Customer Reviews:
An Essential Microbiology Reference.......2007-03-23
This is an excellent resource for biochemical pathways, relationships, and diagrams of prokaryotic physiology. The written material is particularly lucid, which is greatly appreciated. While the diagrams are simple and in black-and-white print, their reduced complexity lends clarity to the concepts illustrated. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the microbial sciences at the upper-undergraduate level and beyond.
A difficult but useful book.......2005-08-01
Although it seems impossible to have just one text on the huge field of microbial physiology, this book makes a very valiant effort to be just that. The details are painstakingly researched, the text is concise and clear (no fluff anywhere!), and for such a small book, the author does a masterful job of presenting a huge amount of useful information.
Of course, every book has its downfalls, the main one of this book being its lack of helpful illustrations. Sometimes you just MUST HAVE some help visually to understand something (e.g. mixed acid fermentation, sporulation) and this book often didn't offer that. (Even if there WAS a figure, it was so hard to decipher that you'd be better off with nothing at all.) Also, some huge areas of microbial physiology were completely left out like bacterial stress response.
Overall, not the best but not the worst. It's certainly not a waste of money, but you might want to have some sort of companion book to supply your diagrams and illustrations.
Good information, poor illustrations.......1998-12-22
I used this text as a supplement for my microbial physiology class and found the explantions good, if not complete. The problem I had was that the graphic representations used to show varying processes were either very lacking, or completely absent. Most good science texts use detailed illustrations and colored ink. This text provides neither and would probably serve the more experienced bacterial physiologist as a good reference.

Book Description
Proteases are enzymes that essentially "eat" protein. Without proteases, infectious organisms cannot properly mount an attack against a host. It is for this reason that proteases have become popular targets for drug discovery. Research has shown that if you can inhibit the protease, you can defend against the invading microbe. The defense against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is the best-documented case of the efficacy of protease inhibitors. Researchers are now trying to deploy this strategy against several infectious agents. This book gives information that is useful in that search.
Proteases of Infectious Agents collects reviews from leading experts describing the latest information on the properties of key enzymes from a variety of viruses, fungi, and parasites. Each chapter provides the critical facts needed to initiate a drug discovery effort in that particular area.
Key Features
* Includes information on the basic biology and function of proteases
* Provides global survey of current research efforts in protease inhibitors
* Illustrates how structure-based drug design targets effective and selective compounds
* Highlights important diseases that provide economically important targets
* Describes the role of proteases as important new targets for drug discovery

Book Description
This concise yet comprehensive text surveys the field of bacterial metabolism in terms useful to students and researchers. Emphasis is on those metabolic reactions occurring only in bacteria. Thus, the book describes in detail the energy metabolism of the various groups of bacteria. In addition it examines pathways used by bacteria for the degradation of organic compounds, the synthesis of cellular consituents, the regulation of bacterial metabolism and the fixation of molecular nitrogen. The general arrangement of the first edition has been retained. However, it has been thoroughly revised and updated in recognition of the rapid progress of research in this field. Readers will also appreciate the increased emphasis on membrane-associated processes. From the review of the second edition: "If there is a better textbook in its fields, I'm not aware of it, and I feel the book deserves a place on the shelf of any serious student of microbiology." -ASM News

Book Description
Yeasts are the world's premier industrial micro-organisms. In addition to their wide exploitation in the production of foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals, yeasts also play significant roles as model eukaryotic cells in furthering our knowledge in the biological and biomedical sciences. In order for modern biotechnology to fully exploit the activities of yeasts, it is essential to appreciate aspects of yeast cell physiology. In recent years, however, our knowledge of yeast physiological phenomena has lagged behind that of yeast genetics and molecular biology. Yeast Physiology and Biotechnology redresses the balance by linking key aspects of yeast physiology with yeast biotechnology. Individual chapters provide broad and timely coverage of yeast cytology, nutrition, growth and metabolism - important aspects of yeast cell physiology which are pertinent to the practical uses of yeasts in industry. The final chapter reviews traditional, modern and emerging biotechnologies in which roles of yeasts in the production of industrial commodities and their value in biomedical research are fully discussed. Relevant aspects of classical and modern yeast genetics and molecular biology are fully integrated into the appropriate chapters. This up-to-date and fully referenced book is aimed at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate bioscience students, but will also prove to be a valuable source of information for yeast researchers and technologists.
Customer Reviews:
low value.......2006-09-24
I found this introduction to yeast physiology and biotechnology to be well written and enjoyable to read. That being said, I gave it only 2 stars because the price is absolutely ridiculous. The coverage of most topics is rather superficial (not always a bad thing in an overview-type text, but inexcusable in light of the exorbitant cost of this boook), and the material is rather dated (this being a paperback edition from 1998). I'd definitely recommend that those interested in yeast research check out a copy from a library, or buy it if you can find a used copy for around 25% of the new price, but otherwise it is just not worth it.

Microbial Physiology, 4th Edition
ASIN: 1555811582 |
Book Description
This book describes the exciting advances that have occurred as a result of the transition from the almost purely genetic to the molecular analysis of bacterial development.
Prokaryotic Development focuses on the experimental systems in which a great deal is known about the molecular mechanisms of development. It devotes several chapters to the organisms that have yielded the most mechanistic information, allowing more in-depth coverage of developmental processes than previously available in one place. Introductory chapters describe the biology of each group of organisms in order to place the molecular analysis in a biological and phylogenic perspective.
Accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this volume will be especially helpful in courses dealing with microbial diversity and microbial development. It provides an excellent introduction to current research on prokaryotic development to new investigators and will be a useful reference for more experienced researchers.

Book Description
Antibiotic Resistance: Origins, Evolution, Selection and Spread Chairman: Stuart B. Levy 1997 Over the last 50 years, the rapid increase in the use of antibiotics, not only in people, but also in animal husbandry and agriculture, has delivered a selection unprecedented in the history of evolution. Consequently, society is facing one of its gravest public health problems-the emergence of infectious bacteria with resistance to many, and in some cases all, available antibiotics. This book brings together a multidisciplinary group of experts to discuss this problem. It begins by examining the origins of resistance and goes on to look at how the use of antibiotics in human medicine and farming/agriculture has selected for resistant bacteria. Separate chapters describe the evolution of resistance determinants and how these are spread both within and between bacterial species. Finally, the book contains discussions on strategies for countering the threat of antibiotic resistance. A major re-thinking of our approach to the treatment of infectious diseases is proposed-that antibiotic resistance should be seen as a problem created by the disruption of normal microbial ecology. To restore efficacy to earlier antibiotics, and to maintain the success of new antibiotics that are introduced, we need to use these drugs in a way that ensures an ecological balance that favours the predominance of susceptible bacteria.
