Book Description
The Mature Mind delivers good news for those in the second half of life, with an extraordinary account of cutting-edge neuroscience, groundbreaking psychology, fascinating vignettes from history and case studies, and practical advice for personal growth strategies. Gene Cohen, a renowned psychiatrist and gerontologist, draws from more than thirty years of research to show that surprising positive changes in our brains have the powerful potential to enhance, not diminish, our lives after fifty.
Book Description
For thousands of years men and women have risked their lives and spent their fortunes in a futile quest for eternal youth. In this groundbreaking book, world-renowned psychiatrist and researcher Gene D. Cohen takes us to the wellspring of genuine human vitality, the unique creative power generated by age and experience, and shows us how to tap this inner source to enrich, even transform our lives through middle age and beyond. A pioneering physician and respected international authority on aging and creativity, Dr. Cohen weaves history, scientific research, inspiring true-life stories, and his own fresh insights to journey into the previously uncharted territory of human potential in the "second half" of life. The Creative Age.
The over-thirty crowd was once subject to ridicule by younger people, and anyone past age fifty was definitely "over the hill." But in a single generation, the view of life after fifty has changed dramatically. Today society is shaped by unprecedented growth in the number of people over fifty, shifting patterns of opportunity and responsibility at work and at home, and advances in healthcare that offer the promise of longer and more active lives. In this fascinating, life-affirming book, Dr. Cohen debunks harmful myths about aging and illuminates the biological and emotional foundations of creative thought and expression. He offers compelling evidence that the unique combination of age, experience, and creativity can produce exciting inner growth and infinite potential for anyone.

Yes, creativity is important.......2007-04-16
The author emphasizes creativity as an important part of growing old but does a poor job of guiding the reader in terms of what they might do to awaken "human potential in the second half of life." I expected a less vague, more concrete set of guidelines rather than an anectodal review of the author's previous patient loads. Psychotherapy can help everyone (duh!) but the author takes that premise and builds a book that purports to target the special problems of the aged. It isn't really that selective and could apply to nearly everyone. The author's experiences are somewhat enlightening but become excessively autobiographical by the end of the book.
One of the best on the subject of aging well...........2006-03-21
Was perplexed by a negative review of this book, so I wanted to find out, firsthand what the author really said and I am so glad I did. Nowhere does the author chastises older people who try to take care of their health. Just the opposite.
Not only does the author have fifty year old plus folks on the cover, kayaking, swimming, painting etc but on page 188 he writes of 'More on the Effects of Creativity on Health' . Heck the whole book is about embracing the second half of life and taking personal responsibility for making needed changes so that you live to one hundred and do so eating healthy, interacting with others, becoming involved in ones community etc etc etc.
On page 10-11 , the author notes that studies of aging people and in my work with them, four aspects of creativity stand out:
1) Creativity strengthens our morale in later life 2) Creativity contributes to physical health as we age 3) Creativity enriches relationships 4) Creativity is our greatest legacy. That 'Increasing numbers of preliminary findings from psychoneuroimmunological studies-research that examines the interaction of our emotions, our brain function, and our immune system-suggest that a positive out look and a sense of well being have a beneficial effect on the functioning of our immune system and our overall health' These findings are particularly strong among older persons.'
The many examples of famous and everyday folk who have been or become creative after age fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty are empowering. In Chapter 9 titled Creativity us Everyday Life: Letting It Start with You,' the author gives some excellent examples of how as the quote he gives from Lao Tsu notes 'The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step'., and how we do have the choice to think outside the box, and live life to the fullest. And that we need to make the effort to get involved in a variety of activities that will stimulate the mind from different directions. Be it painting, reading more, walking more, volunteering more. Anything that will stimulate the brain which in turn will stimulate the rest of the body.
I am so impressed with the book I am buying a copy for a physician friend as well as the library over at hospice, where our widow/widowers group meets.
The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life.......2006-03-20
This "easy-read" book offers both professional and lay people alike a very refreshing and encouraging perspective on maturity. When coupled with a gentle sense of spirituality and wisdom which comes from life experience, it should help the reader to establish and reinforce a sense of purpose and resilience that engenders hope and creativity unimagined by most youth. This book is to become a part of my professional counseling practice for senior patients to read and discuss as they search for a deeper meaning and ultimate purpose in their lives. In a sense, I anticipate it will help to set the stage for welcoming passions of an existential nature, heretofore unknown in many individual's lives.
A gift to midlifers!.......2005-05-25
If ever there was any question about our ability to make meaningful contributions at midlife, this book will dispell all doubt! I found the continual notes (on the outer edges of the pages) encouraging, as they documented the multiple contributions made by individuals of "advanced" years. This is absolutely exciting, and gives me hope for the future!
A book that perpetuates aging stereotypes.......2000-08-24
The book perpetuates harmful stereotypes about aging. Cohen chastises older people who try to take care of their health. He claims that they are searching in vain for a "magic bullet" to regain their youth. Cohen then advocates a false mind/body dualism. Through this dualism, one gives up taking care of their body in order to follow their creativity. I honor the author's belief in the importance of creativity; however, I believe that the approach presented is self-defeating.
Book Description
Ageless Quest is a personal, sometimes controversial, account of the pursuit of a genetic "cure" for aging by an expert in the field.
The author is the Novartis Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Aging has always been regarded as a highly complex process with many degenerative changes leading to the cessation of life. But recent research has identified a relatively simple mechanism that governs the pace of aging.
Lenny Guarente's Ageless Quest is a scientific detective story for the baby boom generation. It offers an insider's view of an area of potentially astonishing high reward-and equally high risk.

I picked up this book because of the cover. If you care about the scientific story, read it in the review literature. If you want a good read, look elsewhere.
Great behind the scenes view of scientific research.......2002-12-06
As a non-scientist with an interest on what the future may hold for us, I found Ageless Quest to be exceptionally informative, easy to understand, and thought provoking. I had always wondered what went on in those biology research labs, and was grateful to have the "behind the scenes" peek that this book provided. Extremely interesting and enjoyable reading; recommended for all.

Combining a thorough explanation of nutritional supplements with healthy food recommendations, Feed Your Genes Right is a straightforward guide to healing modern illnesses--sometimes even before they strike. Author Jack Challem (Syndrome X) does a fine job with presenting complex health information in simple terms, and the mix of research, individual stories and personal touches result in a book as informative as most textbooks while being far more readable.
Supplements are accessible in two separate ways (in addition to an excellent index): by the supplement name, and by disease. One section explains each supplement in fine detail, including how they are available and what conditions particularly benefit from them; a later section lists medical conditions alphabetically--including everything from sickle cell anemia to wrinkles to cancer--and suggests dietary and supplemental recommendations, including specific reference to the research that makes the recommendation.
Many of the diet-related advice will sound familiar: there is nothing too earth-shattering about eating nutritionally-dense foods along plenty of water, fruit and vegetables, and getting a good mix of lean proteins and healthy fats. Challem makes a clear case for eating organically when possible, and also avoiding trans fats, referencing a number of studies that zoom in on specific nutrient loss or potential cancer-causing agents. A short recipe section provides new inspiration for following these guidelines, with interesting options like roasted carrots and black rice pudding with coconut milk.
While probably of more use to those looking to prevent chronic health issues rather than to cure acute illness, the book offers fine assistance to anyone investigating the use of supplements past the addition of a one-a-day tablet. --Jill Lightner

Highly recommended reading for anyone 9 to 99!.......2000-07-03
Gene Perret is an experienced comedy writer who brings his talents to bear in Growing Older Is So Much Fun Everybody's Doing It. This compendium of wholesome, short humor puts a positive spin on the stereotyped foibles of older folks. Here's just a sampling of Perret's wit and wisdom: If my kids wanted me to grow old gracefully, they should have behaved better when they were young; Youth is not only wasted on the young, it's also tiring on their grandparents; I know I get on your nerves once in a while. At my age, that's a form of recreation; Every story I tell my grandchildren is either true or would have been true if it had actually happened; If older people are supposed to be forgetful, how come there are so many conventions with younger people wearing name tags?; The perfect age is when you can wear your most comfortable shoes with any outfit; When I was young I was unpleasant. Now that I'm older, I'm "feisty". Growing Older Is So Much Fun Everybody's Doing It is highly recommended reading for anyone from 9 to 99!

Book Description
: Some elders age gracefully, with barely any signs of diminished capacity. Others manifest severe infirmities, and adult children or others may have to step in and care for them in their twilight years. For someone in this position, The Caregiver's Manual will be a companion on one of life's most difficult but potentially rewarding journeys. In 1900, only four percent of the American population was sixty-five or older. By 2000, this number had more than tripled, and it is expected to nearly double again over the next fifty years. It is estimated that by the year 2050, more than one person out of five will be in the senior category.

One of the most important books of this age.......2007-07-12
This book is one of the most enlightening books I have ever read. It holds true to the words "The truth shall set you free." I had the opportunity to speak to Mr. Davis years ago and it is evident that he was being guided by the highest Source when he wrote this book. He said he received the information through contemplation. My husband was so inspired by the book he entered the whole thing into his computer in case there ever would be a time the book was no longer available. This book will truly help anyone free themselves of the programming that we all have been subjected to for centuries.
Gene Davis was a visionary.......2002-09-18
I have read this book many times over the past decade
and I can honestly say that I have learned a great deal
thanks to Gene. He taught me how to contemplate
the truth accessing "Self Knowledge". This helped free
me from the dominant paradigm, or should I say "the Matrix"?
This book also has a companion booklet called
"The Power of Self Knowledge", which helps greatly
anyone accessing this type of information for the first time.
Also, his last book "Where we are on the Cosmic Clock"
is even more important, because the working nature of the Universe is revealed in great detail. His warnings regarding mind control and the agenda on the "New Improved" World Order
which baby Bush is attempting to implement was outlined
ten years ago by Gene.
Stragely enough, Gene's writings are similar to Harold Waldwin Percival who wrote "Thinking and Destiny" back in the 1940's. Percival's is a more detailed account than the one Gene put forward and more difficult to understand, but well worth reading for those willing to go the distance.
I had the chance to meet with Gene on a few occasions and I asked him if he knew of Mr. Percival and his writiings. He
told me he had never heard of him. They use a lot of the same concepts and terminology, which I have never seen in other books. I highly recommend "Thinking and Destiny" as a follow up to Gene's work once the reader has assimilated these new ideas.
The best source of useful information I have read in my life.......1998-01-24
Gene Davis has a unique slant on how things really work. 'Reversing the Aging Process' is a treasure of "how-to" and "how come" that applies to every living being on this Earth. You can read all the New Age books in the world and NONE of them have the content of this golden piece of text. Jim Worby, PhD/c, angels@fifthrealm.com, Dublin, Ohio
