Poorly written and difficult to read.......2007-03-15
This book is written largely by European experts on Cellulite. There is much to learn and good referencing but the language is poor and difficult to read. Many of the statements and recommendations are difficult to evaluate in view of the variety of treatments and the lack of substantive clinical research.
After slogging through, it is still difficult to judge the appropriate management of this condition.

Book Description
Adipose Tissue and Adipokines in Health and Disease presents a comprehensive survey of adipose tissue, its physiological functions, and its role in disease. This volume spans the entire range of adipose tissue studies, from basic anatomical and physiological research to epidemiology and clinical studies. The authors-distinguished researchers, clinicians and epidemiologists-have incorporated groundbreaking recent studies into traditional models of adipose tissue properties. Chapters on well-known properties of adipokines leptin and adiponectin are complemented by an introduction to a novel view of adipose tissue as a dynamic organ that regulates systemic substrate availability and metabolism, along with a variety of other discrete functions. This novel concept is expanded as the role of adipose tissue in maintaining body homeostasis and the modulation of inflammatory and metabolic responses is discussed. Worldwide trends in obesity are discussed from an evolutionary perspective and causes of the current obesity epidemic are postulated. Additionally, researchers and clinicians examine the association and potential role of adipose tissue in disease mediation and offer epidemiological evidence. This volume concludes with a thoughtful and innovative discussion of various approaches to inducing and sustaining weight loss in obese patients and the health effects of such treatments. Adipose Tissue and Adipokines in Health and Disease provides a broad and substantial foundation for understanding new developments in adipose tissue biology and successfully integrating them into new research endeavors.
Book Description
This book/DVD set is a thoroughly illustrated "how-to" guide to facial fat transfer, a new facial rejuvenation procedure that allows the surgeon to sculpt the face and restore it to its natural beauty. Fat is harvested from fattier areas of the body through a suction technique and injected into the face with a small cannula. The fat transferred becomes incorporated as living tissue and the results are extremely long lasting. The book guides readers through this procedure with easy-to-follow instructions and more than 200 full-color step-by-step illustrations.
Two DVDs accompanying the book contain videos demonstrating the procedure and pitfalls.
Book Description
An experimental pathologist and molecular geneticist, Philip Wood uses gene-knockout technology to study the way mouse genes regulate the metabolism of fat--research that provides insights into the workings of fatty-acid metabolism in humans and what can happen when that metabolic balance goes awry. Based on the classes he regularly teaches to first- and second-year medical students, Wood's book reviews the individual and public health burden of obesity and clarifies often-used, but often inadequately explained, terms employed in the continuing cultural and scientific debate about excess fat. He explains the role of fat in the healthy body, how fat is made, stored, and burned, and demonstrates how excess fat can lead to an array of metabolic disorders and diseases, from hypercholesterolemia and insulin resistance to diabetes. He reviews what recent research can tell us about specific genes or groups of genes that can lead to specific metabolic disorders. He explains the science behind common weight-loss regimens and why those regimens might succeed or fail, and reviews the complex interplay of hormones, genes, and stress in the way our bodies deal with fat through the life cycle. How Fat Works is a concise, clear, and up-to-date primer on the workings of fat, and essential reading for professionals entering careers in medicine and public health administration or anyone wanting a better understanding of one of our most urgent health crises.

Metabolic biochemistry for Dummies.......2007-08-06
Any one who is serious about achieving health - not just using medicine to put out the brushfires of disease we develop as a result of not knowing how to care for our bodies will benefit from this book. With this knowledge it's much easier to wade through the mountains of hype and sales pitches for junk diets we're all buried under. It's serious biochemistry presented in language anyone can follow.
Interesting but has important omissions.......2006-07-17
Oveall this is a fascinating book on a very timely topic. Author Wood makes it clear that the creation and maintenance of fat in the body are very complex subjects. We are certainly a long way from a sure-fire cure for obesity. Wood explains that Type II diabetes is considered by some scientists to be a disease of fat metabolism, which I thought was interesting. I enjoyed hearing about the latest research on low-fat versus low-carb diets. Dieting looks easy on paper--just eat fewer calories than you burn--but very difficult to do. Almost all diets are effective in that they will cause an initial loss of weight, but the lost weight is mostly water. There simply is no diet plan with a record of real effectiveness in long-term weight loss with maintenance of the lost weight.
I really enjoyed Wood's chapter on media coverage of health research. He points out that most health research findings are reported in a way that makes it difficult for people to really understand and use the information.
I was surprised at some of what Wood left out of the book. Wood discusses cholesterol-lowering drugs at length. However, he says nothing about the immense subsidies in the U.S. which go into production of corn syrup, sugar, and high-cholesterol meat and dairy products. Wood agrees that we need to eat more vegetables and fruits, but he ignores the reasons why soda, doughnuts and cookies are cheap and fruit and vegetables are expensive. Agricultural supports and other government programs distort the costs of the food we buy to an amazing extent. Wood discusses the traditional Mediterannean diet as an example of the best way to eat; but he doesn't discuss the incentives in place against eating that way.
Wood also leaves out the reasons why Americans don't exercise. He ignores the huge subsidies in place which discourage physical activity and encourage automobile use. One of the most important of these is free and subsidized parking. Most U.S. localities have regulations requiring businesses and residences to provide a certain number of parking spaces. The idea is to make certain enough parking spaces are provided so that parking can always be free. This sort of well-meaning regulation has extraordinarily perverse effects, spreading out cities so that walking is unpleasant and impractical. Most U.S. zoning regulations favor automobiles, often in subtle but powerful ways that most people aren't aware of. People assume that subsidies are needed for mass transit systems and other automobile alternatives; this is not the case. If the playing field were really level, automobiles would lose out big time. Lack of exercise is not just a personal failing by people who don't go to the gym enough. For more on this, see Donald Shoup's book "The High Cost of Free Parking," or Howard Kunstler's book "The Geography of Nowhere."
Great resource for both Health Care Professionals and Lay readers.......2006-06-30
I think this is a great book. In all the books on diet and exercise that are out there, this is the first one that looks at exactly what fat is (it is more complex than you think!), how it affects our bodies, and which approaches truly help to battle the bulge and disease. Wood explains the complex role of fat in the body, as well as common misconceptions about diet, exercise, and the role of genetics. His logical and straightforward approach keeps the reader's interest and makes it easy to understand. His book is extensively researched and dispels common diet myths based on the science. He explains why some diets just don't work, and helps the reader to understand the way fat affects the body. It is refreshing to read a book that is not touting the latest diet fad, or succumbing to the deceptive idea that fat can be healthy, but explains the connection between obesity and disease, and the individual differences in management. Worth my money...Great book!
simple facts about fat.......2006-06-28
I enjoyed reading this book because it was easy to understand the pathogenesis of obesity and its related disorders.
Dr.Wood has written this book in a simple language. The chapter dealing with genetics of obesity is very insightful.
Philip Wood - joined at the hips with the diet industry.......2006-06-18
It's amazing that this book, published in 2006, totally IGNORES most of the obesity research save for a couple of data dredge studies which prove what the author obviously wants to prove and that is that fat is horribly unhealthy and the worst more expensive health threat. Nothing about the Cooper Institute studies of 30 years showing obesity risk to be insignificant when compared to normal weight people and fitness to be the thing which greatly decreases risk. Nothing about Leibel's research showing the "powerful biochemical system" which goes into play when a person tries to maintain a lower weight than their bodies want - that system which involves AT LEAST the four hormones Leibel identified but could involve many more and that system which causes 95 percent of people to regain lost weight within 4 years. On the contrary, Wood states early in the book that "obesity is curable" identifying gastric bypass surgery as "curing" diabetes etc in addition to taking off excess weight...without bothering to mention that MOST patients are expected to regain at least 50 to 60 percent of the weight they initially lost, and that within 3 years, diabetes etc comes back even AFTER a gastric bypass and that a full 25 to 50 percent (depending on whom you talk to) regain ALL the weight initally lost. Obesity is the next great health threat, states Wood in his opening chapter, after smoking. He "forgets" that according to the CDC obesity LINKED diseases kill 110,000 per year and that link between obesity and disease IS NOT a strong one at all (also says the CDC). He "forgets" that cancer kills 557,500 people a year - fully FIVE TIMES as many as obesity related disease and cancer is, according to the American Cancer Society 85 percent lifestyle caused (obesity is said to be 20-40 percent lifestyle caused). Is cancer not an expensive drain on the health care system since chemo treatments are extremely expensive? To charge this much money for a book which ignores MOST of the obesity research is sad.... forget this one and get a REALLY GOOD book about obesity which shows what science REALLY says like, for example, THE DIET MYTH by Paul Campos.

Book Description
Gérard Ailhaud and a team of laboratory experts and clinicians describe in step-by-step detail the major techniques needed for the study of adipose tissue and cells. Drawn from both in vivo and in vitro studies, these readily reproducible methods cover a broad range of techniques, including the choice of adipose tissue depot and of morphological techniques for work on both brown adipose tissue (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT). Major treatment is accorded to the isolation, subcellular fractionation, and transfection of low density adipocytes as well as metabolic aspects of nutrient uptake and assays of nutrient and ion fluxes. Innovative and highly practical, Adipose Tissue Protocols offers endocrinologists, physiologists, cell biologists, and pharmacologists a gold-standard collection of proven methods for effective research on adipose tissue from the nutritional to the physiological and the molecular levels.

Ideally, being healthy isn't just about being a certain weight: It's about having all the systems of your body performing at optimum levels for as long a time as possible. Mackie Shilstone, in his role as medical advisor to professional athletes, presents a complex plan in The Fat-Burning Bible that incorporates supplements, sleep and stress management alongside the standards of diet and exercise.
The first section of the book helps you establish your honest starting point--it's easy to be at an acceptable weight but have unacceptably high fat percentages, cholesterol or blood sugar. Establishing this point involves a fair amount of measuring and math, and includes checklists that will help you identity potential concerns like Syndrome X or thyroid problems.
Diet and nutrition follow; the section encompasses fairly complex suggestions on intake percentages as well as simple meal plans and recipes. Portion control figures highly--it's back to the old 'four ounces of skinless chicken breast' as a basic building block. A short section on supplements refers in a general way to recent research, but is more of an introduction than complete system. More time is devoted to the exercise program, but this could be more complex than a typical dieter feels ready for. Clear photos show off specific exercises, but they require regular trips to the gym or a set of dumbbells at home. The last section, which Shilstone suggests photocopying, is a day-to-day journal that allows you to check off goals and note areas for further work. It's a helpful tool, but also requires a fair amount of dedication.
Ultimately, this book seems designed for those who are already fairly fit, but are hoping to achieve a more ideal version of good health. It could be especially helpful for amateur athletes--if you're prepping for a marathon or other big event, this might be just the tool you need. Jill Lightner

Great Insight, however, do your own Research........2007-06-02
I am a licensed Chiropractor and studied Biochemistry as an undergraduate. Much of what was detailed in this book was a helpful review for me, as well as providing some new insightful information - particularly in reference to the "reverse fat pattern phenomenon" that was mentioned early on in the book. I disagree, however, with the author's recommendation of a (40% Carbohydrate + 30% Protein) diet. I would decrease the Carbohydrate % and increase the Protein %. If someone were attempting to lose weight, I would not recommend severely restricting their carbohydrate intake - as Dr. Atkins would suggest, but to restrict it to approximately 30%. This is still less than Mackie Shilstone recommends, however. I would also recommend consuming 50% of your diet as Proteins vs. only the 30% that he suggests. I believe that an individual can do so without causing their body to enter "Ketosis" and still lose weight safely at the same time. Other than that, the book is right on. There is so much conflicting information out there that it is refreshing to find a book without all the "fatty" information and just the helpful facts.
Exactly as titled.......2006-08-08
I bought this book after seeing a few bad reviews along with all the good ones. Some critics where fair, there is a lot of things in this book that have been said before, but honestly, when was there a big revolution in getting healthy? The only new things in this category are fad diets and we all know they don't work. This book is very well written and it is not only written for the grossly overweight who have tried everything, but it is also written for people who are trying to help health issues such as high cholesterol and diabetes. Mr. Shilstone does a very good job explaining why things do and do not work rather than just saying it. All of the food recipes work well and he makes sure to make the point of not leaving large groups of foods off your diet, also everything he suggests is very satisfying food that tastes good too.
The supplements can be a bit overwhelming if you aren't used to taking lots of pills every day. As for the "9 foods that burn fat" that another reviewer pointed out don't exist, the actual title of that chapter is "foods that burn fat", the chapter number is 9, so that is just a misunderstanding. This book is more about fixing your matabolism so that you can lose fat and not lean muscle mass, if that is not your goal, or you are not willing to invest an hour a day to exercise, you will not fully benefit from this book. With that said, do not be scared by the full hour, this is not a "gym rat" type of workout, it is not designed to become a bodybuilder, it is set up to get your muscles into shape to burn excess calories.
The Fat Burning Baloney.......2005-08-03
This book offers nothing new on the weight loss or fat burning front. Simply pages and pages of regergitating whats already "out there". The book constist of 80% therories and 20% techniques. I was particularly frustrated with the section title 9 Foods That Burn Fat. I read and reread this section and it DOES NOT list ANY foods, let alone 9. The whole chapter consist of calorie counting and "suggested meal plans", no specfics as title indicates. My whole point was to learn WHICH foods I need to make sure to incorporate into my own meal plan.
The only benefit I got from this book was the excercise plans which included great photos/instructions. Buying an excercise video would be more beneficial. Overall if you are a health novice and have no idea that body fat is bad, starving your self doesnt work, etc. then this is a good buy.
Amazing -- And I've Only Just Begun.......2005-05-07
I'm not sure why Susan Hogloch would write in the review included in the book description that this approach would appeal mostly to men. I urge you other women reading this out there to disregard that comment. The chapter on supplements which boost metabolism alone is worth the price of this book. I can say that because, to date, that's the only part of the book I've had time to put into practice. Just with the addition of the supplements over the span of about 2 months, I lost 14 pounds. That weight came off in exactly the places he writes about (reverse fat gain syndrome) that often indicates a messed-up metabolism. I can only imagine what will happen once I adjust my exercise regime to his plan and start following the nutritional guidelines. I'm a believer and have been recommending the book to my friends.
The whole package.......2005-03-26
While Lose Your Love Handles, one of Shilstone's previous efforts, was a solid work, I wanted to see more specific guidance on how to work the rest of the body and incorporate his core training into a complete program.
A few years later, Shilstone delivers.
The program is extremely well-rounded, with a mix of cardio, weights, core training and intervals, plus balanced meal plans. If you're loooking for 5-minute workouts, forget it. You won't have to live in the gym (he also has a home strength training workout you can use), but you will have to invest about an hour a day, six days a week to exercise. This is definitely not a something for nothing plan, but if fat loss and getting in better shape is a priority, you can find a way to do it.
The meal plans are good. I didn't see much that appealed to my taste buds, but with a little creativity you could probably come up with some good "Mackie Meals" on your own.

The best overview on Thermogenesis ever!.......2006-02-06
This book is amazing! It completely explains all the factors related to obesity - it's cause and it's true cures. Moreover, it gives the most detailed explanations of what Thermogenesis is and which substances will "turn on" this fat burning dynamo on in the human body. As a person who has struggled with obesity for most of his life, this book was an eye opener into the real cause of my disease - lack of "FIRE" or Thermogensis. After reading this book, you'll understand why certain "fat burning" pills will work and why a low-carb diet is best for fat loss. Bottom-line: Dr.Mowrey is genius in the field of obesity research and this book belongs on every "weight conscious" person's shelf. Enjoy!
