Book Description
Nearly twice as many women as men suffer from depression or anxiety, interfering with their ability to work and care for themselves and their loved ones. Now, Deborah Sichel and Jeanne Watson Driscoll show how depression and anxiety are the result of a process of long–term chemical "loading" as the brain repeatedly "revs up" in response to stress. Here, they share their unique self–care program, NURSE: Nourishment and Needs, Understanding, Rest and Relaxation, Spirituality, and Exercise, to help the brain self–stabilise and prevent future problems. They also advocate early, customised use of medications, uniquely based on how a woman's genetic make up, life experiences, and hormonal and reproductive history affect her particular mood disruptions. An intimate look at how women's mood issues change at each stage of their reproductive lives, this book offers help to women who have been suffering in silence for too long.

Customer Reviews:
Great book to sort through hormonal and depression issues.......2007-08-18
This is a great book. I got it at the library and liked it so much that I ordered it from Amazon. It explains hormonal fluctuations and how they tie into depression and mood disorders.
Well thought out book!.......2007-06-07
Reading the book makes me wonder how these women would diagnose me compared to my current psychiatrist. Awesome book. I have a hard time putting it down. I love the many real life examples that are written in there. They make think back on my own life. I always had a feeling a big part of me being bipolar II is do to the craziness of being on and off of birth control throughout my life. You would think hopefully ob/gyn would make it a requirement for women to see a psychiatrist before getting on any birth control to make sure the birth control won't have any adverse affects on them like it did me. I wish I would've known I was bipolar before I screwed myself over with birth control. I would not have taken any birth control at all in my life.
It is sad seeing my Aunt who is of the generation of keeping silent. I recommended this book to her. I for one am gratefully my generation is now more open to many changes of female hormones, emotions, and the brain. I hope that one day my Aunt will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and realize what she is going through other women experience as well.
I understand where some of the comments are coming from about the drug issue, in this day in age there is a little bigger and better selection of drugs available. When it comes to taking them as needed to try do as prescribed by psychiatrists. My aunt went into relapses each time she came off of it. I love the suggest that is made about changing the amount of drugs taken according to what time of month it is with menstrual cycles.
Also authors did a great job explaining the brain and how hormones affect it and how delicate the mind is. It helped me realize in tears how much I have taken my mind for granted and not pay to much attention to give it rest from everyday stresses, which explains why the brain has self destruct thoughts because of so much over load past years and damage to the chemicals in the mind to help keep stable.
Before I read this book I was in desperate needs to better understand my diagnoses of bipolar II that received a couple months back, this book was the answer to my prayers, now I better understand the importance of medications for those that are truly in need help from chemical imbalances my brain. Before I had thoughts that I didn't want to go through with what my friend went through with bouncing around through psychiatrist finding the right diagnose and become a lab rat with finding the right medications. Now I know the importance of having a psychiatrist that will diagnose me as a whole.
Currently I'm not on any medications right now, since I just been diagnosed by a therapist two months back. I want to learn more about my situation and thanks to this book need of searching for the most part stops with this book.
I can't thank the authors enough for all there time and effort in putting the book together for us women
: )
changed my view about depression.......2007-02-07
This is my first online review of a book on Amazon's website.
This book was tremendously helpful. Even though I have dealt with depression and worked hard to overcome it, in the back of my mind, I blamed myself for this problem and felt that I was "not strong enough." Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten it in the first place. Right?
Well, no. Women's Moods changed my perspective. It showed me that depression is a physiological condition that is sometimes triggered and exacerbated by life events. I felt such relief after reading this book.
I am surprised at the negative reviews. One person complains that it is not scientific enough; another, that there is too much exposition about biochemistry. Another; that the book is a sales pitch for SSRI's.
I though the book had the right balance of case histories, explanation about biochemistry, and information on treating depression. Yes, meds are sometimes suggested in the case histories, but certainly not all of the meds are SSRI's.
I thank the authors for writing such an insightful book.
A BOOK EVERY WOMAN SHOULD READ.......2005-09-01
This is a beautiful book that every woman should read. It deals with women's moods from the onset of menstruation to menopause. PMS, PMDD, PPD and Menopause. The NURSE program designed to help women heal from PPD is one I specifically recommend to the mothers in the Postpartum Support Group. This book should be on every woman's shelf, no matter what her age.
Drug Agenda Here.......2005-05-15
What a sad book! Read the book and you'll notice how she
preaches depression as the main theme of being a female. Her
answer wouldn't ya know is a psychiatrict drug,Prozaic.Bad idea!
I've known many people who have been dupped into taking this
drug, both men and women, the results were heightened bipolar
disorder,paranoia and more depression.It's a sales pitch
for drugs.
She wants women to be drug dependent, out of controll of their
lives, helpless. The book does not empower women,it is a depressing book, written to horrify women and get them obsessing
about their every thought and mood.
The premise is,all women are more or less the same, she couldn't
be further from the truth
Be a weary consumer, both in advice and drugs.

"The magic key to health, happiness, and romance is waiting for you in your local health food store," says relationship guru John Gray, Ph.D. Not only do men and women have different communication and love styles, they gain and lose weight differently and need different diets, asserts Gray, author of the bestselling Mars and Venus series. Though he does not have credentials in exercise, nutrition, or weight management, Gray creates a program that, he claims, balances each gender's brain chemistry, resulting in health, weight loss, stress management, and romance. Gray analyzes the specific brain chemicals, hormones, and reactions to stress that affect men and women differently and influence relationships. He recommends an eating plan involving at least three meals a day; replacing breakfast with a low-calorie, nutritious breakfast shake; taking amino acid supplements; drinking "cleansing nutrients"; and avoiding junk food. The exercise prescription is only seven pages long (out of 314), consisting of his "bounce, shake, breathe, and flex" program. This may stimulate brain chemicals, but it doesn't do much for cardiovascular or muscle conditioning. Gray seems more concerned with avoiding getting too much exercise than getting enough or the right kind (according to exercise professionals). --Joan Price

M & V Diet and Excercise Solution.......2007-03-19
VERY educational and scientifically based! We really benefitted from these CD's...
Effective Diet Solution.......2006-11-10
Offered a lot of good information about living a healthy lifestyle, mostly about buying products though. If you don't have a good amount of money, don't expect to stay on this diet.
John Gray and Isagenix = Perfect Combination.......2006-09-04
John Gray, for any who have had the pleasure of seeing him in person, is an absolutely amazing speaker. He is a genuine person who cares about people. He's funny, he's highly intelligent, and he really understands the fundamental differences between men and women. We are truly different creatures.
He created the Mars and Venus Wellness Solution as an all natural alternative to prescription medications for depression, bipolar, ADD, ADHD and similar issues. John teamed with Isagenix, an international Health and Wellness company that I also represent, because he found that his personal experience with Isagenix products was that they helped to "create the brain chemistry of health, happiness, and lasting romance" - the very foundation of his work with men and women and relationships. John worked with our formulator to create a new line - the Mars Venus Wellness Solution, "the first and only program ever created that's designed to support healthy brain chemistry while considering the unique and special needs that make men and women different."
These products are fabulous. This is what the book is about. This is not an attempt to market on the weight loss craze - it is a natural progression in John's work to help men and women become healthy physically and emotionally.
John Gray is phoney.......2006-04-13
Don't buy this book, please! The man is a complete fake. He's degrees are totally worthless. He is making money off of people looking for help and tricked into believing his marketing hype. Just do some research on Google and you'll discover the truth about him.
Is it an info-mercial or a book? .......2006-02-20
This book is horrible! It is uninsightful and utterly pointless. The first 200 pages build an advertisement riddled case for healthy diet and exercise that leaves you less than conviced that John Gray has any idea what he is writing about. Maybe there is a reason the U.S. has outlawed some of the treatments that are espoused with giving Mr. Gray his "insight" into what our bodies need? The scientific data was never openly stated, but shrouded in mysterious, sensational statements such as "the same diet plan may cause a woman to gain weight and a man to lose weight." This book left me wondering if John Gray actually believes this stuff or whether he is just trying to fulfill a book contract with his publisher.
I hope that this review does not dissuade you from ever purchasing a book by John Gray. If you have never read "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" then I highly recommend that you purchase it and refer to it often. It is a truly amazing and well written insight into the minds of men and women. Check it out and leave this diet book on the shelf for someone else.

Book Description
Peripheral hormones have a major impact on the brain: they are able to interfere with its development, to affect release of neurotransmitters and concentrations of receptors, to trigger growth factors involved in lesion repair. These multiple actions account for their capacity to modulate a number of physiological parameters, from reproductive functions to memory, behaviour and aging. This book based on contributions of pioneer investigators in the field, outlines the role of hormones in pathogenic processes such as mental disturbances or neurodegenerative diseases.

Book Description
In addition to filling a need within the field of parental behavior, this book contributes importantly to the growing area of emotional and motivational neuroscience. A major part of neuroscience research at the whole organism level has been focused on cognitive neuroscience, with an emphasis on the neurobiology of learning and memory, but there has been a recent upsurge in research which is attempting to define the neural basis of basic motivational and emotional systems which regulate such behaviors as food intake, aggression, reproduction, reward-seeking behaviors, and anxiety-related behaviors. In this book the emphasis is on the research findings obtained from rodents, sheep and primates. The authors' goal, of course, was to provide a foundation that may help us understand the neurobiology of human parental behavior. Indeed, the last chapter attempts to integrate the non-human research data with some human data in order to make some inroads toward an understanding of postpartum depression, child abuse, and child neglect. Clearly, motivational and emotional neuroscience has close ties to psychiatry, and this connection will be very evident in the final chapter. By understanding the neurobiology of parental behavior we are also delving into neurobiological factors which may have an impact on core human characteristics involved in sociality, social attachment, nurturing behavior, and love. In this very violent world, it is hard to conceive of a group of characteristics that are more worthy of study.

Book Description
The rapid evergrowing knowledge in the field of neuro-humoral regulation of cardiovascular pathophysiology is changing the picture of current diagnosis and treatment of cardiac patients. The emerging conceptual revolutionary idea is that heart acts not as a pump, merely, but as a "gland", that is as a regulator of circulatory homeostasis and salt-water balance.
Cardiovascular pathophysiology has to be written, indeed, on this basis: no physiology textbook is up-to-date in describing the complexity and novelty of actual knowledge. The platea of either physiologists or clinicians involved in the study of the cardiovascular system and care of heart patients will accept with favour such an approach, combining the classical heamodynamic view with the new neuro-hormonal paradigma.

Book Description
The neurological consequences of alcohol abuse need additional research concentrating on prevention and treatment. Public attention and research efforts are being driven by an ever- increasing understanding of the problems and magnitude of alcohol on neurological development. The 10 million alcohol-abusing adults, along with unborn children exposed to alcohol in utero, cost the people of the U.S. more than $100 billion in lost wages, health care, theft, damaged mental functions, and shortened life span. An intimate, detailed knowledge of the effects of alcohol on the biochemical reactions and neurological changes is critical in preventing or treating abuse. We must study the mechanisms of ethanol's effects on the neurological system at a cellular and systematic level to understand its action. These include modifications of hormonal regulation and production with its major functional consequences. Brain development including its cells are a major focus and emphasis of this volume. The progress of research over the past decade is encouraging as we begin to summarize and evaluate in detail advances in understanding changes in the brain's biochemistry and physiology caused by ethanol. This information will assist the researcher, clinician, and student in comprehending the complex changes caused by direct and indirect effects of single drugs at the cellular level.

Book Description
The use of Epo in medical practice is increasing constantly. It has revolutionized how we think of blood transfusion in medicine and surgery. Moreover, it has become widely known to scientists, physicians, biotech and pharmaceutical executives and the general public. Additionally, the past ten years have seen important advances in our knowledge and understanding of its action both within and outside of the hematopoietic system.
Until now, there has been no single source that contains up-to-date information on Epo addressing the array of subjects that this book presents.
The book covers all aspects from developmental biology to specific topics such as medical applications of recombinant Epo, receptor biology, mechanisms of Epo activity, structure/activity relationship, disease states and important actions on non-hematopoietic organs and tissues, including the central nervous system, heart, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive organs and endothelium.

Book Description
Advances in Brain Vasopressin elucidates the functions of the regulatory peptide vasopressin in the nervous system, and reviews the current status of this field at different levels.
It deals with the cell biology and anatomy of the neurons that produce vasopressin in the brain, and provides an overview on the receptors of vasopressin and the signal transduction pathways that they activate, including the cellular responses that are triggered by vasopressin. Reviews are presented on the modulation of behavior induced by vasopressin in a number of different contexts, such as sex-linked and steroid-dependent behaviors, social behaviors, and learning and memory.
Furthermore, the volume deals with several controversial issues in the field by presenting overlapping chapters from different research groups in order to provide the reader with current views.
Highly relevant and useful, for those working on this "first" neuropeptide, and for young investigators entering the field, and in addition, shows how important a multidisciplinary approach is to unravelling the function of a neuropeptide in the brain.
