Book Description
Common Surgical Diseases: An Algorithmic Approach to Problem
Solving presents commonly encountered problems to medical students and residents in a concise manner using an algorithm approach. Small enough to fit in a lab coat pocket, the book provides easy access for residents before teaching rounds, lectures, etc. The algorithm approach lends itself to rapid learning and understanding of commonly encountered problems. This is a must for all students entering a surgical clerkship as well as for every surgical resident.
Customer Reviews:
You need this study guide.......2006-12-29
It condenses the information into what you really need. It is great for preparation for tests. I used this instead of the text book. With this I received an A in my Microbiology class.
Book Description
This concise, problem-based textbook covers 91 of the most common infectious diseases, using case studies to promote interactive learning and to build a foundation of knowledge for clinical practice. It presents an overview of how infectious diseases affect a particular organ system. Then, it provides clinical case scenarios, differential diagnosis tables, and succinct explanations of the infectious process, with treatment options and outcomes. Crisp, full-color images and USMLE-style practice questions round out the text.

Worth every cent.......2007-06-14
As a student preparing for Step 1 of the medical boards this is a must read, no-brainer, hands down. The systems based approach style prepares you for the complexity that the USMLE and the COMLEX will test. The authors have done a wonderful job providing interdisciplinary insight to make the hard diagnosis. The piece is well written and illustrated to provide the most 'high yield' information needed to CRUSH the boards. After reading this book, I felt very comfortable with microbiology (I had ZERO microbiology background and still walked away refreshed). From soup to nuts this is the best money invested for the BUGS of medicine!
This was my Micro Professor.......2006-06-30
Dr. Nath has finally decided to publish the Microbiology Step 1 review that he gave his students for years. His review, in addition to First Aid were the ONLY sources I used to review Micro for Step 1 and I aced that portion of the exam.
If you want to destroy Step 1, this should be your Micro source.
Looks like the best Micro text out there!.......2006-06-10
I wish I had more than three days until Step 1 so I could read this great book cover to cover. The layout is great including the appendices that cover general Micro tests and concepts. While it doesn't have the goofy mnemonics of ...Ridiculously Simple, it is MUCH more Boards focused.
The photos of cultures, tests and infections; introductory clinical cases; differential diagnoses; and thorough descriptions of the pathophysiology are second to none. I borrowed a preview copy from my Micro Prof and don't want to give it up! :-)

Book Description
The activated sludge process is the most versatile, commonly used wastewater treatment system in North America; however, many activated sludge processes frequently experience operational problems related to poor compaction or settleability of secondary solids and loss of secondary solids from the clarifier. Eschewing the technical jargon and copious chemical equations found in the majority of wastewater studies,
Settleability Problems and Loss of Solids in the Activated Sludge Process speaks directly to plant operators, showing them how to identify and solve common problems and achieve maximum efficiency.
Michael H. Gerardi’s hands-on guide addresses the most common plant operational problems, such as increased costs, loss of treatment efficiency, and permit violations. Using numerous tables and illustrations, Settleability Problems provides microscopic and analytical techniques for troubleshooting and identifying the conditions responsible for settleability problems and loss of solids. It includes pictures of wet mounts and smears of acceptable and unacceptable microscopic conditions of the activated sludge and presents corrective measures for operational problems. Chapters include:
- Undesired Filamentous Growth
- Nutrient-Deficient Floc Particles
- Denitrification
- Slug Discharge of Soluble cBOD
- Viscous Bulking or Zoogloeal Growth
- Production and Accumulation of Foam and Scum
Volume II in the series, Settleability Problems will prove to be of unparalleled value to wastewater treatment plant operators as well as students of wastewater microbiology.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Medical Laboratory Technologists.......2002-02-24
I am a Medical Technologist who is retraining in the microbiology lab. This book has been a lifesaver for me. It's a concise and practical review. Just the right amount of information. It's fairly easy to read and includes many practical lab procedures as well as theory.
Also the information is up-to-date. I highly recommend this book to hospital/medical lab people.
Finally a micro text that makes sense.......2001-02-07
This text puts all the information from the each chapter into concise, easy to follow flow charts and tables. At the end of each chapter are study questions, standard lab procedures, and descriptions of media used in the micro lab, what is in the media, and why it is in it. The specimen flow charts were very heplful. For each common specimens received in the lab, the flow chart will tell you step by step what to do to ID the organism based on Gram stain, biochemical reactions, colony morphology, etc. It was nice to have all that info in one place instead of having to turn back and forth through several chapters. Wonderful text for anyone starting out working in a micro lab.
