Book Description
Women's recovery can differ from men's, and each person's recovery is in many ways unique. That's why Stephanie Covington has designed this workbook to help a woman find her own path-- and find it in terms especially suited to the way women experience not just addcition and recovery but also relationships, self, sexuality, and everyday life. Deepening and extending the lessons of a book that has helped countless women, this workbook makes "A Woman's Way through the Twelve Steps" that much more measured, meaningful, and clear. Unlike many "rewritten" Twelve Step interpretations for women, this guide works with the original Step language, preserving its spirit and focusing attention on its healing message. In sections devoted to each of the Twelve Steps, Covington blends narrative, self-assessment questions focused on a feminine definition of terms such as "powerlessness" and "letting go" guided imagery exercises, and physical activities.

Great Book!.......2007-07-25
The workbook is a wonderful companion to the book. I gain so much more understanding and insight to the 12 steps. Be sure to get both books, it is worth it!
A woman's Way is a terrific guide.......2006-02-22
A Woman's Way Through the twelve steps workbook is a great tool to accompany Stephanie Covington's book "A Womans Guide through the Twelve Steps. The questions are insightful and to the point without being overwhelming. I have found these two books to be an immeasurable asset to working the twelve steps.
Heads Up Ladies!.......2000-10-11
This is definitely a head's up and listen up for women in recovery....using this in conjunction with "A Womans' Way Through the Twelve Steps" is a sure way to add to any other 12 step program that you may be using. I am a person who has been in recovery for 10 years, and found that many women's issues were not being addressed and this combination is an absolute winner. It can be used by yourself, working with a sponsor or in a group ..some wonderful "aha's" have been experienced and so many women helped in this process. Read it...do it....you won't be sorry.

For those who suffer from a combined psychiatric illness and chemical dependency
The six out of one hundred people diagnosed with the dual disorders of addiction and mental disorder face unique challenges on the road to recovery. Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2003-07-19
I recently purchased this book in order to understand the complexity of behavior of certain people. Often times, health professionals make a mistake of targeting only one causative aspect of the problem while either ignoring or not recognizing the other. Ignorance of many psychologists and psychiatrists about dual disorders is due to the rarity of this problem. This book is a must read for both mental health providers and their patients. I also believe that many others will benefit from this book even those who do not show underlying symptoms of this disorder. This book helped me understand the reasons as to why some people seems as if they are not making any effort when they actually are.
The book is well written and easy to read. It contains many cases to exemplify the disorder and its treatment success.
Excellent reading.......2001-03-17
This book explores the ways in which family members can understand dual diagnosis. It is helpful for the parent who struggles with kids that have really two troubles (addiction and other mental disorders). Dr. Ortman is concise and offers case studies to explore this issue. I would recommend the book to anyone who is struggling themselves with dual diagnosis or has a loved one who suffers from addiction as well as mental illness. It is easy to read even for a lay person and offers helpful ideas for anyone interested in this issue.

Customer Reviews:
Bibliotherapy.......2007-09-04
Full disclosure here: I'm a holistic doctor, so I'm biased towards natural interventions for mood disorders, and this is stuff that I talk to patients about on an almost daily basis. But I've seldom seen natural therapies for psychological conditions presented in such a balanced, clear, scientific fashion.
I sometimes blanch at the outlandish claims made by some health books that deal with mental conditions. I think they cruelly mislead patients to believe that there's a vitamin or a supplement for every psychiatric complaint. Reinforcing denial is not good for patients at risk to themselves and others. But Jack Challem is versed in the latest science, and never strays far from the evidence in making his case for natural approaches.
There's clearly a place for drugs in the treatment of mental disorders, but I wish books like this got wider circulation because we could relieve untold suffering with a few basic suggestions herein. Studies have actually shown that good self-help books cure sufferers of mild to moderate depression at a rate comparable to that of Zoloft, Paxil and other commonly used drugs. They've even coined a term for it: "Bibliotherapy"!
So take this book and call your shrink in the morning--it may really not be so far-fetched! I think I'll start stocking it in my dispensary to give to my patients.
Ronald L. Hoffman, MD, New York City
It makes sense -- and it works!.......2007-08-14
Jack Challem seems to have written this book just for me. I was so tired of seeing doctors who merely prescribed multi-bad-effects medications and who each told me a different cause of my problems. I had to became very proactive to save my own health.
I was always exhausted, in body and spirit. I felt like I was in a constant brain fog, getting early Alzheimer's! I awakened more tired than when I went to bed, longing to take naps, no needing them. I have had fibromyalgia for 15 years and am taking medications for this, taking two medications which help tremendously but cause side effects. I have hypertension, am an adult with ADD. Like most people I am stressed, anxious, impatient, lack focus, taking care of an elderly parent......sound familiar? But I am an early retired teacher who loved her job and should be more relaxed and healthy. I want and need my active life-style back. I'm not "that old"!!
Well, I was literally sick from taking meds, so I picked up Mr. Challem's book just by chance and found I COULD help myself, was doing so many wrong nutritional things, made some of his easy, suggested changes and, to my disbelief, found great relief within two weeks! I have always taken supplements and watched my health - so I thought - but still felt bad most of the time. And only the suggestions made in this book have helped me feel so much better. This author makes sense.
In the easiest reading and well organized presentation, Mr. Challem specifically presents HOW food affects mood and four steps to change. He discusses real, every day problems: how to realistically reduce our levels of stress and anxiety, how to handle our irritability, how to have more energy. And his suggestions, fully explained so even I would understand them, worked!
He goes on to take us step by step through a "recovery" process in which we can "fix" ourselves - armed with nutritional understanding and easy to do changes in our diet and life style. And best of all Mr. Challem clearly points out the specific connections between foods and moods and gives the reader things to DO and things to avoid....along with some of the best recipes I have ever tried.
While all his information is data based, I could easily understand the author and put his connections and suggestions to use immediately. And they have made a wonderfully positive change in my health, my entire life.
And he sells no supplements!
This book is a perfect gift for any friend or family member (underlining and notes will have you hold on to your own copy!) who has hypertension, fibromyalgia, ADD, exhaustion, depression, who is overweight or those irritating characteristics of impatience, irritsbility, stress, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, forgetfulness ---- characteristics we certainly notice in THEM but seldom admit about ourselves!
Buy this book for your own health and sanity --- and some to give as gifts to those you care about. These ideas make sense and work.
Enlightening & Informative - Several lightbulb moments!.......2007-08-10
I had difficulty understanding why I acted certain ways when my stomach was empty or full for that matter but now I know why I act the way I do after reading The Food-Mood Solution. My friends use to kindly remind me to eat something when I got too cranky for them to tolerate. Food really does effect your mood. If you don't think so, you really do need to read this book! Enjoy......
Eating healthy means feeling great.......2007-08-03
Controlling moods with food is nothing new for me. The trouble was I went to the wrong foods for a quick fix that had a negative effect on my health, weight and moods. Jack Challem's book is full of stories I can relate to and it is worth the price for his recipes alone. They are terrific!
Excellent Expert Solutions.......2007-07-01
A concise, insightful, easy to understand read that can liberate the average person from the downside of the average American diet. Look around and see how right Mr Challem is, then test his theories in your own life. It's a relief to see what great, quick results you can get when you try his solutions.
Book Description
Today's top addiction consultants guide families devastated by a loved one's addiction. As countless families can attest, addiction is a disease that destroys families, not just individuals. Secrecy, depression, anger, and confusion are hallmark traits of addicted families. Addiction wrecks the family's home life, consumes the family's financial resources, and depletes the family???s emotional reserves. Now, having helped thousands of families confront addiction, two of the nation's leading interventionists, Robert Poznanovich and Andrew T. Wainwright, have created a survival guide for families. With compelling case histories and real-life scenarios, the authors set forth a practical course ofaction for families to break free from the grip of addiction, a process that culminates with an intervention for the addict. The process liberates and forever changes the family. Even if the addict refuses treatment, truth about addiction has been spoken during the intervention and the family is free to move ahead??? with or without the addict.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for the Addicted and the Family Affected.......2007-05-13
A must read for anyone dealing with addiction in their family. Gives you a much clearer perspective.
This is a must-read for EVERY parent.......2007-04-17
As a father of 5 children I want to encourage all parents with young children (and those who are still in the planning stage) to read this book. Yes, the book is all about addictions and actually says very little about parenting, per se. But here's what it DOES describe: the seamy underside of life no one wants to talk about until it's (sometimes) too late. I hope none of my children (and none of yours) ever has to go through addictions and withdrawal, but addictions are real. You'd have to live under a rock not to recognize it's a fact of life today.
But it doesn't have to be a fact of YOUR life. And that's the beauty part of this book. Although I'm certain the authors didn't set out to shock readers into recognizing the importance of being an involved parent, it does achieve this better than any other parenting book I've ever read.
In about 150 pages we parents get to see what happens when we overly coddle, forget to establish firm boundaries and lack the personal discipline to discipline. We are treated to the cold, hard outcome when parents replace tough love (the authors call it "clarity") with pacifism. Pacifistic parenting is the kind that says things like, "Here's some money son, go entertain yourself...I'm busy working making money to pay for the stuff we all `need.'" Eventually the kid gets the message and finds something to replace the relationship and structure they're supposed to get from their parents, putting them on a collision course for being a character in this book.
There is a price to pay (sooner or later) and this book gives graphic detail (even from the authors' own lives) of the hell we'll all pay if we continue failing to step up. And trust me; the cost of fixing things when children are young is far cheaper than the cost later on.
A Must if You Have An Active Addict in Your Life.......2007-03-17
This book provided a whole lot of answers to questions I'd had about addiction and the best way to deal with an addict. I heartily recommend it to anyone seeking answers.
Parents Need What This Book Offers.......2007-02-15
I am the program chair for parentshelpingparents.info and one of my roles to review books on addictions and select one as our book of the quarter.
I have selected this book for the second quarter of 2007. It is one of the very best books I have read that communicates to families in a manner that is both direct, loving and honest. I felt like I was in my living room visiting with the author's face to face.
The information presented goes beyond education; it makes an ingenious transition which pierces the wall of denial, we as families, must conquer before progress for our loved one is possible.
Respectfully,
Pat Nichols

Customer Reviews:
Dr. Breggin is refreshingly one-sided, in a land where medications RULE!.......2007-01-17
I was diagnosed with depression in 1997 and was prescribed Zoloft which I took for a year. Thanks to this book I was able to QUIT and have been drug-free for 10 years! Yes, the drugs "work" if chemically altering your mood is your goal in life! SSRIs act just like cocaine and other stimulants in the brain. They do the same mood-lifting things only without all the side ('fried') effects of major stimulants. (And they are just as hard to quit, with their own withdrawal symptoms!) IS THAT THE KIND OF CURE YOU WANT?
Or are you willing to listen to what your depression is telling you and CHANGE WHAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED IN YOUR LIFE? Depression does NOT come out of nowhere! It's a VALID REACTION to life, giving you ACCURATE SYMPTOMS of real distress, whether you choose to believe them or not! But in our day & age, it's not fashionable to ADMIT that we're not happy with our lives -- "I have everything I could want, why am I feeling like this?" We medicate ourselves instead because it's so much easier to say "I have a medical condition that requires medication", and by golly, the majority of people "feel better" when they're taking antidepressants! Amazing wonder drugs capable of fixing most 21st-century emotional woes!!
Look around, folks!! Should we accept that most of our friends and co-workers (and SELVES) are "ON MEDS!" just so we/they can have a decent life? It's the breakdown of families, of close-knit communities, of real relationships and friendships and meaningful human interactions which are driving this epidemic. We need more people learning the old forgotten skills of helping one another to COPE. But that's messy and inconvenient-- not the American way!!
Big Pharma quackery.......2006-03-14
Peter Breggin has done the world a favor by exposing the fraud and profit motives of the $20 billion dollar anti-depressant industry. Instead of respecting natural feelings over a wide-array of societal problems, people are instead being encouraged by corporate shamans to take the dope they push. Interestingly, the sellers of these drugs are free to make a fortune while cannabis sellers are put into prisons, and often prescribed the corporate drugs while they are incarcerated! I imagine that if Eli Lilly held a patent on marijuana, we'd see ads promoting pot use on tv tomorrow.
If people find some relief from Prozac, more power to them; but drug companies have applied marketing skills where what's more often needed is skilled therapy. ("New Dimensions Broadcasting" provides weekly interviews with healers that don't require manipulations of our brain chemistry). Predictably, drug-free approaches to mental health are given short shrift by Big Pharma. Everything from changes in diet, altered media consumption, meditation, political empowerment, community involvement and much else can provide the peace of mind so many are longing for in this maddening world. There's even a book that suggests philosophy could be used to think through our mental dis-ease ("Plato, Not Prozac"). I've purchased several copies of "Talking Back to Prozac" to share with people who are questioning the wisdom of taking powerful psychoactives, or putting their kids on them.
The work of Breggin and a growing number of Big Pharma critics came to mind when I read this headline from the March 9, 2006 issue of the satirical newspaper, "The Onion": Wonder Drug Inspires Deep, Unwavering Love of Pharmaceutical Companies. The story reads - "The Food and Drug Administration today approved the sale of the drug PharmAmorin, a prescription tablet developed by Pfizer to treat chronic distrust of large prescription-drug manufacturers. Pfizer executives characterized the FDA's approval as a 'godsend' for sufferers of independent-thinking-related mental health disorders. 'Many individuals lack the deep, abiding affection for drug makers that is found in healthy people, such as myself,' Pfizer CEO Hank McKinnel said. "These tragic disorders are reaching epidemic levels, and as a company dedicated to promoting the health, well-being, and long life of our company's public image, it was imperative that we did something to combat them.'"
could have been better.......2005-08-11
Dr. Breggin's book casts a very illuminating light on the flaws of the drug approval process in America and the shortcomings of the antidepressant Prozac. I am disappointed when reading others reviews though that most people are more intent on rating Prozac and not the book. The book is extremely one-sided. I was taught as far back as elementary school that essays should be constructed with Pro and Con arguments. The author, while pointing out many cases of individuals unhappy with the drug, fails to discuss anyone who's life has been positively affected by Prozac. As far as his citations go...they appear to be very selective...he backs up things here and there but if this were a scholarly work it would be rejected in the peer review process. He also makes many ridiculous claims that made me laugh...e.g "Although alcohol has been widely used throughout human society since before recorded history, only in the last decade have we begun to face the scope of its deadly impact on human behaviour and society" (Page 93 chapter 4, hardcover edition). I am fairly certain that people have known about alcohol's destructive effects for as long as it has been used....maybe Dr. Breggin just figured it out. The book started out well...but as I read more and more...the strength of his points began to be washed out by his fervor and he appeared to me to become more and more of a zealot than a person providing any sort of a fair, unbiased review of a drug...too bad...could have been a very good book.
An excellent book if you are uninformed about the downsides.......2004-08-26
This is a classic only because Peter Breggin does his homework. I am a biased reader because I am a Naturopathic physician who treats depression with homeopathic medicine (a far superior solution to drugs).
But my bias aside, I think the book has great merit because Breggin really raises good and sound questions about the so called science behind antidepressants. He makes the process of getting a drug passed explicit and shows how corrupt the process is. In addition, the often difficult process of getting questionable drugs off the market is explained. A process that is often at the expense of the patient and to the benefit of Big Pharma.
Breggin is not so great about coming up with solutions however. Deep longstanding depression is not always amenable to psychotherapy. At least those are a lot of the patients that I'm referred. People who have tried many things without success - therapy, counseling, drugs, etc.
I see homeopathy work with many, though of course not all, of these intractable cases. There must be other effective natural means to help people resolve deep seated depression as well. So this, in my mind is the major weakness in Breggin's books, he is not looking past his own nose about solutions.
Clearly drugs are not a true solution, but counseling on its own is often not enough either. Besides going to see a skilled homeopath (not so easy to find), people have also mentioned dietary changes, community support, friends, family, and other methods as being helpful. So that would be what would fill this book out and make it complete.
Breggin is courageous and right on.......2004-04-03
The negative reviews call Breggin unscientific, fear mongering, etc., but Breggin was just ahead of his time. In the past year, English regulators have warned against SSRI use (except Prozac)in youths and adolescents, basically due to the dangers Breggin warns of in this book. Recent headlines in the U.S. report the FDA is also recommending similar warnings about agitation and suicidality resulting from use of SSRI's in children and adults.A 2004 network evening news headline story recounted how a senior FDA scientist recently reviewed SSRI trials and concluded that suicidal ideation occurred twice as often in the SSRI group as in the placebo group (and then the FDA tried to suppress the public revelation of the conclusions of their own scientist).
The truth is the drug companies knew from the start that SSRI's pose serious dangers of agitation, akathisia and suicidality. It's been years since anyone on the inside seriously believed the Serotonin imbalance theory of depression. This information has been available all along and was deliberately suppressed by the drug companies. Now, ten years later, people are beginning to wake up, acting as though this is brand new news.
Go online to Prevention and Treatment, Volume 5, articles 22 through 32, published by the American Psychological Association, for extensive discussion of the fact that the FDA trials barely showed any difference between the SSRI's and placebo.
Better still, read Let them Eat Prozac, by David Healy, soon to be available in the U.S. Healy is a total psychiatric insider, an SSRI researcher and perhaps the world's leading authority on the history of the development of SSRI's. He's not an anti-psychiatrist. He's just pro-truth. He cites chapter and verse, and his conclusions are basically the same as Breggin's.
The negative reviewers simply miss the mark. To judge the value of Breggin's books, you need do one thing: List his specific factual claims, and then try to find in mainstream psychiatric literature any attempt to rebut those specific claims, point by point.
Not "he's dangerous," or "he's a zealot," or "he's unscientific," but actually point for point. For instance, Breggin charges that many Prozac patients in the FDA trials were also put on Benzodiazepines because Prozac alone made them so agitated they couldn't sleep. Look for mainstream psychiatry to a) state whether Breggin's claim is actually true, b) explain why that isn't a serious comment on Prozac, and c) answer Breggin's claim that where Benzo's were used, if the patients on Benzo's were excluded, the Prozac group was no more effective than placebo.
Healy makes many of the same specific points, and more. He exposes the systematic way the drug companies distorted their research and saw to it that both the scientific literature and popular promotional material contained the same distortions.
Breggin was right, and his critics, who accuse him of being shrill and unscientific, are describing themselves more than they describe Breggin.
Book Description
In "Improving Treatment Compliance", Dennis C. Daley, M.S.W., and Allan Zuckoff, M.A., address what may be the most important tasks in treating substance abuse and dual disorders: getting clients to attend treatment and motivating clients to work on the problems that are causing them pain and dysfunction.
Customer Reviews:
essential.......2007-08-30
In an age when we have seen addictions therapists blame the client for non-compliance, this book offers a way to think outside of the box and treat addiction as the disease that it really is. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
This comprehensive and accessible book documents the physical and emotional effects of substance abuse in girls and women, explores the role of the advertising and entertainment industries in popularizing various substances of abuse, and discusses the way America responds to this enormous health problem.
Covering a broad range of substances -- nicotine, alcohol, prescription and illicit drugs -- the book addresses the unique reasons that girls and women smoke and abuse alcohol and drugs. It provides the most current information about the use of prescription and club drugs, key warning signs of addiction, and options for prevention and treatment. The book includes historical anecdotes and testimonies from recovering women.
Incorporating more than a decade of extensive research, Women under the Influence will help women, health care professionals, educators, and policy makers understand the scope of substance abuse in girls and women, the urgency of responding to the problem, the key points of intervention, and potential roads to recovery.

Women under the influence.......2006-07-01
Book was very 'DRY' in the reading. It is informative, but the way that it was written was a bit too much. Author uses long vague descriptions before you finally understand what they are trying to say. Like using 500 words when 10 words would have explained the same thing in a better way.
Where is my books??????.......2006-03-17
I never received this book or two others that I purchased!
Substance Abuse among Women.......2006-03-14
This is a thorough report of scietific research on the differences between men and women and their reactions to the use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs. It is essential reading for anyone needing to understand the topic and those who are caught up in this problem.

Book Description
This exciting new book addresses the important issue of how to provide integrated mental health and substance misuse treatment of individuals with these co-occurring disorders. Combining both theory and practice, by the use of illustrative clinical case material, it provides a survey of different approaches to the integration of mental health and substance misuse services. A unique collection of chapters, from authors who are experts in the field and pioneering innovative approaches, provides an international perspective (including UK, Germany, Australia, USA, Canada) of treatment.
Arranged in five sections, Section 1 provides an introduction to the issue of substance misuse amongst those with psychosis. Section 2 introduces a range of integrated service models from different countries. The third section provides a practical hands-on guide to assessment and treatment. The fourth section addresses the specific treatment needs of special population groups (including young people, forensic groups, homeless people and those with HIV/AIDS). The final section examines treatment outcome studies and implications for the future.
Clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, case managers, and psychiatric social workers in training and practice in clinic, hospital and community settings will find this book an essential practical resource for working with individuals (and their families) with co-occurring disorders.
