Book Description
Researchers in the physical activity field must have a firm understanding of the research process in order to evaluate data and reach valid conclusions. Research Methods in Physical Activity, fourth edition, facilitates this understanding in a format that is both instructional and entertaining to read.
Designed for the graduate-level student enrolled in a research methods course, the text also is an excellent reference for experienced researchers wishing to hone their analytical skills as well as learn new research methods and techniques. The concepts apply to every aspect of the study of physical activity, including exercise science, kinesiology, movement studies, physical education, sport science, and sport studies.
Research Methods in Physical Activity, fourth edition, is completely revised and updated. Features of this new edition include
· expanded information on evaluating data and statistical power,
· a simplified explanation of multivariate procedures,
· a new approach to nonparametrics parallel with parametric procedures, and
· a new chapter on exercise epidemiological research.
Research Methods in Physical Activity, fourth edition, covers all aspects of the research process, from developing and defining a research problem to writing a research report. Readers will enjoy the humorous anecdotes and sketches, a reflection of the authors' belief that research reporting need not be dry and pompous; it can be entertaining.

Book Description
The world does not need another "how to exercise" book. And this is exactly what this book is not about. Written by one of the new up-and-coming prevention researchers in a refreshingly humorous and compassionate style, Manpo-kei: The Art and Science of Step Counting presents the appealing rationale and the simple methods for taking back our naturally active lifestyles using a simple and inexpensive pedometer. The title of the revolutionary little book is a reflection of the Japanese 30-year experience with personal pedometers and lifestyle activity. Nicknamed "manpo-kei" which literally means "10,000 steps meter" in Japanese, the devices were imported to America in the mid-1990's by scientists who used them to determine daily activity levels in research studies. The power that these little instruments have to motivate individuals to increase their activity is just now being acknowledged by these same scientists... it is now time to let the public in on the secret. The author of this book holds nothing back while providing a workbook style content that gently guides the reader through the Manpo-kei program of self-monitoring, goal-setting, and personal feedback processes. The author also gives away handy tools including a pedometer shopping list (what to look for), activity logs, and personal feedback worksheets.
Customer Reviews:
Too Basic!.......2007-05-28
I thought the price of this book was absolutely RIDICULOUS. It measures 7" x 5" and is a paperback of approximately 80 pages - not counting references. Each page contained 2-3 PARAGRAPHS with slightly larger print so I would estimate that this would be about 50 pages of a normal book, which I read in under an hour.
Needless to say, the book was just way too basic. I did really like the concept of the term "Manpo-Kei" - as it just SOUNDS more intriguing that "step counting." LOL But Dr. Tudor-Locke could have just done so much more with this book. The history of Manpo-Kei was quite interesting, but I felt that it could have been expanded upon. I came away from reading this book with the impression that this was just a lecture or paper that the author had put into book form.
Did I get some advice from the book? Yes. Primarily, don't let your pedometer fall in the toilet!
The author advocates buying the pedometer that is the simplest with as few features as possible. I disagree and have found that these simple pedometers just can't take being dropped, when they inevitably take a fall. I absolutely LOVE my OMRON pedometer with software (approx $30-$40 from Amazon). It resets itself at midnight and stores my steps for 7 days and allows me to see my progress via charts with the software. Incredibly simple to use however. Also - so sturdy that it has taken at LEAST 10 falls and remained accurate.
Generally, I don't recommend a book INSTEAD of another. However, if you REALLY wish to learn about step counting, an EXCELLENT book is "10,000 Steps a Day to Your Optimal Weight" by Greg Issacs. I cannot recommend it enough!
A "Step-by-step" Guide to an Active Lifestyle.......2003-08-18
Searching for a simple way to increase your level of physical activity? Confused and overwhelmed by the number and variety of "get-fit-quick" programs available? Well, look no further than Manpo-kei: The Art and Science of Step Counting. Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke provides you with the tools and skills to start you on the road to enjoying an active lifestyle. So, buy this book and you'll be taking the first "step" toward looking and feeling better!
New Pedometer-Based Approach to Increasing Physical Activity.......2003-05-24
Manpo-kei, a creative, scientifically based practical guide to increasing physical activity using pedometers, is not only easy and fun to read, it is very informative. With obesity and physical inactivity levels on the rise, finding unique ways to get people moving for a lifetime is critical. Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke, a renowned researcher at Arizona State University and lifestyle physical activity advocate, has done just that in this inspired book.
Manpo-kei provides knowledge, tools, and strategies to make informed, personal choices about physical activity using pedometers as a guide. More specifically, Dr. Tudor-Locke presents background as to why inactivity is such a widespread problem, discusses pedometer selection and use (including a shopping checklist for purchasing a pedometer), and offers a user-friendly, theoretically based approach to goal setting and tracking step counts for the lifetime. She provides activity and tracking calendars, as well worksheets where readers are encouraged to answer questions pertaining to their personal activity behaviors and are asked to reexamine their step goals and experiences to make necessary adjustments to maintain activity. In addition, Dr. Tudor-Locke dispels the myth that 10,000 steps per day is for everyone. Step goals are personal and should reflect beginning step counts as well as personal health and/or fitness goals. Her "More Than Before" concept toward goal setting considers the importance of individualized step goals that will elicit benefits as well as sustainability.
What I like best about this book is the approach. The underlying theme about being more physically active by making informed choices, setting personal pedometer step goals, and tracking progress is discussed in entertaining and simple terms. The fact that the material is based on Dr. Tudor-Locke's personal experiences, professional knowledge, and her own research findings demonstrates the credibility, relevance, and effectiveness of the outlined techniques. Readers, and hopeful new pedometer users, can easily relate the information in Manpo-kei to their personal lives in a way that will provide the impetus to adopt a naturally physically active lifestyle over the long term. It is without hesitation that I recommend this book to those who want to learn more about an exciting and practical new approach to human movement.

Book Description
Physical Activity Instruction of Older Adults is the first book to detail the fundamental knowledge and skills associated with the training modules outlined in the International Curriculum Guidelines for Preparing Physical Activity Instructors of Older Adults. The curriculum guidelines, published in 2004, were developed by an international coalition of senior fitness specialists.
Physical Activity Instruction of Older Adults presents the competency-based objectives that fitness instructors should know and be able to perform to lead safe and effective physical activity programs for older adults with diverse functional capabilities.
A comprehensive blend of theory, practical content, and detailed instruction, the text is organized into five parts: · Part I introduces the new field of gerokinesiology; provides an overview of the aging process; and discusses the benefits of an active lifestyle in disease prevention, health promotion, and quality of life. · Part II provides information and guidelines for preexercise screenings and assessments, client feedback, and goal setting. · Part III focuses on the core fitness and skill components of a well-rounded physical activity program for older adults, including warm-up and cool-down, flexibility and resistance training, aerobic exercise, and balance and mobility training. · Part IV introduces specialty program and training methods, including exercise such as yoga, aquatic exercise, and master athlete training. · Part V covers how to apply principles of motor learning to program design; teaching, leadership, and motivational skills; special considerations for specific medical conditions; and legal and professional ethics and standards for instructors.
Application activities at the end of each chapter help the reader to synthesize the information and prepare them to design well-rounded physical activity programs for older adults. Other student-friendly elements include chapter objectives, introductions, summaries, study questions, key terms, and key points. In addition, numerous photos, figures, and tables make the book not just interesting, but visually appealing as well. This book is ideal for undergraduate students, and it is an excellent reference for physical activity instructors of older adults, fitness specialists, personal trainers, and activity directors.

a must read for parents !.......2005-12-15
This book is full of great ideas . Not only are there many examples of easy activities without expensive equipment, but there are also suggestions for food recipes that will delight your children.
I highly recommend this book.
Great Fun!.......2003-06-07
This is an excellent book for fun, learning and just great family times. Some of the ideas are more complex then others so the activities you choose depend on your time and how much you want to get involved at that time.
For every activity it lists all you need and complete directions which are really detailed for that activity.
The resources are wonderful! It list magazines, books, websites, organizations which are related to each topic and just branches out the fun and learning.
This was a nice book to keep around for further reference. Great to have on hand!
Lots of different activities to keep your children in shape.......2001-10-26
While some ideas seem too much work and/or time involved, it's a great book. What I liked about this book is that it gives you lots of fun facts throughout the book. For each activity, it lists materials you need and the directions on how to do that activity. At the end of the book, it lists magazines, organizations, and websites relating to Family Fun.

ready to use elementary k-2.......2005-09-29
This is a great book full of ideas to help teach k-2. It is very useful in teaching skills and just little games as well. very well developed for not only intro activities but for fitness and skill related activities as well.
great book.......2005-06-10
I also think this book is great with a great progression of skills and clear directions and photos. Can easily be adapted for a useful preK motor development guide as well.
Useful Ideas for teachers.......2004-10-31
This book has an abundance of great PE games and activities for teachers who have little experience or familiarity teaching PE right up to different ways of teaching mandatory skills for the experienced teacher. Many of the activities need few or no equipment which is good for many teachers who work in schools with few resources. I highly recommend this book to any early primary teacher.
This is the one for homeschoolers!.......2002-06-09
As a homeschooling mom of three boys I have searched long and hard for a book that would give me ideas for P.E. class. This P.E. series is the answer to my prayers. It includes hundreds of activities, fully explained and illustrated including a list of required equipment. Although some activities are for big groups, there are lots of activities for one or two children. They include lesson plan suggestions and blank lesson plans for making up your own. Some of the lessons involve using equipment not likely to be found in the home but a great deal of the lessons involve very simple materials like hoola hoops, balls, bean bags, etc. I highly recommend this series for homeschoolers!
Ready to Use PE Activities for Grades K-2.......2002-05-22
A great resource. This book contains a lot of developmentally appropriate activities that will meet the objectives of your curriculum. Outstanding!

Book Description
A guide to protecting children under eight years old from becoming either lethargic or high-strung
Today, many children fall into one of two categories, neither of which is healthy: one group is almost entirely inactive, and the other spends most of their "free" time in highly structured, overly stressful competitive sports that are age-inappropriate.
As an expert on children's movement and development, and as a consultant to the Children's Television Workshop, Gymboree, YMCA of the USA, and other groups, Rae Pica shows how the right kinds of activities increase children's enjoyment of physical activity for a lifetime. With straight talk on what works, what doesn't, and why, Pica teaches parents:
- Why raising a Super Kid is as dangerous as raising a Couch Potato
- Unique activity ideas and the benefits of "cooperative activities"
- How to recognize when a child is too active or not active enough
- Why competitive sports programs aren't the answer
- And much more
Customer Reviews:
Crucial book for ambitious parents.......2004-11-30
Rae Pica is very passionate about her subject, and provides the data to back up her beliefs. Parenting is so difficult, not just because children are so impressionable and innocent, and yet so demanding, but also because parents themselves cannot help but regress to their own childhoods. Books like this help to keep parents sane, reminding them that their good intentions will not heal the human race until they are aligned with the natural and healthy development of each individual personality that is in their care. This book provides much evidence of the importance of a more intelligent approach to mental, emotional and physical development than is currently employed in the vast majority of US schools. The games and suggestions she gives are easy for anyone to employ, no matter how tired or overwrought a parent may be! I'm especially pleased about her comment on swimming -- my niece was a competitive swimmer from a very young age, and although she was nationally ranked for her age, development of her muscular & bone structure became problematic (and expensive!) during her teens. (Why no one mentions this when they talk about how Michael Phelps can't walk or run properly is beyone me!) But not only parents should read this -- it's so easy to understand, that I'd give it to the babysitter too... they have just as much influence on your child as anyone else.
An excellent guide to encouraging physical activity.......2004-07-27
If you are interested in encouraging your child to adopt a more active lifestyle, you will want to add this book to your parenting book library. Rae Pica has written a well-researched, parent-friendly guide to promoting physical fitness in children. She starts out by talking out about the reasons parents will want to encourage their kids to become more physically active (e.g., the scary childhood obesity stats that stare us in the face every time we open the health section of a newspaper these days) and then warns of the perils of forcing your child to become a 'superkid' (a child who lives and breathes sports 24/7). She then goes on to talk about the important role parents have to play in promoting physical activity in children and offers some concrete strategies for doing so. The result is an excellent guide that every parent who is serious about combatting the childhood obesity crisis should own.
Hooray! An inspiring "How To" reference for ALL parents.......2004-01-13
I have half a mind to buy 10 copies for friends and family.
The author has depicted beautifully, not only how important it is to keep our kids active but, to make sure they don't get too much exercise as well. It never occurred to me that too much activity can actually cause harm.
I have two small boys and often struggle with whether or not I do enough to keep them active. It seems most of their friends play soccer, gym class, basketball, music lessons, arts & crafts, etc. The list goes on and on. I feel much better after reading this book that I'm not over-scheduling them. After all, they are only two and four.
This book offers FUN, practicle, simple ideas for age-appropriate activities. I keep this book on the kitchen counter as I plan my days.
My life is forever changed. I am far more motivated to set a good example for my children to follow with regard to exercising (my husband sure does). I want them to develop a life-long love for exercise, to stay fit and healthy. I find it wonderful that my boys now refer to going to the playground as "can we go exercise?" There are no negative connotations to exercise in my house.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Rae Pica!!!
Not What I was Looking For.......2004-01-07
I was very disappointed with this book. What parent/child doesn't know about hitting balloons around? Playing Follow the Leader? Or putting babies on their stomachs to strengthen their bodies since they are supposed to be sleeping on their backs all the time. Or putting objects ahead of them to encourage moving toward the toy? It is filled with what I feel is common knowledge--health risks of inactivity, kids' organized sports pros & cons, "motor milestones" for infants. I was looking for some creative ideas for small children, especially ideas on keeping active during the winter and bad weather. I was expecting many suggestions on simple, inexpensive ideas for active play, ratings of active play equipment, suggestions for some toys good for active play (beyond hoola hoops, balls, etc.). I didn't gain one good new idea from reading the whole book. But, I was glad to see the much hated Dodge Ball is now banned in many schools!
A Dream Come True.......2003-09-29
This book is a "must read" for the parents of young children. Having been a part of the coaching staff and the Board of Directors of a traditional youth sport program, I witnessed a lot that put my stomach in knots. I have spent several years since then reading professional journals and academic texts to help me to understand how to provide for a child's intrinsic interest in movement, play and sport without all of the negative outcomes that come with overzealous youth sport programs. I often wished that others would do some of the reading with me, but parents of young children have other demands on their time. Finally a book has appeared that is full of sound science and practical application. And, it is written for parents, not researchers and academics, even though I know this will be a welcome addition to their library as well. Although it may take hours of reading in professional journals and textbooks to realize just how valuable this book is, I'm here to tell you that I wish I had a book like this one when I started my serious reading in this area. The author provides numerous citations to reputable web sites, organizations, and other written resources for further exploration if you want or need more information on a specific topic. I am particularly impressed with the author's position that more is not always better. There are dangers to overscheduling our children. Thus, it is even more important that we as parents carefully evaluate the programs in which we do place our children. I now realize the importance of child-directed play and the time that needs to be allowed for all of the rich learning that comes with it. Your Active Child is a book you will want to read and keep handy as a reference as your child develops throughout childhood.
