Book Description

Can you really feel better as you get older?

Is aging without illness possible?

Is your own internal fountain of youth waiting to be discovered?

Yes, yes, and YES! says Suzanne Somers, the bestselling author of The Sexy Years. It can all be true when you take advantage of the new science of antiaging medicine—a revolutionary approach to achieving the ageless life.

Suzanne Somers introduced millions of women to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and changed the way we look at menopause with her groundbreaking book, The Sexy Years, and the overwhelming media response to its publication. Now, in Ageless, Suzanne introduces an inspiring, medically validated approach to reversing the aging process and maintaining a healthy, vibrant, mentally sharp, sexually active life—while building the body’s natural defenses against age-related diseases.

Ageless is jam-packed with new, updated information on bioidentical hormone replacement and antiaging that will change your life forever. Suzanne talks about:

• Antiaging medicine and how it can help work against the environmental assault that is making us sick, including how to detox the body of harmful pollutants and chemicals and strengthen our weakest glands and organs

• Menopause, which can become an enjoyable passage once the body is in perfect hormonal sync with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

• The dangers of perimenopause and how women can treat it

• Why so many hysterectomies are unnecessary, how birth control pills may have contributed to the rise of hysterectomies, and how to restore your body to perfect hormonal balance after having one

• How andropause is a real condition for men, and how men can lose weight, regain their youthful physiques, and restore heath, energy, and sexuality, all through bioidentical HRT

• The importance of sleep and the healing work that nature does during this time to balance hormones and increase energy

In this “antiaging bible,” Suzanne brings together prominent, Western-trained antiaging doctors who are at the forefront of a medical revolution to show how the traditional medical approach is woefully inadequate and outdated. Its standard of care has been to treat all symptoms with drugs, but in Ageless you will find out how this approach does not make us better. With antiaging medicine you can heal your body rather than keep a chronic condition at bay with drugs. Ageless shows you how to keep your “insides” young, and how this manifests on the outside.

What could be better than having your doctor tell you that you have the bones of a twenty-year-old, or the heart of a thirty-year-old? You can be young on the inside if you follow the advice in Ageless. Suzanne reveals the secrets to youthfulness that everyone can achieve and shows us all how to live the ageless life!

How young is your energy?

“The second half of your life can be better than your first half. A better life, a healthier life, a life of youthful energy comes from embracing antiaging medicine, and bioidentical hormone replacement is a big component. . . . The second half of life can be wonderful. I know it because I am living it. This new approach to health gives you back your lean body, shining hair, and thick skin, provided you are eating correctly and exercising in moderation. This new medicine allows your brain to work perfectly and offers the greatest defense against cancer, heart attack, and Alzheimer’s disease. Don’t you want that?” —From the Introduction

5 out of 5 stars REMARKABLE BOOK.......2007-10-06

"Ageless" is unique in the field of aging literature in that it strikes a remarkable balance, especially for a celebrity penned tome, between cheerleading for taking better care of oneself, and explaining the science behind the advice.

Somers wisely relies on the advice of many doctors and presents their wisdom in easily understandable format. She spends a lot of time on hormone inbalances, a topic not discussed nearly often enough.

If you're expecting another celebrity written "fluff" book with some obvious advice on aging and health, look elsewhere. Somers has studied and knows her stuff. This is actually the first of a new breed: the celebrity written scientific book.

Somers has written the best celebrity health book ever. I also recently read perhaps the funniest book on aging and health that had me rolling on the floor - Race You To The Fountain of Youth. Race You to the Fountain of Youth: I'm Not Dead Yet (But parts of me are going fast)

I was prepared to dislike "Ageless" because it was penned by a celebrity. instead I came away with a tremendous admiration for Somers and her desire to learn anout health and horomone imbalance.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-09-27

This book is an amazing, indepth and comprehensive look at what can be done for both men and women who suffer from hormone imbalance. I am so greatful to my sister for encouraging me to read the book. "Help is on the way."

5 out of 5 stars She's got more doctor interviews and more up to date information in this latest BHRT bible.......2007-09-06

The title of this book prompts a disclaimer. The word Ageless is clearly an attention getter used to sell books. The definition is "not affected by time or age." In no way do I believe there are as yet any lotions, potions or cutting edge docs who can prevent the aging process.
What I do believe is that we can make use of the latest research to support our bodies to fight off the diseases and complaints of aging. So does the author.

Now on to the book.

Suzanne Somers has pulled together an enormous amount of research and features interviews with sixteen practitioners with different but sometimes overlapping specialties. What we end up with are the key components of healing what ails you now and preventing what lurks in the future.
"I believe it is possible to experience aging without illness, which is the big dream for all of us. We don't fear getting older; we fear getting sick, really sick" says Ms. Somers.

Yes Suzanne is a Bio-Identical Hormone replacement (BHRT) zealot. She is a well educated one and someone who lives what she preaches. Her life is vastly improved through the concepts proposed--detox, healthy lifestyle, sleep!, and BHRT for women and men.

Lest you don't know her story she is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed when she was already well into feeling better than ever through her hormone replacement choices and refused to give them up during her treatment. Bold yes, some might say stupid, but her decision served her.
I mention that bit to get you past the misconception that bio-identical hormone replacement causes to cancer. It does not. The reasons are complex and too long to go into here. Get the book. It speaks to this specifically.

So what can bio-identical hormones do for us? They can turn off, or slow down, the "time to die" signals. Hormones keep us strong and healthy when we are younger so we can breed and care for our young and ensure the success of future generations by doing so. Once we are done with that whole process our hormones start to dry up and the signal that sends to the body is, "time to go, you are no longer a productive."

That's the simplified Greg-speak version. The big point is when hormones decline or are out of balance we are susceptible to the diseases associated with aging. These include Alzheimer's, cancer, and heart disease. Dr. Robert Greene of Specialty Care for Women in Redding, CA has this to say, "Take Alzheimer's disease, for example. Several studies done on both men and women show if someone has an estradiol level of less than 20 pg/mL, they are at highest risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and cognitive disturbances." And we wouldn't want to prevent that why?

It's not just the hormonal decline that's responsible for our poor health and disease rates it's also the toxins we ingest. Exogenous (foreign essentially) hormones--found in dairy products, birth control, and in some instances the water supply-- are toxic since they are not made in our bodies and are said to be responsible for the increase in reproductive organ cancers such as breast, testicular and cervical.

Add to this the toxic load we ingest daily in the form of pesticides, plastics, creams laden with non-cancer causing but non-the-less disturbing chemicals and our bodies begin to break down under the weight. The burden of toxicity causes fatigue, aches, pains, and upsets and we call that "normal for someone my age."

Detox is a big part of the The Ageless prescription for wellbeing.

Sleep is another biggy in this book; an underrated "miracle cure." Sound sleep is hard to come by when your hormones are out of whack though. During deepest sleep our body does its repair work and pumps out restorative hormones. No stages of deep sleep and health decline is inevitable.

This book is far more comprehensive than her first visit to the BHRT world, The Sexy Years. Medicine moves at the speed of light and since her first book there have been many studies, clinical trials come to term, and women with stories of success to draw from. But stories don't guarantee safety and this book backs up all of the successes with science.

If you are currently a woman of a certain age, even if you are "too young" to think about hormone replacement--and if you have PMS, PCO, or other "female" malady you are not too young--you might want to use this book as a primer. Learn what is preventable and then you can figure out how you want to go about preventing it. Or not. It's obviously a personal thing.

Long term care is expensive, far more so than a book with practical information that you can implement now. Ignorance is also expensive. Give yourself the inexpensive gift of an open mind and you just might want to spend some of that insurance money on making your wildest dreams come true.

5 out of 5 stars One of best Anti-Aging books, written for laymen.......2007-06-24

I learned considerable new anti-aging information, from Ageless, although I have read numerous books on this topic. I suspect most physicians would also learn some new information, from this book, which was written, in 2006.

Ageless, contains an abundance of leading edge medical knowledge concerning estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, melatonin, and human growth hormone replacement, breast cancer risks and treatment. Suzanne Somers survived breast cancer and continued on biodentical hormone replacement, while declining chemotherapy. She has researched hormone replacement far more thoroughly, than the "medical reporters," who have dominated media coverage of hormone replacement, with unbalanced, over-sensationalized, misleading articles. I have heard Suzanne Somers speak and she is dynamic, fluid, articulate, knowledgeable, humorous and inspiring.

I was especially impressed with the interviews of T S Wiley and Julie Taguchi, MD. Suzanne Somers conveyed the cancer reduction benefits of extended breast feeding, early and multiple pregnancy more clearly, than Sex, Lies and Menopause. The evidence demonstrating hormone replacement reduced breast cancer deaths thirty percent, while decreasing inflammation, deserves wider publicity.

Some of the physicians interviewed propose monthly cycling of progesterone and estrogen, citing research that monthly cycling, imitating the monthly menstrual period results in beneficial up-regulation of estrogen receptors.

Florida Detox clinical experience verifies bioidentical hormone replacement can produce dramatic reductions of depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, migraine and interstitial cystitis. Many chemical dependency relapses are driven by hormonal deficiencies.

Suzanne Somers addresses the strange irony, that many people refuse treatment with safe, natural biodentical hormones, stating it is unnatural to avoid hormonal decline, with aging. Despite their refusal to accept natural hormone replacement therapy, these increasingly unhealthy individuals, willingly accept blood pressure, cholesterol, pain, insomnia and antidepressant medication, angioplasty, coronary bypass, and artificial joint replacement. Natural hormone replacement can reduce or eliminate the need for these medications and surgeries.

The conversational style of the interviews creates a very readable discussion of anti-aging medicine. Although Ageless does not contain many research citations, The Menopause Clinics of America website, http://www.replacehrt.com/research.shtml. contains many abstracts and citations of published, peer reviewed research, including many of the studies, discussed in Ageless.

This book also contains many very clever, funny jokes, regarding aging.
I did detect an apparent typo, where testosterone was said to decrease hemoglobin. Many excellent, books have at least one typo error and indeed it seems almost inevitable, that a lengthy book will contain one. Despite this apparent error, I feel this book easily deserves five stars.

A frequent complaint, in previous reviews of this book, concerns the expense of bioidentical hormone replacement. Suzanne Somers helped found the Menopause Clinics of America, which are already located, in many states and plan to be nationwide. I have previously recommended the Menopause Clinics of America, in Denver, CO, and am impressed with the quality of care provided. Their fees, testing and prescription costs are very reasonable and their staff is very knowledgeable and patient oriented.

Book Description

Why do some people age in failing health and sadness, while others grow old with vitality and joy?

In this revolutionary book, bestselling author John Robbins presents us with a bold new paradigm of aging, showing us how we can increase not only our lifespan but also our health span. Through the example of four very different cultures that have the distinction of producing some of the world’s healthiest, oldest people, Robbins reveals the secrets for living an extended and fulfilling life in which our later years become a period of wisdom, vitality, and happiness. From Abkhasia in the Caucasus south of Russia, where age is beauty, and Vilcabamba in the Andes of South America, where laughter is the greatest medicine, to Hunza in Central Asia, where dance is ageless, and finally the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa, the modern Shangri-la, where people regularly live beyond a century, Robbins examines how the unique lifestyles of these peoples can influence and improve our own.

Bringing the traditions of these ancient and vibrantly healthy cultures together with the latest breakthroughs in medical science, Robbins reveals that, remarkably, they both point in the same direction. The result is an inspirational synthesis of years of research into healthy aging in which Robbins has isolated the characteristics that will enable us to live long and–most important–joyous lives. With an emphasis on simple, wholesome, but satisfying fare, and the addition of a manageable daily exercise routine, many people can experience great improvement in the quality of their lives now and for many years to come. But perhaps more surprising is Robbins’ discovery that it is not diet and exercise alone that helps people to live well past one hundred. The quality of personal relationships is enormously important. With startling medical evidence about the effects of our interactions with others, Robbins asserts that loneliness has more impact on lifespan than such known vices as smoking. There is clearly a strong beneficial power to love and connection.

“We all have the tools to live longer lives, and to remain active, productive, and resourceful until the very end,” Robbins writes. Healthy at 100 strives to improve both the quality and the quantity of our remaining years–no matter how old or how healthy we might currently be–and to reverse the social stigma on aging. After reading this book, we will never think about age–or life–in the same way again.

“John Robbins has inspired millions of people with his eloquent, clear, compassionate, and insightful guidance on the path to health and fulfillment. Healthy at 100 may be his finest work to date. If you are interested in extending your health span as well as your life span, read this book! Healthy at 100 is a masterpiece.”
–Dean Ornish, M.D., president and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease

“This is a remarkably open and heartfelt book full of wisdom and love by an extraordinary man who has been teaching us how to live more healthy and compassionate lives for over twenty years now. John Robbins has created a new vision of aging for American society.”
–John Mackey, CEO, Whole Foods

“John Robbins is one of the most important voices in America today. He cuts through nonsense like no one else does. He gives hope like no one else does. His words are lifelines for both the body and soul. This book can literally save our lives.”
–Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love and A Woman’s Worth

“Healthy at 100 is a marvelous blend of wisdom, hope, courage, and common sense. John Robbins gives us caring, science, and inspiration–a beautiful diet for the heart.”
–Jack Kornfield, co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock, author of A Path with Heart

“As the low-carb diet craze is gone, John Robbins proposes a far healthier approach that leads not just to a healthy weight but also to a joyful and fulfilled life. Healthy at 100 is packed with informed and heartfelt wisdom.”
–Jorge Cruise, author of The 3-Hour Diet, creator of JorgeCruise.com

“John Robbins inspires me on every page. His unique experiences and viewpoints were the reasons I wanted him to be in my film Super Size Me. This book only reinforces my faith in him as a thought-provoking humanitarian.”
–Morgan Spurlock, producer and director of Super Size Me

5 out of 5 stars Health at 100.......2007-09-20

John Robbin's book Health at 100 is one of the finest books I've read on living a healthy, vibrant life. Based on his own life experience and more particulary on the extensive research around the longest lived and healthiest, happiest people on the planet it is a must read for any person, at any age and stage of life, seeking sound, commensense input on living a healthy life. Very well written and engaging I was truely reinspired the whole book through. I have purchases copies for family and friends.

John's watershed book "Diet For A New America" was the catalyst, 20 years ago, for me becoming a Vegan Vegetarian. This is every bit as profound and compelling. John A Wood, Darlington, Western Australia

4 out of 5 stars Good nutrition advice.......2007-09-19

The first part of the book dealing with nutrition and exercise is unobjectionable, if a bit repetitive and rambling at times. Many people in the West could adopt a much more healthy lifestyle without too much trouble. But the part of the book dealing with love and happiness is straight out of the 1960's. Simply put, in the societies Robbins studied, where people live in isolated mountain and valley enclaves, people probably had little choice but to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Furthermore, in their isolation they were able to live in relatively peaceful and simple societies, where love and fellowship were common. But the rest of the world does not, can not, and will not operate this way. The second half of the book contains simply too much politically leftist, feel-good gobbledygook. Good book on diet and exercise but four stars overall.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating - Important - Hopeful.......2007-09-09

I listened to this book on CD in my car. I don't know if I could have gotten through reading it but listening to it is just FASCINATING. The information in this book is both sobering and hopeful. It has changed how I view aging for myself and all Americans. As John Robbins tells us, we are living longer but suffering longer too. The information he reports from his massive study is how we can ensure vitality, energy and love soooooooooooo much longer into our elder years than we experience as a nation now. This book has changed my life and I've already handed the CDs over to someone I care for. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Scientific Proof for Vegetarian Lifestyle.......2007-08-30

John Robbins has done it again. "Healthy at 100" presents studies of the world's longest-lived peoples, finding that -- despite their wide geographical separation -- they share certain lifestyle traits in common: They all have a largely vegetarian diet; they all live lightly on the land, in harmony with their environment; they all live physically active lives, even into their 100's; they all value and revere their elders; and they all have strong spiritual traditions. Oh, and they are happy. They have simple, low-stress lives. They have little sickness -- certainly none of the chronic illnesses -- like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer -- that we in the West succumb to by the thousands, and take for granted as a part of aging. And they don't war with their neighbors. Surely we could all learn powerful lessons from this book. I wish everyone would read John Robbins' books. We would have healthier, happier, more peaceful lives; and we would live longer in the bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Common sense wisdom, traditional diets, friendships, sun, fresh air, meditation and daily exercise .. a must read .. excellent.......2007-08-27

This book was recommended to me by Physicians from California as well as New England as one of the best guides for any cancer patient to take positive steps to regain her health and well being... It is a simple read, filled with wonderful factual information, scientific findings, and easy steps to take every day to improve your health through the foods you choose and those you eliminate, meditation, exercise, yoga, QiQong or Tai Chi, relationships, etc. John Robbins describes the communities of longest lived peoples who enjoy a quality lifestyle free from disease. In 1994 I visited Vilcabamba, Ecuador near the Peruvian border with my daughter, not knowing its significance during the visit I was amazed to see such healthy men and women in their 80's, 90's and 100's ..I watched an 84 year old woman climb up the hillside of an Andean mountain carrying wood on her back for a nearby Inn. She was not winded, had beautiful long black hair, no gray, all her own teeth and no glasses.. After deliverying her bundle, she had a bit to drink and sprang into a dance with some of the local musicians, then went back the way she came.. something she did twice a day.. Wherever we were in this community we heard people singing while they worked, while they walked, and while they cooked...People treated each other with great respect and consideration, smiles were everywhere as we saw wonderful relationships within their community...Just the way John Robbins described in his book.. I highly recommend these books to anyone who has a severe illness; who is interested in understanding how to improve their health or that of their children .. especially anyone whose children have allergies...

This book is a winner...it helps you respect your body, its ability to regenerate and gives one pause on how you envision your own life's journey

The China Study was also recommended to read next by the same physicians..

Barry Sears started the diet movement of the decade with the Zone's 40-30-30 eating plan (40 percent carbohydrate, 30 percent each fat and protein). In The Anti- Aging Zone, Sears explains that he thinks aging is not caused so much by depleted hormone levels but by a lack of communication among hormones.

So what exactly do these hormones have to do with aging? Estrogen and testosterone levels affect sex drive and skin tone; a drop in melatonin can lead to insomnia. Wavering serotonin levels have been shown to be a factor in depression. Insulin gone haywire can mean diabetes. While the intricacies of these hormonal interrelationships are the makings of a graduate degree in endocrinology, Sears offers a layperson's short course. It boils down to this: the vastly complicated hormonal action in humans is controlled by eicosanoids, what he calls "super hormones." And eating in the way advocated by The Anti-Aging Zone, he argues, can help maintain proper eicosanoid functioning, thereby preventing the litany of health problems associated with aging--both mental and physical.

The Anti-Aging Zone is sure to be controversial: Sears recommends a daily intake of just 1,200 calories for women and 1,500 for men, about 40 percent fewer than the U.S. RDA. It's also not just a diet plan, but a lifestyle plan, with guidelines for meditation (to reduce levels of cortisol, a stress hormone) to improve brain longevity, and moderate amounts of exercise, including strength training. But Sears adds a solid guide to supplements (the essential, the important, the exotic and expensive) and herbs, and a rundown of the mind-body-diet connection. While The Anti-Aging Zone isn't especially easy to follow, it's an eye-opening and educational guide to the aging process and the control you have over your own health.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Americans have been systematically overeating for the past 15 years, author Barry Sears states, and thus cheating themselves out of longer, more functional lives. So passionate is Sears about his central idea--eat less, live longer--that it seems as if he has to deliberately put the brakes on his own voice to keep his theories from tumbling out in one big incomprehensible jumble. (Even with the brakes on, many words--like cal'rie--lose a syllable.) Odd cadences aside, Sears makes the case that his high-protein, low-carbohydrate, moderate-fat Zone diet plan will help people live to a riper old age. Book Description

How old are you now? Want to look younger, live longer, and feel better?

Enter the Anti-Aging Zone

With his #1 New York Times bestseller The Zone, Dr. Sears began revolutionizing nutritional thinking in America. Now, his cutting-edge hormonal-control research is elevated to a new level that promises to change forever how we look at aging.

No one wants to get old or show the signs of age. In fact, for centuries many have searched for, and often promised, the fountain of youth. So what makes The Anti-Aging Zone different?

In this new, breakthrough book. Dr. Sears goes beyond looking at food as simply a source of calories and explains the incredibly powerful biological effects it has on your hormones. From this unique perspective, food is more than a source of sustenance; it becomes the most powerful drug known to man. More important, it is the only drug proven to reverse the aging process. In addition to unraveling the mysteries of your hormones and their role in aging, Dr. Sears reveals the essential dietary information you need to start your own age-reversal journey. Using his simple and easy-to-follow program, you will be able to live longer and live better beginning with your very next meal.

As Dr. Sears explains, the aging process isn't caused as much by the depletion or lack of hormones as we get older, but rather by their impaired ability to communicate with each other. Little-known "super-hormones" called eicosanoids can reestablish the critical communications links between your hormones, which is the key to age reversal. The brilliance of this anti-aging approach is that these exceptionally powerful super-hormones can be altered by the foods you eat, and, in particular, by the Zone Diet.

Your body is a vast, complex biological Internet whose hormonal communication can be orchestrated with great precision by the Zone Diet. Hormones from melatonin to serotonin, from estrogen to testosterone, from cortisol to DHEA, can all be controlled if you are willing to treat food with the same respect as you would any prescription drug. Ultimately, hormonal miscommunication is the underlying cause of many conditions associated with "getting older" such as insomnia, wrinkles, dry and dull skin, waning sex drive, depression, chronic pain, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Using The Anti-Aging Zone as your guide, you can look and feel better that you ever imagined.

Millions of people like you are now facing the hard realities involved with getting older. Dr. Sears separates the hormonal hype from reality and gives you the necessary tools to add years to your life and improve your appearance. The Anti-Aging Zone is your passport to a longer and better life.

Enter the Anti-Aging Zone...you have the power to reverse aging beginning with your next meal.

Ask yourself these life-changing questions:

Why am I aging?

Is it too late to reverse aging?

What type of diet will increase my sexual energy and desire?

What is my biological Internet?

How do my hormones control aging?

Can I make my hormones communicate more effectively?

Do high-carbohydrate diets accelerate aging?

How does stress reduce brain longevity?

What are passing grades on my Anti-Aging Report Card?

Begin you Anti-Aging lifestyle today!

Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.

In reality, all you need is to eat naturally, like our ancestors did thousands of years ago. Eat greens, vegetables, berries, fruit, mushrooms, nuts. Eat lean meat (our ancestors hunted for healthy, lean animals). Eat egg whites, but avoid yolks. Most of the modern contaminants stick to fat molecules, and yolks are mostly fat. Plus it's the wrong type of fat, as chickens are not fed properly. Eat wild fish (but not too often; don't forget about pollutants).

That's it. Forget grains (and everything made from them). Forget potatoes and hard beans, soda and juices. Forget vegetable oils. All that junk is completely unnatural for humans to eat; our ancestors couldn't imagine that was edible. And that's why we have diseases that they didn't have.

Forget milk. Milk is only good for babies under 3 years old. Studies show that milk (and even yogurt) causes hyperinsulinemia (insulin "spikes" that lead to diabetes etc.) in adults.

Yes, his advice to take fish oil is great. Farm-raised animals are fed with junk food; consequently, they lack certain fatty acids that are vital for our health. Fish oil is a convenient way of restoring the balance. But Sears' fish oil is not the purest and cheapest on the market.

I'm a physiologist, and I've helped a number of people to change their eating habits. Those people have gotten rid of many problems, like obesity, allergies, asthma, arthritis, and excessive fatigue. And they don't complain that the food is not delicious enough. They learned to use their imagination a little bit and combine various healthy foods to create their nice and simple "recipes", and realized they enjoy their food even more than before.

5 out of 5 stars The book of chains.......2006-02-21

Here is the extremely simple advice on page 55: reduce your calorie intake and live longer. It is really simple, but that doesn't really help. A low calorie diet translates into the hated: no bread, no pizza, no cookies, no pies.

In hopes of making low calories interesting, Sears offers lots of ways to understand how your cell chemistry works. Maybe it will help you pick the right balance of diverse foods which can make a low calorie diet interesting. If you take this book seriously, you will learn a lot of biochemical cycles. For some reason, I find this stuff fascinating.

The causes of aging:
a) Excess insulin causes one to increase calorie consumption. Excess calories result in excess free radicals and premature cell deaths.
b) Excess insulin causes DNA damage and faster cell replication. Faster cell replication will produce more mutations, and associated dangers.
c) Excess glucose causes AGE (Advanced Glycosylated endproducts) and neural death in VMN (ventromedial nucleus). Together, these damage the hypothalmus, which eventually raises insulin levels.
d) Excess cortisol causes neural death in the hippocampus. Hippocampus failure causes chaos in the hormone system.

Protein plus glucose produce 'schiff base'. 'Shiff base' produces 'Amadori Adduct' which in turn produces AGE (advanced glycosylated endproducts. As mentioned above, AGE is a precursor to neural death in the VMN (ventromedial nucleus).

The Aerobic cycle, fundamental to life, converts glucose and oxygen into ATP (energy), carbon dioxide and free radicals. Free radicals cause early cell death,

Calorie consumption produces:
1. incrase cell turnover
2. inhibits production of eicosinoids (eicosinoids maintain cell-cell communication cells. Following eicosinoids around is the main focus of the book).
3. inhibits glucagon which would increase glucose levels -> increased cortisol production -> higher cortisol levels (faster aging)
4. increases insulin resistance -> incrased insulin level -> more stored fat -> increased plugging of cardiovascular system and reduced sex drive.

ATP + adenylate cyclase -> cAMP (secondary messenger for insulin) (insulin decreases levels of cAMP)

Environmental dangers -> CRH in hypothalums -> stimulates production of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) in the pituitary gland -> which produces chloresterol ester which reacts with cAMP to produce cholesterol -> prognenolene -> cortisol which decrease eicosanoids and CRH. Increase in cortisol is bad. Exercise and meditation reduce cortisol. Inhibition of glycagon increases cortisol levels.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the "Zone" books.......2006-02-06

Forget about low carb or no carb. So difficult to maintain, and really not a realistic way to live. Barry Sears incorporates his balanced diet with information on herbs, exercise and hormonal considerations.

The book is worthwhile for two sections; the appendix has a seven day diet for women and for men, including menus and recipes. And there is a prescription for staying in the "Zone" in exercise including how much cardio and how intense, and how much strength-training exercise to do. (20 minutes brks walking every day, 5-10 minutes of pushups, squats or weights every day.) As you progress you can add 45 mintues weights, 20 minutes flexibility (yoga, for example.)

The section on diabetes and aging of the brain is great, and there is a section on "Cheap Insurance" or what vitamin supplements are valuable for anyone.

Great book that seems to weather the fads of diet and health advice.

2 out of 5 stars Good information, terribly badly presented.......2002-03-12

I don't quite agree with the January 30 1999 review that this is the book Dr Sears should have written in the first place - I'd consider it a rough draft for that book; Dr Sears needs a competent editor!

This is the hardcover edition of the book that has been republished in paperback under the title of "The Age-free Zone". I think it is better to read "Enter the Zone" instead of or before reading this one. I have reservations about recommending this book because there are some obvious mis-statements that should have been caught by an editor, a great deal of boring repetition, and some very stretched analogies (e.g. pages 32 and 50). The persistent reader might reach a point where they are rewarded by more details of biochemical mechanisms than are given in the earlier book. The tables of food amounts are different from those in the other books and appear to be intermediate between the earlier version of "Enter the Zone" and the later amounts of "The top 100 zone foods".

4 out of 5 stars The best Zone book to read.......2001-06-29

This is Barry Sears' most technical book so far about the biological principles behind his Zone diet.

He describes biological markers of aging and mechanisms of aging. He also gives a short course in hormones, which are strongly involved in aging.

Sears explains his anti-aging pyramid, which consists of meditation, moderate exercise and his Zone diet. Unlike the US Department of Agriculture food pyramid, which put bread, grains and starches at the bottom, to be eaten in big amounts, Sears' pyramid puts these at the top, to be eaten very sparingly, to reduce insulin secretion.

Insulin is so important to his Zone diet that he devotes an entire chapter to its effects on the body. He also devotes a chapter to cortisol, a hormone important in stress reactions. Plus, he has a chapter about eicosanoids, which are hormones that are very important in coordinating important body functions.

Insulin strongly affects the output and mix of eicosanoids. Since maintaining the correct amount of insulin in one's body is fundamental to his Zone diet, Sears gives a list of 14 different signs that one has the right amount and kind of eicosanoids active in one's body.

These signs consist of such varied things as hair strength and texture, appetite for carbohydrates, length of time of appetite suppression between meals, sleeping time and grogginess on awakening.

If all of these 14 different signs have the right status, it's an indication that one has had the right amount of insulin in one's body recently.

Sears ranges widely enough to get into trouble. For example, he recommends Coleus forskohli as an anti-cancer agent. Actually, it's catnip for some kinds of cancer.

3 out of 5 stars Grow Young with HGH.......2007-10-09

The book is long winded and in essence probably simple enough for anyone to understand. That being said, it does not refer the reader to their private Physicians strongly enough. If you think you have a hormone deficiency, of any kind, a blood test would be in order. NOT buying what You think you need from a foreign pharmacy, as this could be potentially dangerous and or harmful to your body. While some attention is paid to foods and timing, there should be more emphasis placed on how to get your bodies own "factory" to increase production.

5 out of 5 stars This stuff is for real.......2006-09-10

My life has changed dramatically for the better since using the info in this book. At first I got a sub-lingual product but it didn't do anything. Then I got Secretagogue Gold and my God, what a change. I went from skinny to buffed. I used the Secretagogue Gold product for two months then quit because it is too expensive and too acidic for me. I have bought the powdered amino acids and I mix my own, like the examples in this book. I take the various vitamins and herbs at the same time and go to bed after a 3 hour water fast. Everybody is amazed, especially me. I'm so much stronger and healthier now. Don't believe all the hype about all these hgh products, go by this book. You'll be a buffed out stud at age 51 (my age) or whatever age you are. You'll laugh at the negative responders on this review page. Buy the book and read it. Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but needs more warnings and caveats.......2005-10-16

The book needs a revision - generally good, it is too much
on the pro-side and doesn't warn sufficiently against
taking too much and the possible cancer issues of too much
and why the natural turndown of GH by the body itself during
aging is an anti-cancer approach to permitting longer life
by preventing GH-caused cancer.

Nor does it adequately describe why it is important to
stay within range if you are low but not to supplement
beyond if you are normal or high.

Also, it is out-of-date with respect to suppliers as very
inexpensive injectable recombinant GH is now available from
major non-U.S. corporations that are as good or better than
U.S.-manufactured GH, for a fraction of the price.

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start..........2004-06-09

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I think both this book and HGH are great. This book is a great place to start getting some information on this issue. Perhaps the reason why hgh is not working for people is due to their use of synthetic hgh drugs that have side effects... Myself and some of my family members have been using a natural hgh called yf-8 that causes our body to naturally produce hgh. So, it is not that hgh is bad or doesn't work, it just has to work with your body.

This book offers great insight into the many benefits that hgh can do for our aging bodies. Get a copy and see for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars have you been following the hgh situation?.......2004-05-06

HGH precursors and all similar products have been proven useless, but Klatz has made his money, so no problem. Very short exercise sessions of high intensity will help your body create the proper 'mix' of hormones..... Go to your health club and find a weight on the leg press machine that you can do slow reps on for one minute. At the end of the one set, you should find it impossible to move the weight,(and feel horrible :-). Do a similar set of of seated chest press and seated row. YOU'RE DONE! You can do more if you want, according to what results you're going for, but a full effort on these three sets will get your hormones going. Actually, the leg press -alone- will get everything going quite well. Say no to drugs.

    Book Description

This landmark book focuses on the methodology used to measure human biological age. Although functional decline appears to be an inevitable and inescapable consequence of aging, there are often considerable differences between individuals with respect to the rate and extent of this decline. Individuals may be young or old in relation to their number of years. As a result, age-related disease or age-related death may occur at different chronological ages. It follows that the true or practically relevant age of an individual is not adequately defined by the time that has elapsed since birth; rather, it is expressed as "biological age"-a figure reflecting the individual's progressive inability to respond adaptively to an environmental stress that leads to a decreased viability and increased vulnerability to death. This book features contributions from leading investigators in the field and represents a comprehensive worldwide collection of the most recent research on estimating human biological age. Tests described in the book can be used to monitor the effects of any interventional therapy, including drug treatment, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle modification.

      5 out of 5 stars A fascinating introduction to the anti-aging research........2005-01-17

"Stealing Time, The New Science of Aging" is a captivating, easy-to-read and understand introduction to the field of anti-aging. His language is highly descriptive--he shows you, not tells you. I felt transported onto a field trip led by science journalist and television producer, Fred Warshofsky, who took me to the labs of top longevity researchers and delved into their work. I felt I was on a field trip for good reason: this is the companion book to the PBS documentary of the same name. I didn't see the documentary, but this book is complete in and of itself. Sprinkled through the book are interesting discussions and questions Warshofsky goes on to answer. For example, why are men able to father children at any age, whereas women go through menopause? Why are elderly folks revered in pre-industrial tribal societies, but not in the United States? The book, published in 1999, provides a great overview of the important anti-aging research up though the end of the 20th century.

Below are the eight chapter headings, along with some commentary and take-home points:

      1. The Aging Paradox - Why are the people who make it past 85 a generally hardy and healthy group? Warshofsky cites a 1995 study which found "that medical expenditures for the last two years of life average $22,600 for people who die at seventy, but just $8300 for people who live to be one hundred."

      2. Other Species - This chapter contains many interesting discussions of the longevity of many species, including mice who may live to age four, to the giant tortoise who can live to be well over 100, the latter with showing signs aging. An especially fascinating study was zoologist Steven Austad's study of opossums. Why do opossums on an island off the coast of Georgia age more slowly and live 50 percent longer than their mainland cousins? (See page 64.)

      3. The Genetics of Aging - Genetics can be complicated, but Warshofsky simplifies them enough so the educated layperson can understand the research in this field. One interesting study discussed is Michael Rose's work on fruit flies, which mate at about 14 days and typically live for a month. For generation after generation of fruit flies, Rose only let eggs hatch from the oldest flies. The generation of flies visited by the author mated up to 50 days and lived for up to 5 months, giving hope that extending life is possible.

      4. Extending Life - Caloric restriction is examined in depth in this chapter, which includes an interview with Dr. Roy Walford, then age 74 and on nutritionally dense caloric diet expecting to extend his lifespan by 15 to 20 years. Although Walford subsequently died at age 79 of ALS, there is still plenty of evidence that nutritionally dense caloric restriction has the potential to significantly increase longevity.

      5. Exercise and Hormones - If you just read one chapter, read this one! Cardiovascular and strength training physical activity are important for staying healthy and reversing part of the aging process. Among the exercise researchers Warshofsky interviews is Dr. Miriam Nelson at Tufts University, who found that people can build muscle and increase their strength and activities of daily living even in their 80s and 90s. Also, this chapter discusses human growth hormone (HGH) which was found to improve tissue repair, bone strength and brain function among other things. It's been found that people can increase their HGH naturally through physical activity.

      6. Mastering the Mind - People (and rats) who are successful at aging keep their minds mentally challenged.

      7. Alzheimers and the Chemistry of the Aging Brain - This chapter briefly explores theories of dementia, and discusses the Nun's study. The Nun's study found that the more highly educated nuns with bachelor's degrees or higher live about four years longer than the less highly educated sisters, with better mental and physical functioning. One caveat about this chapter: About half the chapter discusses estrogen, found to help improve memory in menopausal women, only in glowing terms. Several years after publication of this book, the National Institutes of Health halted their estrogen replacement due to increased risk of stroke and lack of improvement in heart disease. The downside of estrogen replacement therapy, including increased risk of breast cancer is not discussed.

      8. Tomorrow - This brief chapter covers some odds and ends not discussed in other chapters, such as that people who live to be 100 tend to have strong, mentally tough personalities along with deep spiritual beliefs.

Some take home points for living longer and healthier lives emerge from the research in this book:

      * Stay physically active, with regular cardiovascular exercise and strength training. In fact, women who exercise four hours a week reduce their risk of breast cancer by more than one third.
      * Eat a healthy diet which includes at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
      * Stay mentally active.
      * Reduce stress.

Overall, if you want to learn about anti-aging and longevity, this book is a great place to begin.

        Book Description

Despite our deep interest in mortality, little is known about why some individuals live to middle age and others to extreme old age. Life span, mortality, and aging present some of the most profound mysteries in biology. In Longevity, James Carey draws on unprecedented data to develop a biological and demographic framework for identifying the key factors that govern aging, life span, and mortality in humans and other animals.

Carey presents the results of a monumental, twelve-year, National Institute on Aging-funded research project on the determinants of longevity using data from the life tables of five million Mediterranean fruit flies, the most comprehensive set of life table studies ever on the mortality dynamics of a single species. He interprets the fruit fly data within the context of human aging and the aging process in general to identify the determinants of mortality. Three key themes emerge: the absence of species-specific life span limits, the context-specific nature of the mortality rate, and biodemographic linkages between longevity and reproduction.

A powerful foundation for the emerging field of biodemography and a rich framework for considering the future of human life span, Longevity will be an indispensable resource for readers from a range of fields including population biology, demography, gerontology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and medical research.

For the last 20 years, Loretta LaRoche has been delighting readers, audiences, and PBS television viewers with her wacky and wise insights about life, love, and the insanity of the modern world. Now, in her most deeply personal book yet, Loretta addresses the most exciting challenge that we all face—one that she now finds herself facing every day: How do we age well? And can humor, dignity, honesty, wisdom, and other virtues ease the path?
Our society is youth obsessed: Beauty products, special exercises, designer vitamins, plastic surgery, and certain medications are promoted as “the” ways to enhance life. While these formulas may have some merit, they’re not enough to prepare us to have a rich, authentic life filled with passion and juiciness. Why do we wait until we’re almost dead before we focus on how to age well? Every school system in the country should be preparing us for the inevitable process of aging and how to do it well. Our parents, our schools, and the media should all be teaching us that aging is a process that begins at birth . . . not something to be feared and avoided. Those who continue to be hardy and live long and healthy lives understand that the real path to vitality requires connection, playfulness, flexibility, grace, tenacity, resiliency, curiosity, learning, and good humor.
With her trademark humor and practical wisdom, Loretta tackles how to live a long, healthy, juicy life—using herself and many of her friends and mentors as metaphors. Filled with practical advice, lifestyle skills, wisdom, and spirituality, Kick Up Your Heels . . . is a mental health spa that will inspire you and your family to live with joy, harmony, and peace while you still have the time!

Want to live to 120? Then pick up a copy of Renewal: The Anti-Aging Revolution by Timothy J. Smith M.D., and start making diet and lifestyle changes today. In Renewal, Dr. Smith, a practicing physician with more than 25 years of experience in a broad range of disciplines, including alternative, nutritional, and Chinese medicine, provides specific instructions to keep your body from wearing out prematurely or succumbing to the ravages of degenerative disease.

Renewal incorporates the latest longevity research and is packed with terrific information that is a pleasure to read. You'll learn how and why we age and, more important, how to reverse heart disease, destroy cancer cells, erase visible signs of aging, boost brain power, attack aging at the cellular level, and extend your life span by protecting healthy cells and repairing or replacing damaged or dead ones. This challenging program has three components: an anti-aging diet (a low-fat, vegan eating plan), supplement program (which includes sections on phytochemicals, fiber, and herbs like ginkgo, garlic, and ginseng), and exercise program. Renewal also contains a 14-day meal plan with recipes and chapters on anti-aging hormones and "smart pills." Follow Dr. Smith's advice and you'll keep each of your body's 100 trillion cells humming for decades to come. --Ellen Albertson

          4 out of 5 stars A good starting point.......2005-09-03

This book, and subsequently the desire to research additional sources, has made a remarkable difference to the three people in my family.
One reviewer wrote that "any serious book on rejuvenation would mention phosphatidylcholine". Of course phosphatidylcholine is mentioned, along with dosage suggestions.
The reviewer may not know that phosphatidylcholine is known as lecithin, although lecithin is also a term loosely applied to describe a combination of phosphatidylcholine with other phospholipids.
As a satisfied customer and user of Smith's methodology I recommend this book.

          2 out of 5 stars Not a gerontologist.......2004-10-11

His specialty is Obstetrics & Gynecology. I felt it is a "me too" book on the topic. LEF.org has much more information and is more authoritive than Dr. Smith in my opinion and LEF is free.

I would think any serious book on rejuvenation would mention phosphatidylcholine which is in all cells. Rats suplemented with it lived 35% longer than the control group and it wasn't administered until the rats were in such serious decline that they could no longer reproduce. After phosphatidylcholine they had full size litters. The only phospholipid I saw referenced in his book was phosphatidylserine.

Borrow it from the library before you decide to buy it. I'm glad I did.

This book is readable and interesting, with some expected advice and a few surprising ones. Especially interesting are his arguments against consuming all forms of animal-derived food including milk and his case against red wine.

However, anyone who knows anything about traditional Chinese medicine will see that Dr Smith can't be a serious practitioner or even a believer of TCM. Most TCM tonics contain animal parts. One of the most highly prized Chinese/Tibetan "herb" is cordyceps sinensis.

Medicinal wines are also a very important part of Chinese medicine. Chinese physicians believe that alcohol clears the body's channels and moves the qi. Delivered with certain herb combinations, alcohol enhances the therapeutic effects.

Ginseng is not a miracle herb. For the wrong body type, it can cause more harm than good. Osteoporosis is not well-documented in China. It doesn't mean it does not exist. In fact, rickets used to be quite common until school children were encouraged to drink milk.

There are a lot of other debatable points. Suffice to say that while this book makes an interesting read, one shouldn't take it too seriously.

Indeed, the rumors of Dr. Smith's death have been much exaggerated; he's been my primary care doc. for nearly twenty years now, ten spent in the Bay Area and seven in the Midwest. His programs can be expensive for those seeking wellness on limited means, especially should they be lucky enough to have health insurance -- our insane health care system often paying for pharmaceuticals that do more harm than good, but not for the supplements he more sensibly recommends. That said, *anyone* seeking solid advice on taking charge of her health can sift for the invaluable nuggets here, and if necessary, pass over anything that strikes her as "religious glow," to quote a later reviewer. Dr. Smith has another book in the works, but it may be some time before it emerges, given the demands of his clinical practice and growing family.
