Customer Reviews:
still germane for an important family of chips.......2005-07-19
Clements demonstrates that the 68000 assembler language is a very logical and clean one. With none of that segmented memory nonsense of the 1980s Intel architecture. Having a flat address space makes your coding far simpler. Perhaps you might not appreciate this from a reading of Clements, if you have never had any experience with the other chip set. But those who have will certainly thank Motorola.
As this review is written in 2005, the 68000 family is still selling well. It has a heavy presence in embedded microcontrollers and real time systems, for example. So if your company wants you to code in the 68000, the book is still germane.

Good guide........2001-07-25
I am involved in the design of a VME CPU card based on this microcontroller.
The basics of the microcontroller and software aspects are well discussed.
Surely a must for those working with this microcontroller.
Worth Getting Before Starting a 68332 Design.......1999-01-26
This book gives a different look at the 68332. Most of the information is available in Motorola's documents but this is a good cross reference and introduces additional ways of looking at the complicated microprocessor. The book covers the "A" mask and not the "G" Mask as it was written in 1991 maybe before the "G" Mask was available.
Some of the sections give insights into the operation that are not clearly discussed in the Motorola documentation. For this alone I think it is worth purchasing.
Be advised that the hardware development systems shown have been replaced by better equipment since 1991. However the basic processor has not changed and there are insights to be gained by study of this Reference. Many assembly language examples are given throughtout the text.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book !.......2000-11-03
I purchased this book about a year ago, and I have now read it pretty-much cover-to-cover. It is an excellent book. What I have found is that there are very few books on the market that cater to the individual who wants to build a microcomputer, starting from square one. This book caters to that market. If you are trying to build a Motorola 68000 system "from scratch", this book is for you. Be aware that there are a few pieces of information in the book that seem to be out of date. For instance, in the "working system" Mr. Antonakos describes how to build, he recommends an easier-to-use version of a UART that was apparently meant for the old Motorola 6800. The serial communications chip he recommends is now obsolete. However, as I have plowed my way through the morass of parts sellers and other charlatans, I have found that MANY parts are obsolete, even ones listed in the current catalogs of some of the biggest, most reputable IC distributors. Antonakos cannot be blamed for that. If you are interested in "building from scratch" with a Motorola 68000, also be aware of another data point : the 68000 seems to have an obituary written on it. My nose tells me Motorola is going to pull the carpet out from under it, maybe soon, or maybe not for another couple of years. In any case, it doesn't seem like the 68000 is going to be around for long. If you want to do it (build your own 68000 system), get this book and do it now !
outstanding "pratical" text on the 68000.......1999-12-04
This is a very good introduction about the 68000 from a pratical point of view, both at the assembly language level and at the hardware level.Only bad point is the accluded diskette which i found very tricky to use.The style of exposition of mr Antonakos is outstanding and very easy to follow.A great introduction to the 68000.

Book Description
The Third Edition of MICROPROCESSOR SYSTEMS DESIGN covers the design of systems that use Motorola's 68000 family of microprocessors (including the latest generation of 68000 chips), and addresses both hardware and software considerations. Professor Clements' emphasis is practical, providing the necessary detail to enable students to design actual, working systems. The author covers hardware and programming comprehensively in an accessible writing style. A new chapter on the C programming language and its relationship to assembly language will appeal to instructors whose courses emphasize software aspects of systems design. A bound-in CD-ROM contains a 68000 cross-assembler and simulator, a C cross-compiler, fragments of the 68000 assembly code from the book, the 68000 and 68020 instruction sets, and documentation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent clear book on microprocessor systems design.......2006-08-27
This book makes all things clear about designing systems controlled by microprocessors and uses the Motorola 68000 family of microprocessors as an example. It is full of clear examples and many exercises for the student, and shows details of both the hardware and programming aspects of microprocessor system design, making it ideal for engineers who are interested in the subject. The book starts with an overview of the microcomputer in general, and shows how the microprocessor and its accessories control the larger microcomputing device. Next, the author introduces the reader specifically to the Motorola 68000 family of microprocessors and their respective architectures and features.
Next the author tackles an art that is usually passed down by word of mouth from master to apprentice - how to program a microprocessor and its peripheral devices using the C programming language as well as assembly language. This is followed by chapters on memories, exception handling versus interrupts, and coprocessors and caches.
The next few chapters are on the external devices that are usually a necessity for a microprocessor controlled system - parallel and serial ports, external timer devices, special devices to control IEEE-488 buses, and special buses such as the VMEbus and Nubus. Actual existing peripheral devices are used in the examples. There are plenty of circuit diagrams and code snippets in both assembly language and C to show how the various pieces of a microcomputer are assembled to make a working system.
Although today RISC designs based on "microprocessor cores" power the vast majority of mass-produced computing devices, the approach to creating the components of these core-based microcomputers is basically the same as it was in the days when we used to wire-wrap a 10MHz 68000 system together. Thus, learning the art of microprocessor system design is something any engineer interested in digital design should know. This book is an excellent source for learning that art. The following is the table of contents:

Practical on microprocessor!!.......2004-11-17
Unlike many other microprocessor books which mainly focus on programming, this book provides practical and detail knowledge on hardware interfacing. These including design of address decoder and mechanical characteristic of microprocessor buses.
For student or fresh engineer who want to get the real thing works, this is the book.
Great microprocessor book.......2000-05-18
This book presents an excellent intro to the design of microprocessor systems using the very powerful and easy-to-learn Motorola 68000 family. It concentrates on hardware design/interfacing, programming, timing issues, memory mapping and address decoding, serial I/O and peripherals. Covers all the important issues. The information is of high quality and very well written. The reader should have a knowledge of binary/hex number systems and basic digital design as prerequisites. Comes with cd-rom containing software tools. I recommend this book highly.
A very good 68000 book for EE, CS, computer engineering........1999-02-20
This book is suitable for a semester course in microprocessor systems. It has good coverage of hardware and software topics. I use it in a senior/master's course which studies the 68000 and SPARC as comparative CISC/RISC architectures. The book comes with a CDROM including a PC-based 68000 simulator for readers who do not have access to real 68000 hardware.
Good book if you've got a TI-92.......1998-08-01
This is especially handy as the 3rd edition has a cd-rom with a cross-compiler!

Good introduction to Motorola microprocessors.......2000-02-14
MacKenzie starts at the basics, even including a "Chapter 0" review of such basics as converting between bases and digital logic. About half the book is the 68000 programmer's guide. The rest is Mackenzie's explanations and examples. Chapter 5 in particular offers many excellent examples that help put the entire preceding book into perspective. Educators will find that students will learn much better if the class includes a hands-on lab. The book includes a disk including a compiler, linker, and terminal emulator to download assembly programs via RS232 from a PC.
MacKenzie also offers hardware kits for experiments, including a complete MC68000 board, hex keypad, and various switch/LED combinations.
NOTE: there are several confusing mistakes in the book, particularly Appendix B, p.368, with the MOVE Byte command. It is very important to visit MacKenzie's web page for release notes.

Book Description
Reflecting the most recent changes in the ever advancing Motorola Microcontroller market, this leading book for the Motorola family of microprocessors remains at the forefront of its field. Discussing today's most significant trends in the microcomputer and microcontroller worlds, it builds upon traditional coverage of 8-bit technology to include the exciting applications of Motorola's microcontrollers - the 68HC11 family - and now goes beyond to include many new high-performance designs. Examines the fundamental concepts of the 68000 families of Microprocessors that are used as the basis of many new Microcontrollers, and offers complete chapter coverage on computer arithmetic and logic operations; accumulator and memory reference; assembly language for the 6800 family; interrupts and timing; system debugging; real-world applications and interfacing techniques, and much more. Now considers the many new developments in the area of memory, and includes new chapters on the 68HC08 family; the 16-bit 68HC12 MCU (with in-depth analyses on the revolutionary new system development methods); plus the radically new RISC type of MCU, the MPC505, that uses a 32-bit Power PC CPU.
Customer Reviews:
Poptastic delineation of a complex matter.......1999-09-02
Bannatyne's triumphant return to form - he fries up explanations quicker than a Cheltenham Sausage bar. Its time that great mind dissected the full impact of fudge buckets on post modern society.
Celtic 5 Rangers 1.......1999-06-25
Without the use of high performance computers such as the type described in this book, it is highly unlikely that Lubo Moravcik would have been able to impart his influence on the gubbing of the huns in such an unequivocal manner.
It was a barry gam indeed.......1999-02-18
Real good
