Book Description

The field of synthetic membrane science and technology is an active, growing field involving an interdisciplinary mixture of polymer chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering. Some membrane processes are reasonably well understood, and have been commercialised for some period of time. Other membrane processes have only recently been employed in commercial applications, and still other processes are only in formative research stages.
This volume gives a comprehensive compendium of the basic principles in the field of synthetic membranes. The following topics are covered: basic aspects of membrane processes; materials and material properties; membrane preparation and characterisation; membrane transport; concentration polarisation and fouling; process and module design. The second edition of this well-established text has been considerably expanded and updated, and many chapters now contain sections giving solved and unsolved problems.
Audience: This book is recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a comprehensive reference for engineers, scientists, and technical management.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for someone who interested in membrane.......2007-03-09

This book is about basic and principle of membrane. Many researchers and theacher used it. Someone said this book is a standard book for anybody who make membrane.it's included basic and some process and some applications...

5 out of 5 stars More then basic..........2001-04-21

As a graduate student in engineering I find my self in a rush to acquire knowledge as fast as possible. Membrane processes for water treatment is an emerging science that have a great potential to be the future's main process for drinking water production. 'Basic Principles of Membrane Technology' is more than a basic book! It thoroughly go from the basics of membrane materials and manufacturing through transport in membranes, membrane processes and membrane fouling. Everything you need to know an beyond!

    Book Description

The use of membranes is increasing throughout industry, and particularly the water industry. The municipal water industry, which is concerned with the provision of clean drinking water to the population, is a big user and developer of membrane technology which helps it to provide water free of pathogens, chemicals, odours and unwanted tastes. Municipal authorities also have to process sewage and waste water, and membranes are used extensively in these processes.
The MBR Book covers all important aspects of Membrane BioReactors in water and waste water treatment, from the fundamentals of the processes via design principles to MBR technologies. Industrial case studies help interpret actual results and give pointers for best practice. Useful appendices provide data on commercial membranes and international membrane organisations.

          Book Description

Human hair is the subject of a remarkably wide range of scientific investigations. Its chemical and physical properties are of importance to the cosmetics industry, forensic scientists, and to biomedical researchers. The fourth edition of this book confirms its position as the definitive monograph on the subject. Previous editions of this book were recognized as "concise and thorough" Features of the Fourth Edition: * New information on chemical damage from permanent waving, bleaching and sunlight and how to minimize or prevent this damage. * A new view of the cause of dandruff is presented with new supporting data. This view suggests new approaches for both treatment and for marketing of scalp care products. * The latest information on the science of hair growth and hair growth stimulating agents is provided, including Propecia. * A new section has been added on skin and eye irritation and skin sensitization from ingredients used in hair care, and a model has been provided to predict relative skin irritation of shampoos. * New micrographs on "normal hair fiber shape variations" and how fiber shape can influence chemical and physical interactions of hair fibers will be covered. * Additional material is now included on hair straightening. (Journal of the American Chemical Society), "an invaluable resource" (Canadian Forensic Science Society Journal), and "highly recommended" (Textile Research Journal). Chemical and Physical Behavior of Human Hair is a teaching guide and reference volume for cosmetic chemists and other scientists in the hair products industry, academic researchers studying hair and hair growth, textile scientists, and forensic specialists.

            Book Description

Edited by the most prominent person in the field and top researchers at US pharmaceutical companies, this is a unique resource for drug developers and physiologists seeking a molecular-level understanding of ion channel pharmacology.

After an introduction to the topic, the authors evaluate the structure and function of ion channels, as well as related drug interaction. A section on assay technologies is followed by a section each on calcium, sodium and potassium channels. Further chapters cover genetic and acquired channelopathies, before the book closes with a look at safety issues in ion channel drug development.

For medicinal and pharmaceutical chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists and those working in the pharmaceutical industry.
