Book Description

California was thrown into a paralysis of fear in 1969, distraught over the unsolved murders of the Zodiac killer. The Zodiac became the most elusive and frustrating adversary ever encountered by the law enforcement community in the San Francisco Bay Area. A series of letters, allegedly written by the murderer himself and published in local newspapers, only added to the mystery and panic. Over 30 years after he exploded onto the headlines of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Zodiac serial killer remains an enigma that is unparalleled in the history of crime in America, and the case remains unsolved. Violence expert Michael Kelleher and psychologist David Van Nuys attempt to provide a glimpse into the mind of this mysterious murderer. Kelleher and Van Nuys reconstruct the crime scenes, delve into the records, and psychoanalyze the Zodiac's letters to newspapers and the law enforcement agencies. The facts of the case and the fragmentary glimpses of the Zodiac's psychodynamics that came through his letters forced the authors, reluctantly, to draw a conclusion that is sure to be controversial-namely, that the Zodiac suffered from multiple personality disorder. They also debunk many popular legends and myths about the case, laying out the limited facts that we do have on the notorious Zodiac.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book about the Zodiac Killer .......2007-10-09

Flowing prose and a penchant for sticking to the established facts make this book a must for anyone interested in the Zodiac. DEFINATELY read it if you think that the recent film ("Zodiac") is some type of definitive presentation of the what really happened in this truly remarkable case.

5 out of 5 stars "This is the Zodiac speaking".......2004-01-29

Michael Kellehers book on the Zodiac killer is well worth the time and effort and money to obtain and read!
Having researched the Zodiac case since 1987(zodiacmurders.com) I would say his book is a crisp tight narrative that fully lays out the case with exactness as he makes the story interesting while giving the reader a multi-faceted view into all aspects of the killers mind and criminal activities.
Many have related they just 'couldn't put it down' until they read the entire book!
One correction I would like to make- while STILL focusing on this fine work-is that it says Bill Nelson wrote a book on the possible connection of the Zodiac to Charles Manson and some of his associate/s.Only a small portion of the book presents this link. The majority of the content in Nelsons (now out of print) book, is about the Manson Family. It is my book ,The Zodiac Manson Connection, that has, as its MAIN theme,a possible link to the Manson Family.
Get Kellehers book is all I can say-a must for the true crime buff and members of law enforcement!

Look no further, this is the Zodiac book that is worth your investment of money and time. Simply excellent, both factually and as entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars the zodiac speaks!.......2003-04-14

This is in my opinion slightly better than Robert Graysmith's Zodiac but it does get bogged down with the information of the analysis of the letters. However, this book discounts a few theories about the Zodiac. It denies that Zodiac was a brilliant killer. It denies that Zodiac intentionally created a Z around the city when he did his crimes, the author stating it was more a connect-the-dots connection that was weak by any stretch of the imagination.Another popular theory was that Zodiac only killed near water. This book discounts that theory too, saying that San Francisco is surrounded by water on three sides.Yet another speculation was that Zodiac was brilliant in eluding the authorities when there was evidence to the contrary. Two policemen stopped him after he killed Paul Stine, a taxi driver, and if it wasn't for a wrong description about the killer (the description was of a black man) Zodiac would have been apprehended. There is more speculation about that too, that Zodiac would not have been so easily arrested; he would have put up a fight.
I also think that the suspect in Graysmith's Zodiac Unmasked was not Zodiac because he was cleared through finger-printing. Zodiac had sloppily left two partial finger-prints on a taxi after he killed Paul Stine.
This book does more of a psychological profile than Zodiac and much of it made sense, I think the author got it right about the Zodiac.
The author, Kelleher, and David Van Nuys, Chair of the Psychology Department in a Northern Californian University, differ occasionally in their opinions about the Zodiac, but mostly agree.
Van Nuys claims that Zodiac had a multiple personality disorder, brought on from a childhood trauma. Van Nuys claims that possibly he was sexually abused and had a dominant father. He states that the normal well -adjusted personality didn't know what the Zodiac personality was doing and vice versa.
The book goes on to say that Zodiac, if he still was alive,he would be looking back on his crimes now and may have been horrified by them. Van Nuys claims that possibly the good personality might have won over the Zodiac personlity. Or possibly Zodiac had committed suicide or was dead as a result of age...if he was alive he would probably be in his mid sixties.
This book doesn't really come up with any good suspects although that has been done before with other books and failed to yield results. The suspects in Graysmith's book Zodiac, I believe were not Zodiac so this subsequent book doesn't go into suspects...I think it adds to the mystery.
****&a half.

4 out of 5 stars Jack Redux.......2002-12-21

I'm still reading this, and enjoying it, but was struck by its divergence from previous theories. The other recent work on Zodiac devotes several hundred pages to a suspect which that author names as the Zodiac killer. This book mentions his name once, in a one sentence dismissal. It's getting to be like Jack the Ripper, where a new theory emerges every few years (Maybe this will be next on Patricia Cornwell's list). I don't have a favorite suspect or theory to defend, but I enjoy an articulate examination of a compelling mystery. This is one.

Book Description

Even though statisticians report that more than 37 million Americans suffer from diagnosable social phobia, common sense suggests that nearly all of us have, at one time or another, had clammy palms and knocking knees because of an intimidating, uncomfortable social situation. The party where you don't know a single soul, the crowded lobby of a movie theatre, the presentation you've been dreading for weeks—any of these have the potential to ruin your week without necessarily sending you to the psychiatrist's couch. The ten simple exercises in this book help readers shed their shyness and start socializing with confidence and élan. The book examines shyness by symptoms: physical discomfort, anxious thoughts, and bothersome behaviors. Solutions—based in clinically proven cognitive behavioral therapy—follow, directly addressing all three. Readers can carry the book in a briefcase or purse for last minute support and extra confidence. Once the ten simple solutions are learned, they will be constant companions, providing courage, poise, and composure when readers need them most.

4 out of 5 stars Re the book on shyness and the one on "Clear Speech".......2005-08-28

I found the condition of both books excellent. The second was particularly relevant to what I was doing, although I did get some ideas from the first.

I needed the books urgently and they were out of print in Australia, so I cheerfully bore the cost of the exchange rate and shipping. The books arived in good time.

3 out of 5 stars Simple, But Unoriginal.......2005-05-02

I found this book and thought it would be the perfect reader to help me out without needing to wade through lots of information. I was wrong. Covering things such as cognitive distortions and medication, this book didn't tell me how to overcome shyness. If you're looking for some help in those agonizing social situations, I wouldn't let the simplistic appearance of this book fool you. True, it offers some very helpful information, but not anything you can't read elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerfully Simple Approach to Shyness.......2004-10-19

I've suffered from social anxiety for years, and have found many ways to avoid it.

My therapist recommended this book, and I have found it to be insightful, direct, and immediately helpful.

As with most books that deal with social anxiety, your progress towards alleviating that anxiety is really dependent upon the work that you are willing to do to complete the exercises that are outlined in the book.

I'm just getting started myself, but already I have a more hopeful outlook on being able to just be myself and accept what happens as I put myself "out there" in engaging in social situations.

I hope you find this book just as motivational.

Book Description

HERE AT LAST is a CD to help you with your public speaking and performing challenges!

In The SpotLight: Guided Exercises to Create a Calm and Confident State of Mind, Body, & Spirit While Speaking or Performing

Janet Esposito, M.S.W., author of In The SpotLight: Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking and Performing, has teamed up with colleague Diane Bahr-Groth,C.Hy., who is a Certified Hypnotherapist, to create a powerful CD that helps you to face any public speaking or performing challenge with greater relaxation, confidence, and ease!

Janet will lead you through a series of exercises, including a guided relaxation and healing meditation exercise; an exercise to help you desensitize to the feelings and sensations of fear; a positive visualization and self-affirmation exercise; and a coaching segment. All of these exercises will help you to create a relaxed, confident, and empowered state of mind, body, and spirit as you think about and approach any speaking or performing challenge.

Diane will lead you through a self-hypnosis session designed specifically to help your unconscious mind create a new pattern of responding to these challenges. This will help you to let go of any negatively conditioned responses to speaking or performing and to create a new, more positive and resourceful attitude and feeling about speaking and performing on a deeper level.

We know how valuable it is to be guided, supported, and inspired to create more resourceful states of mind, body, and spirit when you are feeling alone and afraid in facing this challenge. These exercises will help you to create feelings of deep relaxation and inner peace; a positive, confident state of mind; and a belief and trust in yourself and your ability to take on whatever speaking or performing challenges you face!

5 out of 5 stars Great pep talk..........2006-05-14

This CD is very well thought out and put together by someone who knows exactly what people that are reticent about performing or public speaking need to hear. The pep talk is great at helping you put things into perspective, great work Janet. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2004-08-06

I have attended all three levels of Janet's workshops and read her book. My involvement with her approach has helped me resolve many issues around performing. At every workshop attendees would beg her to put out a CD so we could "take her home" with us. This CD more than fills the bill, for it moves you directly into a calm, focused mental state. It beautifully complements what I learned in the workshop and from her book, and I will continue to use it before performances. Janet has made a major contribution to the field of performance anxiety through her strong committment to helping people overcome this issue, and she knows firsthand how debilitating it can be. Thank you, Janet.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!.......2004-08-03

Public speaking had always been a horrific experience for me. Yet as a forensic expert I have to frequently teach classes related to my work as well as speaking at various church functions. These experiences were so dreadful to me that they were actually taking a toll on my physical health. What I like about this CD is that Janet is very truthful and doesn't offer a magic bullet, but she does show you how to gain control over your reactions to these situations. It is amazingly simple to implement the techniques presented in this CD and they do work. Still I suspect that most of us who have suffered from this problem never really knew how to access the power within ourselves to overcome our reactions to these situations. I can't speak for anyone else, but as for me, I would have paid ten times the price for this CD and considered it a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-08-03

I thought that Janet's CD was extremely effective, and I used it before presentations. It helped me tremendously and encouraged me to focus on positive thoughts rather than those that were self-defeating. I would highly recommend it for those with public speaking anxiety, and even those people who only get slightly anxious before presentations. Loved it!

1 out of 5 stars Way too "new age" for me.......2004-08-01

I bought this CD hoping it would help me improve my confidence with public speaking, but I was very disappointed. It has an extremely heavy "new age" and hypnotic feel and sound that I found very irritating. I turned it off after about 15 minutes, and I never plan to turn it on again. It will be headed to Goodwill with the next load.

I recommend "The Quick & Easy Way to Effective Speaking" by Dale Carnegie. It is a classic that has never been surpassed. It provides extensive help and practical guidance that has been very valuable to me both in terms of technique and confidence. Dale Carnegie was THE expert on public speaking; his books and courses have helped millions of people overcome their fears and become effective speakers. His books have a positive "you can do it" attitude that I like.

5 out of 5 stars Set Your Storytelling Free!.......2007-06-03

Perhaps you feel a bit...inhibited when it comes to telling stories to your children. Reading out loud, okay, that's doable. But actually making up a story? From scratch? Or putting into words family memories and memorable events on the spot? And saying them out loud? Perhaps this sounds a bit scary! I know that for myself, the written word seemed much less intimidating than the spoken word, and for some reason my wee daughters seemed like harsh critics.

This book will set your storytelling spirit free - even if you don't know you have one! My confidence was lifted by the encouraging tone of the author and the helpful strategies, techniques and tools that she presents. And once the stories start coming, they won't stop, they will flood out of you once you open the gates. Your children will thank you for the gift of stories in your own words, and will ask for them, again and again.

There is nothing to fear, storytelling with children is a delight! A Must for any parent who seeks to enrich and deepen communications with the wee ones in their life.

5 out of 5 stars Dying Forests: A Crisis In Consciousness.......2005-08-19

Dying Forests: A Crisis In Consciousness, is a beautiful book. Jochen Bockemuhl's color paintings of many different forest settings and landscapes, illustrate his many ideas throughout the book.
The ideas set out in this book transcend the Cartesian/scientific materialist point of view, by discussing how to arrest the disappearance of the earth's forests using Rudolph Steiner's anthroposophy within which Goethe's insights are interpreted and elaborated.
Bockemuhl's ideas are clearly laid out, and for those interested in studying his ideas in more depth, there is a small reading list at the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Storytelling with Children.......2004-06-22

This is an excellent introduction to the subject. It is simple and accessible and I would go so far as to say that it is inspired! It is a pleasure to read and will be a tremendous support to parents wanting to enrich their children's lives through story-telling. I was enriched by reading this book, and received many new and helpful ideas. Although not a "how-to" book, it is full of useful ideas that will get a novice started and sustain them in their efforts. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars party pooper in Brooklyn.......2004-01-10

I am sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but I did not like this book at all. I am interested in becoming a better weaver of stories for my young children. Instead of a how-to guide, I found a wispy, dreamy meditation on stories. It offered some suggestions for setting the mood and beginning the story, but then, when I really need help, on the development of a story, story-arc, what to do when you get stuck, etc -- nothing at all! Also, the art of storytelling can be taught without deprecating comments about the "coldness" of books. A real turnoff! I skimmed through the second half of the book and promptly deposited it in a give-away pile. I would send it back to amazon but the binding is broken.

5 out of 5 stars Invitation to Inspiration.......2003-07-07

Storytelling with Children is an inspiration - with a very practical outlook. As a teacher, therapist and workshop leader, Nancy Mellon shows you how to pull stories from your own experience or a child's, using small anecdotes, memories or observations. She helps you overcome fear and doubt, and discover the wellsprings of your creativity. With a lighthearted touch yet a deep respect for children and the adults who love them, she acts as a guide to one of the oldest and greatest acts of communication and sharing - that of spinning a tale out of shared experience or sometimes (it can seem) out of nowhere.

Parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone with a child in his/her life will discover how to make up stories for birthdays, and for important events such as birth, death, or moving house. They'll learn how to incorporate a child's fears and difficulties - or simply the ups and downs of everyday life - into a story that will help to resolve them. For those who worry that their kids are spending too much time with the TV and computer, this is the perfect antidote. For those who love reading aloud to children, the magic of creative storytelling offers something even more nourishing. Adults who start off feeling tired or uncertain find themselves "enlivened and cared for" as much as the children do. They feel closer to their child and more in touch with themselves. For children, the gift of a story made especially for them, is priceless.

I think Josh Gordon's "Presentations That Change Minds" is a must-read for almost everyone, because each of us, whatever our job description or field, in business or personal life, has a need to `change minds'. Some of us every day if we're selling, the rest of us pretty regularly if we stop to think about it. Whether we're engineers or homemakers, employees or bosses, butchers or bakers or candlestick makers. Josh manages to lay out a platform for `selling' that is down-to-earth, packed with relevant examples to make his points. He deals with basics, which many of us find easy to forget, while coming up with sparkling ideas to make our time with someone we'd like to sell both more productive and more satisfying - whether it's spouse or child, co-worker or boss, difficult prospect or grizzled news editor.."

4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction, especially for yoga and philosophy students.......2007-04-23

This tape and booklet is a simple guide to achieving acceptable pronunciation of transliterated Sanskrit terms. This is all it claims to be and it achieves this end well with minimal effort on the part of the reader.

The booklet is well-organized and it contains many useful terms that are likely to appear in the study of Indian philosophy and religion. While there are some minor problems with pronunication as pointed out by the other reviewer above, this is a great start for most people.

Also, Bruce Cameron Hall has very good credentials. He studied Sanskrit at the University of Hawaii and also with Pandit Ambika Datta Upadhyaya in Banaras, India. He also did further study with Daniel Ingalls and Masatoshi Nagatomi of Harvard University, where he received his doctorate in Sanskrit and Indian Studies. In other words, while his pronunication might not be perfect, I think it's pretty reliable despite an occasional error.

3 out of 5 stars elemental.......2006-07-08

The objective of this booklet with cassette is to provide the student with an elementary guide for the acceptable pronunciation of Sanskrit terms transliterated in Latin characters. As the author says: "...They should enable speakers of English to pronounce Sanskrit words so that they are recognizable to Indian Scholars..."
Consecuently, the reader will not find any phonetic introduction to the "devanagari" script. The aim looked for is merely that the student can pronounce Sanskrit words with some accuracy.. It is not tried to obtain a perfect intonation by one of the very few 50.000 hindus who still today affirm in official census to have Sanskrit as their first language. In fact, he who reads the selected words as an example is not a native professor, as you can notice when he commits some isolated slip in the emission of the "aspirated" consonants (bh, ph, gh, dh, etc.)
Briefly, this booklet with cassette will allow to pronounce Sanskrit words (if duly transliterated in Latin characters only), without feeling inhibited or ridiculous.

Book Description

Fifteen years ago, Tony Campolo's 20 Hot Potatoes That Christians Are Afraid to Touch pushed, pulled, and prodded Christians into serious consideration of controversial but critical issues related to the Christian life. Campolo challenged his more than 150,000 readers to re-think their convictions (and prejudices) and to do something about them!

Dubbed by Christianity Today as "the positive prophet" and "a ferocious critic of Christians left and right," Campolo lives up to his reputation in this latest book examining some of today's toughest questions and issues:

Speaking My Mind…Tony Campolo at his best.

2 out of 5 stars NOT An Update of 20 Hot Potatoes.......2007-05-09

I had used the book 20 Hot Potatoes Christians Are Afraid to Touch as a resource for teaching a Sunday School class years ago, and found it to be provocative, discussion starting, and yet grounded in the Biblical tradition of which Tony Campolo is a part (American Baptist). I thought this book might be an update of that book, and ordered it for use in teaching a class. I find it to be difficult for the participants in the class to understand. The chapters are longer than the earlier work, and the discussions are less thought-provoking.

For a reader interested in the sociology of religion or theology and its relation to current controversial topics, this is a good book. For the general reader, I'm not sure it's the best of its genre.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of Evangelical issues.......2007-05-08

`Speaking My Mind' by sociologist and writer on Christian Evangelical themes is a remarkably refreshing statement of social and theological positions from within what is traditionally known as American Christian Fundamentalism. For me, who see Fundamentalism from the perspective of `conventional' (I am Lutheran), churches this book is a revelation of the diversity of social, political, and theological positions in this large block of American Christians.

While I find the title a perfect reflection of the book's point of view, the subtitle is a Gordian knot of misstatements, and I am very happy that the author points out that it was provided by his publisher and not by his own pen. The most misleading suggestion in this subtitle is the notion that Mr. Campolo is a prophet. His area of expertise is as a sociologist, and he speaks with great authority from that speciality. He also demonstrates a sound knowledge of Bible study, which serves him well in criticizing some Fundamentalist social positions that use scripture to support their stand.

I have been avoiding the use of `Evangelical' up to now in speaking of the body of Christians to which Mr. Campolo claims allegiance. This is because my own Lutheran church, following the lead of Martin Luther, emphasize the teachings of the bible and eschewed layers of interpretation laid on it by the Roman Catholic church in the 1500 years leading up to the Reformation. In fact, `Evangelical' is part of the name of the Lutheran church in America and the Luther inspired church in Europe is simply the `Evangelical' church. In spite of our sharing this name with the `non-liturgical' churches such as the Baptists (Campolo's denomination), Lutherans and Campolo's `Evangelicals' tend to interpret scripture just a bit differently. I will go out on a limb here and say that Evangelical fundamentalists take scripture just a bit more literally and may give just a bit more weight to the Old Testament than Luther and Lutherans, whose center of gravity is usually Paul's Epistle to the Romans, which demonstrates how the Gospel of Christ replaces Old Testament covenants. But the theological difference between liturgical and non-liturgical denominations is not the subject of this book.

Campolo's subject in Part I is a sociological discussion of how Evangelical Fundamentalists have become so successful at the expense of the more conventional liturgical denominations, commonly grouped together in The American Council of Churches. The vanguard of this success is the Reverend Billy Graham, whose crusades pushed awareness of this reading of Christianity with success similar to the `Great Awakening' in colonial America. And, not only were fundamentalists successful in recruiting domestic members, they have had far greater success in spreading missionaries throughout the world.

In Part II Campolo speaks of issues in both social policy and in theology. On the first, Campolo is lucid, authoritative, and convincing. On the second, where he is the amateur Theologian and semi-professional Bible scholar, he is less convincing, however, his weaknesses here to my Lutheran eyes may be less with Campolo's own positions than in his loyalty to the literal authority of scripture, and his reliance on the writings of theologians representing his wing of Christianity.

This appraisal in no way diminishes the superb value of Campolo's book as a survey of issues arising from Evangelical Fundamentalism.

Campolo's treatment of Evangelical Fundamentalism's doctrines on the role of women and on homosexuality is lucid and heart-felt. This is especially true of his position with regard to homosexuality, where he even disagrees with his wife by being closer to the center of Fundamentalist doctrine, while still criticizing the patent unfairness of many Fundamentalist spokespeople on the issue. The interesting theological issue here may be the kind of legalistic analysis of scripture at which our Jewish friends are so good. While there are New Testament statements against homosexual practice, especially from St. Paul, Campolo makes excellent points that suggest Paul was not railing against what we know as safe, consensual sex with a person of the same sex, but specific practices which may have even been aberrant in Hellenistic society, which at the very least, tolerated homosexuality. Campolo still comes down against homosexual practice (but not homosexual inclinations). I may suggest that the scriptural command to love your neighbor and `do unto others as you would have them do unto you' trumps specific bans, even from the pen of such an important source as St. Paul. This `prime commandment' is the one from which all other rules flow.

One topic I find most interesting is Campolo's attempt to reconcile Christian doctrine with science. By citing several important authorities, he makes an attractive case; however, the effort is ultimately misdirected. Scientific and Theological doctrines are simply in two entirely different worlds of discourse, and hooking the believability of a Theological doctrine on a scientific theory (in Campolo's case, Einstein's theory of relativity) is cast adrift if science disproves the theory on the basis of improved observation, just as Michaelson and Morley disproved the existence of ether, clearing the way for Einstein's theory. The most compelling image here is Wittgenstein's metaphor of language as a toolbox, with tools for a wide variety of purposes, and (my extension here) science's ruler and calipers cannot do the same job of Theology's hammer and saw. The sooner Evangelical Fundamentalists move on beyond the red herring of creationism, the sooner they will have more energy to devote to more substantial issues.

I was especially interested in Campolo's dismissal of John Robinson's famous short book, `Honest to God', which rested on theology from Dietrich Bonhoffer and addressed the `Is God Dead' issue so popular in the 1960s. This book awoke my interest in Christian thinking, especially as it was consistent with the compelling views of existentialist theologian, Soren Kierkegaard.

As a laundry list of `tough issues', this book is superb, and I have not touched on all of them. I only wish Campolo had given us a bibliography of all his sources.

4 out of 5 stars Words From a Wise Man.......2007-03-19

In this book Dr. Tony Campolo presents his thoughts and opinions on some of the issues of today: the war in Iraq, Islam, homosexual marriage, sexism, racism, etc... In the pages of this book, his thoughts are clearly presented.

Tony Campolo is a great preacher. In 45 minutes he can present God's message crystal clear stripped of all politics and other outside influences. If you're on an life issue, listening to him preach will clear it up. Is it ok for a Christian to drive a BMW? What should I do with my life? Is God a compassionate loving God of the New Testament or a righteous discilinary God of the Old Testament? Listen to Tony preach, and formerly unclear, muddy issues are clear.

He has 71 years of life experience most as a Christian. He has been a pastor, a professor, a manager, a father, and a missionary. Sitting at his feet and listening to what he says is well worth the time.

He makes some very telling observations. With respect to homosexuality, he notes that many who fight against homosexual marriages don't object to divorce and remarriage even though Jesus said that is adultery. With respect to Iraq, he pondered what would have been the result if we as a Christian nation followed the Biblical principle of loving (and feeding) thy enemy rather than over a decade of economic sanctions and no fly zones.

There are some very interesting original comments in this book. THIS IS NOT THE SAME OLD SAME OLD!

At the same time I must say that he is NOT a theologian. With respect to wives submitting to their husbands, he uses Ephesians 5:21-25. 5:22 says "Wives submit yourselves to your husbands" but 5:21 says "submit yourselves one to another". Tony claims that 5:21 Paul is speaking specifically to married couples and therefore he interprets the passage not as wives submit to your husbands but as submit yourselves one to another. He neglects to point out that Colossians 3:18 and 1 Peter 3, the same wives submit to your husbands command is given WITHOUT the "submit yourselves one to another" qualifier. He also neglects to point out 1 Cor. 11 that says that the head of the woman is man. Did Tony ignore this? Or was he ignorant of it? Either way is concerning. It is one thing to interpret the Bible in light of the culture at the time and conclude that maybe the literal application is not right for today's society. It is another thing to intentionally twist scripture so that it fits what you want to believe.

In the subject of whether there is a second chance for those who die without Christ, Tony is also kind of fast and loose with scripture.

But nevertheless, he has a lot to say, and a lot of what he says is very meaningful and well worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Three Quarters of a Loaf Is Better Than None.......2007-03-06

Tony Campolo seems to relish his position as a gadfly in the evangelical Christian movement, being the born-again Christian who is mostly orthodox, but flirts a bit with liberalism. Whether this is sincere or a ploy to help sell his books (or maybe both), he is always worth reading, if only because he does raise some questions that need raising. Thus, as in many of his previous books, much of what is here is good, thoughtful, substantial stuff, while some of it makes the reader think that Campolo is doing a shout-out to the liberal friends he's made over the years. For every two or three paragraphs that made me say "Good point, man!" there was another that led to eye-rolling and "Oh, please..."

Some specifics: Chapter 7, Are Evangelicals Afraid of Science? is superb, a case of a well-read man with a decent understanding of science making the valid point that what we know of physics today ought to make religion and science see each other as partners, not enemies. Without making the reader's eyes glaze over, Campolo explains some basic Einsteinian theories and applies them to questions like "Does a Christian go immediately to heaven after death, or wait for the Second Coming?" Chapter 6 deals rather sensitively with that age-old question, "How can a loving God allow people to burn in hell?" Campolo points out--correctly, I think--that evangelicals often pay lip service to hell but question it privately. So does he, but I won't spoil it for you by telling his final position on that belief.

He goes astray in Chapter 9, where he asks "Is Islam an evil religion?" He acknowledges that Islamic radicals are a real threat today (well, duh) but goes back to the Koran and makes the point that Islam really is a religion of peace, as George W. famously said. This requires him to pretty much ignore more than a thousand years of intense violence, Muslim vs Muslim, and Muslim vs Christian. I think he also goes astray in claiming that evangelicals are too militaristic. Campolo is a Christian pacifist, a position I can respect even if I don't agree with. Having moved for years in evangelical circles (including publishing houses and colleges), I just don't find that many evangelicals being pro-war. I also find very few that adhere to the dispensational theology that he claims is such a threat to world peace. In the later chapters of the book, he comes across sounding not like a Christian scolding fellow Christians, but a hardline secularist who is in a tizzy, fearing those Horrible Radical Christians will lead the world to destruction. Funny, but I just haven't met any Christians like that. Campolo seems to think Muslims are more peace-loving than evangelicals--a truly doubtful proposition. He also contradicts himself in places: saying that evangelicals have become more "worldly" in the good sense of caring for the poor, yet elsewhere in the book says they ignore the poor. So which is it?

He can seem naive at times. In one section he talks about how he is tired of the religious Right's handwringing over the decline of sexual morals, and he cites "statistics" to prove that, quite the contrary, Americans are becoming more monogamous and faithful in their marriages. Oh, please. Has he not watched TV in the past ten years?

One disappointment: in this in-depth "warts and all" look at evangelicalism, he didn't address the serious issue of the many evangelicals who pay lip service to Christian ethics while going on their merry way. Hypocrisy is present in all religions, of course, but those of us who spend our working lives in the evangelical movement are painfully aware that the megachurches that preach conservative sexual morals and "family values" are home to lots of couples living together without marrying, engaging in gay relations, or just plain sleeping around.

All in all, there is more good here than bad. This is the kind of book you read to stimulate thought, not to find pat answers.

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!.......2006-10-25

This book is intelligent and honest. I appreciate his candor and his ability to communicate an idea with appropriate conviction. Sometimes bold and in your face, but softer when appropriate.

I agree with about 80% of his theology. I strongly disagree with his Universalist views regarding salvation, but he offers intelligent, respectable explainations for his beliefs.

We need more books like this to shake Evangelicals up a bit and remind us of who we serve, how we serve and why.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2007-01-12

Our daughter gave me this CD set for Christmas. I have been doing a lot of driving lately, and have been listening to the CDs exclusively when in the car.

It's odd that I waver back and forth between feeling incredibly uplifted by re-visiting ... through his own words and voice ... his faith, integrity, dignity, decency, character, intelligence, compassion and love of country. And yet, at the same time, I sometimes feel deeply depressed, occasionally to the point of tears, because we so desperately need someone of his caliber now, and yet the pool of 'leadership' from which we will choose the next leader of the free world is filled with pretenders whose credentials are on an entirely different, inferior plane.

The 'Reagan Legacy' can be seen in the absence of the Berlin wall; in the dissolution of the Soviet Union; in the feeling of dignity and pride that was pervasive in our republic during his tenure in office; in the might, capability, effectiveness, and freedom-preserving focus of the American military, which was the unflinching standard during his watch; in the unparalleled sense of economic well-being that permeated the 80's; in the resurrected life that was breathed into entrepreneurial enterprise as a result of his low-tax/hands-off economic policies; and, perhaps most importantly, in the love and esteem with which those of us who followed his leadership held him. He was an unparalleled American treasure.

We have so unappreciatively squandered his accomplishments and betrayed his example. I pray that we awaken to that folly before the light from the Reagan legacy becomes too dim to rekindle.

Listening to his own thoughts, spoken in his own voice, brings that fact home in a very powerful way.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREAT LIBERATOR SPEAKS.......2004-12-27

In the introduction, President Reagan expresses the wish that these speeches would give the listener insight into himself as a president and a person: who he was, where he came from and what he believed. The speeches are not about policies and do not include any state of the union addresses. Almost every speech is introduced by Reagan with his reflections on the times and the issues, with his customary wit and humour.

My only complaint about the CD-set is the absence of a booklet with a proper track listing. The speeches are listed on the 5 discs but in a tiny font size so that one needs a magnifying glass in order to read them.

The first speech, from October 1964, in support of Barry Goldwater's candidacy, is particularly stirring. The sound is a bit crackly here but that only adds to the magic of this momentous speech. All the others are from the White House years. Here are the most memorable ones:

1981
Swearing-in ceremony/Inaugural address/Address to the nation on the state of the economy. Reagan was the first president to use a prop on TV - in this case a coin to demonstrate the effect of inflation/Address on the air traffic controllers strike, quite a powerful one.

1982
Magnificent address to the UK parliament on the values of the West and our historic role in the defence of freedom/Inauguration of the USS New Jersey/The national prayer breakfast, on spiritual renewal/Christmas day radio address.

1983
On the struggle for democracy in Central America/On the massacre of the marines in Lebanon/The magnificent Evil Empire speech/Martin Luther King Day.

1984
Hoboken, New Jersey election speech, to enthusiastic audience.
Republican Convention Acceptance speech, also to enthusiastic audience/40th Anniversary of the Normandy invasion, a very stirring and uplifting one.

1985
On SDI (the Space Shield) to the political action conference.
On the upcoming Geneva summit meeting with Gorbachev.

1986
Memorial service for the Challenger dead/On the Reykjavik summit/Centennial ceremony for the Statue of Liberty/Tax reform act of 1986, a breakthrough for economic growth and prosperity/Washington dinner honouring Tipp O'Neill, showing how gracefully Reagan acted towards his political opponents.

1987
Momentous speech at Brandenburg gate in Berlin on June 12th, 1987: "Tear down this wall!"/Speech honouring the heroism of ordinary people.

1988
Veterans Day Ceremony: Reagan restored the dignity and honour of Vietnam vets/Republican National Convention tribute to Nancy Reagan for her campaign against drug abuse. The last address to White House correspondents' annual dinner/Campaign speech for George H Bush in San Diego.
Farewell speech on January 11th, 1989.

Upon his death in 2004, the most moving tribute to Ronald Reagan appeared on the Belmont Club Blog, in the form of an old poem by Thomas Macaulay:

" When the oldest cask is opened,
And the largest lamp is lit;
When the chestnuts glow in the embers,
And the kid turns on the spit;
When young and old in circle
Around the firebrands close;
When the girls are weaving baskets,
And the lads are shaping bows;
When the goodman mends his armour,
And trims his helmet's plume;
When the goodwife's shuttle merrily
Goes flashing through the loom;
With weeping and with laughter
Still is the story told,
How well Horatius kept the bridge
In the brave days of old."

5 out of 5 stars Reagan Freed the Slaves of Communist Tyrannies.......2004-09-25

Reading this in 1990 brought the 1980s into focus.

I will never forget the day after the Berlin Wall came down looking around at all the happy, relieved faces in the diner in downtown Chicago (and that town is a Democrat stronghold!).

And then the rapid, unexpected collapse of Soviet satellite slave states! It was not overnight but I later realized, REAGAN WAS RIGHT, AND I WAS WRONG IN THE 1980s!!!

Through the 1980s I was indifferent to Reagan. I would come home from work, watch the evening network news and believe everything the anchors and reporters suggest about Reagan. What I did not realize is that the dominant media wanted people like me to be hostile to Reagan. I never voted period.

I believed Reagan was a shallow actor who got lucky and just hung around rich Republicans.

The Robert Bork hearings were disturbing but I could not articulate why.

After watching the 1988 Republican convention, seeing that so many people appreciated America and Reagan and that conservatives were not the demons that I had believed, I decided for sure that I would not register as a Democrat, and slowly but surely steered away from liberalism.

The high-tech lynching of Clarence Thomas persuaded me further of the fanaticism of modern liberalism.

And that Democrats nominated Clinton, a McGovernite liberal posing as a centrist and trashing the "trickle-down economics" of Reagan. That was the last straw.

The New York Times had a smug, sneering piece about Rush Limbaugh in 1992. I finally later read and listened to Rush Limbaugh. I thought gradually, essentially RUSH IS RIGHT!

In 1992 I registered Republican for the first time and voted for George H. W. Bush. FREE FROM LIBERALISM AT LAST!!!

5 out of 5 stars One for the history books.......2003-08-02

What better way to remember the Reagan legacy than by listening to Reagan's best speeches.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering The Great Communicator.......2002-12-26

Reagan was a great President simply from the perspective of his innate leadership ability and masterful skill as an orator. This collection of speeches is quite compelling and an excellent reference for admirers of the honorable Ronald Reagan. I also recommend Reagan In His Own Hand, which is a little more focused on the pre-Presidential Reagan during his stint as a private citizen and Governor of California.

Book Description

Four million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in this country, yet most live in silent shadows, their stories untold. In Speaking Our Minds, seven diagnosed individuals of various ages and backgrounds express their thoughts and feelings about what it is like to have Alzheimer's disease, to live with it day to day, and to cope with its impact on their lives. Although afflicted with the same disease, each person's experience is unique. Told with honesty and insight, their stories cover personal history, diagnosis, family and social interactions, philosophical and religious perspectives, and the many neurological and pychological dimensions of the disease that permeate their lives. Transcribed from taped, in-home interviews, the seven narratives are interspersed with the author's own thoughts and observations about the different lives unfolding before her and of the disease whose common themes bind them all together. What emerges is a powerful and compassionate portrait of people forced to define themselves in new ways, not just by what has been lost, but also by what endures. A unique and illuminating exploration of the subjective experience of Alzheimer's disease, Speaking Our Minds offers hope and understanding to anyone whose life has been irrevocably touched by it.

5 out of 5 stars Anecdotes from the words of Diagnosed ALZ people.......2002-07-18

Being recently dianosed with CRS, see my review of Shenk's "The Forgetting," I want to know from others who have been there, what is ahead of me. I am a member of two ALZ support groups, one mixed, and one for ALZers by themselves. Recently at a social party where I was experiencing data overload, I confided to a woman of my own age, that I was diagnosed with ALZ. She immediately said she was also, and we immediately began comparing symptoms, just as other ALZers do when their caregivers are not around!
This book fullfills my needs for the stories from those who are there. No story fits me exactly, yet parts of each show me that I am not unique, that I need not fit the popular mold, e.g. "Iris," of where and who I am. Just as the 42 stories at the rear of "Alcoholics Anonymous" give understanding and light to those afflicted with another incurable pathology, so do these bring hope and understanding to me: "I Am Not Alone!"
There is an abundance of tomes dealing with the diagnosis and care of ALZers. Those few books which let one ALZ speak to another ALZ are far between. ["Living in the Labyrinth" by McGowan is another in this small select company.]
If you, a friend, or a relative has ever been given a tentative or conclusive diagnosis of ALZ, run, don't walk, to get a copy of "Speaking Our Minds" to them. If like me, their reading capabilities have substantially deteriiorated, please, please read it to them!

An interesting read that provides insight into the mind of Alzheimer patients-nicely done..

3 out of 5 stars Cases are too similar.......2001-11-15

I want to know whether my mother is suffering, I want to know whether she is aware of her disease, and if so, what does she think of it. I want to know what, if anything, I can say or do to comfort her.

And after reading Lisa Snyder's book I still don't have a clue.

Mom's symptoms of Alzheimer's appeared a year and a half ago. She can not, or will not, talk about it. And in this short time her condition has deteriorated mightily. But she isn't like any of the subjects in this book. The people Lisa writes about seem to be at an earlier stage, and to be very self-aware and open to concepts such as therapy. I cannot draw much from their stories.

That said, the book is well written and interesting, and it gives me some comfort to read of people who are living fairly well with this very sad disease. For many readers this will be a 4- or 5- star book, but not for me, not at this time.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Among Books About Alzheimer's Disease.......2000-05-29

This book is suitable for anyone involved in the struggle with AD as well as the general public. I am the husband and caretaker of a wife who was diagnosed five years ago at the age of 53. I am also a social worker, and as I read this book I felt proud that a fellow social worker had written it. This book is full of up to date information concerning AD and it also provides an insightful look at seven individuals who are coping with AD. Lisa Synder has actually worked with people with AD for over a decade and she combines thoughts of persons suffering from AD with her own observations. In most of the vignettes, she writes about an initial interview and then she returns several years later to continue the dialogue and to bring us up to date in the situation. Ms. Synder demonstrates both compassion and admiration toward those she writes about. In the course of this book she dispells many of the misconceptions held by the public concerning AD. I don't think that anyone who reads this book will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Speaking Our Minds" is a major contribution to Alzheimer's.......2000-01-12

Alzheimer's is the 4th leading cause of adult death and the 3rd most costly disease; it also may be the disease most people don't want to know about. "Speaking Our Minds" (W. H. Freeman, 1999, New York) should change that--for patients, families, and clinicians.

When clinicians state they're "in practice," they're recognizing the benefit of learning from direct contact with people afflicted with diseases-for which no medical textbook can substitute. However Lisa Snyder's book is not a textbook. All but 16 pages of her book are devoted to seven case histories. Her vivid descriptions (in italics) provide glimpses of the settings in which patients and caregivers live. The patients' transcribed words (in normal type) exemplify the most common ways of coping with Alzheimer's Disease, from being informed-the bad news diagnoses-to the ongoing toll it takes on autonomy, to being depressed over the ever increasing burden it places on their caregivers.

The poignancy of these tales is enhanced as the author reveals her own emotions through excellent writing. One example: "I effectively redirected my preoccupation with the apartment drapery, reached within, and tugged back my own internal curtains." She equally shares her own attitude as well as those of the patients toward this disease. Denial, anger, humor, depression, and spiritual acceptance are all illustrated. Snyder's gift for writing is effective; for instance, this metaphor: "Alzheimer's disease has many hues. Unfortunately, the diagnosis often extinguishes the light with which to view them."

Patients, caregivers, and clinicians can all glean much understanding and some cautious hope from Snyder's relating these patients' experiences; for example, what it's like to have memory fail, the gift of temporarily forgetting they forget, or the simple joy of another moment in a "second childhood." Readers may accept the author's implicit suggestions for coping: talk honestly to friends and relatives, attend groups, as well as the general approach to responding to their handicap from a better understanding of how the disease has effected them. People unfamiliar with the disease may be impressed with how much quality of life there is in both the early and middle stages, of the disease. Even a severely impaired individual, who depends on others for most activities of daily living, may still retain his/her voice and sweet personality.

One area of the book that no follow-up interview tackled, however, was the devastating manifestations of end-stage disease and the difficult choices that sometimes then need to be made. Perhaps this is a topic in itself, for another book.

Although I am a clinician, I learned much from these seven cases. Psychiatrists are usually called in to see Alzheimer's patients only when they become "management problems," which means when their behavior has passed

the threshold of being tolerated by caregivers. Until recently, I had little contact with people in the earlier stages--where the transition from normal to severely impaired occurs. For this reader, and I imagine, many others of diverse background, therefore, Lisa Snyder's book is a major contribution.
