Book Description
How does one define the concept of "family"? Is it primarily a biological link, or purely a social construction? Can it be a combination of both? Does it have to be? In this age of single parents, alternative lifestyles, and joint custody, "family" has become a fluid term which reflects a sweeping change in society -- from the rigid structure of the nuclear family to a more diverse and inclusive circle of people that one refers to as Òfamily.Ó In this revision of their classic work in family therapy issues and techniques, the authors propose Òa new and more comprehensive way to think about human development and the life cycle,Ó by widening the perspective of family therapy to include diversity of family forms and lifestyles, as well as cultural diversity. Their expanded view of family includes the impact and issues at multiple levels of the human system: the individual, family households, the extended family, the community, the cultural group, and the larger society. The new edition offers lively and dynamic writing, with contributed chapters by some of the best-known therapists and experts in family therapy. Some issues with expanded focus include race, class, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, spirituality, politics, work, time, community, values, and belief systems. Social workers, psychologists, nurses, and family therapists.
Customer Reviews:
racist, biased, and lacking in helpful information.......2006-12-31
The lack of practical, usable information in this book was unbelievable. Maybe if you have never, ever, in any way considered these issues it would be helpful, but I doubt it, as there was nothing that delved beyond surface, common sense information. The gross overgenderalizations about race and culture were offesive and shocking coming from people in the field. The only thing I took from the book was a heightened awareness of the judgemental biases of people -- even those claiming to be fighting against those things.
Decent textbook hindered by political biases.......2006-11-04
This textbook is a decent summary of the various family life cycle issues. However, the authors' obvious political biases and leanings interfere with a balanced perspective and with the content of the book. Several people in my master's level class found the book to be biased and unhelpful in certain areas.
The book should not be recommended for University programs.......2005-11-12
I am very disappointed, could not force myself to finish it! This book should not be recommended for University programs. It is biased, full of stereotyping, and has "popular", rather than scientific references (with all my respect to Daniel Goldman's Emotional Intelligence commercial success). Textbooks should be professional and free of political agendas.
Caustic Personal Agenda.......2005-09-02
I actually looked forward to reading this text, but upon furthr examination, found it to be a very "glass-half-empty" approach to the family life cycle. It is blatantly obvious that the 2 authors have their own political agenda to cram down our throats. Their vitrolic accusations against males, whites, Christians, etc. insight me to become an advocate for those they discriminate against - to expose their hypocritic instructions to be respectful, empathetic and flexible toward others. And by the way, for "experts" to use the term "homophobic" is a clinical and education travesty. To discriminate against those who do not condone the lifestyle by calling them names is simply politically correct, immature, and evidence of their agenda.
The authors' agenda overrides all else.......2003-05-25
I used this book, which came highly recommended, to teach a graduate-level course in Family Therapy. At first glance it seemed like a useful text, having earned a great deal of praise from other professors. However, the book was a disappointment to both myself and my students.
While I would not go so far as to say that the book contained no useful information, much of the book's potential utility was overshadowed by the authors' transparent political agenda. An example of good clinical advice provided by the authors was to ask wealthy families, in an initial interview, how they are using their funds to help the poor. Coming across with this overtly judgmental and clinically irrelevant question in the first interview is clearly not the way to win over a troubled family.
When studying the book, it was often possible to forget that families seeking therapy may actually have troubles of their own. The articles in the book focused largely on sociopolitical issues. Obviously, one cannot discount the influence of the larger context; however, struggles with gender unfairness in the workplace are rarely the presenting problem which drives an entire family into a therapist's office. Perhaps it was for this reason that focused, practical clinical advice for the budding clinician was nearly absent from many of the articles.
Pragmatics aside, the book was also lacking in terms of scholarship. A variety of grand claims were made by various authors with limited citations to support these claims. Despite the reference lists at the end of each chapter, I found it jarring to read several consecutive paragraphs without footnotes describing, for example, the "typical" presentation of clients from different cultural groups. There was also a surprising tendency on the part of some authors to make detailed references to their personal lives in the article. While anecdotes can certainly be illustrative, they should not serve as the basis of an article.
Overall, I was very disappointed in this book and would not assign it again. While there was some useful information embedded in a few of the articles, on the whole this book attests to the need to keep textbooks agenda-free.

Whether it is chosen or thrust upon you, change brings both opportunities and turmoil. Bridging a unfathomable Gap in our life from work to retirement.......2007-07-17
It is now almost fifteen years since I entered into the challenging world of retirement. In no time at all, I found myself emulating the comment of another retiree to the effect that he was busier in retirement than he ever had been! At one of my retirement dinner ceremonies, a young lady came up to me and said, "Thank you for all that you have done and I think that you will find this book quite interesting!" I read the book in the next few days and its wisdom and humor have been with me ever since. It has so much to give to us beyond retirement!
Since that time I would say that I have easily given away to my "retiring friends" at least forty copies of this book. Each time I have echoed the words of the original giver with the additional request to let me know what their reactions were. The unanimous sentiment was that the book provided so many helpful insights and now they are giving it away as well.
I would only emphasize one point that is made in the book, we need to plan ahead for this event of retirement. It is not something we just step into having closed the door to our office.

Best Help for Job Changes.......2007-07-03
Bill Bridges does a great job of helping folks though the major transitions in life - job changes, marriage/divorce/death, having a child. I've used this book as a foundation for helping people who are out of work deal with the uncertainty and feelings of loss so they are in a better position to find and get that new job. This is a gift book for all your friends who are facing a transition.
SPEEDY SERVICE.......2007-03-19
I RECEIVED THE BOOK SO FAST YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS HAND DELIVERED FROM AROUND THE CORNER
Very insightful........2007-02-13
On behalf of the millions of us facing major life changes such as retirement or the loss of a parent or spouse, I found this book to be timely and very helpful in explaining the 'transition' to a different life paradigm. And what a relief to know that the 'transition' can happen before the change. I am recommending it to my fellow "boomer" friends!
The Gift that Keeps on Giving.......2007-01-15
This is one book that every person born should have on their bookshelf! I'm only sorry it took me 56 years of "changes" vs "transitions" to find it. I'm buying a copy for all my friends.

Book Description
In this fascinating book,
Gary Renard and his Ascended Master Teachers, Arten and Pursah, teach you how to integrate advanced spiritual principles into your everyday life. Doing so leads beyond theory to an experience of the Divine and the undoing of the ego. Your progress will be accelerated to such a degree that, with continued practice, you can’t help but stop the need to reincarnate . . . once and for all.
Like Gary’s first book, The Disappearance of the Universe, this work elaborates on the teachings of two spiritual classics, The Gospel of Thomas and A Course in Miracles. By focusing on a unique brand of quantum forgiveness, rather than the old-fashioned kind, and taking the understanding of the importance of thought up to a whole new level, your goal will become nothing less than to break the cycle of birth and death.
Customer Reviews:
It's Up To You,.. Not A Book.......2007-10-08
A very important fact that the author neglected to mention is that reincarnation is UP TO YOU. You decide if you want to come back. Many people decide not to. There is NO CYCLE, I know first hand. I actually go to a real medium, the deceased teacher that comes through confirms that, along with numerous books written by well known authors like George Anderson, Jane Roberts (Seth Material)etc. Pick up "The Eternal Validity of the Soul" by Seth, if you want real answers.
I am recommending this book to everyone I know.......2007-10-03
This book picks up where The Disappearance of The Universe leaves off, and the story continues... And it is surely the most incredible, powerful, and life changing story I have ever read. Mr. Renard takes us along on his continuing journey with his two ascended masters who teach us accelerated forgiveness techniques. It is through reading this second book that I feel even more awakened to the truth of what this world is, what I am, and how to get Home. Through Mr. Renard's teachings I am not only awakening, I have at long last found my true calling and am now on an entirely new path that I enjoy and love. This is really something after the traumatic past from which I have emerged. If I can heal from sexual assault and years of self-destructive behaviors, then so can others. Thank you Mr. Renard for writing a book that gives some tools that have the power to truly change lives. I am recommending this book to everyone I know.
Your Immortal Realty.......2007-09-26
Very good book. This is a subject, that I believe very strongly in. Read this book with an open mind, and you will enjoy it. I wish everyone would open their minds, and consider what Gary has to say.
disappointed.......2007-09-21
Felt duped.
Gary has given me fodder to practice forgiveness after lying in his DU book.
Is he adding to the universal hypnotism of "this world"?
Is he discrediting the REAL channeling like A Course in Miracles?
The Next Step For Sincere Spiritual Seekers.......2007-09-10
Gary Renard does it again! YIR is indeed destined to become a classic along with the few books that are truly aimed at undoing the only block we have to the awareness (and experience)of Loves' presence. This book gives us the advanced version of forgiveness and explains why we mistakenly value being "right" rather than being happy or peaceful. It's a clear map to enlightenment and a wonderfully humorous one too!
All in all, I couldn't put it down; it's the next step for anyone who's sincere about Spiritual Awakening and ending the cycle of birth and death.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

"The most compelling book ever written on personal transition and transformation. If you are concerned about your own renewal and the renewal of our planet, you must read this book."--James M. Kouzes, coauthor of The Leadership Challenge, Second Edition
Customer Reviews:
I strongly recommend this book to all who are interested in the quality of life & peak performance in life's remaining years!.......2006-07-20
Together with Richard Leider's books (particularly, Life Skills, The Power of Purpose & The Inventurers) & Richard Bolles' Parachute book, this book has been most pivotal in helping me to navigate my mid-life transition during the early 90's.
It has been beautifully crafted with warmth, passion, clarity & mastery of content. It provides a refreshingly optimistic perspective on mid-life transition & self-renewal. Best of all, it is solidly backed by several decades of research & consulting work at the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, California.
I remember vividly when I first encountered this book in the early 90's, it was actually the back page of the book which attracted my attention: "Designing a rich adult life for a world in transition." followed by a quotation: "The Adult Years will help you to think about your life - & to stay vital all your life."
At that point in time, I was pondering about what I wanted to do with the second half of my life. I was 43 years old & a corporate rat then. I was working in quiet desperation.
Frankly, I was looking damned good...but actually going nowhere!
So, I started a frantic search for all kinds of seminars, workshops, books, magazines & resources to fuel my mind. I was very glad to bump into this book by chance. I particularly liked what the author has said in the book: "...adulthood is a cyclical experience that can be a ripening of our strengths rather than dull repetition or a dizzling merry-go-round....it is possible in a culture that glamourises youth more than it values maturity, to design a coherent, mature life that is resilient enough not only to survive but to be visionary & regenerating...by unleashing our own personal forces of self renewal, we can bring forth ideas & leadership for social renewal."
The author has masterfully protrayed the cycles of self-renewal through the various chapters of the book, as follows:
Part I: The Emerging Adult
1 The Adult Dilemma
2 Finding Possibilities in Cyclical Lives
Part II: The Cycle of Change - Life Structures & Transitions
3 The Patterns of Change
4 From Dreaming to Restructuring
5 from Disengaging to Cocooning
6 From Self renewal to New Beginnings
Part III: The Life Cycle
7 Meaning & Mission Across the Life Cycle
8 The Twenties & Thirties
9 The Forties & Fifties
10 The Sixties & seventies
11 Getting from Here to There: Six Principles of Life Cycle Change
Part IV: Adults & Global Change
12 Valueing the Global Context
13 The Self Renewing Adult, the Self Renewing Society
Over the many years since my first encounter with the book, I have often gone back to read some of the passages to seek further insights about empowerment throughout my adult years.
Every busy profesional would benefit from this marvellous book when coming of age. It is intelligently crafted & extremely helpful in providing a sensible framework for understanding - & appreciating - adult transitions & personal change.
In concluding this review, I enthusiastically recommend this book to all who are interested in the quality of life & peak performance in life's remaining years!
describes common feelings of being 40 years and older.......2004-07-30
When I got my first grey hairs I started feeling so many different things about life and the process of aging. This book explained the different feelings I was having. It was a great relief to realize my feelings were so common. The words are easy to understand. The stories about others who have their own issues as they age are good ones to learn from. I recommend this book for any one feeling a bit perplexed about the aging process.
New Beginnings for the Young at Heart.......2001-11-27
This is the best conceputalizaton of the second half of life that I have ever read.It puts theory into practice and teaches that one can stay young and continually evolving with the proper attitute, learning and social environments tempered with an active healthy life style. The concept of retirement is no longer valid in the 21st century. We must think of
'protirement'now that can live to be centegenarians.
We must entrepreneur our futures and proactively build
on the new or retooled skills of the previous years. Our tasks become:redefining values, renewing our life's purpose, continually training to stay ahead in the ever-changing world and transition gracefully with our wisdom into new and exciting terrain. Along with the challenge of growth and change,
we bring the wisdom of the years.
Coaches will help us with change and transition, for they are not
simply 'change agents', but 'change masters' trained to accompany up on our journey,to help guide our vision of the
life we long for before we say 'adieu'.
The Adult Years - Great Resource and Compelling Reading.......2000-01-29
Lot's of valuable information. Written in a conversational style that is easy to read. Helpful insights and practical advice. A real resource to help you understand the life you are living.

The Message of We Are Not Separate..........2007-08-04
This book is my bible. I take it everywhere, and I buy it as gifts for my friends, searching for healing, whether through tough relationships, illness, bad fortune, etc. This "non-religious" based prayer book can be understood by all. There is no religious distinction, but there is a warmth and comfort that comes over one when reading through the prayers which conjure such "feeling". I took excerpts of Marianne's prayers and used it for our Thanksgiving blessing...family loved it...so down to earth. If we could get away from our "separate" beliefs, so much peace and harmony could be the healing that is needed for humanity. I commend Marianne for her strengths in keeping the awareness of the light in all of humanity at the forefront.
Excellent........2007-04-02
A beautiful book that I take everywhere with me. The power of prayer and positive thought have made me a more peaceful and stronger person.
Illuminata: A Return to Prayer.......2007-03-12
Truly Williamson's best publication! I keep a copy on my writing desk at home and my desk at work and rely on it often for "just the 'write' word".
Beware final pages before giving as a gift.......2006-06-01
I enjoyed the prayers in this book very much. I have enjoyed A Return to Love, A Woman's Worth, Healing the Soul of America and Everyday Grace.
I almost had this book wrapped and ready to give to friend when I read the last four or five pages. I was shocked at the type of language used in this section. It was very disappointing that what could have been a wonderful gift was ruined by this thoughtless addition.
Peace From Within.......2005-10-19
Marianne Williamson is a gentle soul who cares deeply about people and the world. She has shared with us some of her deepest convictions through her soulful words. She has a way with words that draws you in and she very simply shares her messages of peace and love. She has reminded us of how prayer is about being grateful and asking for help and about how it helps everyone. At some of the most trying times in my life, this book, Marianne Williamson's words, have been my saving grace. I have recommended this book to many friends and family and have purchased several to give away as gifts over the past few years.

Product Lifecycle Management with SAP: The Complete Guide to mySAP PLM Strategy, Technology and Best Practices

Book Description
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is the newest wave in productivity. This revolutionary approach is an outcome of lean thinking; however, PLM eliminates waste and efficiency across all aspects of a product's life--from design to deployment--not just in its manufacture. By using people, product information, processes, and technology to reduce wasted time, energy, and material across an organization and into the supply chain, PLM drives the next generation of lean thinking.
Now PLM pioneer Michael Grieves offers everyone from Six Sigma and lean practitioners to supply chain managers, product developers, and consultants a proven framework for adopting this information-driven approach. Product Lifecycle Management shows you how to greatly enhance your firm's productivity by integrating the efforts of your entire organization.
Most companies are seeing the returns of their efforts in lean methods diminishing, as the most fruitful applications have already been addressed. Here, Grieves reveals how PLM gives you an opportunity to make improvements both within and across functional areas in order to increase agility, optimize efficiency, and reduce costs across the board. He gives you the most comprehensive view of PLM available, fully outlining its characteristics, method, and tools and helping you assess your organizational readiness.
There's also proven examples from the field, where PLM is being widely adopted by leading companies, including General Motors, General Electric, and Dell, that are widely adopting the approach. You'll see how PLM has saved these companies billions in unnecessary costs and shaved as much as 60% off cycle times. With this book you'll learn how to:
- Develop and implement your PLM strategy to support your corporate objectives
- Engage all your employees in using information to eliminate waste
- Enable improved information flow
- Better organize and utilize your intellectual capital
- Foster an environment that drives PLM
Lean manufacturing can only take your organization so far. To bring your productivity to the next level and save remarkable amounts of time, money, and resources, Product Lifecycle Management is your one-stop, hands-on guide to implementing this powerful methodology.
Customer Reviews:
Clearly the next step for collaborative management.......2006-07-14
I think that Dr. Grieves book presents a compelling next step in how companies AND their outsourced suppliers can collaborate over the entire lifetime of the customer relationship to insure that customers continue to get satisfaction from their products.
Think about it this way: If you are buying a car that you are going to own for 5 years, don't you want to make sure that 4 years in to that ownership experience, the company that makes the fuel injection system has told the dealer about its new, updated software system for improving mileage . . . so you can get the benefit from it?
Without a unified approach to sharing information across functions and across time, there is no way the car company, the outsourced supplier and the dealer could make that happen. That is the essential breakthrough of PLM thinking, and Dr. Grieves does a great job of explaining it.
There is a lot of value here for companies in any industry that is characterized by a global, interconnected supply chain and a rapidly changing product lifecycle.

The Primer on PLM.......2006-02-22
Grieves book on PLM is a fundamental primer on a subject basic to anyone involved devloping, marketing, buying and using a product. In other words, if your in business you should read this book. Importantly, his overview is comprehensive and provides a complete framework for understanding the scope and complexity of the practice in the modern manufacturing environment. The message is clear, you can't buy Product Lifecycle Management, you have to do Product Life Cycle Management. Whether your just beginning to look at PLM or are re-configuring your current capabilities, I would recomend everyone involved give this book a thorough read. I know my team will.

Customer Reviews:
More than a little angry.......2007-02-17
Like the other review says, this isn't the actual textbook. This definitely needs to be given a better title that lets buyers know what they're getting. If you are looking to buy this in addition to the textbook, don't bother. Its just a vocab list with some blank pages for notes.
A Little Angry.......2007-02-15
I was a little angry when i received this book. I thought i was purchasing the psychology of women textbook, and i thought it was so cheap because it was used. But, it turned out i had bought a cram 101 book about that textbook. Somebody should label these things better because it was a waste of my money.

Book Description
Generation to Generation presents one of the first comprehensive overviews of family business as a specific organizational form. Focusing on the inevitable maturing of families and their firms over time, the authors reveal the dynamics and challenges family businesses face as they move through their life cycles. The book asks questions, such as: What is the difference between an entrepreneurial start-up and a family business, and how does one become the other? How does the meaning of the business to the family change as adults and children age? How do families move through generational changes in leadership, from anticipation to transfer, and then separation and retirement? This book is divided into three sections that present a multidimensional model of a family business. The authors use the model to explore the various stages in the family business life span and extract generalizable lessons about how family businesses should be organized.
Customer Reviews:
Great framework for family business.......2007-10-01
This book provides a great framework on family business. Started my career in a family business, I have my share of understanding on family business. Typically, there some mixed up on personal emotion and professionalism. By using the framework discussed in the book helps folks in family business to focus more on business, less on personal emotion.
A 'must-read' for the whole family !!.......2003-11-23
"Generation to Generation", published by Harvard Business School Press, is an attempt to model how family businesses work in essence. The authors' research include interesting vignettes and 'lessons-learned' from a variety of families; how they achieved their goals, how they resolved conflicts between family members etc. Since the topic of family business in academics is fairly new, this book can be considered as one of the best in its field.
Important topics (such as succession, development stages and inter & intragenerational issues) are covered in detail to enlighten the reader. Contrasting viewpoints are also included to make the reader think for his or herself.
In general, the book is fairly easy to read since it explains the modeling theory with examples from numerous enterprises.
I strongly recommend it all who are destined to work in the complex system called family business.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-04-02
Most businesses in the world today are owned by families, but only a small percentage of these companies will survive and grow into major corporations. The unique challenges posed by family ownership can undermine even the best-performing small business, as issues of control and succession permeate the generations. In Generation to Generation, the authors apply the simple premise that managing a family-owned business to a large extent means managing the family itself. To that end, they provide a rich compendium of research and strategic suggestions for those charged with making a family business work, including the consultants who guide them. We from getAbstract highly recommend this book for these applicable measures and methods, which will help the performance of both business and family.
A perfect blend of theory and practice!.......1999-09-17
The authors effectively present a theoretical, as well as practical model of family business dynamics, incorporating the complexities of development over time. This book is a must-read to gain a deep understanding of families in business from the key perspectives of familiy, business, and ownership. Their use of case examples effectively illustrate the practical application and relevance of theory. To sum it up, it's steak AND sizzle!
An excellent book for anyone interested in family businesses.......1999-08-14
I think this is one of the best books available on family businesses! I found it insightful and informative. I think anyone interested in the subject should read this book. I strongly disagree with the review that describes this book as "too theoretical." I found it immensly practical.
