5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-04-13

This is a great book, considering how huge it is. Being written in 1998, this book has all the current knowledge. There's more info on the actual era and the technical asspects of dinosaurs than the actual dinosaurs. Despite the price, this book is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Questions about dinosaurs that go deeper than the surface?.......2001-04-15

If so, then this is the book for you! The Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs is a wonderful, up-to-date book that covers most, if not all, topics concerned with dinosaurs. Well put-together, beautifully illustrated, and written by today's top paleontologists, the Encyclopedia is well worth the price. Although it doesn't get too technical, this book is not for the uninformed. A must have for any serious dino-enthusiast - believe me, it will answer your questions, and lead you to ask more! 5 stars may not be enough for this one! (Plus it's massive enough to knock some sense into the not-so-dino-loving loved one or associate in your life!)

5 out of 5 stars This definitely belongs on the shelf of any dino-lover........1999-01-24

When I first received this book for Christmas, I was shocked! The book was the size and weight of a telephone book! It's packed with skeletal drawings, cladograms, paintings... You name it, it's in the text.

4 out of 5 stars Nice work!.......1998-10-11

This is really a good book, with much nice information and artwork (although more art plates may have been a good idea). The numerous articles are written by specialists and that makes the book more up-to-date and interesting than many others. However, articles are very short, so that people will quickly become interested to get more informations. This is possible with references given at the end of each entry.

However, I think this book is a bit too technical for the basal concepts it describes; the style *The Complete Dinosaur* is, I think, more approprite.

5 out of 5 stars My cousins wish it was a toy!.......2007-09-17

This is a great book to teach kids about biology, evolution and nature in general.

Some (if not all) of the fold out creatures are amazing feats of ingenuity ;the mammoth with its long trunk never ceases to capture my cousins attentions (aged 3 and 6). The only problem I have is that they think the book is a toy and they want to touch the animals. I highly recommend these series for all that like to tell stories and teach young kids about the world we live in....and anybody else that like colourful graphics and amazing craftsmanship.

5 out of 5 stars Really great book!.......2007-09-06

I bought my 5 year old all three of the books in this series and he loves them! The pop ups are so complex, yet they stand up every time. There are 5 or 6 pop ups on each page, so the book is chock full of fun for my son.

This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!

Holy cow this is the most amazing pop-up book I've ever seen! I cannot wait until my son is old enough to enjoy this book. It's absolutely filled with fantastic pop-ups PLUS great information to boot.

Just thinking about it makes me smile. :D Definitely buy this book, you'll love it!

Initially I bought this book for my thre children - 7yrs, 5yrs and 2yrs. They made wonderful appreciateve noises when the parcel was opened. I then decided to show it to my Year 3 (8 yr olds). Although they weren't allowed to touch it the class was fascinated. The pop ups were magical and we continued to find more information and more pop ups where ever we looked. Fantastic

Book Description

An unmatched reference work distinguished by its erudition and beauty, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures is an illustrated who's who of prehistoric life, a Baedeker of more than 500 million years of evolution on Earth.

With entries for more than 600 species, each arranged in its evolutionary sequence, the book presents a panorama of enormous diversity, from predatory dinosaurs to primitive amphibians, from giant armored fish to woolly mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and dire wolves. Each entry features a specially commissioned full-color painting prepared according to the best research of today in close collaboration with world-renowned paleontologists. The records of the rocks -- fossil bones, teeth, skin, hair and even footprints and nests -- have been combined with knowledge of the anatomy and behavior of present-day descendants to arrive at informed judgments about posture, color and other aspects of appearance.

Lively and informative "biographies" of the creatures accompany these remarkable illustrations: how they moved, what they ate, where they ranged and the habitats and ecological niches they occupied. Comparisons are made wherever possible with familiar living animals, highlighting both the contrasts and similarities. Also included are articles on subjects such as the time scale of evolution, fossil formation and interpretation and convergent evolution.

Truly a magnificent sourcebook, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures is both a triumph of scholarship and a work of art. It will stand as the best and most accurate presentation of the prehistoric animal world available.

5 out of 5 stars An engrossing and informative volume for laymen or experts.......2005-02-09

This volume is the best one I've found on prehistoric creatures. Having always been fascinated by them, I wanted as an adult to find something to broaden the base I'd built as a kid obsessed with Tyrannosaurus and trilobites. Though I'm far from a paleontologist or even a biologist (my own training is in anthropology and linguistics) I find this book a pleasure to browse and consult.

Beginning with the earliest worm-like organisms and evolving through the early fish, amphibians and armored sea creatures, the book continues on up through dinosaurs, Pleistocene megafauna and finally simians and hominids. The desciptions are brief but seem informative, but it is the quality of the artwork that I value most. I never tire of looking at the colorful depictions of the denizens of Devonian swamps, Ordovician seas and Jurassic forests.

So, while I cannot pretend to be an authority, and though I certainly must defer some credibility and ask that you look at my review in conjunction with those of my fellow critics who disagree, I offer my personal recommendation on this book to any person interested in prehistoric life and what it must have been like.

3 out of 5 stars Engaging at first, but then the flaws ..........2000-07-04

This book looked great at first, but then, on closer inspection, the drawings are second-rate, the information is thin, and the inaccuracies mount. Yet, there are no real alternatives that seek to comprehensively catalogue ancient life. I'd still buy it, but my enthusiasm has waned.

3 out of 5 stars On the second thought..........2000-02-24

Several months after acquiring the book I leaf through it and wonder how I could have given it such a high rating as I did. It has flaws throughout!

- The book appears to have a drastic shortage of species to list - it is only half as thick as Simon and Schuster's Encyclopedia of Animals - despite the fact that on numerous occasions they list but one or two species from a thirty-species family;

- The art is severely degraded from the above mentioned encyclopedia of animals. While I can see the puzzlement concerning the colors of the creatures' hides, there is no excuse for the the sloppy drawings of several of the animals! If you make a conjecture, please, be sure to follow through! On several of the animals the hair cover fails to obey the laws of physics, and most of the amphibians look like a horrid joke.

- The information is sketchy at best - on numerous occasions special biological mechanisms are mentioned (like a new jaw bone arrangement for the fishes, and the skull structures of the early land animals), yet are never explained in function. Almost all species are captioned with the basics like weight and dimensions followed with senseless filler.

- The between-section class summarizations and the cladistic graphs are also very, very basic. While I understand that the book was not intended for specialists, even the basic layman will find the charts a bit "dumbed down".

This book is flashy and artful, but lacking, lacking a great lot.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible work.......1999-12-28

I have always longed for such a book. Probably it's a grave mistake on my part to make that the firt sentense of a review, but still. I daresay, anyone who has ever been in the very least intereste in paleontology has always longed for this sort of tome. The authors have satisfied both our love of visuals ( pictures are abundant - they accompiny every entry, in full blazing color by very trustworthy artists, generally sure to catch anyone's eye) and our love of the unknown ( this is the first non-specialist book that I have seen that goes beyond the everyday banal creatures like the pachycephalosaurus and the pterosaurids). This book is sheer pleasure while doing any sort of research, even for the specialists who need solid information. Perhaps there isn't quite enough data with every entry ( due to page limits), but the information that is included is accurate and up-to-date. This is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating pictures and fascinating text !.......1999-11-10

I have been looked for such a book for a long time, and now I have it. Reading this book is delightful, as it gives you plenty of informations about prehistoric animals in a very attractive manner. You have very nice pictures of all animals, with a short explanation giving all essential data about them (size, anatomic singularities, food habits, ...). In addition, extremely interesting introducing sections give you a vision of each branch of animals, together with explanations on the evolutionary process concerning them.

This very up-to-date pictorial guide to now disappeared animals is a treasure for anybody interested in evolution and diversification of life. It gives you enough matter to become a specialist in this domain ! If you want to have one book on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, make it be this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good for it's time, but others are better.......2005-01-17

I got this book at a garage sale. Original cost was $25 which in 1993 would have made this a good value, although the release of "Jurassic Park" that same year would have exposed you to some dinosaurs for less money.

The reviewer below noticed the lack of illustrations, including my personal favorite, Ankylosaurus. The book contains many of the different types of dinosaurs and the descriptions are well researched for what was known then. In recent years, and even through the "Jurassic Park" movies, we see that new information is being uncovered, making this book ... extinct.

If you find this at a garage sale, and you really want to see all the different types of dinosaurs that some books would just ignore, then get it. There are more varieties than you'd ever known to exist (over 600). The author Donald F. Glut probably has something newer available (for a price) if you want to keep up to date.

At least it is current enough to let you know that the Brontosaurus was incorrectly named and should be called the Apatosaurus. Personally, I learned more about many different species just from playing "Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis" interactive game © 2003 Universal Interactive, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars Cool reference book on every dinosaur discovered so far........1997-05-07

Combined forces of the two famous dinosaur experts Donald F. Glut and Don Lessem, resulted with the detailed listing and description of all dinosaur genera and species known at the time of the publishing (1994). The encyclopedia contains 400 original illustrations of fossils, skeleton reconstructions and life retorations. It is a pitty thourg, that all the dinosaur described in the book were not accompanied with their illustrations. Nevertheless, it is a great reference book and recommended for all ages

My 5 year old son enjoys this book, but I wish it had a better resource for learning about individual dinosaurs. Great pictures and information on the time periods, but he's too young to learn (or not interested) in the time periods, we want more information on each individual dinosaur. Bits of information on each dinosaur is scattered throughout the book, so it's hard to find all the facts of the T-Rex for example.

5 out of 5 stars This book is Awesome.......2007-01-10

We wanted a real educational book about dinosaurs for our son and this was perfect. He will be able to research any kind of dinosaur he can think of. The book is very comprehensive and the picture are wonderful. It is a must have for anyone interested in dinosaurs.

3 out of 5 stars not what I hoped it would be.......2006-11-10

I purchased this book because it had been given 5 stars, but I wish I could have looked inside at the pages beforehand. With 700 entries, one would think this book would have a huge number of accompanying illustrations. But no. For every 7-10 entries, you get a mere one full page picture and sometimes a rather small picture or two. As I read each entry, I had no idea of what most of these dinosaurs even looked like, aside from knowing what general group it belonged to. It left me wishing I had bought a different dinosaur encyclopedia.

5 out of 5 stars Grandson's favorite, and Grandma's too........2006-07-26

My 7 year old grandson is a dinosaur addict. He already owned umpteen dinosaur books, but he kept checking and rechecking this one from the library. Finally he just said he HAD to have this one to keep with him at all times because it was a BASIC NECESSITY. I guess he meant what he said, since he takes it with him on overnights and on all car trips, even short ones. The information in it is thorough, up-to-date and extremely well organized. The pronunciation guide is especially helpful when disputes arise among adults with antiquated dinosaur knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Updated and Informative.......2006-03-29

My 5-year old is all about dinosaurs, for the same reason we have had the chance to read a lot of books about them. This one is definitely my favorite. It is very informative, and the fact that it is updated (compared to another encyclopedias for kids) makes it a nice tool for learning about what we know so far about dinosaurs (and sometimes how we got to those conclusions). The pictures are pretty cool also, we have learned lots of new fun facts about dinosaurs.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for kids.......2006-02-25

My daughter is 12 years old, in 6th grade, and obsessed with dinosaurs. We have been buying books, videos and DVDs on this subject for her since she was four. According to this book's review, it said it was for grades 4 through 8. So I bought it hoping it would have some new (to my daughter) information, of which it had a little, but not too much.

I would, however, recommend this book to a parent if their child is fairly new with their interest in dinosaurs. With that said, my daughter still liked it for the pictures and other info that it offered and, "Hey!", like she said, "It STILL had dinosaurs in it, mom!"

This book is well-written and would make a nice addition to a younger dino-lover's collection of dinosaur books.

The 40-plus chapters in The Complete Dinosaur range from raw, cutting-edge science that drips with original data to surveys of the history of dinosaur collecting that are suitable for even the most jargon-shy readers. Editors James O. Farlow and M. K. Brett-Surman admit that they were "teenage geeks who loved the movies of Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhausen, and Jim Danforth, and the novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Rice Burroughs," and they do not neglect their roots. There are chapters covering all the hot topics of contemporary dinosaur research, including footprints, metabolism, and meteor strikes; there is also a section on determining how many lawyers you need to feed a captive Tyrannosaurus rex. It's a remarkable fusion between scientific research--warts, conflicts, and all--and public understanding.

Book Description

While the inhabitants of the lost world have long held sway over our imaginations, in recent years dinosaur science has experienced an explosive growth. More books on dinosaurs have been published in the past decade than in all the previous 150 years since Richard Owen named these "fearfully great lizards," and dinosaur research continues to make headlines. Reporting the latest discoveries and research, this book is an exuberant celebration of dinosaurs and of our ongoing fascination with them. Here, in one volume, is the single, most-authoritative account of dinosaur paleontology for the general reader, illustrated with 350 drawings and black-and-white photos and 16 pages of color plates.

More than 350 illustrations, including 16 pages in full color Each chapter written by an expert in dinosaur studies Includes the latest dinosaur discoveries New information on the warm-blooded/cold-blooded debate New insights on the possibility of isolating dinosaur DNA What dinosaurs ate--and how we know about it Dinosaurs in the media A time-line of the history of dinosaur science And much, much more!

5 out of 5 stars Great breadth of topics, great quality........2006-05-07

This is a great intermediate level dinosaur book. It has a lot of details, but not enough to prevent non-experts from following it. It has 43 chapters divided into six parts. The chapters were written by experts in the individual subjects. This has the nice feature of making the chapters fairly independent, however it also makes the presentation a bit disjointed at times.

The first part deals with the process and history of discovering dinosaurs. The history of science isn't my favorite topic, so I just skimmed this part and can't really comment on it.

The second part describes the tools and techniques used to study dinosaurs. This includes excavations, the study of bones, taxonomy and cladistics, morphology, biomolecular techniques and exhibiting dinosaurs. There is a lot of interesting information, this material is fairly fundamental to the study of dinosaurs. Some of it is pretty easy to follow, some (like data management techniques) is a little more difficult to follow (for me anyway). None of it is prohibitively difficult.

Part three is a collection of chapters covering archosaurs, early dinosaurs and the various dinosaur families. Given that they were written by different authors, there is no consistent format for the chapters. I would have liked to have seen more material on how the families are related to each other. On the whole, I liked the level of detail.

Part four describes dinosaur biology. It contains a fascinating set of topics. A partial list of them is: plants in the Mesozoic, dinosaur diets, dinosaur dynamics, dinosaur eggs (covered in a nice amount of detail) and dinosaur paleopathology (a topic that doesn't often seem to get covered in this level of detail). In my experience many of these topics are somewhat neglected (either covered only lightly or not at all), this, and the quality, made it my favorite part of the book.

The fifth part deals with dinosaur evolution, including the way their environment changed thru time. It concludes with a discussion of dinosaur extinction, presenting both gradualist and catastrophist arguments.

The final part is one chapter covering how dinosaurs are portrayed in the media and how they are perceived by society.

Although the book had many authors, the quality is uniformly excellent. I generally liked the selection of topics. I wouldn't consider this an entry level book, but it's definitely readable by non-experts, I enjoyed the level of detail.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to dinosaur science.......2005-06-29

Do you want to get "into" Dinosaurs? This is the place to start. The Complete Dinosaur is a comprehensive introduction to what is currently known about dinosaurs and how it is known. From the history of the earliest fossil hunters to dinosaur biology, paleogeography and even an overview of dinosaurs in the media throughout the years.
The book is organized into chapters, each of which contains a deep look at its subject and yet is perfectly readable by laymen (such as myself). Even though many contributors wrote for this book, there is a sense of cohesiveness through the entire book. At a massive 768 pages, it is a very long read but seldom does it get tedious except perhaps a few chapters on dinosaur biology that get a bit too technical.
The book contains abundant references at the end of each chapter and a huge index a the end so it serves as a very useful reference on your library.
Other books that compare to this one are "The Scientific American Book of Dinosaurs" edited by Greg Paul and "Encylopedia of Dinosaurs" edited by Phil Currie, both renown paleontologists. "The Complete Dinosaur" is more comprehensive than the first one and is arranged in a more readable format than the second one which arranges its articles in alphabetic order.
The only weakness of the book is its age. Written in 1997 it is probably due to a revision given that the fiels of paleontology has been progressing by leaps and bounds in the last few decades.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Dinosaur.......2002-10-24

The Complete Dinosaur edited by James O. Farlow and M.K. Brett-Surman is a comprehensive book about dinosaurs. There are many contributors that have written chapter for this book, so you get different writing styles and information is duplicated at times.

This book is divided into six parts and each has chapters written by the various contributors. The parts are as follows:
Part One: The Discovery of Dinosaurs
Part Two: The Study of Dinosaurs
Part Three: The Groups of Dinosaurs
Part Four: Biology of the Dinosaurs
Part Five: Dinosaur Evolution in the Changing World of the Meszoic Era
Part Six: Dinosaurs and the Media

What I found that was very interesting was that at the end of each chapter there was extensive references. So, if you find something that piques your interest you have something else to read about, to either clarify or strengthen your viewpoint. Also, this makes the book easy to use when dealing with technical material.

This book summarizes the current knowledge about dinosaurs at the time written (1997), and currently there are only eighty professional dinosaur paleotologists in the world. This book is written like professional scientific literature, but that doesn't make it difficult to read. Reading on you will find this book is not without controversy, as vigorus disagreements among the specialists over topics of contention will be found here as they hash out these sharp divergences of opinion.

I must say, that there is some very fine artwork, with bone of skeletons, muscle structure and complete complete fleshed out dinosaurs giving the reader a full grasp of what a dinosar looks like from the inside out. Also, questions as to what dinosaurs ate, how they raised their young, and the question that was the turning point that made the movie Jurassic Park... can we isolate dinosaur DNA are just some of the many questions that have answers in this book.

All in all, the technical jargon is at a minimum and there is a glossary of terms making your reading much more fruitful. I found the narrative easy to read and the information from this book to be exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Inconstant but really great.......2001-06-08

This book is very dense and covers almost anything related to dinosaurs. It is clearly intended to non-pros but it does not lack scientifical value. However, because the book was written by many authors you'll find some chapters less well written than others and some information is duplicated. My advise is to not hesitate to buy this as your first dinosaur book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and up.......2006-06-01

Well, I had to go into a real bookstore to check out dinosaur books. The one drawback about shopping online, you really can't be sure what you're getting unless someone tells you. Well THIS book is great. Where most of the books I flipped through had an all around discussion of when, when, and how of dinosaurs, most of them didn't really show you many of the actual dinosaurs! I'll tell you what this book HAS. First, a really quick grouping of the different types of dinosaurs. At the beginning of each time period, you get a summary of what life was like at that time, a picture of the earth's continents, and who was where. After that it's ALL DINOSAURS! You get a well illustrated pic of each dinosuar listed, its size with comparison to an average height human, and it shows which period they lived in and where. There is a short one paragraph summary of the life and habits of each dinosaur. This is a really great book that gives you a lot of dinosaurs with info to help you understand. Not much about their digestive systems or how many leaves where on the plants around them. This- is a DINOSAUR BOOK!

We checked this out at the library. My nearly-three "read" it so often that he wound up tearing a page. We got it fixed up and then checked it out again. Finally, we decided to buy it. He loves the detailed drawings and illustrations. I like that there are lots of pages of drawings so he has something to look at for a good while. It is a "real" book, so it's a little dangerous in toddler hands. If they enjoy dinosaurs, though, this one should take you through the years. There's enough science info to be interesting through the middle school years.
This book is a great addition to your dinosaur lover's library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-06-08

This was a great book. I got it in 1993 and have liked it ever since. It lists every dinosaur from Nodosaurus, to Dryosaurus. It's got about two-hundred pages, and gives information on every animal and dinosaur in the book. It shows animals that aren't even dinosaurs, and if you like dinosaurs (Who Doesn't?), you will certainly enjoy this book.
