Customer Reviews:
it's still the ultimate toxicology book.......2007-09-09
there is not that much to say, really. Casarett & Doull's Tox book has been THE toxicology textbook for the past years. This edition has a few additions and changes, but not that many, so older editions are still worthwhile. However, anyone in the environmental science field, toxicology, carcinogenesis or related subjects, you should have this as a reference book. period.
Hopeless.......2007-06-12
As a doctoral graduate in toxicology and now a practicing preclinical toxicologist for several years, I rate this book not only as "poor", but poorer with each new edition.
Consider Goodman & Gilman's Pharmacology. Like C&D, it is a text with nearly as many authors as chapters, and covers diverse subject material. UNlike G&G, though, Casarett & Doull's painfully lacks the editorial wisdom, guidance, and "tie-together" of the exceedingly disparate chapters. As a result, there is a lot of overlap, and a lot of gaps.
In case you graduate students haven't figured it out, this book is essentially the manual for the ABT cert exam. In my opinion, that is the only thing keeping it in print. Otherwise most of us in practice would have a book that covers chapter 6, and then separate references for our area of work. As a preclinical toxicologist, for example, I couldn't give two hoots in hell about air pollution or toxic effects of plants.
If you can only buy 1 toxicology reference, make it this one.......2004-08-25
I found this to be an outstanding and thorough treatment of the entire gamut of toxicology. The book is well organized, with a very logical sequence of chapters. Each chapter is authored by recognized experts in the various subspecialties of toxicology, such as neurotoxicology. The principles and model systems of each specialty are discussed in detail. This text contains no fluff. I recommend it for graduate level students and above, though ambitious undergraduates may find it useful as well. My only suggestions for improvement would be updated figures and a glossary of terms. I sometimes found that authors of the earlier chapters would use terms which were not defined until later chapters. Overall, this is an excellent reference--well worth the price.
errors in the book.......2004-04-27
That is a good book for the beginner of toxicologist. However, many existed errors may mislead and confuse the beginners. So I recommend that we'd wait for next edition.
Many errors.......2004-04-27
That is a really good book for the beginer of toxicologist. However, there are many errors existed and those errors could mislead and confuse the beginer. I think that we'd better wait for next editions.

Introduction to Environmental Forensics
ASIN: 0849320585 |
Book Description
Offering state-of-the-art techniques for both attorneys and environmental scientists, Environmental Forensics: Principles and Applications discusses non-chemical methods such as corrosion modeling, inventory reconciliation, and aerial photography interpretation. The book also covers chemical fingerprinting used to identify the origin and age of a contaminant release- relevant techniques include the use of radioactive isotope analysis, degradation modeling based on half-lives, and fuel additives such as MTBE. Environmental Forensics provides case study examples of environmental trial exhibits. It covers misused techniques that can bias the scientific validity of a trial exhibit, such as scale exaggeration, use of statistical manipulation, data contouring, and selective presentation. Detailed information is provided for identifying and interpreting those portions of environmental reports that are "target rich" sources of scientific biases. These include the identification of false positive, false negative and the intentional manipulation of environmental data that occurs primarily in the sample collection process.
Customer Reviews:
Hydrogeologist finds this book lacking in many respects........2004-11-25
The good points for this book are the scope of the discussion; Most of Chapter 3, Identification of Biased Environmental Data; and, the color plates. However, there are some notable errors in the book and strong statements that deserve quite obvious and important caveats. There is no discussion of the importance of effective porosity. Using the wrong porosity value is a common error used to bias analyses of contaminant transport velocity. There are errors such as stating that organic carbon is associated with clay content, which is completely wrong in many parts of the country where clay residuum dominates. Clay minerals have no carbon content themselves, but may be associated with organic materials in alluvial settings. There are many such problems with this book and I am hesitant to offer it to those learning the practice because of all the corrections I'd need to make.
Excellent Book!.......2001-11-29
I find myself referring to this book on a daily basis.
A must have for anyone in the Environmental Industry.
Some mistakes make the book hard to believe.......2001-01-18
It may be that the book is a good work, but some mistakes make it hard to believe. As a simple but illustrative example, on page 315 the author says that some synonyms of carbon tetrachloride (formula CCl4) are "carbon disulphide, carbon disulfide" and some others that are not, in any way, related to carbon tetrachloride but to other chemical (formula CS2). If this so obvious mistake is found, how many others, not so obvious might be in the book?
Environmental Forensics: Principles and Applications.......1999-11-29
This is a tremendous, one of a kind book for environmental consultants and environmental attorneys. Dr. Morrison provides real world case studies and ideas concerning identifying the source and age of contaminants that are so often at issue in environmental cases dealing with subsurface contamination. The book is heavily referenced and includes numeous figures and tables which complement the text. This is the only book on this new and emerging science and I would recommend it to anyone practicing in this field.
Book Description
The largest contribution to radiation exposure to the population as a whole arises from diagnostic X-rays. Protecting the patient from radiation is a major aim of modern health policy, and an understanding of the relationship between radiation dose and image quality is of pivotal importance in optimising medical diagnostic radiology. In this volume the data provided for exploring these concerns are partly based on X-ray spectra, measured on diagnostic X-ray tube assemblies, and are supplemented by the results of measurements on phantoms and simulation calculations. The book also features a CD-ROM containing a comprehensive database in the form of Excel files: X-ray spectra for conventional diagnostics and mammography, interaction coefficients of the most important elements, compounds and mixtures, characteristics of the primary and the imaging radiation field, data from various anti-scatter grids, dosimetric data, which are needed for the evaluation of patient dose, and further helpful information.

Book Description
Antidotes provides up-to-date information on the development and clinical use of antidotes, their proposed mechanism of action, toxicity, availability and practical aspects of their clinical use. The antidotes discussed are primarily those either in current use, or under consideration or development. Some other compounds of mainly historical interest are also mentioned where appropriate. It contains information on the antidotal treatment of poisoning with compounds encountered not only in Western Europe, North America and Australia, but also developing countries. It covers source, shelf-life and instances where antidote administration complicates or compromises laboratory analyses. There is no other single, published work that looks generally at antidotes, and it will prove invaluable to researchers, staff in poison information centers and A&E wards, drug information pharmacists, medical toxicologists and veterinarians. It will also be useful reading for medical students, trainee pharmacists, emergency physicians, ambulance staff and anesthetists.
