Book Description

Waiting for Daisy is about loss, love, anger and redemption. It’s about doing all the things you swore you’d never do to get something you hadn’t even been sure you wanted. It’s about being a woman in a confusing, contradictory time. It’s about testing the limits of a loving marriage. And it’s about trying (and trying and trying) to have a baby.
Orenstein’s story begins when she tells her new husband that she’s not sure she ever wants to be a mother; it ends six years later after she’s done almost everything humanly possible to achieve that goal, from “fertility sex” to escalating infertility treatments to New Age remedies to forays into international adoption. Her saga unfolds just as professional women are warned by the media to heed the ticking of their biological clocks, and just as fertility clinics have become a boom industry, with over two million women a year seeking them out. Buffeted by one jaw-dropping obstacle after another, Orenstein seeks answers both medical and spiritual in America and Asia, along the way visiting an old flame who’s now the father of fifteen, and discovering in Japan a ritual of surprising solace. All the while she tries to hold onto a marriage threatened by cycles, appointments, procedures and disappointments. Waiting for Daisy is an honest, wryly funny report from the front, an intimate page-turner that illuminates the ambivalence, obsession, and sacrifice that characterize so many modern women’s lives.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic: Reminds me of "Eat, Pray, Love".......2007-10-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book-- surprisingly, because I didn't have any personal experience with infertility. I do have many friends and relatives with these experiences, so I was curious to understand more about what they're going through. The author is a brilliant and clever writer-- I loved her "voice"-- it reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love." She's funny, honest and insightful. This was actually a page-turner-- not what I would have thought for this type of memoir. I LOVED this book and I'm recommending it to all my friends.

3 out of 5 stars Waiting for Daisy .......2007-09-25

This book was difficult to read. Author was cold, hard to connect with and not easy to agree with. Definitely not like-able or personable. Very selfish individual. I hope she raises Daisy to Not be like her.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those feeling alone or isolated in their fertility journey!.......2007-09-24

This book was a God-send to me in my own painful infertility journey. Peggy's descriptions of her mental states expressed my own, but in ways I could not put words to. From her initial ambivalence about parenthood, to all-consuming obsessions with achieving it, her relations with her husband, and frustrations with fertility specialists, her journey affirmed that I was not alone in my journey. Her sense of humor and wit actually made me giggle a few times and, mostly, helped me feel so much less alone. I would highly recommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2007-09-19

I read this book all in one evening. I loved every page of it. I have read just about every book on this topic, but no one has described, with such accuracy and eloquence, the trying to conceive journey like Peggy Orenstein. I have not read another book that I feel deals better with this topic, especially in terms of being realistic. Nothing seems forced, her doubts and concerns are so vivid. She states everything that has been swimming around in my head in such a clear and honest way, that it actually helped me to organize my own feelings about this struggle. I would recommend this book to everyone going through infertility, and to everyone who knows someone going through infertility, and to everyone else for that matter. It is beautifully written; touching, but funny; sad, but hopeful. This is a book that everyone will be able to relate to in one way or another.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant, funny, and on-the-mark!.......2007-09-13

Peggy Orenstein's portrayal of a quest for a child in "Waiting for Daisy" is candid and humorous. I enjoyed every chapter of this thought-provoking book. Orenstein's honest eloquence in expressing her feelings throughout her incredible journey moved me so much. Time and time again, I found myself thinking, "I thought I was the only one who felt that way!"

Whether you have ever been through any of Ms. Orenstein's challenges: cancer, infertility, IVF treatments, and adoption attempts, or whether you have simply felt somewhat ambivalent about parenthood.... this book is for you.

Book Description

For thousands of years, Chinese women have trusted traditional Chinese medicine to help them conceive. A recent medical study found that women who augmented Western fertility treatments with TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, doubled their chances of a succesful pregnancy. THE INFERTILITY CURE gives women an effective, natural means of supporting their efforts to get pregnant. Based on techniques and remedies drawn from traditional Chinese medicine, this program shows readers how to increase their overall health and well-being, strengthen the organs and systems vital to reproduction, heal specific conditions that may affect fertility, and even support Western-based reproductive technology such as IVF and hormone therapy. Dr. Lewis' easy-to-follow program begins with diagnosis, using an extensive questionnaire to determine each reader's unique diagnostic category. The next three steps involve bringing a woman's body back into balance through diet, acupressure, and Chinese herbs. By following this program, women will be able to create a welcoming physical and emotional environment for what they desire most: a child.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Alternative Fertility Treatments.......2007-08-21

I just put my 6 week old son to bed-- the result of following a combination of this books' practices as well as an endocrinologist' testing and -- I believe-- just plain grace from the Lord-- While I am sure you could follow everything to a "T" and not get pregnant, I found her holistic advice to be a great counterpoint to Western medicine's sole focus on getting your eggs, uterine lining, and his sperm to behave-- But I DO think it is important to start any fertility journey by getting tested to be sure that all of your "parts" so to speak are in order. (ie HSG, ultrasound for ovaries and uterine lining, post coital test, etc) What she proposes isn't easy and involves reducing stress, radically changing your diet, and taking gross herbs, but I found all of the treatments would compliment Western medicine. In my personal case, I followed all her advice-- with the guidance of a licensed acupuncturist. (I would NEVER attempt to decide myself about the herbs, acu points, etc. ) from reducing stress to diet change. In addition, once I had naturally achieved pregnancy-- I continued treatment and monitoring from my RE for low progesterone.

4 out of 5 stars Good information.......2007-07-23

I bought this book while I was struggling with infertility. I'm happy to say that I finally have a beautiful baby girl. It's been a while since I read this book, but I attribute it to me living a more natural lifestyle and really thinking about how the chemicals around us could have affected my fertility. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to help the process along, naturally.

4 out of 5 stars Didn't cure me, but comprehensive nonetheless.......2007-07-18

I can't say that I was cured after reading or applying the information from this book, however, I still suggest this for people in the midst of struggling. One of the things that I really needed when I first began treatments was to feel that I had a sense of control over what felt completely out of my hands. Reading this book gave me that enpowerment. I worked through the surveys and learned an alternative way of thinking about my body. I was then able to take that information to an acupuncturist and have an intelligent conversation about my condition.

While I know very little about TCM, this book was comprehensive and carefully thoughtout. I did not feel overwhelmed by the material and it provided me with an education on an area of fertility treatment that has worked for many others.

The only downside to this book was that it tried to deal with too many possible diagnosis situations. Many of the chapters did not apply to my situation and therefore not necessary for my reading. I did, however, pass the book onto others, making the entire book worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Buy before trying to conceive.......2007-07-16

This book is one of the best that I've read regarding fertility. Since it's marketed as "infertility", I didn't read until I had been trying for a while, but recommend this book as one to read BEFORE you start trying to conceive.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book and resource!.......2007-07-16

This is wonderful book for both practitioners and laypeople alike. I initially found this book through a patient and have used it extensively with every fertility patient I've seen since then. Dr. Lewis has information that ranges from dietary changes that anyone can get started with immediately to Traditional Chinese Medicine patterns in infertility and acupuncture protocols that any practitioner who uses acupuncture can use. This is also a great book for patients to bring to their doctors, naturopaths or acupuncturists. Acupuncture and (sometimes) herbs are now being encouraged by many mainstream fertility clinics and this book allows me to have much of the information I need at my fingertips.

If you are trying to become pregnant or if you are a practitioner that uses Traditional Chinese Medicine with your patients, this book is a must.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great "first" book to read........2007-08-23

Gave me really good information. I was pretty clueless when I picked up this book. Explained everything to me in simple terms. Loved that it has a glossary in the back to reference. Wouldn't read this if I was already familiar with the process though.

2 out of 5 stars Good general process description but forgets to mention the exceptions.......2007-01-07

Liza does a good job walking you through the process but she fails to mention that not everyone feels/ reacts the same for each step. I found the HSG test to be extremely painful and had a horrible reaction to the progestrone shots. I wish everyone the best of luck with IVF and just remember everyone's body is different.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book for beginning IVFers!! :).......2006-09-05

I wish I would of found this book first! It's an easy read with so much valuable information. It covers everything from IVF lingo to sample cycles AND gives great commentary from women and men who have survived & succeeded with IVF. I couldn't put it down & constantly found myself sharing interesting info from the book with my husband. You won't be disappointed with this one!!!
Best of luck to you!

2 out of 5 stars Good Info, But Trite and Patronising.......2006-05-02

The book is filled with good definitions about the winding road that is IVF-fertility treatment is packed with acronyms, abbreviations, and science, and the author does do a good job of explaining what all of the acronyms and abbreviations are. The book flows well and has wit, but the constant underlying message is one of success! IVF succeeds! Just keep your legs in the air/take to bed rest/keep thinking smiley happy positive thoughts and it always works! As someone who's been through a few rounds of IVF and ongoing still, it's not that easy for most people. IVF is hard enough without infusing constant messages of false hope-I feel the author is irresponsible in suggesting that IVF can be otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! A Must-Have for IVFers!.......2006-01-09

I am the kind of person who researches and reads EVERYTHING when they are faced with an issue or problem. Needless to say, I have purchased a multitude of IVF books, and this one is one of my favorites. It goes through the IVF process step-by-step, shares sample protocols, and explains ALL the medicines. In fact, I found myself going back and re-reading several parts of the book while in the midst of the IVF process. It's simply a must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Amazing.......2006-11-07

This book is the A++++ must have for treating fertility disorders with chinese medicine. Jane Lyttleton does an EXCELLENT job of combining western knowledge and treatments with traditional chinese medicine. She is extremely thorough and detailed in all pathologies and treatments. AMAZING!

5 out of 5 stars Jampacked full of info and knowledge about TCM and how it correlated to helping achieve a successful pregnancy.......2006-10-02

I was referred to this book by a fellow friend who like me, is trying to conceive a baby over 40. This book talks with detail about how chinese medicine works and in particularly to help "strengthen" our reproduction systems. The information is very clear and detailed and can help anyone starting to explore the benefits of TCM. It enlightens the reader because it never dismisses the Western medical community, but talks about how the Eastern methods of TCM can enhance our already traditionally accepted practice of conventional medicine. It also talks about how TCM works well alone. However, it takes diligence and specialized practitioners to fully incorporate all of this info to practice. Finding a excellent Acupuncturist or Chinese doctor seems integral and the information is amass. I felt I learned quite a bit about Chinese medicine in just one night of reading, and I was already educated in many areas.

If people are still buying it after all these years one would think it of value.

5 out of 5 stars Let it Rot!.......2007-01-20

This was a christmas present which he has alot of enjoyment reading.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic information.......2005-07-16

Sadly, composting has a bit of a bad reputation some places. Many people imagine that you have to wear Birkenstocks and take part in anti-globalization marches, grow your facial hair and bathe infrequently to compost. Nothing could be farther from the truth!
According to most gardeing experts, amending one's soil is just about the most important thing one can do to ensure the health and beauty of a garden. Composting can be an inexpensive, quick and simple way to improve the soil, and it cuts down on the waste taken off to garbage dumps.
Let it Rot! Gives clear, well-written help on understanding how composting works, how you can set up your own composting system, and pitfalls to avoid. After you follow the instructions and see your garden blossom as never before, you'll understand: You don't need to be a hippy to compost your scraps!

5 out of 5 stars Total novice, but the pile is coming along.......2003-11-15

This book is my first on composting, and while it didn't give me the desire to do it, it certainly gave me a great start in figuring it out. It seems to be well worth the read so far.

5 out of 5 stars I'll be a pro at composting by the end of the season.......2002-04-08

This is a great, clear cut, interesting and fun-to-read book! Stu Campbell is able to take what, to newcomers, can be a daunting task and not only present us with the basics to feel comfortable but he also translates some of the scientific "mumbo-jumbo" of how and why compost works into layman's terms. He includes real "recipes" and approaches to try as well as suppling a list (though not nearly complete) of good materials to compost as well as what NOT to use. A short "troubleshooting" chapter called "Things You Might Worry About a Little" is a bit over the top for beginners but is part of what makes this book valuable for the seasoned composter. Let It Rot! is a not-to-technical, well-written, easy-to-read guide that takes the "yuck" out of your composting ideas! Perfect for beginners and a great refresher for near professional composters.

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying.......2007-03-16

This book really got to the heart of disease - diet, lifestyle, exercise and stress management. These aspects of life must be paid attention to if one expects to have a child. If not managed now, how will our current habits affect our child to be? The author provides clear instruction, easy recipes and detailed instructions for the exercises. I just have to wonder how successful following the diet and lifestyle changes can be without acupuncture and herbs, or is that a critical component to success?

This is an amazing book. Well written and a pleasure to read. Covers all of the things that I did to give birth to a gorgeous, perfect child 1 year after being told by Western fertility experts that this could never happen. I LOVE this book. Buy it, go for it ( find an acupuncturist, change your diet, follow the mind-body exercises ) and make sure to pass on the info.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient wisdom for modern miracles.......2007-01-11

This book is an accessible introduction to the practices of Dr. Wu in her clinic. It is very inspiring and encouraging to women struggling with fertility challenges. The author comes through as a wise and radiant woman.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with unique information.......2006-12-05

I've purchased and read a large number of infertilty books (over 25): some good, some useless, and some which offer unique enough information to become a part of my small collection. The rest I give away. This one is a real keeper. Good Chinese medicine diet tips (different from western diet tips) plus exercises, abdominal massage tips, success stories, acupuncture benefits, etc. Highy recommended!

    Book Description

The intent of Essential IVF is to present current issues in clinical IVF that encompass the varied activities of those engaged in this field. By integrating clinical, basic research and laboratory-related aspects of human reproduction, readers with diverse interests should obtain a more complete understanding of the impact, importance and relevance of each in the progress of infertility treatment and an appreciation of whether emerging technologies will or should contribute to this progress in the near future. The topics selected for this volume include research that has begun to explain the origins of different follicular, gamete, embryo and uterine competence as well as specific laboratory procedures and protocols that may have important clinical implications for the generation of developmentally viable embryos. Comprehensive reviews and discussions of past and contemporary studies in clinically-oriented chapters provide a biological and outcome-based context in which current practices and protocols in human IVF may need to be reconsidered.

    Book Description

Ours is an extraordinary time for anyone straight, gay, single, or coupled who’s ever wanted a baby of his or her own. Many aspiring parents now depend on some form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) to fulfill their dreams of starting a family. But as Dr. Diane Ehrensaft points out, parents who conceive with the help of a donor or surrogate often struggle with unforeseen questions. How can you help the child understand where he or she fits into the family and into the world? Exactly who is the mommy, and who is the daddy? How will grandparents and other family members react? What will the donor or surrogate have to say about it? In Mommies, Daddies, Donors, Surrogates, Dr. Ehrensaft addresses these topics and guides readers through a host of other concerns that may arise before, during, and after assisted conception. Provocative, compassionate, and immediately practical, Dr. Ehrensaft's far-ranging inquiry raises issues no one affected by ART should ignore.

    5 out of 5 stars Soothing, loving.......2007-07-23

I love this book. I'm reading it slowly to not miss a word. Of the DE books I read this is the first one I feel is non-judgemental, and so very reasonable.
I got it from the library (cautious by the reviews I read here) and am going to buy it just to keep it.
Reading this book is easing a lot of the stress I'm going through on this path. Once issues are named and identified they lose their ability to subliminally torment you. The book is respectful enough to leave it to the reader to look at things her/his own way, after helping in laying out the issues.
This book is written by a psychoanalyst and will be most enjoyed by people familiar with psychoanalysis.

    4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-09-02

I'm not sure what the ambivalence, and negative reaction, of the previous reviewers was based on. Or what the more recent reviewer was actually looking for that didn't get resolved. I find this a very insightful book that presses parents and others to investigate the emotional issues they're likely to encounter over time as the parent of a donor-conceived child. Especially the very real emotional issues of a couple in which one might consider the other more "his" or "hers" based on biological ties; cultural beliefs that many of us grow up with that need to be addressed with donor-assisted conception. Certainly to think that these issues won't come up, or are better left undiscussed, does a disservice to the child and the couple (or single parent, which is discussed as well).

I agree that it's a wide-ranging book, which might seem a bit daunting at times, particularly for those looking for practical solutions rather than discussion. But since most clinics don't discuss many of these mental health concerns with clients, I think this is a highly valuable book that prospective parents can read in the privacy of their bedroom as they contemplate and consider the choices ahead.

As author of "Choosing Single Motherhood," I know many women make conscious choices about becoming a parent. I think the kind of issues raised in Ehrensaft's book are honest, real and important for anyone to keep in mind when pursuing parenthood in non-traditional ways.

1 out of 5 stars No help at all.......2006-08-29

This book does not seek to answer any questions because as far as the author is concerned she has all of the answers. Her agenda quickly becomes clear in the first chapter, and while she is entitled to her opinion, she should not misrepresent it as unbiased source of information. Additionally, I have never found a piece of writing more insensitive and plainly cruel to those of us who are reproductively challenged. Consequently, not only did the book not answer any of my questions or address my doubts, far from helping reach a resolution, it only kicked me while I was already down. I don't recommend this title to anyone facing fertility issues.

    3 out of 5 stars It's okay.............2006-07-14

Nothing that great. The writing is very inclusive of EVERY situation, so it's gets a little confusing. You have to kind of pick through the stuff that applies to your situation...But when you do find the stuff that applies to you, it's pretty good stuff.
