Book Description

This photo of Escherichia coli being attacked by bacteriophages highlights rapidly developing technologies for using phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections without destroying normal resident bacteria, and without side effects. Phages are also being used to detect and remove pathogens from our food supplies, both plant and animal. Also exciting is the use of phages as vehicles to delivery DNA vaccines, often directly to mammalian immune system cells. Recent work also suggests possible antitumor effects of phages. We stand on the edge of a whole new world of exploration and applications of microbiology.

For over 20 years, and through five editions, Black's Microbiology: Principles and Explorations has captured students' imaginations. Her enthusiasm, passion, and knack for memorable stories and anecdotes bring the study of microbiology to life in a way few other texts can match.

Now updated to reflect the latest topics in the field (e.g., SARS, bioterrorism, GMO's, geomicrobiology) and accompanied by state-of-the-art animations of key concepts, this new edition is sure to help inspire a new generation of enthusiasts for the dynamic science of microbiology.

Critical Acclaim

3 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2006-02-19

It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).

3 out of 5 stars Lots of typos and missing info........2006-01-07

Good study guide when the answers were in the back. Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent. If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader? For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed. The textbook is great.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Informative Book!!!.......2005-12-12

WOW! I love this book. Every time I read part of it I learn so much stuff that I never knew before. It is fairly advanced information but it is written in a very understandable way. I am in high school and I like it because it teaches in the same format as my school's biology text books. I use this book because I like to read about this stuff. It is so facinating. If you are in a high school biology class, read this and you will be light years ahead of every one else!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for teachers and students.......2005-09-17

This text explains some very complex information in a very reader-friendly way. The photos, charts and practical examples of how microbiology impacts everyone's life make it very readable. I would recommend it for teachers and students!

5 out of 5 stars Micro Made Easy.......2005-09-14

This is one of the best text books I have ever used. The information is clear, concise, and interesting. It gives examples throughout the book of how microbiology is being used now to help us.

5 out of 5 stars Good, although a little dated..........2006-12-20

It is indeed a weighty volume that as the other reviewer said must have been a labour of love. It contains all kinds of topics, from hypnosis and meditation to rolfing and biofeedback and many, many others. I ended up giving my copy away though. I bought it for use as I was studying psychology/counseling and wanted something that had a good overview of the healing modalities available, along with some objective comment. It certainly had that and is well researched, yet in the end I felt that if I wanted to learn about many of the topics in this book, I'd just do my own research, probably beginning on the web and then picking a few good books on that topic and I think I'd have gotten a much better outline than a few pages on each area can really give. That said, it must have been a monumental effort to combine such a volume and the author is to be commended for that.

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedia about the human body.......2006-09-12

This book is a must ready for anyone interested in increasing their human potential. Murphy cites countless studies done on the human body, ranging from the normal to the paranormal. In my case, as a writer and long time yoga teacher this book has been invaluable for quoting to my students. I recommend it to people who want to open their minds to ever expanding human potentials.

5 out of 5 stars Modern classic missing pertinent content, yet, a must read!.......2006-01-27

The Future of the Body is what I would consider a "modern classic."
It is one of the truly comprehensive texts published on modern consciousness and transformative studies. I can't recommend it enough as mandatory reading for any student in the field of consciousness, transpersonal, and transformative psychology (or any field directly related to human potentials). However, my only reservation is that there is virtually no mention of psychoactives, those taboos of human culture, within the text as a whole. This fact alone keeps it from being truly comprehensive in terms of transformative capacities and forms of transcendence as defined by leaders in the field such as Susanne Cook-Greuter and even Ken Wilber (though I recognize his lack of attendance to this issue). Despite this omission, this text is, in my opinion, required reading for all students of consciousness-related studies.

-Ph.D student at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology

4 out of 5 stars Who is the subject of evolution?.......2004-02-23

With some reservations I found this compendium of disparate information a useful survey and a flying question mark about the meaning of the term 'evolution', a term long since fallen into a ditch whence it stumbles forth into still more confusion, with a black eye from the brain-dead Darwin debate. The number of wild pitches (the phantom index in most such books being high)is not out of hand. The New Age attempts to define the term 'evolution' are at their best as an indirect comment on Darwinian versions, but fail as soon as they attempt to remap its meaning in 'spiritual' terms. Nevertheless this text indicates the only avenue of approach, which is to map out just what creature it is that we are supposed to be explaining. And the answer is that we don't know. The temporary ongoing 'conclusion' is that we can't produce a theory of evolution because we haven't the foggiest what man's 'evolutionary psychology' really is. But one thing is clear, Darwinism is very far off the mark, and the current ostrich style of pontificating the subtle side of man out of existence in the name of Darwin's phoney theory can't go on forever. Or maybe it can. Scientists simply don't respond to suggestions that they don't have a grip on man, and who man is.
The standard problem with books like this (and this one is much better than most)is the 'passing of bad pennies', sudden passages of garbage in, garbage out. That is, metaphysical versions of occult or other 'spiritual' phenomena. The road is long and hard here, but, taken with reserve, we have grounds for protest at the amputation of man being enforced in an age of Big Science dogma.
One problem is that New Age thinking has spawned a category of 'self-evolution' and this has become the favorite of many gurus, and others. This attempt to appropriate the word 'evolution' adds still more confusion. The problem is that 'evolution' is confused with 'self-realization', the evolution of that self being unknown, a mystery of the descent of humans in the Paleolithic. Sometimes evolution and involution are confused or braided together. It is not true that realized men have a better understanding of evolution. Indeed, the legacy of gurus show they can't reckon their own history, let alone the large scale development of the species man. It is worth noting the legacy of German classical philosophy, as this suggests, prior to such figures as Hegel, the 'noumenal' aspect of the conscious subject. That insight might be helpful in putting the labyrinth in perspective, for the New Age field is littered with metaphysical zoo items mixed with the genuine insights into the sheer complexity of human nature that make the 'sociobiology crammed down our throats' an episode of primitive hi-tech cavemen. The implications of the Axial Age concept and data give one hint of the scale of 'macro evolution' that transcends even the insights of the Enlightened, for there we see the 'generated' aspect of world religion, acting beyond the realm of the oblivious yogi, what to say of the mechanized monotheist.
Usefully provoking book, taken with considerable caution.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Book.......2003-05-01

I gave this book 5 stars because it is very extensive in its scope - it is not, however, the final word on this topic, there is more - I guess there is always more and there are always even more amazing stories. The book explores different phenomena, some rather rare and unusual, as in the following excerpt:

"Thurston quoted a sister Margherita Cortonesi:

"On one occasion, among others, when [Sister Veronica] being in a trance state was reciting her Office alternately with some invisible being, she was observed gradually to stretch out until the length of her throat seemed to be out of all proportion in such a way that she was altogether much taller than usual. We, noticing this strange occurrence, looked to see if she was raised from the ground, but this, so far as our eyes could tell, was not the case. So, to make sure, we took a yard-measure and measured her height, and afterwards when she had come to herself we measured her again, and she was at least a span (ten inches or more) shorter. This we have seen with our own eyes, all of us nuns who were in the chapel."

In 1629, a Donna Hortenzia Ghini stated under oath that:

"Sister Lisabetta Pancrazi, formerly a nun in the same convent, told me that on one occasion, seeing that the said Sister Veronica when in ecstasy seemed taller than in her normal state, took a yard-measure and measured her height, and that after the said Sister Veronica came to herself she measured her again with the said yard-measure, and she found that she was half an arm's length shorter."

Among other religious who allegedly exhibited elongation, the Capuchiness Abbess Costante Maria Castreca was said to have grown a considerable height from the ground during a religious ecstasy; the Venerable Domenica dal Paradiso grew taller in trance, according to her spiritual director and confidants. Because such phenomena were not thought to be marks of holiness, they were noted simply because they were unusual.

I include such phenomena in this discussion because they indicate the body's responsiveness to altered states of mind. When consciousness is released from some of its ordinary constraints, whether in ecstasies or dissociated states, ligaments and muscles are sometimes liberated too.:

4 out of 5 stars conveys basic ideas.......2006-08-25

The book gives a good introduction to data mining. Larose manages to cover the important techniques used to analyse data and turn it into knowledge. These include neural networks, various types of clustering. Most importantly, perhaps, he discusses how to try various models and how to evaluate the effectiveness of each model.

The book's length is insufficient for many readers to actually get enough information to apply several of the methods. The details of using neural networks, for example, can be quite voluminous. But the value of the book is in conveying the basic qualitative ideas of the methods.

"Look to the ant, thou sluggard, consider her ways and be wise," says the proverb. Bert Hölldobler and E.O. Wilson have joined together to tell how they took this advice and to share the fruits of their wisdom. As Nature said, they "have done for ants what Levi's did for denim." Not just a good-parts version of their magisterial, Pulitzer-winning The Ants, Journey is also a double autobiography--the history of how early enthusiasm developed into an enormously fruitful scientific collaboration. "We, having entered our bug period as children, were blessed by never being required to abandon it," the authors write. Their devotion to their chosen field shines through.

Journey to the Ants gives an outstanding overview of the enormous variety and fascination of myrmecology, from the primitive bulldog ants of Australia to the complexities of weaver ant societies, slave-making ants and agriculture, army ants, and the social parasites concealed within anthills. There is an appendix with practical instructions for collecting individual ants or whole colonies, dead or alive. Hölldobler and Wilson clearly want other children to follow in their footsteps, growing from simple bug love to insights into evolution and society. --Mary Ellen Curtin

    Book Description

Richly illustrated and delightfully written, Journey to the Ants combines autobiography and scientific lore to convey the excitement and pleasure the study of ants can offer. Bert Hölldobler and E. O. Wilson interweave their personal adventures with the social lives of ants, building, from the first minute observations of childhood, a remarkable account of these abundant insects' evolutionary achievement.

    5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-08-03

There is few to say that has not been said. It is very well written and the information is mind-boggling.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-07-09

I loved this book. After reading it I spent the next night telling my wife all I'd managed to remember.

4 out of 5 stars Networks to Socialism, Love and Learn from the Ants.......2007-06-29

As many have said in the reviews and hard to top, this is a book that the whole family can enjoy as it includes instructions at the end on starting an Ant farm. I would however advise just one point for the kids and that is if the smaller kids are reading it by themselves and that is just tell them to skip over the big technical words and they will get just as much a kick out of it as I did. They can learn the technical words as they progress. But WOW ! , what a great book and the vast implications to so many areas from human society to our entire planet as a whole.

I was mostly interested in myrmecology to learn more about network systems and their benefits and implications, but got way more. The more I read of Edward O. Wilson, the more eager and the more desire I have to read further. My only regret is that it took this long to come across both his and others work.

Of note and besides the many enlightening aspects in the book, my favorite insigt is in the first few pages, as paraphrased, "It would appear that socialism really works under some circumstances; Karl Marx just had the wrong species." If that quote interests you, then the rest of the book will too.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and fun book for everyone from the myrmecologist to the layman..........2007-05-25

This book is very informative and extremely entertaining, offering a review of the history and landmark findings of myrmecology by two of the field's greatest minds. While it is not nearly as exhaustive as the authors' great tome The Ants, Journey to the Ants carries a momentum that The Ants at times can lack due to its nature as a technical monograph. Part gripping narrative and part academic text, it offers something for anyone with a healthy interest in biology.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read!!! Family Book........2007-02-03

I have the author's award winning, "The Ants" and it is truly the landmark book on all things Ants. But it is big and difficult for a non-scientist to read through. I recommend it, nonetheless. This book, however, is a wonderful distillation of the key points from the bigger book. It was specificilly written to engage a non-expert on the wonderful and amazing creatures called Ants. They succeed admirably in their attempt to impart good science and information about ants, but they succeed even better in their attempt to write an engaging, thrilling, intellectually stimulating book. Everyone who has the slightest appreciation of nature and love of learning will like this book. Adults can read it straight through, younger readers can sample at will, and younger children will love the pictures and short "readings to". This is one of the best non-technical science books I've read.

This is horrible software. The information is oversimplified and trite. The Labs do not present data that is useful to answer the 'focus questions'. on top of all of that it is buggy. It is most frustrating.

    Book Description

Energy Psychology: Explorations at the Interface of Energy, Cognition, Behavior, and Health, Second Edition introduces the exciting new paradigm of energy psychology and presents the latest research on the subject. This second edition begins by tracing the roots of energy psychology and contrasting them with contemporary approaches, and then explores the interface with cognition and behavior, and provides instruction in treatment applications. Drawing on more than 35 years of clinical experience, the author investigates the body's energy patterns, focusing on the relevance of acupuncture, homeopathy, prayer, and applied kinesiology to energy therapy. This new edition features expanded sections on scientific underpinnings, clinical research, manual muscle testing, and related energy psychology approaches.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Energy Psychology.......2005-09-17

This is an excellent, well written, and easy-to-read book that goes into the history, theory, research, and applications of a fascinating new approach to psychological treatment called energy psychology. While the concepts and treatments are in the alternative realm, obviously Gallo is highly knowledgeable about traditional psychological approaches, since he discusses in some depth other scientific models, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, neuroscience, neurochemistry, systemic concepts, etc. Additionally a well-balanced approach to the science and research is evident, since the various studies on energy psychology (and even prayer and acupuncture) are discussed in terms of their adherence to sound research methodology. The book also covers valuable information on quantum physics, recent findings in biology, acupuncture, applied kinesiology, and more. I've used some of the techniques covered and precisely outline in the book and they appear to be incredibly effective in removing phobias, trauma, depressed feelings, and even chronic pain. This second edition significantly expanded on the earlier work. Even though the book is relatively costly, it's worth every penny and more.

1 out of 5 stars Pseudoscience and delusions.......2005-09-06

After close examination of this text, I conclude that from a Chinese/western medical perspective that this book is an attempt to make pseudoscience look convincing in order to support the marketing campaign of the authors. From a position of Chinese medicine and medical physiology expertise, they have failed.

Energy therapy is based largely on false assumptions about the brain. It uses a "thought field" approach as the main background theory. However, thought fields do not exist. The book explains energy as in positive or negative terms. However there are no physical similarities or correlates between normal energy and thought energy. Any physics scholar will know that energy does not work that way. There are know known physical correlates with new age notions of thought energy. The book makes feeble attempts to argue for the existence of these spurious and non recordable energy fields.

It steers clear of paranormal claims that are usually associated with energy medicine, but it is still pseudoscience

Qi is more accurately conceptualized as a philosophy, not a science, and its physical existence is not empirically supported. The book is completely unconvincing in arguing otherwise. In addition, they note that while acupuncture, a procedure used to correct the flow of chi, has been shown to provide some minor analgesic effects, its utility has not been demonstrated for treating illnesses or diseases. Chinese medicine uses a combination of treatments that work together.

The authors' proposed mechanisms of action are all spurious pseudoscience. There are simpler far more plausible reasons that may explain the few cases of success with the energy therapies techniques. These include placebo effects resulting from the mere expectation for improvement, demand characteristics, therapist enthusiasm and support, therapist-client alliance, and effort justification (i.e., the tendency to report positive changes in order to justify the effort exerted), and psychological manipulations such as distraction, suggestion, acceptance, and dissociation. These reasons are dismissed by the author, in preference for erroneous notions about meridians, thought energy, and the flow of Qi. The authors even claim that when the techniques fail it is because a negative person has "undone" them.

Considering that these techniques may potentially distract the patient's attention away from a serious illness such as cancer, and that the energy therapists in general do not cater for this eventuality, sensible consumers need to think more than twice before embarking on this pseudoscientific treatment. The book may convince you to open your mind for a while. However, please do not be so open minded that your brain falls out.

    Regards
    Dr Lee

5 out of 5 stars Rapid therapy and self help.......2003-11-15

This is an amazing concept! Most approaches to therapy take time and a lot of effort, I've parcticed psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioral approaches with some success, but the time and effort needed is arduous. This approach is really different. You simply have the client think about the problem, rate the level of distress, and tap on prescribed pressure points on the body. The result is an elimination of the distress. Distress includes any troublesome emotion: anger, grief, guilt feeling, jealousy, anxiety, phobic reaction, panic, etc. The results also last and there is an obvious cognitive shift in how the person perceives the issue from then on. For example, the movement is from anger to forgiveness, anxiety to calm and confidence, guilt to self forgiveness and acceptance, trauma to it's over and done with. This approach is needed in EVERY THERAPIST's repetoir. Eventually all good therapists will incorporate this approach in what they do to help clients.

5 out of 5 stars Comment on previous review, March 26, 2000 from "A Reader".......2002-09-06

I must comment on a previous review as it contains incorrect information which may dissuade people from reading this book. In his review of March 26, 2000 "A Reader" writes "Read Swenson, Skeptical Inquirer, 1999, Vol 7, No. 4 for a review of this quackery." There is no Vol 7, No. 4 1999 issue of Skeptical Inquirer magazine that I can find on the csicop.org website. There is a online article from the July/August 2000 issue by Gaudiano and Herbert that I found that covers a superficial review of TFT. This is a standard academic "review" of the literature and complains that no scientific study has been done to date. I'm not surprised at the lack of study. More like lack of open mindedness. I have seen TFT and other tapping work on people including people who were skeptical. It does NOT work on me for some unknown reason. I would encourage readers to read this book and other books on this subject and make up their own minds. This area needs more research not bad reviews by a person who did not read the book and is closed minded.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide in Helping Self and Others.......2000-05-05

This is an extraordinary book written by an expirienced therapist in the field of Meridian Therapies. Dr Gallo gives us quite enough theory and history about developing techniques such as TFT, EMDR, TAT, NAEM... But the value in this book is authors PRACTICAL approach. By learning methods described here one is able to become a really high efficient therapist and can give lot of relief and benefit to oneself and others.

Dr Gallo bravely and openly shared with us many secrets of the Energy Psychology. We just need to take the keys and open the door.

I personally thank to the author as I gained much sucess for me and for other people by applying the techniques that I learned from his book. And really, this wasn't so hard to achieve.

I give my strong recommendation about this book to everyone who is willing (and brave enough) to start learning on the path that leads to helping self and others.

      Book Description

Practical Ecocriticism is the first book to ground environmental literature firmly in the life sciences, particularly evolutionary biology, and to attempt to bridge the ever-widening gulf between the ³Two Cultures.² Glen Love--himself one of the founders of ecocriticism--argues that literary studies has been diminished by a general lack of recognition for the vital role the biological foundation of human life plays in cultural imagination. Love presents with great clarity and directness an invaluable model for how to incorporate Darwinian ideas--the basis for all modern biology and ecology--into ecocriticial thinking.

Beginning with an overview of the field of literature and environment and its claim to our attention, and arguing for a biologically informed theoretical base for literary studies, Love then aims the lens of this critical perspective on the pastoral genre and works by canonical writers such as Willa Cather, Ernest Hemingway, and William Dean Howells. A markedly interdisciplinary and refreshingly accessible work, Practical Ecocriticism will interest and challenge the entire ecocritical community, as well as humanists, social scientists, and others concerned with the current rediscovery of human nature.

        Book Description

As physicians are faced with new and wonderful options for saving lives, transplanting organs, and furthering research, they also must wrestle with new and troubling choices-who should receive scarce and vital treatment, how we determine when life ends, what limits should be placed on care for the dying, and more. This book by renowned theologian Paul Ramsey, first published thirty years ago, anticipated these moral and ethical issues and addressed them with cogency and power, providing the intellectual foundations for the field of bioethics. This second edition of Ramsey's classic work includes a new foreword by Margaret Farley and essays by Albert R. Jonsen and William F. May that help to locate and interpret Ramsey historically and intellectually
