Book Description

Now fully updated and revised, the new Fourth Edition of Cell and Molecular Biology not only offers you and your students all of the latest research, it also gives students the tools they need to understand the science behind cell biology and ultimately succeed in your course. This text is ideal for sophomore/junior-level courses in cell biology offered out of biology or molecular and cell biology departments.
Cell and Molecular Biology provides an alternative for faculty looking for a text that concentrates on core concepts without sacrificing coverage of experimental evidence. Karp explores core concepts in considerable depth, and presents experimental detail when it helps to explain and reinforce the concept being explained. This edition also continues to offer an exceedingly clear presentation and excellent art program, both of which have received high praise in prior editions.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory book.......2007-07-19

I've come to appreciate this book more and more over its succeeding editions. It has now replaced both the Alberts et al. and the Lodish et al. books (both nevertheless excellent) as my favorite textbook on cell and molecular biology.

It is concise, covers a very large range of subjects and has very clear graphics. I think it is better balanced than many of its competitors in the sense that the reader never gets the impression that the author sacrificed certain subjects to give more room to his favorite ones. On many occasions, I was surprised to find things in here that I couldn't find in the bigger (and more "fundamental") Alberts and Lodish.

It references papers and review articles that are very current, and is very up to date on its content.

I think Gerald Karp is doing a very good job with each new iteration of this book and I will recommend it to my students.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!.......2006-01-09

This is one of the most complete and easy-to-read book ever! I have studied with Gerald Karp books since I was an undergraduate student (Biochemistry, and Karp book was always by my side, very useful). This book explain the cellular metabolism, structures (cytoskeleton, microtubules, filaments, genes, relations between genes and proteins, DNA repair, cell cycle, cell signalling, lot of concepts that are not easy to understand at first, Karp does it very simple. You will love this book. I can strongly recommend it. Another excellent book I can recommend is Molecular Biology of the CELL by Bruce Alberts....is excellent! and before you take an exam, I will suggest the "Outline of Molecular and Cell Biology" by the Schaum's series. Well, that's it for now, I wish you the best in your career (I have been there, I know how hard it can be and choose the proper books!) and always remember, keep working and practicing, because practice make the Master!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Great job.......2005-09-26

The book was in great condition. Seller let me know that the book was in the mail which was nice.

3 out of 5 stars Concise story of cell biology.......2002-01-04

Another introductory book in the biology of the cell. I would say that the book is divided into mainly two sections, Cell structure and DANA, DANA replications etc. Second part takes almost two thirds of the book. I would prefer to read other Gene books when it comes to that point but for the cell structure, it is not bad. Some colored pictures, computer animations makes it easy to visualize things. Sections called "experimental pathways" scattered throughout the text takes you into current issues related to the subject. They are also quite sophisticated issues rather than practical problems. I think this book requires considerable guidance when read alone. I could not call this book as self sufficient or easy to read one compared to books by Alberts or Baltimore.

5 out of 5 stars He's got it all here in a nutshell.......2000-12-07

All biology, biochemistry, and premed students will find this text an indispensible source of information for anything there is to know about cells. This is one text that can't possibly be read and fully understood overnight; just take a little bit at a time at any convenient moment and it will all come together in your mind before you know it!

    Book Description

Ecological theories and hypotheses are usually complex because of natural variability in space and time, which often makes the design of experiments difficult. This book describes how to design ecological experiments from a statistical basis using analysis of variance, so reliable conclusions can be drawn. The logical procedures that lead to a need for experiments are described, followed by an introduction to simple statistical tests. This leads to a detailed account of analysis of variance, looking at procedures, assumptions, and problems. One-factor analysis is extended to nested (hierarchical) designs and factorial analysis. Finally, some regression methods for examining relationships between variables are covered. Examples of ecological experiments are used throughout to illustrate the procedures and examine problems. This book will be invaluable to practicing ecologists as well as advanced students involved in experimental design.

    4 out of 5 stars underwood.......2007-06-09

Good guide for the whole scientific community...citated in all the original articles of the last years...without it you can't pubblish anymore on the most popular and important scientific ecological journals.
Very good and written in an easy form.

5 out of 5 stars Conceptual and logical in approach.......2007-02-20

The book is focus on the author's field, it is ecology and on benthic invertebrates. This book is great for people who wants to study community ecology as prof Underwood tries to explain the principles of statistics, how to design your study against pitfalls before conducting it in the field. The numerous examples set to analyze their variances, how to analyze samples and the assumptions made in analyzing samples. All of these are covered by a field practicing ecologist whose book is destined to be a classic in ecology and statistics.

5 out of 5 stars essential book for ecologists.......2000-08-27

This book was one of the best purchases I made upon starting my graduate career. It is extremely well written and de-mystifies the process of hypothesis testing and experimental design and analysis. I consider this book a must for anyone starting out in the field of ecology who has questions about experimental design or analysis.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book with a clear leanguage........2000-07-14

Anyone has experience the fear of start reading any statistical book because most of the classic text always confuse us with very sophisticated formulas and terms. Underwood book for me is written in a extreme clear leanguage and examples. I teach this kind of courses and my students find easy to use even if is a foreign leanguage to us. I hope this would help you. Regards, Rafael.

5 out of 5 stars good to read, great to review.......2000-04-06

This is really an excellent book. Concepts are presented in a straightforward and intuitive way. This is great for getting concepts the first time and also works really well as a review/reference text. Anyone who has felt frustrated while using Biometry (Sokal and Rohlf) to learn an unfamiliar statistical concept related to ANOVA should consider this book. It is a good complementary text to that one.

You will not be disappointed with this book! Janice VanCleave's Biology For Every Kid is divided into these categories: plants, zoology, and the human body with tons of simple hands-on experiments that you can do for each. I use these experiments all the time in my 7th grade classroom and the kids love them. Learning is so much better when it's hands-on! I would highly recommend this book for upper elementary and middle school science teachers.

4 out of 5 stars A little interest boost for elementary school biology.......1999-04-10

I reviewed this book in The Home School Manual ================

Projects and activities to teach concepts, terminology, and (according to the author, Janice VanCleave) laboratory methods. This book and the others in the series each describe 101 experiments. For biology they are classified under plants, animals, and humans. Each is presented in a two-page spread with an illustration on the right. The order is logical. By working through the book doing some experiments and reading about the others, one would form significant concepts. An explanation is given for each activity. Growing carrots from carrot tops demonstrates that a plant can grow if it has portions of base, stem, and root, and if it receives food and water.

The explanations are oversimplified in some cases (for "finger monocle" for example). Younger students need simpler explanations, but I believe the scientific principles could be stated more accurately. Also, some of the illustrations could be improved, but basically the book is good.

For a total science program I would recommend a textbook or a number of broad topic books. Individual experiments miss some of the overall themes and some concepts are hard to demonstrate.

I have not seen evolutionary concepts in the book. It and others in the series seem best for about grades 3 through 5. Younger kids could profit from most of the activities. The explanations don't bring out the scientific principles clearly enough for older ones.

Part of a series from John Wiley & Sons.

    Book Description

This highly effective and practical manual is designed to be used as a supplementary text for the organic chemistry laboratory course - and with virtually any main text - in which experiments are supplied by the instructor or in which the students work independently. Each technique contains a brief theoretical discussion. Steps used in each technique, along with common problems that might arise. These respected and renowned authors include supplemental or related procedures, suggested experiments, and suggested readings for many of the techniques. Additionally, each chapter ends with a set of study problems that primarily stress the practical aspects of each technique, and microscale techniques are included throughout the text, as appropriate. Additional exercises, reference material, and quizzes are available online.

3 out of 5 stars Good student text.......2000-06-28

The authors give a nice presentation of theory involved in recrystallization, distillation, chromatography, and extraction. The writing style is academic, but friendly enough to keep you interested. I found it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chem lab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriously doubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for a refresher course in the basic techniques. The labs I took had a significant amount of NMR involved; not much discussion in this text about that. The problems provided are usually good, but there are no answers given. I'd also recommend "Principles and Techniques in an Integrated Chem Laboratory" by Aikens, Bailey, et al.

5 out of 5 stars Badly Needed Advice to the Young Experimentor.......2007-01-03

Students are taught to do expeiments in college, but these are carefully planned with the procedure and the results well tested. As the students move towards a graduate degree, they are expected to begin to do research of an original nature where neither the procedure nor the results are known in advance. This is a big step, and in general there has been little practical advice on how the student should proceed, just what is expected of him, how he is to work with his major professor, even how to know when he has found something.

This book, according to the author, is the result of a dinner with some fellow scientists where the wine flowed freely. They were lamenting about the differences in what students were being taught and the way that science was actually practiced.

The book lays out what happens to a real project. It begins with the first step of defining the problem to be studied, conducting research on what's been done on that problem, defining the experiments, controls, experimenting, confirming, peer review, using the results for predictions, and finally continuing the developmental effort into the future.

This is not a large book, but it provides a wealth of knowledge of the real world that the academic is preparing to enter. It is written in a light and entertaining style that doesn't hide the fact that the author has 'been there, done that.'

    Highly Recommended!

Recent media headlines about research misconduct in American Universities have focused public attention on the dramatic ethical problems that can arise during the conductof research. In the current atmosphere of accountability, scientific research on humans is now under increased scrutiny by the media, Congress and the public. Ethics of the Use of Human Subjects in Research fills the need for learning materials and strategies providing support for training programs related to the ethics of the use of human subjects in research. It presents a practical introduction to the ethical issues at stake in the conduct of research with human subjects. Beginning with a chapter on research ethics, a total of 10 chapters range in scope from the deveolopment of a protocol for ethical decision making to how to obtain IRB approval, with an emphasis on ethical factors underpinning the IRB process.

    3 out of 5 stars Critical Analysis.......2005-04-15

I believe that the subjects of this book were very well researched. The author's definitely seem to know what they are talking about. As a reader, I think that the evidence used was very strong and convincing although I think that certain parts needed more evidence. This book has not really altered my ideas of using human subjects in research, but I did add to my understanding of what is involved when it comes to research and human beings. Most of the book increased my knowledge of the subject and made me ask new questions, but there are certain parts that I feel covered things that most readers would already know. These parts of the book was frustrating to read. All in all, I really liked the book and I would have to recommend this book to others if they have an interest in this topic.

      Book Description

"The best feature of this lab manual is its style and organization. It is not just readable, it is thorough.... It is comparable to the best lab manuals I have used or read."

      —William Coleman, University of Hartford

"It is a friendly-to-student book and I think student users will appreciate it--even if they don't realize why. I think they will like microbiology just a bit more."

—Loyd J. Hays, University of Texas at San Antonio

      Clear, concise, and always engaging!

Written specifically for allied health students, Pollack, Findlay, Mondschein, and Modesto’s Laboratory Exercises in Microbiology, 2/e focuses on what students need to succeed in the lab: clear, concise, and highly engaging exercises and activities, rather than content that is simply adapted from a standard microbiology textbook.

Throughout the manual, a variety of interactive activities and experiments convey the basic concepts of microbiology––all in a student-friendly tone. Students also have the opportunity to explore methods that allow the safe movement or transfer of microbial cells from one type of growth environment to another, classification and identification of microbes, microbial biochemistry, as well as laboratory exercises from medical, food, and environmental microbiology.
