Book Description

This brief rhetoric of argument teaches critical reading, informal reasoning, and writing as reasoned inquiry, and now features a mini-anthology of arguments on civic issues. The Shape of Reason emphasizes the enthymeme as the central basis for the invention and structure of arguments. This approach blends classical insights into rhetorical reasoning with contemporary understandings of the composing process as generative and organic, situated within discourse communities. The book helps to understand argument as inquiry, stressing the responsibility that writers have - to their audience and to their own ideas - in structuring arguments that earn their conclusions and in considering opposing arguments. For anyone interested in argumentative writing.

5 out of 5 stars The Shape of Reason.......2005-09-15

This book is wonderful! I've learned so much about writing and the responsibilities of a writer to his/her audience. The enthymeme--which can seem esoteric at first--makes sense to me now because it emphasizes the need to provide supportive reasons. Most importantly, I love the fact that this book highlights the need to see writing as an ongoing process.

1 out of 5 stars Finally- A Proven Sedative in Book Form!.......2004-01-26

This is the third worst and most boring book I have ever read, after William Doty's "Mythography" and Claire Robertson's "Trouble Showed the Way." And guess what? All these books were required reading- and total stinkers. My teacher thinks Shape of Reason is the best thing since sliced bread, probably only because he was a student of Gage. Not only does the prose make absolutely no sense, I don't agree with his points. If anything, following Gage's advice would probably make you a worse writer. But most likely, you will be reading this for a class, and you won't have the option of saying no. At 45 dollars, this book is a rip-off, too.

5 out of 5 stars Colors and Shapes.......2006-08-11

The Colors and Shapes book is a very useful tool for learning the basics of Spanish. If you want something that is easy to read and understand, this is your book. From reading this book, I think anyone would be able to learn the basic colors and shapes in both English and Spanish. My favorite part was the last page which was a picture of a colorful room full of shapes. This was a good exercise to wrap up the book and apply the words that I learned. A child would be able to use this book, and others like it in the series, to learn and then apply knowledge in every day life when seeing colors and shapes of any kind. This book doesn't just stick to simple shapes such as circle and square, but also includes words for diamond, sphere, and cone.

5 out of 5 stars Color and Shapes?Los Colores Y Las Figuras.......2002-10-22

I want to continue learning the Spanish language and found that this children's book helped me and my family alot. I was intimidated by the language, and by starting at this basic level, it opened a new door for me to want to build upon and continue to learn more. By getting down the fundamentals, I am able to go on to more things. My kids are constantly speaking the words out loud and are actually teaching each other and myself Spanish. I am glad that there are books out there like this that I can use, no matter how young the age group, and actually learn.

5 out of 5 stars Great foundations book.......2002-10-18

I recently became interested in toddler and primary age children's books because I am a grandmother. Looking for starter books, it was great to discover this title, and the companion English-Spanish Foundations co-volumes. My grandkids enjoyed the color and layout and definitely learned!

5 out of 5 stars Colors and Shapes.......2002-10-18

Several members of my family have small children who are just learning to read. I was looking for an english/spanish book that would be fun for them to go through, but would also present information in an easy and understandable way for them. This book was just what I was looking for. If anyone is looking for a great educational gift for little kids be sure to take a look at this!

In a child's world, there are big things and then there are little things: big tree, little leaf; big cake, little cookie; big mommy, little baby. Todd Parr's BIG & little, an adorable companion volume to another study in opposites, Black & White, celebrates size. Just small enough for a toddler to hold, and tough enough to withstand toothy attacks, this little board book is full of big ideas. Young readers (or viewers) compare trucks to tricycles and skyscrapers to doghouses as they identify boldly drawn objects against bright, colorful backgrounds. Simple, childlike illustrations appeal to young eyes, never detracting from the task at hand. Each two-page spread shows a big something, with the word "BIG" printed on top and the name of the object below, and a little something, with "little" above, the name beneath. Children will marvel at the different contexts: a banana can seem huge when compared to tiny peas, just as an elephant looms mightily over an ant. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

With these two bold, colorful board books, Todd Parr introduces BIG concepts to little children. In BIG & little, kids can compare sizes of everything from trucks and tricycles to elephants and ants and mommies and babies. In Black & White, they can point out a black sheep and a white sheep, a black hat and a white snowman, and even a black-and-white zebra!

5 out of 5 stars An ideal first book.......2002-03-22

This was one of the first books we showed my daughter, and it quickly became her favorite. From about 5 months to 8 months, she smiled happily every time we showed her the simple contrasting images in Todd Parr's little book. I highly recommend it for new babies.

5 out of 5 stars Great first book.......2002-03-03

We started reading this book to our son at about 3-4 months. He loved the simple words and drawings, but I think the colors really got him. He started turning the pages after a short time. It's a nice small board book; the perfect size for little hands. He's 10 months now and still loves it even though it's well chewed. This book really got his attention at an early age and he loves all sorts of other books now. This book is now one of my standard baby gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Todd Parr.......2001-12-27

I bought this book while visiting my parents during Christmas. We realized that our 1-year old son did not have enough to keep him occupied (this was prior to Dec. 25). We already own "The Okay Book" (which I also highly recommend) so we're partial to Todd Parr and his style (childlike drawings on pages with vibrant, contrasting colors). "BIG & little" was an instant hit with my son, who was carrying it around with him before we even left the store. It's a great mix of contrast and repetition, with each set of pages showing two similar items (vehicles, foods, animals), one drawn on a large scale (banana) and the other on a small scale (peas). Our son has been flipping through the book frequently ever since we got home. The thick board pages are durable and it's small enough for him to hold easily in his car seat as well. While he isn't exactly "reading" it, the concept of big and little is being reinforced nonetheless. Many of Todd Parr's books are good. "BIG & little" is no exception. Buy it - you and your child won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars My 11 month old loves this book.......2001-09-12

I read it to him six or even times a day and he sleeps with it at night. The illustrations are bright and simple - perfect for babies and it presents concepts in a way they can understand.

5 out of 5 stars Great for younger babies!.......2001-06-02

I am the Mom of a preemie who is 6 mos actual and almost 4 months adjusted. We work very hard with her to keep her on track developmentally, especially with books. These are the first actual books that she wants to reach out an grab. The colors and drawings are bright and simple and you can see her focus on them cleary. The book is also very small, about 3 inches square making it easy for her to grab herself. Talking through the items on each page got her talking too making the experience more rewarding. I highly recommend these books for little ones.

The hand is, among other things, a complex symbol, representing both the creative and the prosaic. This blending of the spiritual and the mundane is what makes the hand unique, as it in turn makes us unique among animals. Neurologist Frank R. Wilson has taken on a heroic task: to explain the hand on both of these levels and to show us how we use these marvelous instruments to find and create meaning in our lives.

Anthropology, neuroscience, music, and puppetry all figure prominently in The Hand, which effortlessly guides the reader through its million-year biography. Brains and thumbs growing and changing to accommodate each other, discovering tools and language together, kicked us out of the monkey house for good. While there is still controversy over whether we are the brainiest animals on the planet, it is abundantly clear that we are the handiest.

This manipulative ability is our greatest strength and our most terrible flaw. Without hands we would have no Louvre but also no nerve gas. But, Wilson says, our situation is more complex. Our access to far greater means to achieve our ends gives us a greater hunger for meaning. We long to use our hands to satisfy our needs--whether spiritual or down-to-earth. This creation of meaning from nothing may be our greatest achievement. In the end, The Hand is brightly optimistic, showing that our reach truly does exceed our grasp. --Rob Lightner

Book Description

"A startling argument . . . provocative . . . absorbing." --The Boston Globe

"Ambitious . . . arresting . . . celebrates the importance of hands to our lives today as well as to the history of our species."
--The New York Times Book Review

The human hand is a miracle of biomechanics, one of the most remarkable adaptations in the history of evolution. The hands of a concert pianist can elicit glorious sound and stir emotion; those of a surgeon can perform the most delicate operations; those of a rock climber allow him to scale a vertical mountain wall. Neurologist Frank R. Wilson makes the striking claim that it is because of the unique structure of the hand and its evolution in cooperation with the brain that Homo sapiens became the most intelligent, preeminent animal on the earth.
In this fascinating book, Wilson moves from a discussion of the hand's evolution--and how its intimate communication with the brain affects such areas as neurology, psychology, and  linguistics--to provocative new ideas about human creativity and how best to nurture it. Like Oliver Sacks and Stephen Jay Gould, Wilson handles a daunting range of scientific knowledge with a surprising deftness and a profound curiosity about human possibility. Provocative, illuminating, and delightful to read, The Hand encourages us to think in new ways about one of our most taken-for-granted assets.

"A mark of the book's excellence [is that] it makes the reader aware of the wonder in trivial, everyday acts, and reveals the complexity behind the simplest manipulation." --The Washington Post

5 out of 5 stars Hand in Hand.......2004-04-07

We routinely speak of "grasping" ideas, or "holding principles dear" or examining concepts "within our reach." For Frank Wilson, a neurologist who specializes in the bizarre and tragic affliction "musicians cramp," these turns of phrase are not accidental. Integrating brain, mind, and body - forging a psychology of the normal - animates Frank Wilson's study of the human hand.

He marshals evidence from anthropology, philosophy, psychology, anatomy and medicine, linguistics and engineering to discuss the co-evolution of hand and brain within human and human-antecedent societies. Leaving the trees for the savanna set in motion an enormous number of changes for our australopithicine ancestors - the most significant of them the bipedal gait that freed those pre-human hands. We call one of our distant ancestors homo habilis - handyman -- and the intelligence built into our remarkable hands over time gave the evolving human species great advantages in meeting uncertain futures. (Unhappily hands are preserved less well than skulls, so anthropologists naturally skew their investigations.) Wilson describes the mechanics of what we can do that our primate ancestors and cousins couldn't and can't. It is impossible to read these descriptions of the repertoires of hand and arm movements without replicating them. Because chimpanzees' fingers point straight down and ours angle toward the thumb, they are unable to bring thumb to meet pinky. A chimp can't power-grip a screwdriver, throw a baseball, or play a guitar. And neither can he use his fingers in a cluster that makes the three way "chuck" that lets us hold a pen or a brush.

Hand, brain, and eye co-evolved to track a target - hapless gazelle, thick browed foe, or catcher's mitt are all the same in this long view of hand coordinating with eye.One anthropologist calls us "the lop-sided ape." Nine out of ten of us are right-handed. Wilson presents us with an evolutionary parable in this regard. We throw with our right hands. Our left-brain largely controls that movement. Our right brain, and hence our dominant left eye, processes broad fields of visual information. So a right handed stone-tosser, an ancient spear-chucker, or a major league pitcher all divide their attention naturally and efficiently.

Our built-in capacity for language, the most singular human quality, is connected with our hands, too. Deep instinctual structures are revealed when speaking is decoupled from sound and when signing is teased apart from gesture. Deaf people who articulate with their hands activate the same areas of the brain as ordinary speakers. (Oliver Sacks has wondered if sign-users linguisticize space the way the rest of us spatialize language.) I've occasionally watched young hands-on museum-goers scribble, draw, and write - and their tongues often loll purposefully at the corners of their mouths, as if to help along their fingers. Wilson discovers something tyrannical in the celebration of multiple intelligences once we've slain "the dragon of General Intelligence" - we're likely to recruit skills from among the multiple intelligences for our specific purposes, and so snub the others. Culture divides and directs human intelligence, specializing some of us early as athletes, others as musicians, or readers. For Wilson, becoming "handy" is an antidote to specialization and its discontents. Most of us need a hobby, and whether we paint sonnets on grains of rice for fun, climb a sheer rock face, or spoon applesauce with a backhoe, our respite is likely to come hand-delivered.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Book.......1999-10-09

Perhaps the thing I liked the best about this book is the tone of reverence that Dr. Wilson has for the subject of his life's work - the hand. Clearly there is a lot at stake for the author in his work - it comes through in everything in this book - and that's the thing that I found inspiring about it. If only we could all (or at last many of us!) feel the same way about the focus of our work.

I "dinged" it one star for two reasons - I would have liked to have seen more attention played to the concept of how "the hand shapes the mind." A lot of the book seemed like a very well written elaboration on the standard neurologic model of "motor programs" and the brain's role in controlling the hand, etc. The idea that the "history" and "education" of the hand has a reciprocal role in shaping the mind is a very exciting concept, and I would have liked to have seen it explored in more depth.

Second, I thought the book rambled at times. Dr. Wilson tended to bounce around a lot between neurology, anthropology, educational policy, etc. and it wasn't always clear what was driving the transitions from one area to the other.

On the whole, this is an excellent book offering a very unique perspective on the mind and human nature through the investigation of the miraculous but little appreciated hand.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those interested in cognition of the hand.......1999-08-05

As a neuroscientist, educator, and a Deaf person, I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Wilson's insights into how the hand shapes our lives and our brains. He raises a lot of questions yet to be investigated about how crucial the manipulation of the hands are to cognitive learning. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the questions he's raised both for normal people and those of us who use manual language over speech, and whether those choices in means of communication cause the brain to be mapped differently. Dr. Wilson writes with humor and gives fascinating insights into the worlds of people whose advocations depend upon their hands. This long neglected part of our body should now receive the attention it deserves in shaping our minds.

Book Description

Memoir is more than writing down memories; it's a powerful motivator for children to write and revise. Working with familiar material, students explore their lives, learn new and sophisticated elements of craft, and engage deeply with content to uncover personal and universal meaning. By teaching with memoir, you can help students exceed official standards for writing, both in class work and on tests, while also giving them a tool for making sense of their place in the world.

In Writing a Life, Katherine Bomer presents classroom-tested strategies for tapping memoir's power, including ways to help kids generate ideas to write about, elaborate on and make meaning from their memories, and learn craft from published memoirs. She describes dozens of ideas for minilessons, teacher - student conferences, peer conferences, writing activities, prompts, and revision strategies. She then crosses the literacy spectrum to show how studying mentor memoirs can enrich students' reading by building strong reading-writing connections. In addition, Bomer presents a curricular unit that prepares students for writing tests by systematically and explicitly helping them transfer the content and skills they develop in writing memoir to the demands of standardized assessments.

Every student has a story to share. With Writing a Life, you'll have the inspiration, the strategies, and the materials you need to help them write it beautifully.

Writing a Life is the perfect synthesis between a good armchair read and a how-to-guide. I made notes all over the margins of this book and can't wait to begin teaching memoir to my students. The last chapter - teaching kids how to get ready for standardized tests - will become a classic reference tool for all teachers of reading and writing.

2 out of 5 stars Error-filled again.......2005-09-11

Yet again Ms. Emberley has created a book out of a dictionary, and again, it has errors. For example, she calls a square a "cuadro," which is plain wrong. A "cuadro" is a painting whereas a "cuadrado" is a square.

These books are certainly pretty to look at and are geared to entertain children, but their poor, error-filled content make them a poor choice to actually teach Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Simple but good.......2004-08-28

This book is very simple, but right now my 12 month old son picks it every day without fail. He even laughs at "square", I am not sure why. I got it as a gift from a friend who had to go buy one for her son because he always wanted it from the library. Neither of us are Spanish speakers - that might be a nice feature, but the book works fine in English.

4 out of 5 stars This book succeeds where some others fail.......2003-08-19

I appreciate this book as well as the "My Colors" book by the same author because they take the time to seperate shapes and colors. In some series, the two are combined and I feel that they should be taught seperately.

5 out of 5 stars A great series for early language acquisition.......2003-03-12

I have been using this entire series with my son since he was born, and he is now 14 months. He loves the pictures and turning the pages. The books use the format of one word per page and it gives both the English and Spanish form of the word. This is a great series for early language acquisition.

5 out of 5 stars Great find.......2002-12-06

My son loves this book series.. He wants us to read it to him over and over. It has been a great tool to introduce him to Spanish from his 1st birthday while also exposing him to shapes, colors and numbers...

4 out of 5 stars For all beginner writers........2007-01-04

I have always wanted to learn how to write essays and this book is very good as a foundation type of book for essay writing. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Especially Useful for Critiquing Your Writing.......2000-07-22

The author walks the reader through 8 basic types of essays, and provides writing exercises for each of those types. Where this book is most helpful, however, is in the critiquing of the essays written by one of the author's students. Ms. Bender shows you her process of critique in the samples of the student's first draft and second draft.

First, she singles out those "velcro words" (the nouns and phrases in the first draft essay that stick with her) -- and she encourages you to take your own note of your "velcro words". She then walks through her feelings as she reads the essay -- where she is intrigued, for example, or confused by the images the student uses. Finally, she shares this information with the student so that the student can choose to elaborate or minimize certain parts of the essay in a second draft, thus producing tighter writing and more polished images.

I find Bender's process of critique quite useful and relatively painless.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids!.......2007-02-22

My child loves this book - especially since he loves the sun and moon. The slide outs are really a fun way for them to learn their opposites.

5 out of 5 stars This author is brilliant!!.......2003-11-13

All of his seek n slide books are amazing and I highly recommend them. My daughter knew all her colors, shapes, numbers and opposites before the age of 2 because of these books. Opposites, just like the others, are made specifically for a younger child. I would say 9mo -3 yrs old. My daughter LOVES to pull the slide tabs out and they are very sturdy and have held up to constant pulling. These books teach by reinforcing what is learned in the pull tab. It is a great memory game as well. Chuck Murphy knows how to make books that younger kids will not only appreciate but actually learn fast!

5 out of 5 stars Dazzled.......2001-03-02

My son loved this book so much he destroyed it. It is a very sturdy book, but he read it so many times it finally fell to pieces. I just bought him a new copy--what more can I say.

The companion title to Goodnight Moon creator Margaret Wise Brown's 1949 classic, The Important Book, was published for the first time in 1999, with wonderful illustrations by Caldecott Honor recipient Chris Raschka of Yo! Yes? "Yo, yes!" we say. Just as Brown's first volume distills the essence of everyday entities, this splendid rhyming picture book zeroes in on the most important things about being one, two, three, four, five, and six years old.

The important thing about being Four/ is that you are bigger than you were before..../ You can blink and think/ as quick as a wink./ You can open your eyes/ to a world of surprise.

Children love the process of reaching each new year's landmark, and this whimsical equivalent of a wall-notch height chart will thoroughly delight them. It is difficult to imagine the book without Raschka's wriggling, singing, flinging babies, toddlers, and kids of all colors, exquisitely crafted with vivacious brushstrokes and vibrant watercolors. He has also cleverly woven numbers into his illustrations--a five-pointed star behind the five-year-old, a pinwheel of six circles behind the six-year-old. The splashy modern artwork rejuvenates Brown's half-a-century-old rhymes, plants them squarely in 1999, and guarantees a future classic. (Click to see a sample spread. Book Description

The Important thing
about being One
is that life
has just begun.

In a playful voice that is uniquely Margaret Wise Brown's comes this delightful picture book about just what it means to be six, five, four, three, one, two and 'most importantly' you. Caldecott Honor Medalist Chris Raschka's innovative illustrations burst with energy and literally dance along with Brown's whimsical verses of discovery. A sturdy mirror fixed to the last page allows readers to literally become a part of the story.

Another Important Book is the never-before-published companion to one of the most beloved children's books of all time, The Important Book, originally published in 1949, by Margaret Wise Brown, with illustrations by Leonard Weisgard. It's an invitation to celebrate toddlerhood. Turn the pages to find out exactly what's so important about some of the most important ages of a child's life.

3 out of 5 stars Did not live up to my expectations........2007-01-12

The original Important Book is core literature in our district. Its an awesome book which lends itself to many different writing prompts. This was a nice book not an awesome one. Third Grade Teacher

5 out of 5 stars Number 1 for the classroom.......2005-09-05

This book is a great book for the classroom. It is a great intro. to create an "Important Book" with your own class. We did it and the children loved creating a page to tell about what was important about them. We love it!!

2 out of 5 stars Okay for Toddlers But Not for Older Children.......2005-08-07

I think they have the age range wrong for "Another Important Book." Rather than being for 4 to 8 year-olds, I think 3 and under might be more accurate.

Certainly my children (3 and 5; boy and girl) had little interest in this book. They found the drawings too babyish and the content just did not spark any calls for another reading.

Counting to 6? I've found my toes? Just all 'non-starters' for preschoolers and kindergarteners, unlike the original "The Important Book" which dealt with observations of the world around us.

Two Stars (for the 3 and up age range). Check the images that Amazon has provided to decide on appropriateness for your child.
For those interested in revisiting babyhood with older children we suggest Margaret Miller's "Now I'm Big".

4 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book!.......2000-04-19

We received this book as a birthday gift. Although she is just 14 months old, my daughter adores this book -- especially the section on three-year-olds (The important thing about being three is ME!). She participates heartily. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An adorable picture book that talks about growing up.......1999-11-06

This book celebrates what is special about being a child. The same familiar pattern on every page, allows children to anticipate what will come next. It is a wonderful book to share with young children.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and packed with information.......2006-03-13

This is a beautiful book that's also a great resource of information. Its nicely bound in a large, coffee-table sized forma. Most of the illustrations in the body of the book are photographs of contempory and historial images, including historic art and architecture. The back of the book has a useful sign & symbol glossary, with images in an elegant, black on white sillouette style (as a graphic designer looking for inspiration, I really liked these!).

The text contains a great deal of information about the cultural, historical, psychological, and spiritual significance of many symbols.

I recommend this book whether you are seriously interested in "symbol literacy", are an artist or designer (or psychologist!), or are just looking for a nice coffee table book or gift. I'm not sure why its so inexpensive - its more than worth the price.
