Excellent book for Biology GRE Preparation.......2007-10-07
Although it's not marketed this way, Schaum's outline is a concise yet complete study guide for the Biology GRE subject test. Topics like the endocrine system, plant evolution and development, and nutrition, which are given short shrift in the Princeton Review and Kaplan study guides, are fully covered in this book. More diagrams are provided (although there are no color figures - ditto for PR and Kaplan), as well as handy review tables. The explanations are at an appropriate level for GRE examinees: there is not too much extraneous information. Occasionally, the authors will throw in a humorous aside or phrasing (see def. of sexual selection, parts of Ch.17, etc.), which makes you pay closer attention, but overall the tone is serious (no BS analogies or condescension here).
At the end of every chapter are worked problems in essay and multiple choice formats. These questions cover GRE material but aren't presented in the same style. If you're using this book for GRE preparation, you should also consider buying a book with one or more practice tests in order to familiarize yourself with the exam format.
This Book's Got It All!.......2007-01-17
I bought this book to prepare the DAT. It helped so much and I couldn't have made it without it. I do recommend it, it's way better than those common books dealing with how to prepare the DAT, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, they're just not as specific as this one. Totally worth the money, go for it!
Useful book for recalling established knowledge.......2006-11-08
Well organized, full text book with essential topics on biology. Excellent tool for GRE exams and anyone with basic knowledge on biology, who needs a quick reviewing.
GOOD Reference, LOTS to Read.......2006-07-25
My favorite chapters included Kingdom Fungi, Photosynthesis, excretory system and structure and function of chloroplasta. Like a previous reviewer, I used this book to prepare for the biology section of the DAT (Dental Admission Test). This is a good reference, it explains with examples that get the facts to stick to your brain. Yes, it requires studying, but then again what subject doesn't?
Another great book I totally recommend is "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations". Volumes 1,2 and 3. It is written by Patrick Leonardi. It is an excellent review for the biology portion of the DAT exam..
Too much information... Just make it simple.......2006-02-27
I was looking to get up to speed to teach an intro bio class for community college. After reviewing bio texts, I bought this book thinking that it would be a great summary, review and offer quiz questions for bio. I wanted it to be to the point, revelant, and a pithy supplement. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This book didn't highlight or sum up bio. It went into in-depth discussions that might be of interest to grad students. I looked at Biology the Easy Way and liked it much better.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2007-09-08
Based on protocols in this book, I devised methods to complete my own experiments. I found the insights contained in the book completely indispensable. The range of topics it contains and the detail with which Freshney explains each point made the process of designing conditions for experiments rational and approachable. I highly recommend this book.
useful book.......2007-08-09
There are not a lot of glossy pretty pictures, which is a good thing for a no-nonsense instruction manual that gets the point across with what pictures it did have. I found it to be a very good complement to my cell culture class. Everything I learned in the lab was put into context nicely.
Save on Textbook.......2006-08-15
I purchased this book with a description of like new. I would say this is new. The previous person who used this did not even break in the binder. This is an excellent reference book, I have enjoyed reading the text up to this point.
Best Basic Book on Tisssue Culture.......2006-07-07
For many years Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells has been the gold standard of tissue culture reference books. This new edition adds and updates many techniques and continues to be the best book in its area. I use it extensively both for my own research and in teaching classes on tissue culture.
The best book on cell culture.......2005-01-09
Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells is a great book. It is writen on an easy style, it is concise and complete at the same time and it does teach you all the basics (and a little bit more) of cell culture. When I was doing my masters I didn't have a lot of help with my cell culture experiments and this book was fundamental for my research. The book covers everything, starting from the biology of cultured cells, equipments, design of the lab and asseptic technique and going all the way to primary culture, cloning and selection, cell separation, characterization, differentiation and more. The book (hard cover) is pretty resistant and it easily stands going to the bench (where you surely will be using it a lot). If you are thinking about spending money on a book about cell culture techniques this is the book! Don't think twice.

Customer Reviews:
Best undergrduate math refresher ever.......2007-10-07
Wish I had come across this book earlier. Other undergraduate math refresher/review books are either too basic or too formulaic (if I had wanted a table of functions I would have bought one). The stress is clearly on concepts, followed by techniques. The book is a great review of all the oohs and aahs of undergraduate and high school mathematics that you have forgotten over the years. I graduated from high school 15 years ago and by page 3 I was doing derivatives from first principles. Richard Courant's "What is Mathematics?" would make an excellent companion to this book. For example I complemented the first two chapters on calculus with the chapters on number systems and, limits and continuity from Courant's book and I truly felt that my calculus review was complete.
A really helpful book.......2007-04-04
This is a great book for someone who did his undergraduate studies in Engineering or Chemistry (like me) and now is entering a Physics program. It is a great review of most of the important stuff in Math for Physics, without the boring mathematical style: straight to the point with relevant examples.
Another good point is that it has problems scattered INSIDE the text, which enforce you to do them. Most of them are interesting and in a physical context (as: Lorentz transformations - as an example of a "rotation" matrix , Maxwell equations - an exercise in vector analysis etc.)
In addition, I don't agree with the reviewers who claim that you cannot actually LEARN new topics from it. I never learned "complex functions" during my undergrad, and actually managed to learn it with Shankar - at least the things important to a physicist.
A drawback: a chapter about group theory could be useful.
Kind of a last resort.......2005-02-06
This book tries to cover pretty much all the mathematical methods you'd need in college-level physics if you haven't had much experience with them before. The trouble is that that is a LOT of math, and trying to cover that in a book this size is just asking for trouble.
If you don't know any of this stuff, this book is going to kill you. It covers multivariable and vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, functions of a complex variable, etc. That is maybe 4-5 different math courses. The idea is that physicists don't really need the rigor of theoretical math, they just need to learn the "tools" so they can do the practical, applied stuff.
This book is good if you already have a general idea of these concepts and just want to get the important parts.
A Quick math methods book.......2001-06-19
.If you enjoyed Klepner & Ramsay 's "Quick Calculus" as a school student for its engaging and dearly wished there was an undergrad math methods book in that style! The answer is this book. You may not find a work book type fromat like "Quick calculus" . But let me assure you despite the formal style and Prof Shankar's repute for being verbose you will find it like a rhaphsody and yet in coherent english. I only dearly wish Prof Shankar would kill some research time to write a Graduate level fitness programme. I think all the previous reviewers justly awarded 5 stars to this book. To those raters responisble for eating half a star , let me say there is no other engaging lively and painless math review than this. If you find this book painful I don't know what to say . But on the contrary of you thought the book was too easy then read the title it is a fitness programme not a discourse like Morse & Feshbach or Courant & Hilbert.
An excellent math review for physics.......2000-04-08
This book covers the basic areas of math needed for physics. It is quite readable and useful for self-study. It covers the standard topics in a concise fashion, but in sufficient detail to be useful. I used it as a personal math refresher after being away from advanced physics for some years. It gave me what I needed.
Book Description
Pharmaceutical formulation of peptides and proteins has become an important part of modern drug development. Many new drugs are based on peptide or protein recombinant technology going hand in hand with more traditional pharmaceutical formulation. In order to develop products with optimal characters, it is important to give scientists interdisciplinary knowledge and a thorough understanding of the complex nature of pharmaceutical formulation of peptides and proteins. This comprehensive volume brings the different aspects of peptide and protein formulation into focus, beginning with the fundamentals of the production of peptides and proteins, ranging from peptide synthesis and recombinant DNA technology to protein purification. It discusses the characterization and chemical stability of peptides and proteins, before moving on to formulation, detailing peptides and proteins in solution and as suspensions, as well as lyophilized peptide and protein products. There follows a case study on drug delivery systems for alternative routes of administration. Finally, regulatory aspects are discussed in terms of chemical and pharmaceutical documentation. Each chapter is written by experts in their respective areas. Scientists in the industry and academia, and postgraduate students in pharmaceutical science will find this a valuable resource, which can be dipped in to as a reference, or studied as a whole.

Accelrys advertisement.......2007-01-17
This book describes what is essentially docking calculations in the context of the Accerlys software. The text is very qualitative and does not provide enough instruction to do any "molecular modeling". It seems to be more guidlines for various software packages sold by Accerlys.

Book Description
This book is a broad survey covering the fundamental concepts and current state of research in biomembranes. It is intended as a text suitable for graduate level courses or as a reference work for individuals who are either already involved in membrane research or are interested in entering the field. Portions of the text in addition contain information which is particularly valuable to students engaged in laboratory research on biomembranes, e.g., discussions of experimental techniques, chemical structures, tabulated data, and numerous references to facilitate using the literature. Those parts of the text relating to transport proteins and receptors are unique in their perspective and breadth of coverage. In addition, the chapters on membrane enzymology and on small molecule interactions contain information difficult to find elsewhere. A conscious attempt has been made to tie together numerous areas into an overall perspective on the current state of affairs.
