    3 out of 5 stars Great Photography.......2007-03-11

But, I wanted to know more about specifics that take place in the Disney's horticultural arena. Also, why talk about the oldest specimen on property (a yucca in the Mexico pavilion over 250 years old) and then not have a photograph. I am a serious gardener and an avid Disney fan. As an annual passholder I travel down to Walt Disney World 4-6 times a year. As much for their gardens as anything else. I was really hoping for more in depth knowledge of horticulture at Disney. A lot of information in the book is very basic. If you love Disney and love plants then I would still recommend this book for your collection. Just be prepared that you are not going to receive the "inside look" that I anticipated.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Photography.......2007-02-17

As a Disney-holic I can never get enough information on DisneyWorld. This book is beautifully laid out with awesome pictures and great information, even for someone like me who "kills" silk! Great book!

4 out of 5 stars You must have a garden or half of the fun is lost.......2007-01-03

This is quite a nice book to have, but it's not a must-have unless you are fond on gardening and/or would love to have or have a garden. Pics are very nice, but if you're looking for new pictures with unusual points of view, you may find yourself a little disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Disney Secrets Still Secret.......2006-07-14

I was very excited when I received this book; however, the excitement was short lived. The information in the book is very basic. For example, the book devotes two pages to explaining the USDA zones and another two on how to plant a tree. About the only secret was the directions for making the floating planters from Epcot and since I don't have a pond they were interesting, but not too useful.

Also, the pictures were beautiful, but I wished that the plants in the photos and the locations had been identified. It devotes four pages to the Haunted Mansion gardens, but then doesn't identify the variety of the Haunted Mansion's prolific red roses.

Many of the photos were taken at the 2005 Epcot flower show and I enjoyed reliving the experience through the photos.

If you go to WDW and are amazed at the gardens and have no idea how they do it, then this book would be useful. If,however, you have a good basic idea about how the gardens are created and maintained, then you will not discover many secrets with this book.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!.......2006-07-03

After many delays, this book finally arrives in glorious hardcover format. If you've ever been to a Disney park, you'll appreciate that a lot of effort has gone into making it bright and beautiful and green all the year 'round. This book is far more than just a collection of photos showcasing these gardens, although it does serve that function in part, but it is really more of a gardening guide for the reader. It isn't quite like your traditional garden book either, but it does provide handy hints as to how to make your own potting mix, when the right time to plant is and so forth.

After a brief introduction about the history of the parks, the book goes on to cover specific topics such as building an entry arbor; selecting the right plants for your region; planting a productive potting garden; and getting the right colour/border mixture. From there, a great section entitled 'Setting the Mood' examine the ways in which you can re-create the 'feel' of a Haunted Mansion through to Tomorrowland by choosing the right plants and arranging them. The 'International Flora' section concentrates largely on the World Showcase at the Walt Disney Resort in Florida, while the final section, enticingly titled 'Trade Secrets', examines how they make those topiary animals and floral portraits, such as the one at the Main Entrance of Disneyland. Maybe one day your garden will look as good as Disney's - of course, I'd be nice to have the land and money they have too.

Probably for serious Disney Park enthusiasts only, and those that have an eye for gardening. To be honest, I just enjoy looking at the pictures.

    Book Description

Principal Walter Russ just wanted a simple proposal to trim the overgrown trees outside Geyser Creek Middle School. So how did he end up with a wedding (rather than a weeding) proposal from designer Florence Waters? And that's not all . . . Angelo, the new cafeteria chef from Italy, has taken up residence in Mr. N.'s classroom. A sixth-grader has moved into the weeping willow tree behind school. And all the girls in Geyser Creek are boycotting the boys. As Chef Angelo would say: Aye-yi-yi.

Sisters Kate and Sarah Klise have created an uproarious third book in their award-winning Regarding the . . . series. Told in newspaper articles, letters, and secret notes, Regarding the Trees has all the elements of everyone's favorite Klise books--including lots of surprises.

Includes tips on planting a tree and creating a family tree.

I am a 9 year old girl and I think it is a really good book. Very surprising. In this book you have to figure out what is going to happen. It was really funny. I really liked Regarding the Fountain and Regarding the Sink too. Regarding the Trees was my favorite! Read it!

5 out of 5 stars Regarding the book.......2006-01-05

This book was the third in the series. It wasn't as good as the other two but was pretty good. If you like books that are made up of letters you will love this book. It describes things that you wouldn't think could be described in letters. Kate Klise does a great job with her books especially with this series. Sarah Klise also does a great job with the pictures on the front and back cover.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fun Read.......2005-11-17

Though I am well above the 9-12 age group written on the back, I still very much enjoyed this book. Walter Russ, Principal of Geyser Creek Middle School, has a problem. The society of principals are coming to his school to evaluate EVERYTHING! Including the trees. The trees are a wreck and are in dire need of trimming. Florence Waters, president of Flowing Waters inc. and intimate friend of everyone at the Middle School, is asked for a proposal. She mistakes it as a wedding proposal. The plot winds off in many directions at once from boys vs. girls to unexpected marraiges to the tree trimming. Somehow, though, you manage to keep everything straight while reading. One event which spurs the change of relationships between many people is the competition between the towns two restaruant owners - Chef Angelo and Angel Fisch. There will be a cookoff to see who is the better chef. The girls of the town form their own society and support Angel while the boys support Angelo. This gives the book a thicker plot and a flair. I highly reccomend this fun read. I gaurentee you'll smile!

4 out of 5 stars In A Class of Its Own..........2005-11-09

Geyser Creek Middle School principal, Walter Russ - Mr. Russ to you trouble-making students - is scheduled for an evaluation from the school board, sending his teeth chattering. He now has a limited amount of time before the school must be in order, in an attempt to ace his review, and look great in front of the superintendent. The problem? The trees on the school campus are horrible, and could easily be labeled as a health hazard. So Mr. Russ enlists the help of designer Florence Waters to give him a hand. Unfortunately, his proposal for a new set of trees is mistaken as a wedding proposal, and soon Mr. Russ and Florence are rumored to be engaged. As if that weren't bad enough, Angelo, the new school cafeteria chef - an Italian who makes a mean meatball - has taken up residence in Mr. N's sixth-grade classroom. One of Mr. N's students has moved into the historic old weeping willow tree behind the school. And the boys and girls - as well as men and women - in the community of Geyser Creek have boycotted each other, waging an all-out battle of the sexes that is making co-existence near impossible.

I have been a fan of Kate and M. Sarah Klise since I read their novel TRIAL BY JURY over 4-years-ago, and my affection for their books grows with each new release. REGARDING THE TREES is no exception. Told in alternating voices through faxes, letters, newspaper articles, historical papers, secret notes, and much more, REGARDING THE TREES is sure to entertain readers of all ages. The original, yet oh-so-interesting format is enjoyable, and makes you breeze through the story in record time, while the crazy characters that you encounter on each and every page make you wish that the story would go on forever. And don't forget the illustrations that bring the stars of the story to life. A hilarious book to accompany its equally hilarious predecessors, REGARDING THE SINK and REGARDING THE FOUNTAIN.

5 out of 5 stars Ingenious and hilarious.......2005-08-18

Mr. Russ, the principal of Geyser Creek Middle School, is scheduled for an evaluation, which sets his nerves on edge. Hoping for a positive review so he can keep his job, Mr. Russ decides that the trees scattered across the school grounds desperately need a trimming to look their best. So he calls on Ms. Florence Waters, the multi-talented woman who recently had installed a new fountain for the school. Even though she lives all the way over in California, she feels delighted to help out her old friends again. While they work out the details of the job, a slight misunderstanding leads Ms. Waters to believe that Mr. Russ is proposing marriage, when in fact that's the last thing on his mind!

Meanwhile, the new middle school's Italian chef is causing quite a stir in town as well. He and the town's café owner, Angel Fisch, are bashing heads on who is the better cook. Their feud soon spreads to include the entire town, dividing the population down the gender line, boys versus girls. Ms. Fisch suggests the obvious solution of a cooking contest, and everyone agrees --- but then someone steals the favorite recipe from both! Who is the culprit?

Meanwhile, some of the students are very upset with Mr. Russ deciding not only to prune the giant willow on the school grounds, but also to remove it entirely. Minnie O. starts up a protest to save all the trees. During her campaign, she learns about an old Geyser Creek club who called themselves The Maids of May, dedicated to saving and planting trees all over the world. Through The Maids of May meeting minutes, Minnie O. discovers some very interesting facts about Geyser Creek and her inhabitants.

REGARDING THE TREES is an ingenious story filled with hilarious puns and misunderstandings. The entire book is a collection of newspaper articles, letters, phone messages, faxes, meeting minutes, and a video transcript. Also sprinkled in are tiny Italian lessons and helpful hints on how to plant trees, and how to explore and construct a family tree. The author and illustrator, Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise, have done an awesome job with this unusual series, and fans can look forward to REGARDING THE BATHROOMS: A Privy to the Past.

    Book Description

    YOUR DISGUSTING HEAD

For many years the scientific and educational community has wondered and worried about the possibility that semi-sane scholar-pretenders would find the means to put out a series of reference books, filled with ludicrous misinformation and aimed at children.

Well, we offer you YOUR DISGUSTING HEAD by Dr. and Mr. Doris Haggis-On-Whey. A world-renowned and much feared expert on everything, Dr. Doris Haggis-On-Whey has seventeen degrees from eighteen institutions of higher learning. With her husband, Benny, she has traveled the world many times over, has learned about all aspects of life, including outer space and food, first hand.

The human body is beautiful and mysterious. The mysterious part reeks of cheese. But no part of your body is as scary and horrifying as your head! In YOUR DISGUSTING HEAD: The Darkest, Most Offensive--and Moist--Secrets of Your Mouth, Nose and Ears, Dr. & Mr. Doris Haggis-on-Whey reveal -- through newly discovered discoveries -- all the ways in which your head disappoints you.

    With such amazing information as:

    • The ear was invented and designed by Feranando de la Mancini Goldfarb, in 1911, which was also a good year for yeast.

    • Good Reasons for teeth removal: dentist did it; peer pressure; not sharp enough; found better teeth, like, on the ground; suspected of enjoying flossing; decay and mouth politics.

    • The real reason your ears can't hear your pets talking. The answer is simple: your pet is a mumbler."

With the wit and irreverent sense of humor for which Dave Eggers and McSweeney's is known, comes the second volume in the revolutionary Haggis-On-Whey World of Unbelievable Brilliance books. More than just entertaining and informative, YOUR DISGUSTING HEAD will help you appear smarter, more in touch with your sensitive side and whiten your teeth. And much, much more that will likely sicken you.

5 out of 5 stars Brings out the "silly" in all of us!.......2007-06-29

I teach high school, and have shelves of books in my room of all reading levels. The Hagis-on-Whey books are almost never there! I catch students reading them all the time...out loud to their friends, in the hallway during breaks, and in class (ahem!) when they're supposed to be listening to me! It doesn't seem to matter what a kid's reading level is; they all get a kick out of these books. I've even had other staff members borrow them!

These books never fail to spark curiosity and elicit giggles! I wish there were more in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Secrets Of The Uvula!.......2005-11-06

This is an utterly brilliant book that is suitable for all ages, but will make anyone interested in the horrible and offensive secrets of your ears, nose, and mouth laugh out loud with repulsion. This is Volume 2, No. 241 of 307 in the "Haggis-On-Whey World of Unbelievable Brilliance" series of educational books written by Dr. and Mr. Doris Haggis-On-Whey.

The book contains a great deal of interesting information about heads that I had not been previously aware of, as well as a lot of useful, day-to-day tips. Examples include a chart explaining "Shapes of brain, including the possum, and colors of earwax," "The roof or your mouth through history" (although it only dates to 5800 BC, when the mouth changed from its prehistoric periwinkle color to the pink-red-brown hue we are now used to), "Political affiliations within the body" (it's no surprise that elbows are Republicans, while tonsils are staunchly Democratic), and a list of the four Presidents who didn't have ears (Taft, Cleveland, McKinley, and Coolidge, of course.)

This is a hysterically funny and lushly bound volume, which is extremely entertaining, mildly educational, somewhat thought-provoking, and should be one everyone's bookshelf. I also recommend Volume 1, No. 120 of 307 "Giraffes? Giraffes!" which will fill your head full of non sequitur mammology in the same way as this volume explains cranium functionality. This is a truly brilliant book.

5 out of 5 stars this book is so good I don't know what to do with myself.......2005-03-23

There are a couple of misleading numbers in the description of this book, where it says that it's for ages 9-12 and that it's 64 pages long. Sure, it's for ages 9-12, and for ages 19, 29, 39.... the humor is a substantial notch more clever than "The Secret Knowledge of Grownups" (which my kid loves, so no criticism implied; he gets 100% of the humor in that book, whereas a certain percentage of this book would be over his head, or at least he wouldn't completely understand why I'm laughing so hard). Also, the 64 pages add up to more than 64 pages of a regular kids' book would be; as in Jon Stewart's "America," there's a lot crammed into a regular page. (Of course there are a few pages that aren't too complex.) This book is pretty similar to "America," actually.

This book is marvelously multilayered; kids will love it because it's silly and adults will love it because the absurdities are just so much fun and so artfully done.

i had no idea that my head was so disgusting. after reading this book, i've decided that i'm only keeping my head around until i find a suitable cover for the top of my neck, something not unlike a chimney topper that makes it nearly impossible for squirrels to crawl down and die (the chimney, not my neck).

ten pages into this book, i bought a few as presents. you're welcome, present-recipients. highly recommended and quite enlightening. you'll like.

I am wrapping gifts for my grandchildren. I purchased this book and Giraffes, Giraffes for two sets of them. I laughed out loud at the clever and so very funny text. I don't want to part with them but will make sure I check them out every time I visit with the grandkids.

My opinion, as the mother, purchaser of this book, and reader, of this book is average. I prefer the BackYardigans cartoon on television instead of the books. However, my daughter who began to have these books read to her, absolutely enjoys them, thinking they are the best. The absolute best is when this BackYardigans episode is on during the Christmas season, and she pulls out the book to turn the pages as the cartoon exactly portrays each page, following along. She did this at 34 months of age and will continue to do so because I have it on DVD now as well.

Peter Tompkins, author of the New York Times number one bestseller The Secret Life of Plants, parallels the scientist's world of quarks and muons with the spiritualist's world of fairies and sprites in The Secret Life of Nature. There's more to nature than green leaves and twittering birds: it's a world that only the gifted and dedicated observer can see, using techniques of the mind that transcend the limits of the five senses, much as the scientist peers into the subatomic world with supercolliders and electron microscopes. Going beyond the boundaries of typical pro-environmental propaganda, The Secret Life of Nature is more than a plea to save the planet; it will change the way you see the world.

    1 out of 5 stars Only scam.......2005-10-15

This book is written on second hand, unreliable info, just the kind of "I heard that...".
Peter Tompkins is the kind of writer who likes to compile things from other sources. But this time the content is poor, low quality, just sounds as fake as possible, he could really have done better.
If you are interested in Fairies, no doubt you will be able to find better reading elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Doctors Thesis Research Material.......2000-12-06

This is a most excellent book, covering material not generally available to the spiritually curious. I have been completeing a Doctors Thesis with The University of Metaphysics and find this to be one of the books I used most extensively in the thesis. Interestingly enough this gives a more complete story of the movie FAIRY TALE A TRUE STORY. A movie which portrays Sir Arthur Conan Doyles discovery and publishing of the famous Cottingsley fairy pictures As a spiritual hypnotherapist (C.M.Ht//Certified Master Hypnotherapist) I am able to validate some of this material from my research sessions. I wish you would make a better effort to supply this book, which is on my list of 10 most recommended books to students and clients.

4 out of 5 stars Tompkins' most bizarre volume yet.......2000-02-20

A bizarre, somewhat disjointed read not for the scientific faint-of-heart, but for those familiar with Tompkins' strange excursions and capable of suspending scientific disbelief, another intriguing, startling exposition; includes discussion of Theosophists, Rudolf Steiner, astral planes, occult chemistry, fairies, woodland spirits, and the like. Tompkins is one of those far-out writers who, inexplicably, I consistently get a kick out of reading (and constantly wonder if he himself believes everything he writes about?). Personally I give this wild, rambling read a very high "4" for enjoyability, but it is the sort of volume other folks will either love (if they are inclined toward the metaphysical and esoteric) or...hate.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book on Nature Spirits and Other Esoterica.......1999-09-23

This book is a tour de force work on nature spirits (fairies, gnomes, angels, etc.). Peter Tompkins uncovers the history, past mystical organizations (as well as current ones), mystics, scientists and others and then factually pieces together the existence of this hidden worldaround us. This book is out of print (although you can purchase it through Amazon.com of the UK)as I suspect this book was deliberately taken off the market in the U.S. because of the controversial subject matter and discussion of halucigenetic drugs (and growth of the Santo Daime community).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to Secret Life of Plants.......1999-02-05

The subject matter is both interesting and educational. I approached it following the release in Britain of the film "Fairytale - A True story." Tompkins covers this specific extremely well and goes on to look at it in a wider context. There is a clear sense in the book that there are points when he is making discoveries about himself as he goes deeper into subjects. In particular he gives the impression that he experiences things rather than merely putting forward abstract theories.

At one point he states that there were things which the publishers of "plants" excluded twenty years ago but which he goes into now.

An excellent thought provoking book which challenges the way in which much of what we take as accepted in day to day life is offered.

    Book Description

Caw of the Wild is an in-depth exploration into the intriguing and complex behavior of one of North America's most intelligent, but often reviled, birds—the American crow.

As a passionate observer, author Barb Kirpluk shares her extraordinary and fascinating findings while tracking three urban crow families through their daily existence. By befriending the birds and gaining their trust, Kirpluk shares many observations on subjects such as:

  • The language of crows
  • Crow habits and social relationships
  • The endearing personal relationships that evolved and allowed her to learn from the birds

Kirpluk brings to life the unforgettable characters of these birds by combining anecdotal tales and recent scientific literature. Her quest eventually leads her to the world of wildlife rehabilitation where, for a year, she studies and catalogues a group of captive crows.

Caw of the Wild is an honest and heartfelt portrayal of a misunderstood bird, and may just encourage you to take a new look at the American crow.

5 out of 5 stars A personal touch which brings the crow family to life........2007-01-07

It's unusual to find two specific bird books on the same species in the same publishing season, but CAW OF THE WILD: OBSERVATIONS FROM THE SECRET WORLD OF CROWS arrived nearly simultaneously to CROWS and provides an intriguing contrast in style and approach. Barb Kirpluk is a passionate observer of crows and here shares her findings while tracking three urban crow families through their daily routines. She's befriended them, gained their trust, and thus provides a more personal observational style on crow habits and social relationships, including a healthy dose of scientific literature but adding a personal touch which brings the crow family to life.

    5 out of 5 stars Glad I Got It.......2006-09-23

I had this book pop up quite awhile on Amazon, probably based on prior crow searches I'd done, but it took me awhile to order it. Once I did, two things got me right away. The first was the author's dedication to her grandmother, and the memory of her beloved canaries, for didn't my own granmother gently hold her canaries (each suceeding bird always named Dickie bird) in her hand as she trimmed their nails? Then, the first line of the introduction grabbed my attention: "I loved crows even before I knew I did." Me too! And though my love for them didn't take me as deeply into their lives as Barb went, their presence on the periphery of mine was certainly profound, as they lived around me in my busy suburban life, and quite confidently swaggered their way into my writing, ending up as pivotal characters in my fantasy series. It's just like them, they're there and they let you know it, one way or the other!
Caw of the Wild to me stands as a very unique book among those I have read on corvids, because Barb is not a trained biologist, but thinks like one whose heart is still connected to her brain. I guess that's what I mean about this being a very unique book. I love the feeling I got reading it and knowing there's a kindred spirit out there too, who can see the wonderous individuality in each bird. Really, she gives each reader a gift in sharing this incredible experience, that is more than worth the price of admission. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A poignant and fascinating personal study of crow behavior.......2006-01-09

With a beautiful and engaging style, the author tells of her personal experiences with 4 families of crows from her neighborhood. The details she gives are so thorough and heartwarming, you will come to know her crow friends as if you were actually there with her, experiencing what she did. You'll be drawn in and captivated as the human relationship with them evolves and strenghthens. You'll also learn much about crow behavior, and when you're not sure why the crows are behaving a certain way, the intuitive author offers her theories, which are quite plausible.

The second part of the book tells of her experiences while volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation center, as she studies the behavior of the 2 indoor and 3 outdoor crows which reside there. Because they are confined to a cage, individual personalities as well as the relationships between the 3 outdoor crows can be intimately viewed.

If you are at all interested in befriending crows, or are just curious what they are like, I can't imagine a better book to read. Crows are so intelligent; I especially loved the emotional bond that developed between crow and human. This is one of the best books I have ever read!

5 out of 5 stars For birdwatchers and nature lovers.......2005-11-13

Vivid prose packed with informative engaging stories of crows the author has studied over the course of several years. This study of crows is both personal and rich in extraordinary anecdotes. The author's patience at befriending the crows pays off in up close insights about their lives that puts in practice what ornithologists have discovered and written about in scholarly type books and journals. This is a very entertaining journey through a very compelling subject. If you love birds, and were ever the least bit interested in crows you won't be disappointed.

And what can they tell us about earlier people on the land and the first settlers? As Adam and his grandfather work together to repair the family farm's old stone walls, Adam learns how fascinating geology can be, and how the everyday landscape provides intriguing clues to the past.
