the prostitutes. Going beyond empirical analysis of risk/behavior data, Women at the Crossroads tells the stories of these women in their own words.
The women portrayed keep their profession a secret from their families and friends, but abide by Senegalese law which states that prostitution is legal for those who register with the police and undergo bi-monthly health examinations. By observing one clinic's successful AIDS education campaign, anthropologist Michelle Renaud demonstrates that information presented in a culturally appropriate manner can, in fact, achieve the difficult goal of behavior change. Although these women claim to be trapped by the social and political forces that have led them to enter prostitution, Renaud

Book Description

Treating HIV with Nutrition

Nutrition and HIV addresses the issues of nutrition and HIV from the perspective of the patient as well as the physician. Everyone who is interested in the problems of--and solutions to--nutritional therapy in HIV owes it to themselves to read this book.
--Paul A. Volberding, M.D., director, Center for AIDS Research, San Francisco

This reference book offers a sound nutritional model for sustaining and improving quality of life for HIV positive men and women. It outlines an easy-to-follow program for the prevention and treatment of weight loss--a common problem that if left untreated could lead to serious health decline or even death.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a must have book!.......1999-07-20

This book helps affected/infected individual understand the nutritional needs of the body and also goes on to describe many other aspects of HIV. This book is definitely a must have for HIV+ individuals and caregivers/supporters.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those with HIV & for their support system........1999-03-12

Dr.Romeyn has addressed one of the most serious problems facing people with HIV, the devastating bodily wasting that occurs in those struggling with the effects of this disease. Her work is a comprehensive approach to nutritional treatment. She is articulate and yet not patronizing. Her concern and compassion for those who suffer from this dissease is quite apparent. I believe those who see her in her private practice are most fortunate. I am grateful for her work, and have given copies of this book to several men and women both in the parish and in the community at large. There is a great need in the larger community for this quality of information. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but..........1999-01-09

This is an informative book. However, it did not meet my expectations. It even gets boring sometimes. However, it is a good book to have if you are interested in learning more about vitamins and minerals, and their effect with HIV/AIDS.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for physician, patient, or friend.......1998-11-07

I found this book to be an excellent resource to provide both an overview of the HIV/AIDS disease process, and to help formulate a plan for one's management and care. As a third year medical student, I am often presented with only the pathology and epidemiology of a disease or illness, and left to invision the person afflicted on my own. Dr. Romeyn helped to put a face on both the person/patient affected, as well as the physician actively caring for them. In addition, she still managed to convey the essentials that anyone - physician, patient, or friend - should know and understand. This is a very helpful book.

Book Description

This new edition of the highly successful short guide to the examination of the peripheral nervous system has been revised with new color illustrations and photographs throughout. As the standard short text on the subject, it's an essential reference tool for medical students, residents and clinical neurologists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2007-09-20

Every physician, regardless of specialty, should own this short book. For neurologists, its one of the small number of things you should have available for all patient encounters.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-03

A must for every neurology resident. Very good pictures showing anatomy and physical exam appropiate for almost every muscle.

5 out of 5 stars Seth@nmtmidwest.......2006-02-24

Aids to examination of the peripheral nervous system is a nice compact, quick reference book to primarily peripheral neuropathies and at the end, briefly of radiculopathies. The images of both muscle tests and cutaneous sensory areas are very clear. Text is short and to the point. Very helpful and well worth the low cost!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2002-10-01

I absolutely hate peripheral nerve disorders. That's probably because I'm not good at diagnosing them. But, if I had this book at the start of my training, perhaps things would be different. This book is an absolute gem. It has great illustrations and has complete listings of movements, muscles, nerves, and roots. It has diagrams of the plexuses as well. There is a handy table in the back on most common muscle movements, etc. It's biggest drawback is that it does not fit in a hospital coat's pocket.

5 out of 5 stars Reliable, pamphlet sized, clinical reference.......2002-01-23

New edition of a handy clinical reference that has been around for 50 years. Early editions had photos in B&W, color in this version adds nothing. For every muscle there is a photo of a clinical evaluation showing position of the limb etc and the instructions ("The patient tries to flex against resistance"). For each muscle there is listed the spinal segments and periferal nerve. Included are standard sensory maps and plexus diagrams. Fits into your instrument bag or white coat pocket. Worth getting if you see only 5 neuro-muscular problems a year!
