Hodge-Podge.......2005-01-31
You would think that a book whose title includes the words "Digital Photography Expert" and the "definitive guide for serious digital photographers" would give you hints about using digital cameras. This book doesn't do that.
It has a few good points. The typography is excellent with plenty of white space and clean layout. The pictures are good. And several times the author uses a series of pictures to build up to the best picture of a subject, just as a photographer in the field might develop his vision of a subject.
Now the bad points. The book is thrown together by mixing a lot of different learning points without relationship to each other and treating them in a superficial manner. It's as if no one ever told the author about making an outline of his teaching points before starting to actually write.
Then there is the approach to digital, or rather a lack of it. One would expect that this book would suggest a way that the digital aspects of photography could be used to enhance the taking of nature and landscape photographs. Instead the author completely ignores the nature of digital cameras. For example one of the most important devices a digital camera may contain is a histogram to allow you to adjust exposure. (A histogram is graphic representation showing the distribution of light values in a picture.) A good book would tell you how to use the histogram. The author's only reference to a histogram is to tell you that shots of the sea can be tricky and one should check the histogram. In the glossary, the author does explain what a histogram is in language similar to the parenthetical expression used a few sentences earlier in this paragraph but he never tells you how to use the histogram.
But wait. There's more. Often he perpetuates myths that are just wrong, or at least require more information to be useful. For example he says that telephoto lenses have less depth of field then wide angle lenses, which is not true if the image size of a subject on the sensor is the same, or that split neutral density filters don't work with telephoto lenses. And the essential nature photography skills he leaves out are legion. There is no mention of the use of flash or any of the so-called "rules" of composition.
I can't suggest a single book that will provide you detailed information on both landscape and nature photography and digital photography. However for a comprehensive, well-organized approach to nature photography nothing beats John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" even though he doesn't mention digital. To see how to capitalize on digital cameras' characteristics I recommend "Shooting Digital" by Mikkel Aaland. And if you are interested in wildlife photography, which Freeman purports to explain, but ends up ignoring, you could do a lot worse than reading the late Bill Silliker, Jr.'s "Master Guide for Wildlife Photographers."
Don't waste much time with "Digital Photography Expert Nature and Landscape Photography"
Pretty pictures only - very little information.......2004-09-13
I'm not sure how this book (and author) can state that this is the "Definitive guide for serious digital photographers". If I went on useful content it would only rate 1 star (the lowest rating allowed) but I liked some of the pictures, so I was generous and gave the book 2 stars..
Here's a sample of what "Serious Digital Photographers" will find interesting about this book. The terms "f-stop" and "shutter speed" are mentioned 4 times each in this book. Could it be that these aren't things that serious digital photographers care about? Perhaps they just aren't important when it comes to taking landscape photos. Oh well, the author probably thought we wanted to just look at his pictures instead of taking our own.
Another of the author's valuable suggestions include taking pictures in the morning or at twilight for more interesting light effects. I'm sure rare nuggets like this are sure to come as a big surprise to photographers everywhere. Do yourself a favor and skip this book. Try John Shaw's landscape photography if you want a much better book.

useful but only for engineers.......2007-09-13
This book is only a book about psychology of technical staff. For this reason, maintenance managers should read this book without fail. But I do not recommend the book for non-native speaker because it's language is very heavy to comprehend. I should say that some section of the book is very complex.
Effectively Managing Maintenance Errors.......2006-05-11
The book "Managing Maintenance Error: A Practical Guide" is an excellent and enlightening book on avoiding and managing maintenance errors. James Reason is a well known authority on human factor issues and his seminal work entitled "Human Error" (1990) is widely used by practitioners that work in various hazardous industries.
Maintenance Error management seeks to prevent errors from occurring and eliminate or mitigate the bad effects of errors. The maintenance engineering industry should always strive towards ensuring that errors do not arise in the first place. However, it will never be possible to eliminate errors entirely. Therefore maintenance organisations should aim to manage errors.
Reason refers to the two components of error management namely error containment and error reduction. To prevent errors from occurring, it is necessary to predict where they are most likely to occur and then to put in place preventative measures. Within a maintenance organisation, data on errors, incidents and accidents should be captured with a Safety Management System, which should provide mechanisms for identifying potential weak spots and error-prone activities or situations. Output from this should guide local training, company procedures, the introduction of new defences, or the modification of existing defences.
Ultimately, maintenance organisations have to compromise between implementing measures to prevent, reduce or detect errors, and making a profit.
One of the things likely to be most effective in preventing error is to make sure that maintenance personnel follow procedures. This can be effected by ensuring that the procedures are correct and usable, that the means of presentation of the information is user friendly and appropriate to the task and context, that engineers are encouraged to follow procedures and not to cut corners.
This is a well written book in simple plain English that should make it easy to follow and understand. The book is very useful for people who work in the maintenance industry.
Well written and practical guide.......2003-11-12
This book is well written with lots of documented examples to support the authors views. Its a ralatively easy read and is laid out in a logical format. I recommend this book to anyone in the maintenance field, and not just avaiation maintenance, who wishes to understand why errors are committed and who like to develop a plan to identify and reduce their occurance.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and Comprehensive Introductory and Reference Book.......2003-02-28
As a landscape professional and part-time rose nurseryman I find this book the most generally useful and comprehensive (if not as effectively organized) of all the books I have purchased and/ or read regarding the subject. It packs the most information into the smallest footprint (meaning I carry it with me regularly) and gives a broad and sound overview of all things rose related including: types of roses, the general habits and qualities of each (good and bad), selecting, planting, maintenance, feeding, spraying, and other care among them. It's a great general reference and I recommend it to many of my clients that inquire and express an interest in learning about roses. For those interested in expanding their knowledge further in this area there are a number of references cited and available for further exploration.
As to it being British based I didn't find this at all to be an issue; use common sense to make adjustments for the difference between climes. In fact Britain is in the same USDA zones as most of the Western US, zones 8 & 9, which is whereI am based.
I can't say the specific rose listings were in themselves terribly helpful since selection and availability will vary from locale to locale and year to year, but the pictures are always nice to look at just the same. (It's more helpful for my business to learn what's available through existing channels and find which of these best fits the criteria desired; most good growers/ sellers will include sound performers in the core areas.)
Happy Gardening!
Basic Primer of Limited Use.......2000-03-25
I found this book to be a decent basic primer on the differnet types of roses, such as hybrid tea, floribunda, etc. After that, however, the book was of limited use. Most of the information is based on the assumption that the reader lives in England. The climate maps, planting schedules, etc only guide the gardener growing roses in England, and because I live in California the book did not help me make decisions about what types to buy and when to plant, prune, etc. So, if you live outside of England, search for a book that will provide better information on growing roses in your geographic area.
Well organized presentation with detailed information.......1998-10-27
The New Rose Expert divides roses by hybrid tea, floribunda, patio, miniature, ground cover, climber & rambler and shrub with small labels at the bottom of each category for quick location and each rose is presented with beautiful photo, general description, and the specifics: blooms, foiliage, health, and awards for efficient comparisons. In depth coverage of planting, care and propagation with pointers for the novus are included. I especially liked the guides to selection of roses depending on the fragrance, color and proposed use (ground cover, climber, etc). An excellent primer!

Book Description
In the past few decades, the field of transportation has changed dramatically. Deregulation and greater reliance on markets and the private sector has helped to reconfigure the transport industries, while the rise of intermodal goods and global commerce has produced efficiencies of operation and a greater interdependence among transport modes. In addition, security issues have moved to the forefront as officials struggle with the challenge of protecting the vast transportation system while maintaining its operational efficiencies and effectiveness. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the Handbook of Transportation Policy and Administration addresses the changes facing the field of transportation. Organized into five sections, it describes and analyzes major modes of transportation and components of the contemporary transportation system. Later chapters consider policy and administration and focus on managing transportation systems and assets. The final section covers security and protection of transportation systems. The handbook explores continuing development in the US and other nations, with an emphasis on the challenges created by technological change, globalization of the world economy, and the threat of terrorism. It examines the current state of major modes of transportation (air, rail, highways, waterways, ports, urban mass transit) and presents public policies and management approaches to make transportation systems efficient, innovative, and responsive. Drawing from scholars in a wide range of disciplines, including public policy, public administration, geography, economics, business logistics, engineering, and management, the Handbook of Transportation Policy and Administration serves as a comprehensive, single-volume reference for scholars, students, public officials, business and civic leaders, and transportation practitioners.

many problems of limited, aging capacity.......2007-05-07
Last week, a cover article in US News and World Report talked about commuting in the US. How increasing vehicle ownership and usage has turned many cities into commuting nightmares. Starting with [no surprise!] Los Angeles.
Which is timely backdrop for this book. The editors look at the national situation of transportation and ask how it could be improved. Nor is this confined to roads. Air transport, ports and railways all get their say. For all 4 modalities, there has been sustained increased usage over recent decades. Drived in part by greater international trade or globalisation.
This has led to some ports like Long Beach and Los Angeles being heavily congested. One chapter discusses the upgrading of the Alameda corridor, which is a railway link going from Long Beach to downtown Los Angeles. The current situation has huge bottlenecks for unloading the large cargo ships. Leading to delays and higher costs. As well as greater pollution by idling trucks.
That chapter about the Alameda corridor is instructive. For it shows how ports, rails and roads often have to be considered as closely related entities. At least where cargo is concerned.
The book also reflects our current times. Six chapters at the end are devoted to security. Protecting against terrorism. Railroads are seen as a crucial weakness. For much hazardous material is transported by train. Often, these routes go through or near heavily populated urban regions. Think Bhopal. Another aspect focusing much government attention is defending seaports against possible nukes arriving in cargo ships.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2007-08-13
I found this book a very helpful introduction to garden design and essentials as well as a good guide for somebody who cannot decide how to manage his/her garden space. The book is divided into sections with really useful information and simple rules that can be applied by anyone.
Useful Guidelines for Creating a Special Garden.......2006-06-19
George Carter is a well-established British landscape architect and space planner and he also just happens to have a very artistic eye and an ability to communicate to the reader. In this very beautifully designed and presented book, Carter offers strong ideas for every scale of garden. Not only does he demonstrate his ability to plan the grand gardens of mansions, but he also gives equal time and value to creating a small garden out of minimal space. How? Therein lies the magic of this fine book.
Carter encourages the reader to fully evaluate the land to be utilized as yard and garden, how to figure the axis of the property that will best enhance the home's placement on the land, how to take advantage of the natural benefits of that area's horticulture and solid elements, and then presents gardens he has created according to the restrictions (or lack of same) he finds. The book is filled with diagrams but it goes a step further than the usual 'do it yourself' books because of Carter's gift for painting: he not only shows the blueprint but also shows his painted concept of how the blueprint will look in its finished stage. The multiple paintings are a treat unto themselves!
Then Carter incorporates the very fine photography of Marianne Majerus who has combed the countryside finding gardens and the elements of gardens to give the reader actual images of current garden examples. Once the 'garden' is laid out and painted and photographed, Carter, with Majerus, offer superb examples of garden sculptures, fountains, perspective challenges, types of paths, and lighting effects that are not only mesmerizing to survey in Majerus' photographs, but also give countless ideas to the reader as to how to make their garden unique, whether that be by utilizing elements in the land that exist or suggestions of art and fountains and decorative items that are easily obtainable.
'Garden Spaces : Simple Solutions for Planning and Design', then, is more than an instructional book (though that it is in the best sense of the word). This is a book of unique, beautiful and practical gardens, a collection of gardeners' dreams made visible... and feasible! Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, June 06

Book Description
At a time when the Anglo-American relationship was riddled with suspicion and competition, Lowell Yerex, a British subject who lived in America, had the misfortune of becoming entangled in it as he attempted to create a commercial airline empire in Central America. His experiencesrife with adventure, romance, and intriguemade him a legend in air history and now provide a dramatic chapter in U.S.-British relations, as well as the history of Central America.
To understand Yerex's remarkable career, Erik Benson focuses on the uniqueness of the entrepreneur's background, one that enabled him to empathize with both Great Britain and the United States and to foster working relationships with these rivals. Yerex's dealings with the two countries shed new light on the development of aviation in the 1930s and 1940s, at a time when Pan American ruled the skies of the western hemisphere, when revolutions and coups rocked governments, and when fortunes waited to be made and lost.
Aviator of Fortune offers a detailed look at the life of Lowell Yerex: his successes and failures. Benson shows him as a tragic hero, influenced by fate and by his own ambitious desires. Today, his remains an important story, one that offers worthwhile reading for historians, aviation enthusiasts, and adventure seekers.
