Book Description

For the 11th edition of BIOLOGY: UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, Cecie Starr and Ralph Taggart made it their goal to "solve" some of the toughest Introductory Biology course challenges. We introduce a new issues-oriented approach with engages students in current, motivating biological topics; a built-in cross-referencing system for key topics; and, most importantly, time-saving media resources for instructors. Show students how biology matters - Opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens. Link concepts from chapter to chapter - Students often have a difficult time with this, so the authors created a "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another. Monitoring students' progress with ease - BiologyNow™ offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor gradebook (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn™ on TurningPoint® content and software. Easier lecture prep - The new PowerLecture tool integrates all chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. This "buffet" of media resources-arranged by chapter section is at your fingertips. Just cut and paste what you want into your lecture file.

2 out of 5 stars repetitive.......2005-07-17

This book is useful and contains a lot of good information, but could have been half as thick as it is. Everything is summarized more than once, in side-bars and at the ends of chapters, and key points are even repeated more than once in the text itself. The result is patchy text that is difficult to navigate and next to impossible to find information quickly in.

1 out of 5 stars Biological Detour.......2005-04-20

This is the book I had in my college biology course. I find this book to be quite inconsistent. While it has it's bright spots and explains some things very well, it is one of those books where you end up having to hunt for the information. Result? You spend a great deal of time deciphering the book which has the information strewn everywhere in a fashion that's not entirely organized. Not to mention the fact that it stops dead cold in the middle of explaining a concept in order to go into great detail about another related concept. Then suddenly it jolts the reader back to what it was talking about beforehand. A good and elementary example of this is in chapter 2 where they discuss hydrogen bonding. It veers off and on from what the topic is supposed to be. It would be more helpful to cut to the chase and leave the lengthly prose out of the book. As another reviewer pointed out, the fact that the book has so many different authors is just ASKING for the final product to be inconsistent. This book is not worth the 120 dollars they expect you to pay for it.

1 out of 5 stars Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life.......2003-05-29

This book is far too wordy and repetitive and could have been half as thick. It weights over 4 pounds and is very heavy to carry around.

Very often the point of a sentence is lost in the verbiage. Some basic explanations are repeated several times, whilst many more important things are left unexplained.

Many of the pictures appear to have been chosen because they are 'cool' rather than relevant to the text and just sidetrack the reader.

Some of the examples are incredibly stupid. One, at p. 18, under the heading, "Critical Thinking", 2., gives the story of a turkey that learned to equate footsteps with the provision of food. One one day the footsteps led to the turkey having its head chopped off. The text explains that the turkey learned the hard way. In fact the turkey learned nothing, as by then it was dead.

The glossary is inadequate and misses out too many new and important terms.

The answers given to the quizzes do not always agree with the text, for example, Chapter 2 Self Quiz Question 1 asks what charge is carried by an electron. The correct answer, as given at page 24, is "Negative," but the answer list in Appendix III gives it incorrectly as "Positive." Many instructors lift questions and answers from the book for on-line exams. Does the student then give the incorrect answer as per Appendix III to get the point or the correct answer, knowing that it will very likely be graded as "wrong"? Another example is in the quiz to Chapter 5, question 2.

Looking at the list of credits, it lookas if too many people have had a hand in the book and as a result it has been spoilt.

I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Basic.......2003-01-08

Extremely basic with inconsistant layout. Entire sections will be printed with a blue background, for example, that look more like a special topics box then text. In several cases the text reuses its stock photos in several unrelated sections. The text illustrates points that clearly do not need illustration (Do you know what water looks like? There is a photo of it if you need it. ) and ignores others (the beta and alpha linkages of glucose) after dicussing them. Good for high school student concepts but unacceptably uncomprehensive for college.

5 out of 5 stars Homeschoolers Take Note!.......2000-09-19

This is a fantastic text for homeschooling. Each concept is introduced, discussed, and wrapped up in a 2-page spread. This is *not* the dry bio text you remember from high school. It is fascinating enough that I find myself stealing it from my daughter's room. Perfect for a science-loving homeschooler who is hungry for advanced texts at an earlier age because the setup is conducive to parental participation and discussion. However, be advised it is written from an evolutionary point of view if you are inclined to avoid this emphais. And of course there's that really cool picture of the monkey fighting the cheetah ;)

Book Description

This introductory text assumes little prior scientific knowledge on the part of the student. It includes sufficient information for some shorter introductory botany courses open to both majors and nonmajors, and is arranged so that certain sections can be omitted without disrupting the overall continuity of the course. Stern emphasizes current interests while presenting basic botanical principles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Initial Botany Course Text.......2006-09-15

I find this text to be an excellent resource for a college student who is beginning to study botany. While the first three chapters provide an excellent review of entry-level biology concepts, the remaining chapters review and enhance botany understanding. The text provides excellent graphical representations and is easy, yet interesting, to read. I recommend both this text and the lab manual. Professor Stern had reviewers who were obviously proficient in both content area and in publishing in the english language. Kudos!

4 out of 5 stars continuing education student.......2006-01-30

Think the book is a good text book for introductory botany--however sometimes the authors include so much detail (i.e. in the cell biology chapters) that it obstructs understanding--no one in the class was able to understand these chapters (and we have a pretty diverse and capable group). I really like the effort to utilize the web, but believe much more content could be part of this beginning effort. Also, the citations to web sites are already out of date with web pages no longer working etc. It would be easy to keep this updated ON THE WEB i would think. Great illustrations in the text.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great herp book!.......2007-08-04

It is a great herp book, with lots of information. But i guess there are newer version of it on the market...

4 out of 5 stars Still Missing Some Details and Organization (otherwise very good).......2007-02-21

This is generally a VERY good book! Still, given minimal initial knowledge of Herpetology, the book can be somewhat ambiguous and disorganized and is missing a few essential details such as habitat and food for families of reptiles and amphibians in the necessary chapters. It requires more photographs and better taxonomic organization for clarity.

5 out of 5 stars Educational.......2005-02-22

This book covers everything from the basics of herps, to the more advance steps in classification, breeding, and observing. In the most case this book is not a good reference guide for those with a minor understanding of the biology of reptiles, however, for those who know the basics, and are interested enough to continue their learning experiance on an advnaced level, this book is a must. Used in colleges as college text, anyone in the herpetological field in college needs this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-03-25

This book is for expierienced herpers only .It has almost evrything you need to know.If you are interested in learning more about herps.I give this a 5 if you are a expiereienced reader.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible layout!!!.......2005-12-31

I bought this book for my plant biology class. Even though I was required to only study about 3/4 of it, I read the entire thing from cover to cover. If you want to find out about plants and the natural world, take a course with this book or just buy it and read it like a good non-fiction book. The layout and format are very modern and appealing. There are sections on ecology, which are very important in understanding what is happening to our environment right now. Plus, the book doubles as a plant reference/gardening book because it has a monster appendix with stats and care information on tons of common and rare plants you might grow at home. Wonderful book, you won't be disappointed if you are curious about natural science!

5 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Botany Text.......2004-02-07

Introductory Plant Biology is a classic and continues to improve with each edition. I've used several editions and have always been pleased to see that it is one of the few textbooks that actually contains pertinent and updated information. The artwork is easy-to-understand. The straightforwardness and clarity of cell biology, metabolic schemes, genetics, and especially life cycles are what make this book a success. This 9th Edition of Introductory Plant Biology is the best yet. I've used several college botany textbooks and this is the most straightforward, accurate, error-free, and current book on the market. There are some new authors - Drs. Jansky and Bidlack - who have joined with Stern in this edition. They write like Stern and that makes the book flow very well. The new cell, metabolism, genetics, and biotechnology chapters bring the book up-to-date. And, as expected, Stern et al. have put together the most current taxonomic treatment of plant-related kingdoms on the market. This has been, and continues to be, the only botany textbook that my students read and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Students Like this Book!.......2004-02-07

This is a botany text that students actually read. The appendix offers additional information on medicinal plants and gardening. Many non-traditional students like the book for reference at home. Among textbooks on the market, this is one of the most useful books after students complete the course. I kept my book and use it frequently for gardening tips.

5 out of 5 stars Revision much better!.......2000-03-09

I've given Dr. Stern another chance (since my review of his 1994 version) and he came through with an excellent revised basic botany text. I'm using it for my course and will continue using it.

5 out of 5 stars Introductory Plant Biology, 8th Edition.......2000-01-25

This text offers students a solid introduction to the plant sciences. At an undergraduate level, the text material is well complimented by diagrams, photos, and drawings. Each chapter begins with a chapter outline and ends with review questions, discussion questions, chapter summaries, and additional readings. The on-line student resources (available via McGraw-Hill Higher Education site) offer weblinks, chapter quizzes, flash cards, and other study aids. This latest edition has an additional chapter on biomes, an expanded biotechnology chapter, etc. I did not find chapter 22, the gymnosperms, to be full of the inaccuracies stated by a previous reviewer. Cycads are plainly listed as the cycadophyta division; ginkgo in ginkgophyta, etc. While no text is perfect, this introductory text comes close and is my chosen text for both the continuing education and the undergraduate botany courses that I teach.

With increasing frequency, graduate programs in the biomedical sciences are offering formalized training in the principles of responsible scientific conduct. Until now, there has been no single true textbook that can be used to teach this important subject. This text was developed to cover broad areas of scientific integrity and to meet the needs of today's graduate students and scientists working in the biomedical sciences. This comprehensive book provides a thorough scientific foundation on the growth and care of plants common to all horticultural commodities. Continuing in the tradition of the first edition, it incorporates the principles behind the techniques described in other ''how-to'' horticulture texts. By providing readers with a thorough grounding in the science of horticulture, it successfully prepares them for more specialized studies in nursery management, floriculture, landscaping, vegetable and fruit science.

I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Preece as an instructor for the General Horticulture class when I started college. This textbook is an invaluable tool for students who want to further their education

5 out of 5 stars Titles are decieving..........2003-08-24

This book is by no means basic as the subtitle "an introductory textbook" states. In fact, this is one of the most detailed, and comprehensive books available on the subject. Covering everything from total plant anatomy all the way to pathology, nutrition, propagation, and beyond, it is an invaluable resource for any hort or botany student. Hobbyists will also find this book invaluably enlightening, as it can help them answer common questions such as why leaves on tomato plants are turning yellow.

5 out of 5 stars Great book invaluable to horticultural students.......2000-11-15

I have recently completed a BSc (HONS) in horticulture and found this book very useful. I used many text during my degree, however this was the one I refered to most. I think that students particularily in the initial stages of a degree or diploma course would find the book most valuable. Many areas of interest are covered e.g. biological control of plant pathogens, irrigation and many other areas that may not be apparent from the books title. There are many good pictures and diagrams and each chapter has useful references. This book will also be of interest to horticultural professionals.

5 out of 5 stars The first of its kind.......2003-11-21

I'm giving this book a high rating because it fills a niche for which no other text exists: An absolute beginner's guide to patch-clamping. Yes, you could read Neher & Sakmann's hefty "Single Channel Recording" but, for the complete novice patch-clamper, it's a bit overwhelming.

So, you walk into a patch-clamp lab, there's a million different things on the rig and you're feeling very confused. The microscope is much more complex than the microscope you remember from high school, there's cabling literally everywhere, and everybody keeps mentioning how important it is not to disturb the "voodoo" shielding.

Where do you start? What do all those instruments do? Will I ever patch a cell on my own? This is the book for you.

The book does an excellent job explaining the main components on a patch-clamp rig (and advice for setting up your own if you're just starting up a lab) and gives detailed instructions on whole-cell patch clamp techniques. (I have not evaluated the single-channel techniques but they too seem quite well written.) Also, many simple "equivalent circuit" diagrams are given so that you can understand what you're measuring. You will patch successfully after reading this book!

My only criticism is that the book is a bit skimpy on what to do after you've got the cell patched. Only a few voltage-clamp techniques are explored and there is very little on experiments using dual recordings.

Otherwise, it's an excellent book. If you're new to patch-clamping, this is (literally) the only book for you.
