2 out of 5 stars Complicated language .......2007-09-29

The language in this book is very hard to understand. I took statistics when I was an undergrad and but this book is so hard to understand. The authors tried to show more steps in the math examples maybe try to make it easier for the reader but it just make it MUCH more complicated to follow. Sometimes I have to read my undergrad statistics book in order for me to understand the same thing it says in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Principles of Biostatistics.......2007-09-19

This book does not give step-by-step instructions on how to solve problems. Therefore, I feel it is not a good book. I still feel very lost after reading chapters in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hope this suggestion helps u decide.......2007-09-09

This is my first time that I purchased online. I got the book within 3 days and it's in a good condition. Cheaper, got a book, and on time...isn't it enough?

5 out of 5 stars Biostatistics simplified.......2007-06-27

Much easier to grasp than another text on the subject that I have experienced, (Biostatistics... A foundation for anlaysis in the Health Sciences; 8th Edition. Wayne W. Daniel). I am an MPH student with limited math background. Had a 4.0 going before my first experience with biostats. A "D" won't cut it in the program I am completing. Found an alternative Biostats course and the required text,(Principles of Biostats;Marcello Pagano), is much, much, easier for me to grasp. The real world examples and simplified methods make for an easier comprehension for those of us who lack a strong mathematic prerequisite.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - one of few!.......2007-03-23

I've read the other reviews, and seems either you love it or hate it. I used this at Harvard School of Public Health on my 3rd time through bio-statistics (college, med school, MPH). Only this time I got it right, and think it was the balance between some non-calculus theory and practical examples in this book. Not understanding probability distributions at all leads to misapplication, and misuse. I have frequently turned to this as "tune-up book" if I've been away too long. The exercised sets are helpful and "realistic"; however, I do understand the problem with text-books and teacher's manuals that give only 1/2 the answers.

Book Description

Principles of Population Genetics, Third Edition, provides a balanced presentation of theory and observation for students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In response to suggestions from students and instructors, the book has been trimmed more than 100 pages and rewritten with the goal to optimize its use as a teaching aid. It introduces the principles of genetics and statistics that are relevant to population studies, and examines the forces affecting genetic variation from the molecular to the organismic level. Integrated throughout the book are descriptions of molecular methods used to study variation in natural populations, as well as explanations of the relevant estimation theory using actual data. Chapter 1 presents the fundamental genetic and statistical concepts in population genetics. Chapter 2 reviews the types and prevalence of genetic variation in natural populations. This is followed in Chapter 3 by a detailed examination of the implications of random mating for one locus and multiple loci. Chapter 4 examines population subdivision and its consequences for the distribution of genetic variation among subpopulations, including the hierarchical F statistics used in estimating these effects. Chapters 5 through 7 deal with mutation, migration, natural selection in all its varieties, and the consequences of random genetic drift. Molecular population genetics, including coalescent theory, is the subject of Chapter 8. Quantitative genetics is covered in Chapter 9, from the standpoint of genetic variance and covariance components as well as with respect to molecular markers used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Applications of principles discussed in the text are illustrated by numerous examples of worked problems, using actual data. Each chapter end, in addition to a complete summary, offers several problems for solution, to reinforce and further develop the concepts.

Book Description

Public health surveillance is the systematic, ongoing assessment of the health of a community, based on the collection, interpretation, and use of health data. Surveillance provides information necessary for public health decision making. This text presents an organized approach to planning, developing, and implementing public health surveillance systems. It has a broad scope, discussing legal and ethical issues as well as technical problems. It goes beyond the surveillance of particular conditions to the basic elements common to the application of surveillance to any type of health-related problem. The Second Edition has been updated throughout and many chapters have been expanded. Several new chapters have been added on the changing healthcare information infrastructure, quality surveillance, pharmaceutical surveillance, and the use of surveillance information in marketing and advocacy. The standard text in this field, it will continue to serve as a textbook for public health students and a desk reference for public health practitioners.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Review of Principles and Practice of Public Health Surveillance.......2006-03-21

This text book is an excellent reference for epidemiologists and health professionals who need to establish surveillance systems. The text book takes the beginner by the hand and explains what to do (what are the essential tasks required to decide, what data do you need to collect, and what for what specific purpose you might use it) and how to do it (steps to take and considerations in management of systems and quality control) and how to make sense of the data you've collected (data analyses).

Not only is this text for beginners, but also for seasoned epidemiologists and other health professionals who are branching out into disease surveillance. I endorse it wholeheartedly.

1 out of 5 stars Obsolete text -- don't waste your time.......2002-06-15

Once upon a time this book may have been useful, but now this text is more than 20 years old and badly in need of a revision. You would be better off to read a more up-to-date work instead, such as the books by Rothman and Greenland, Clayton and Hills, or MacMahon and Trichopolos.

5 out of 5 stars KKM.......2000-08-01

This is a fine textbook, but I am compelled to respond to the first review. Nondifferential misclassification unfortunately does not always produce a bias towards the null. See more recent texts for details.

5 out of 5 stars Good discussion of misclassification bias.......1998-04-22

Most epidemiology texts I have seen do not show a proof of the commonly stated issue that misclassification bias always produces a bias toward the null. This text provides such a proof and does so eloquently

    Book Description

“The presentation is consistently excellent. One, the writing is lucid and organized in a way that should be very natural for the clinical reader. Two, the text requires no background in mathematics and uses a minimum of symbols. And, three, the methodological concepts and clinical issues are well integrated through a number of carefully prepared and comprehensive examples.” Greg Samsa, Associate Director, Duke Center for Clinical Health Policy Research If a patient is older or younger than, sicker or healthier than, taller or shorter than or simply different from the subjects of a study, do the results pertain? Clinical Epidemiology & Evidence-based Medicine is a resource for all health-care workers involved in applying evidence to the care of their patients. Using clinical examples and citing liberally from the peer-reviewed literature, the book shows how statistical principles can improve medical decisions. Plus, as Katz shows how probability, risk and alternatives are fundamental considerations in all clinical decisions, he demonstrates the intuitive basis for using clinical epidemiolgy as a science underlying medical decisions. After reading this text, the practitioner should be better able to access, interpret, and apply evidence to patient care as well as better understand and control the process of medical decision making.

      Book Description

Public health faces critical challenges ranging from outbreaks of new and old pathogens to the threat of bioterrorism and the impact of lifestyle and environmental changes on health. Modern tools of health surveillance and sound statistical practices are essential for meeting these challenges and providing accurate warnings about real public health threats without wasting resources on false alarms. Advances in statistical techniques, computing power and the Internet have led to many new approaches to monitoring population health, analyzing the data, and rapidly sharing it. This text explores the critical issues in the statistical analysis and interpretation of public health surveillance data. It covers statistical methods for detecting disease outbreaks and clusters, the use of survey methods, interpreting time trends and geographic patterns, exploratory statistical analysis of surveillance data, and web-based health reporting systems for the rapid detection of public health problems, among other topics. The methodological approaches are illustrated in discussions of several current public health issues, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, anthrax, health effects of particulate air pollution, and trends in prostate cancer. The methods are broadly applicable to surveillance systems and registries for numerous health conditions, e.g. infectious diseases, chronic diseases, adverse drug reactions. The book provides numerous illustrations, worked examples, and practical information for actually implementing the methods. It will serve as a reference for public health practitioners and as a textbook for courses on disease surveillance taken by students of statistics biostatistics, epidemiology or public health.

But it is a lot to spend on a book which doesn't cover anything new except for that which is experimental and quite a ways away before reaching your local theatres.

          Book Description

Neuroepidemiology is the epidemiologic study of neurological conditions. This fine text provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of research methods for conducting epidemiologic and clinical research on these conditions. It is aimed at neurologists, epidemiologists and public health professionals, as well as students of these disciplines. The book has three parts, each emphasizing the unique aspects of studying neurologic disorders. The first focuses on classic principles of epidemiologic and clinical research, including study design, sources of study bias, and methods for assessing the role of environmental and genetic factors in neurologic disorders. The second part covers each of the major neurologic disorders, with an emphasis of the methodologic aspects of studying these disorders and discussion of future research directions. The third part is devoted to clinical and translational research methods, including the design and conduct of clinical trials and prognostic studies, as well as the principles of health services research and evidence-based medicine. This textbook will give neurologists, epidemiologists, and their students the foundation for conducting rigorous epidemiologic and clinical research on neurologic disorders.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book - readable & comprehensive!.......2004-05-23

Having read other similar texts, I believe that this is the best book available on the topic of neuroepidemiology. This is the only book that gives a broad coverage of the study design and research principles for conducting clinical and epidemiologic research on neurological disorders. Research topics related to all of the major neurological disorders are addressed. I particularly liked the extensive use of real-life examples to illustrate important points.

The section on clinical epidemiology - clinical trials, prognostic studies and evidence-based neurology - is superb. Last but not least - this is the least expensive book on neuroepidemiology and far better than the others. Can't say enough good things!
