Book Description
Comprehensive coverage of classical and modern methods of biostatistics
Biostatistical Methods focuses on the assessment of risks and relative risks on the basis of clinical investigations. It develops basic concepts and derives biostatistical methods through both the application of classical mathematical statistical tools and more modern likelihood-based theories.
The first half of the book presents methods for the analysis of single and multiple 2x2 tables for cross-sectional, prospective, and retrospective (case-control) sampling, with and without matching using fixed and two-stage random effects models. The text then moves on to present a more modern likelihood- or model-based approach, which includes unconditional and conditional logistic regression; the analysis of count data and the Poisson regression model; and the analysis of event time data, including the proportional hazards and multiplicative intensity models. The book contains a technical appendix that presents the core mathematical statistical theory used for the development of classical and modern statistical methods. Biostatistical Methods: The Assessment of Relative Risks:
* Presents modern biostatistical methods that are generalizations of the classical methods discussed
* Emphasizes derivations, not just cookbook methods
* Provides copious reference citations for further reading
* Includes extensive problem sets
* Employs case studies to illustrate application of methods
* Illustrates all methods using the Statistical Analysis System(r) (SAS)
Supplemented with numerous graphs, charts, and tables as well as a Web site for larger data sets and exercises, Biostatistical Methods: The Assessment of Relative Risks is an excellent guide for graduate-level students in biostatistics and an invaluable reference for biostatisticians, applied statisticians, and epidemiologists.
Customer Reviews:
modern coverage emphasizing relative risk.......2000-09-20
John Lachin is Professor and Director of the graduate program in biostatistics at George Washington University. The book is intended as a first advanced course for students in that program. The book emphasizes methods for problems in biostatistics. To Lachin this means an emphasis on binary, categorical and survival data that relate to the assessment of risk and relative risk through clinical research. Consequently much of the standard parametric and nonparametric modeling of continuous response data is not considered.
A variety of methods are covered on a number of subjects. The first half of the book deals with classical approaches to single and multiple 2x2 contigency tables used in cross-sectional, prospective and case-control studies. In the second half, the more modern likelihood or model-based approach is presented. Technical mathematical details are covered in the appendix which is referenced throughout the text. The appendix deals with statistical theory (stochastic convergence results and other theory) but does not provide rigorous proofs of the theorems. Real probelms are presented and analyses are illustrated using procedures in SAS.
In the model-based sections, topics include logistic regression, Poisson regression, proportional hazard and multiplicative intensity models. The book is modern, well written, provides a good list of references, has extensive problem sets at the end of the chapters and employs case studies to illustrate the application of the methods. It is not a book for beginners. It is a great reference source for biostatisticians and epidemiologists as well as a fine text for a graduate-level course in biostatistics.

An introduction to classical biostatistical methods in epidemiology
Biostatistical Methods in Epidemiology provides an introduction to a wide range of methods used to analyze epidemiologic data, with a focus on nonregression techniques. The text includes an extensive discussion of measurement issues in epidemiology, especially confounding. Maximum likelihood, Mantel-Haenszel, and weighted least squares methods are presented for the analysis of closed cohort and case-control data. Kaplan-Meier and Poisson methods are described for the analysis of censored survival data. A justification for using odds ratio methods in case-control studies is provided. Standardization of rates is discussed and the construction of ordinary, multiple decrement and cause-deleted life tables is outlined. Sample size formulas are given for a range of epidemiologic study designs. The text ends with a brief overview of logistic and Cox regression. Other highlights include:
- Many worked examples based on actual data
- Discussion of exact methods
- Recommendations for preferred methods
- Extensive appendices and references
Biostatistical Methods in Epidemiology provides an excellent introduction to the subject for students, while also serving as a comprehensive reference for epidemiologists and other health professionals.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting and difficult book.......2005-01-09
This was a difficult book for me to read and review and I think it would be tough to write as well. Biostatistics is taught generally devoid of its epidemiological context but this book tries to break a new ground and tries to show use of biostatistics in derivations of epidemiology measures. This makes the book theoritical which is what I was looking for. It succesfully breaks a new ground in some places particularly on on confounding where author summarizes recent literature neatly. However, other chapters require knowledge of Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods which are covered in an intermediate biostatistic texts like Larsen and Marx. This book is interesting because its the only book which I have found which covers the ML methods for odds ratio but this is the only book which covers them. Disappointingly, the author skips derivations and reaches straight to the results which is frustating. Since this is textbook for advanced students and author assumes knowledge of ML methods, eschewing details and derivations is sad.

Data Analysis Using Regression and Multilevel/Hierarchical Models
ASIN: 0195120256 |
Book Description
Statistical analysis typically involves applying theoretically generated techniques to the description and interpretation of collected data. In this text, theory, application and interpretation are combined to present the entire biostatistical process for a series of elementary and intermediate analytic methods. The theoretical basis for each method is discussed with a minimum of mathematics and is applied to a research data example using a computer system called S-PLUS. This system produces concrete numerical results and increases one's understanding of the fundamental concepts and methodology of statistical analysis. Combining statistical logic, data and computer tools, the author explores such topics as random number generation, general linear models, estimation, analysis of tabular data, analysis of variance and survival analysis. The end result is a clear and complete explanation of the way statistical methods can help one gain an understanding of collected data. Modern Applied Biostatistical Methods is unlike other statistical texts, which usually deal either with theory or with applications. It integrates the two elements into a single presentation of theoretical background, data, interpretation, graphics, and implementation. This all-around approach will be particularly helpful to students in various biostatistics and advanced epidemiology courses, and will interest all researchers involved in biomedical data analysis. This text is not a computer manual, even though it makes extensive use of computer language to describe and illustrate applied statistical techniques. This makes the details of the statistical process readily accessible, providing insight into how and why a statistical method identifies the properties of sampled data. The first chapter gives a simple overview of the S-PLUS language. The subsequent chapters use this valuable statistical tool to present a variety of analytic approaches.

Health & Numbers
A Problems-Based Introduction to Biostatistics
Second Edition
Chap T. Le, Ph.D.
Newly revised and updated, Health and Numbers, Second Edition serves as a concise introduction to basic statistical concepts and reasoning at a level suitable for a broad spectrum of students and professionals in medicine and allied health fields. This user-friendly resource uses real-life examples with real data to emphasize fundamental biostatistical concepts.
The book treats fundamental statistical methods with a practical, problems-based approach. It covers the nuts and bolts of elementary applied statistics for those who have no prior knowledge and experience in statistics. It provides an overview of basic ideas on standardization and rates and graphical techniques, offers more exercises than did the first edition, and features Microsoft® Excel and SAS samples, and new chapters on comparisons of means and proportions, as well as regression and correlation techniques. Health and Numbers, Second Edition strikes a balance between principles and methods of calculation that is particularly useful for students in medicine and health-related fields who are struggling with required courses in biostatistics.
Customer Reviews:
Warning: Text contains many errors.......2007-02-17
+ Note: This review was originally written for another book from this author, but touches on my experience with this text as well.
It is mind-boggling how one can have so many mistakes in a textbook like this. This book was required for our Biostatistics II class, and I am really displeased by all of the mistakes. What is the worst offense is that some of the answers for test questions are wrong. For example, the one way ANOVA problem 7.21 has the wrong F-statistic: the wrong answer. Others in the class have complained about this text as well. This is simply amazing to me, and leaves me not trusting much of the text in this book.
His other book "Health and Numbers" is just as terrible; the professor that used that book for class made a list of the mistakes they found, and us students in that class found many more along the way. I ran into another statistics book that takes all of the procedures step-by-step and really made it simple for me. This book, and his other are not recommended.
