Outstanding.......2006-01-31
The best second book of statistics for biologists........2000-11-13
This book also has excellent chapters on linear regression, nonlinear regression (curve fitting) and logistic and proportional hazards regression (regression when the outcome is an either-or binary variable).
New to the second edition are a chapter on analysis of covariance, more extensive discussions of multiple comparisons methods, and a discussion of Cox proportional hazards regression for analyses of survival data.
The title is a bit misleading. This is not a "primer" of statistics. But once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, this is THE book for biologists to learn about various kinds of ANOVAS and regressions.
The best advanced statistics book for biologists.......1998-05-30

Comprehensive Book.......2001-10-30
Until now this is the best introduction that has been written.
It is comprehensive, clear and unbiased.
I think that the book is a step toward making the subject not only a common field of research but also a reference for those looking for new challenging topics.
What worths mentioning is that the authors are very envolved in the development of the theory of ICA ,other books are good but are deviated by their author's own approachs and this is normal but unhealthy for a first book on any field.
What constitutes a great help for understanding ICA are the relatively easy concepts if one just intend to pick an algorithm(ex:FastICA), but this is not the case regarding its theory.
One colleague once argued that ICA should have emerged long before the begining of the 90's, claiming that Gaussian forms
(Central Limit-Theorem) killed the idea of dealing with other kinds of distributions and therefore the signal processing community went assuming every thing was gaussian (noise was gaussian, signals are gaussian),but the emerge of HOS relaxed the gaussian restriction and ICA became possible and no longer 'blind' .
I think this should prepare researchers to deal with coming challengs more intelligently and efficiently .That is why I recommend this book since it tries to give a broad view to the subject .
Nice and detailed description of ICA.......2001-10-27
Compared with other ICA books, this manuscript has much depth and completeness. I highly recommend this book to any reader interested in this topic.

Disease Evolution: Models, Concepts, and Data Analyses (Dimacs Series in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science)
Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0821837532 |
Book Description
Infectious diseases are continuing to threaten humankind. While some diseases have been controlled, new diseases are constantly appearing. Others are now reappearing in forms that are resistant to drug treatments. A capacity for continual re-adaptation furnishes pathogens with the power to escape our control efforts through evolution. This makes it imperative to understand the complex selection pressures that are shaping and reshaping diseases. Modern models of evolutionary epidemiology provide powerful tools for creating, expressing, and testing such understanding.Bringing together international leaders in the field, this volume offers a panoramic tour of topical developments in understanding the mechanisms of disease evolution. The volume's first part elucidates the general concepts underlying models of disease evolution. Methodological challenges addressed include those posed by spatial structure, stochastic dynamics, disease phases and classes, single- and multi-drug resistance, the heterogeneity of host populations and tissues, and the intricate coupling of disease evolution with between-host and within-host dynamics. The book's second part shows how these methods are utilized for investigating the dynamics and evolution of specific diseases, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, SARS, malaria, and human rhinovirus infections.
This volume is particularly suited for introducing young scientists and established researchers with backgrounds in mathematics, computer science, or biology to the current techniques and challenges of mathematical evolutionary epidemiology.

Stochastic Approximation and Its Application (Nonconvex Optimization and Its Applications)
Han-Fu Chen Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402008066 |
Book Description
This book presents the recent development of stochastic approximation algorithms with expanding truncations based on the TS (trajectory-subsequence) method, a newly developed method for convergence analysis. This approach is so powerful that conditions used for guaranteeing convergence have been considerably weakened in comparison with those applied in the classical probability and ODE methods. The general convergence theorem is presented for sample paths and is proved in a purely deterministic way. The sample-path description of theorems is particularly convenient for applications. Convergence theory takes both observation noise and structural error of the regression function into consideration. Convergence rates, asymptotic normality and other asymptotic properties are presented as well. Applications of the developed theory to global optimization, blind channel identification, adaptive filtering, system parameter identification, adaptive stabilization and other problems arising from engineering fields are demonstrated.

Plasticity : Mathematical Theory and Numerical Analysis (Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics, Vol. 9.)
Weimin Han , and B. Daya Reddy Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387987045 |
Book Description
The theory of elastoplastic media is now a mature branch of solid and structural mechanics, having experienced significant development during the latter half of this century. This monograph focuses on theoretical aspects of the small-strain theory of hardening elastoplasticity. It is intended to provide a reasonably comprehensive and unified treatment of the mathematical theory and numerical analysis, exploiting in particular the great advantages to be gained by placing the theory in a convex analytic context. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides a detailed introduction to plasticity, in which the mechanics of elastoplastic behavior is emphasized. The second part is taken up with mathematical analysis of the elastoplasticity problem. The third part is devoted to error analysis of various semi-discrete and fully discrete approximations for variational formulations of the elastoplasticity. The work is intended for a wide audience: this would include specialists in plasticity who wish to know more about the mathematical theory, as well as those with a background in the mathematical sciences who seek a self-contained account of the mechanics and mathematics of plasticity theory.
