Design and Development of Medical Electronic Instrumentation: A Practical Perspective of the Design, Construction, and Test of Medical Devices

Book Description
This well-established text describes the principles, applications and design of the medical instrumentation most commonly used in hospitals. Because equipment changes with time, the authors stress fundamental principles of operation and general types of equipment. They avoid detailed descriptions and photographs of specific models. Design principles are emphasized so that a scientist with only some background in electronics can gain enough information to design instruments that may not be commercially available. Since biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field, the authors have provided varied healthcare industry applications for each type of instrument.
Customer Reviews:
This book is just a big table of contents.......2006-11-08
The book scans through many topics related to Bomedical Instrumentation. It gives you just a general idea of what this is about, but if you want to get serious details about anything mentioned, you will need a second source for everything, as nothing is explained or treated in enough detail. Wikipedia is more informative than this book for many of the topics.
For example, the chapter about operational amplifiers is just a useless list of what the amps can do, but nothing really useful and complete on how to use them. The chapter about biopotentials is a bit better, though incomplete. The description of electrodes is incomplete. You just get a huge list of articles you should read to really learn something out of your time and effort.
For the amount of topics it pretends to cover and the thin detail offererd, this book seems like a big table of contents to me, not a reference at all. I don't know of a better book on Biomed Instrumentation, though. I should write one =)
Convoluted and confusing.......2005-01-09
This book is not the best as a textbook. Might be useful as a refresher or reference, but that's not what I had to use it for. It is wordy and is sometimes too detailed and sometimes not enough. It has no consistency, thanks to numerous authors. Also, the material is often outdated. Time to look for a different book.
if(you=clinical engineer){get it=true}else{think again };.......2004-12-30
Seeing it from clinical engineer eyes is different than seeing it from a biomedical engineer eyes; however, it is not as thoroughly covers topics as it seems from the author's repetition in the field.
From the clinical engineer point of view it is such an encyclopedia that will keep his job. It covers a lot of subjects and also presents a lot of information like what materials/alloys are used to build that specific electrode/sensor. Well, it doesn't justify the choice of those materials in that sensor except in some general models which might be somehow confusing! Also, as a clinical engineer, you will find a nice chapter on electrical safety which might be relevant to your career.
In the end, reading this book, I guess, is the way to success as a clinical engineer.
From a biomedical engineer point of view it lacks of any kind of details. One rather see one chapter of this book in a 1000 pages volume presented thoroughly.
From a student point of view, it depends on your professor and the course as well. As a student I see it lacks of examples. You wouldn't find it as you might think. This is not your way to make it high, your GPA! not head,of course :) !
I guess, it is made particularly for clinical engineers.
Electronic Medical Instrumentation.......2003-12-30
As a coursebook, I found 'Medical Instrumentation' to be a sound survey of electrical medical diagnostic instrumentation. The book does review electrical therapeutic medical instrumentation; however, it's coverage is not as thorough.
This is an excellent resource for engineers planning to specialize in medical device design.
A good understanding of physiology is necessary to fully utilize the Medical Instrumentation text. If you have little medical background, I recommend Review of Medical Physiology (by William Ganong) as a companion.
Could be More Simple.......2002-03-22
Explains dynamic characteristics of circuits very well. It has a ton of information - which can be too much. If you are just starting out in a course on instrumentation, I would recommend, "Principles of Bioinstrumentation" by Normann. His book is much simpler. Ideally, you should get both,..., it depends what level you are at (as a 4th year bioengineering student, I preferred the simple version...)

Update drastically overdue.......2007-08-25
While I consider this book one of the cornerstones of BMET education, a comprehensive update is very overdue. In addition to this edition, I also posess the first edition of the Brown and Carr book, and while that edition is considerably smaller, most of the information, figures, and photographs are reproduced in the fourth edition.
Granted, much of the information is still valid, but it does not truly represent the state of the field today. Their cause would be helped if they showed more accurate representations of what constitutes standard equipment of today. Additionally the authors spend a valuable amount of time explaining the theories behind measurement methods and electronic theories, the technology described is invariably that of the 1970s with little time or attention spent on what is in use now.
An aspiring Biomedical Equipment Technician should read this book, but should bear in mind that it will only go so far in preparing them for the modern day BMET field. I would love to see Brown and Carr throw out all of the figures and photographs for the fifth edition, just to make them actually re-visit the state-of-the-art.
Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update.......2000-02-16
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile. The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update. Although this is the third edition (1998), almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters but again far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating.

Introduction to Biomedical Equipment Technology (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0675209439 |
Book Description
Pennsylvania State University, Wilkes-Barre. Textbook for biomedical equipment technologists and technicians.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction for Biomedical Engineering Technology.......2000-04-23
Biomedical Engineering Technology aims to educate future professionals that will work with medical equipment ensuring their correct calibration and safety.
This book is an excellent introduction to this profession at the same time that provides a good overview of the basic measurement principles and techniques. The book covers important issues such as safety, transducers and the analysis of the main pieces of medical equipment.
However, the book does not go in-depth into the details of the medical instrumentation. Some of the topics analyzed in the book, such as oscillators, power amplifiers, etc.,, can be found in any general electronics book and their space could be better used by more detailed explanations focused on medical equipment.
Nevertheless, Aston's book is a good introduction to the field.

Book Description
Biomedical engineers need a resource that helps them understand the architecture and function of basic analog electronic circuits used for signal conditioning in biomedical instrumentation. Analysis and Application of Analog Electronic Circuits to Biomedical Instrumentation explains the function and design of signal conditioning systems using analog ICs, circuits that enable ECG, EEG, EMG, ERG, tomographic images, biochemical spectrograms, and other crucial medical applications. The text demonstrates how op amps are the keystone of modern analog signal conditioning systems design, and illustrates their use in isolation and instrumentation amplifiers, active filters, and numerous biomedical instrumentation systems and subsystems. It examines the properties of the ideal op amp, and applies this model to the analysis of various circuits. The book also explains basic mathematical tools used to describe noise and its propagation through linear systems, and provides a basic description of the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio by signal averaging and linear filtering. By explaining structure and function of the "building blocks" of biomedical systems, the author illustrates the importance of signal conditioning systems in the devices that gather and monitor patientsí critical medical information.

Book Description
The bacterium Escherichia coli – E. coli for short – has long been the organism of choice for unraveling biochemical pathways, deciphering the genetic code, learning how DNA is replicated and read, and even for manufacturing proteins of commercial interest. For some thirty years, it also has been a model for studying the molecular biology of behavior. E. coli swims in a purposeful manner, propelled by long thin helical filaments, each driven at its base by a reversible rotary engine. As a microscopic organism immersed in an aqueous environment, it has mastered physical constraints utterly different from any that we know, devising sensors, comparators, and motors on the nanometer scale.
This cross-disciplinary monograph describes these feats in a manner accessible to scientists, engineers, and others not trained in microbiology who would like to learn more about living machines. It treats the history of the subject, the physiology, physics, biochemistry and genetics, largely from first principles. It is all about a small but remarkably sophisticated friend who lives in your gut.
Topics discussed include:
How does E. coli move about?
How do cells decide whether life is getting better or worse?
What is the machinery that makes this behavior possible?
How is the construction of this machinery programmed?
How does this machinery work?
What remains to be discovered?

Provides a great framework for Biomedical Technology Strateg.......1998-06-27
Dr. Sapienza has developed and adequately communicated a framework for Biomedical R&D Technology strategy development. The book is rich with definition of many concepts for understanding technology and it's place in the firm. Of particular value is the framework provided for understanding the competitive environment and it's turbulence, which makes simpler the identification of key technologies for the firm to value. In all, this book is a great introduction for individuals in the Biomedical, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnology worlds for devising a robust means for understanding their own firms technology identity, and learning about ways to develop and implement a technology strategy.
