Book Description
This book is a unique compendium and synthesis of the cumulative knowledge of more than 100 years of discovery and study of North American tertiary mammals. The potentially most valuable contribution of this book is the detailed information of the distribution in time and space of each species at fossil localities, recorded in a uniform scheme, so that each chapter provides the same level of information. Thirty six chapters are devoted to a particular family or order, written by leading North American authorities, including discussion of anatomical features, systematics, and paleobiology. Three introductory chapters summarize information on the geological time scale, Tertiary vegetation, and Pleistocene events, and four summary chapters integrate systematic and biogeographic information for higher taxa. This book will serve as a unique data base for continuing studies in faunal diversification and change, and for questions such as how changing biogeography and climates influenced the evolution of mammalian communities. It will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of paleontologists and zoologists.
Customer Reviews:
very good but very overpriced.......2004-07-21
A very useful book for essentially all the genera of mammals in the groups listed in the title. The two things that kept me from giving it 5 stars are; it is VERY overpriced, aside from libraries, few can afford it, also the listings of localities are done a bit ackwardly. Overall a very useful resource.

Book Description
Wilson and Reeder's Mammal Species of the World is the classic reference book on the taxonomic classification and distribution of the more than 5400 species of mammals that exist today. The third edition includes detailed information on nomenclature and, for the first time, common names. Each concise entry covers type locality, distribution, synonyms, and major reference sources. The systematic arrangement of information indicates evolutionary relationships at both the ordinal and the family level. This indispensable reference work belongs in public and academic libraries throughout the world and on the shelf of every biologist who works with mammals.
Customer Reviews:
Good Product.......2006-03-16
Good book, useful, and essential for students and scientists interested to work with mammals.
a mammalogist bible.......2001-10-22
without doubt Wilson and Reeder's book is THE source of information for people looking for mammals in museums and old scientific publications. the superb listing of synonyms, the listings of the scientist describing the clades, and the brief biogeographic notes makes this book invaluable for people having any taxonomic question. The main attitude seems to be one of splitters, giving a lot of specific names to various populations others consider a single species, the biogeography can be a little more detailed, but there is no other source with that thoroughness and completeness in mammalian taxonomy.
I'm anxiously waiting a new edition

Book Description
A powerful predator, revealed here by an acclaimed nature photographer.
The polar bear is the largest terrestrial carnivore, uniquely adapted to thrive in the harsh environment of the Far North. In
The World of the Polar Bear, renowned nature photographer Norbert Rosing follows the polar bear through each season.
With its thorough and engaging text and spectacular photography, the book provides:
- A season-by-season account of the life of the polar bear, including feeding, mating, rearing of cubs and journeying from the ice
- An intimate look at the animals that share the polar bear's environment, including seals, arctic foxes, walruses and muskoxen

Great book, amazing price.......2007-02-08
This is is a beautiful coffee tableThis is a beautiful coffee table book that is under-serviced by its photos online. The quality of the pictures, text and even the manufacturing are excellent. It makes for an amazing gift for anyone who appreciates Polar Bears, Nature or even art books in general.
Fab Bears.......2007-01-10
Anyone who appreciates photography and has a love for wildlife will want to buy this book. I ordered it right after my return from Churchill, Manitoba, where a lot of the pictures were taken. I had seen it while in Churchill at close to $50.00. It is absolutely fabulous, and I am extremely jealous of mine. It just makes me want to go back again and again to see those incredible creatures once more.
Beautiful Photos.......2006-12-28
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys wildlife or nature. The photos are amazing and there is just enough information about each picture. I've never seen more breathe taking pictures of polar bears and their habitat.

Book Description
The National Audubon Society Guide to Marine Mammals of the World describes in fascinating detail all 120 species of the world's whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea lions, manatees, Marine and Sea Otters, and the Polar Bear. Written by a team of experts and featuring more than 320 illustrations, 418 photographs, and 123 maps, this new guide offers more authoritative, up-to-date, and accessible information than any book previously published on the subject.
Organized by the four major groups of marine mammals—marine fissipeds, pinnipeds, cetaceans, and sirenians—the species descriptions include:
Full-color paintings, some depicting males and females, juveniles, subspecies, or special features. Color photographs showing appearance in the wild and illustrating typical behaviors. Life history data, including length and weight at various life stages, and life span. Range and habitat text and a full-color range map based on the most current information. Facts about social organization, surface behaviors, swimming, and diving. Information on mating behavior, breeding, and the rearing of young. Details about food items and foraging techniques. Estimates of population in the wild, plus current and historic threats.
A general introduction outlines the evolution and taxonomy of marine mammals, distribution, migration, watching guidelines, identification techniques, organizations and laws that protect marine mammals, and more.
Introductions to groups include comparative size illustrations, discussion of behaviors particular to the group, and other unique features.
A useful illustrated glossary of terms and an index of species names complete the guide.
Exquisitely detailed illustrations, stunning photographs, and clearly written text combine to make this an indispensible reference source for marine mammal watchers and anyone interested in the natural world.

Superb book.......2007-01-18
This book is really great as it's full of very informative and interesting facts as well lots of colour photos and every species mentioned is illustrated. Excellent.
National Audubon Society Guide to Marine Mammals of the World.......2007-01-12
This is the only book we use on the Monterey Peninsula to go out whale watching with. It identifies quickly and covers all the marine mammals. Perfect field guide.
Awesome.......2005-08-18
This books is very informational. I have gotten a lot of information from it and the pictures are fabulous! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Marine Mammals. My daughter wants to be a Marine Biologist/Marine Mammal Trainer and this book gave her all the right information at the right time.
Much more than expected!.......2004-07-08
Audubon has certainly delivered their best in this marine life field guide! When I bought this, I expected it to be the usual good Audubon repeat of their previous field guides. I was quite impressed by the number of species inserted, and the special illustrations used along with it. There are a surprising number of families and subspecies listed also.
The whales and dolphins section is the best part of the guide, listing rare and endangered species. I don't suspect anyone has heard of the "Tucuxi" dolphin, have they? Rather than just listing commonly seen or normal species, Audubon has done extensive research on others, and has inserted dozens or more in each family section, making identification completely unmistakable. The seals and sea lions covered are no different in variety and number of listings. However, many of the seals listed are subspecies of 6 previous listings.
The binding is usual quality by Audubon publishers, making an excellent reading book, whether on a boat trip, in a car, or simply in an easy chair at home. Forget other Marine Mammal Guides, and make an extensive search for this!
Very informative, but a few minor quibbles.......2004-04-30
I picked this book up at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago (inspired by the walrus exhibit). It is a very informative guide and beautifully illustrated.
I would hazard to guess that this book is intended for the "arm-chair naturalist." Very few of us can afford vacations to the distant locales where many of the marine mammals in this book live.
The book is laid out like the typical birding guide: species description, similar species, habitat and natural history.
With this in mind, I was disapointed to find the "species describtion" and the "similar species" sections of the species accounts were often longer than the behavior and natural history sections. I do want to know how a Swainson's Thrush is similar to a Grey-checked Thrush (two similar birds), but I really do not care how to tell apart two endimic Antarctic seals. I would much rather read more about how their lives are lived.
My only other quibble is with the "status and conversation" sections of the species accounts. While it is certainlly true that many marine mammals are threatened and endangerd, it is also true that many marine mammals (such as harbor seals and bottle nose dolphins) are doing just fine. The authors of the book seem reluctant to admit this.
Both of these are minor quibbles. If you are even remotely curious about the variety of marine mammals in the world, this book is certainly for you.

Book Description
Little Groundhog, in trouble for stealing from his friends' gardens, is taught by Squirrel to grow his very own. From seed-gathering to planting, harvesting, and eating home-grown fruits and vegetables, children join Little Groundhog in learning about the gardening process. At the end, Little Groundhog invites his animal friends to a Thanksgiving harvest feast. Beautiful illustrations and thorough research on plants and insects make this sweet story an engrossing read, as well as a great picture-book introduction to how plants grow. Children and schools can follow Groundhog's lessons.
Customer Reviews:
Enchanting children's book!.......2006-03-20
This book is utterly charming! I have to admit, I bought it for our toddler because I fell in love with the drawings and wanted to own a copy. The book tells the story of a little groundhog who learns all about growing his own food from his mentor, a squirrel. The story takes us through the whole year, and Ms. Cherry's illustrations of animals and plants are wonderful! We have a small vegetable garden every year, and I believe my son will know more of what goes on in the garden this year. The book will also appeal to an older child, as it gets into things like pollination, but my son loves this book!
A warm picturebook tale of animal friends.......2003-07-27
Lynne Cherry's How Groundhogs Garden Grew may require parental assistance but kids with some prior picturebook skills will relish this story of a little groundhog who loves to eat the vegetables in his neighbor's garden. The cycle of a gardening year is told within the structure of a warm picturebook tale of animal friends, and the drawings are especially engaging.
Great way to get kids interested in gardening.......2003-02-21
My three year old and I are planning a garden and this book has been an excellent companion to the process. Cherry does a great job of explaining how to create a garden through this story. In it Squirrel teaches Groundhog how to grow his own vegetables so he has things to eat. Cherry also includes a note to parents at the end that gives website information for more on gardening with children.
Charming yet factual.......2003-02-02
This is a wonderful book, bound to be a classic. Would appeal to any children, but especially those involved in starting a vegetable garden.

Bambi comes into the world in a forest glade, loved by his mother, protected by a thicket. He grows up frolicking in the meadow, befriending butterflies and screech owls, and learning about the dark fear of all the woodland creatures: man. Over time, Bambi seeks out the wisdom of the prince of deer, a magnificent old stag who walks alone through the paths of the forest. Bambi is torn between his desire to be with his beloved mate, Faline, and his yearning for the knowledge and solitude the prince represents. He is also conflicted about his friend Gobo, who has returned to the forest after a winter living among humans. Gobo behaves unnaturally by strolling through the woods by day when other deer are sleeping, showing no fear of his natural mortal enemy.
This 1926 classic has been stretched and squeezed into many forms over the years, but the Felix Salten original should not be missed. With the richer, more highly wrought language of his time, Salten crafts a story layered in meaning, weighty with its message. The sometimes cruel, often joyful cycle of life continues, in spite of those who try to defy nature's law. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
When Bambi is born on a spring morning deep in a forest glade, so begins one of the most moving and beloved of all children's stories. As the curious fawn grows into a majestic stag, he is exposed to all the beauty, hardship, and danger of the natural world. Bambi learns how to forage for food in winter and experiences the joy of frolicking in an open field in summer. He makes friends -- the wise old owl, the good hare, the chattery squirrels. And he confronts Man, the most feared of all creatures in the forest.
Janet Schulman, Steve Johnson, and Lou Fancher have brilliantly adapted and reillustrated Felix Salten's classic novel to create a storybook perfectly suited for young readers. Children who loved Walt Disney's animated film and those who have an abiding interest in the natural world will be enchanted by this stunning presentation of an unforgettable tale.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-06-27
My son really enjoyed this story. He was entertained since it had differences from the one "Bambi" story everyone is familiar with.
Bambi.......2006-11-10
I purchased this book for my 8 year old who needed it for a school project. The vocabulary used in this book is a bit difficult. I also found it to be quite different than the Disney movie and other written versions of the story. The author, Felix Salten, uses elaborate descriptions and you will feel as if you are actually in the woods with the deer! I recommend this book, but please be aware that it is not "sugar coated" like the movie!
THIS IS NOT UNCLE WALT'S VERSION.......2006-09-22
I love this work. This of course the the story that was made into the now classic animated Disney film. This not not like the Disney film at all. Now I am rather fond of the film and can remember my mother taking it to it shortly after the war (WWII) and of course have since taken my children and grandchildren to see the same. This book/story though, is far superior in my opinion. Actually, read as an adult, it is quite profound, dealing with quite a number of issues. Relationships between parent and child, child and peers and nature and man. I do not feel you can classify this work as an antihunting story. It more or less puts and keeps man in his place in the big picture of things, for better or for worse. Like another reviewer, I was particularly fascinated with Bambi's friend who became a "pet of man." There is a lesson here as to following ones nature. I am not sure I completely understand the message, but know it is there. Yes, this work does deal with death and dying and yes there is sad parts. I personally don't feel children should be sheltered from such things completely as they all will eventually have to face the same feelings and dilemmas. I hate to use the word "classic" as it is quite often over used, but know of no other way to describe this one. I do highly recommend it.
The best book I've ever read!.......2006-06-26
Before I read this book, I was a fanatic of the movie Bambi. I still am, but it's very different from the book and it seems like 15 minutes after you read the book. I could see EVERYTHING that was described in the text of the book. It really has an effect on emotions. Some things are lighthearted, some things are truly heart breaking, there's even a few laughs. Everything is described in much detail. I felt like, at one point, that I was Bambi running for the first time in the meadow, drinking in the warm air. I could hear the dogs barking, the hoofbeats, and the gunshots. I HIGHLY recommend it to nature lovers and fans of the film. Now I just need to read Bambi's Children!
Bambi.......2006-03-24
People think of Bambi as being a book for young children. It is actually a strong political statement. It is very interesting for adults as well. You may or may not agree with the political statement.

In 1898 John H. Patterson arrived in East Africa with a mission to build a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. What started out as a simple engineering problem, however, soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly Indian workforce were systematically hunted by two man-eating lions over the course of several weeks. During that time, 100 workers were killed, and the entire bridge-building project ground to a halt. As if the lions weren't enough, Patterson had to guard his back against his own increasingly hostile and mutinous workers as he set out to track and kill the man-eaters. This larger-than-life tale forms the basis of the entertaining film The Ghost and the Darkness, but for readers who want to know the whole--and true--story, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo comes straight from the great white-hunter's mouth.
Patterson's account of the lions' reign of terror and his own subsequent attempts to kill them is the stuff of great adventure, and his unmistakably Victorian manner of telling it only adds to the thrill. Consider this description of the aftermath of an attack by the lions: "...we at once set out to follow the brutes, Mr. Dalgairns feeling confident that he had wounded one of them, as there was a trail on the sand like that of the toes of a broken limb.... we saw in the gloom what we at first took to be a lion cub; closer inspection, however, showed it to be the remains of the unfortunate coolie, which the man-eaters had evidently abandoned at our approach. The legs, one arm and half the body had been eaten, and it was the stiff fingers of the other arm trailing along the sand which had left the marks we had taken to be the trail of a wounded lion...." This classic tale of death, courage, and terror in the African bush is still a page-turner, even after all these years.
Book Description
Considered to be one of the most famous stories of man-eating lions in modern times, "The Man-Eaters of Tsavo" is the first-hand account of Lieutanant-Colonel John Henry Patterson's encounter with several man-eating lions during the building of the Uganda railway through British East Africa in 1898. Contained within this volume is the original 1907 book with over a hundred photographs and illustrations.

It is with feelings of the greatest diffidence that I place the following pages before the public; but those of my friends who happen to have heard of my rather unique experiences in the wilds have so often urged me to write an account of my adventures, that after much hesitation I at last determined to do so.

Classic Tail of Adventure.......2007-09-04
If you liked the Ghost and the Darkness you will like this book. The first half of the book Patterson recounts the trails and tribulation of hunting the to man eating lions. Patterson does this in a very British and Victorian why, yet it remains easily readable and hold your attention quite well. The second half of the book Patterson recount several other exciting hunting adventures he had while in Africa. All of them quite interesting and worth reading. Patterson's tails are grab your attention and hold you throughout the book.

Victorian adventure literature at its finest.......2007-01-23
If you like Victorian writing, if you like tales of adventure, and if you don't mind self-aggrandizing and possibly exaggerated reading, then this is the book for you. Colonel John Patterson's enormous imperial endeavour - building a bridge for the "lunatic line" across Africa - brings him into contact with a pair of man-eating lions. The story never lacks imaginative story-telling, and neither does it lack that Victorian-esque spirit of conquest (in all things) and patriarchal service to the 'noble savage.' Yet it is a wonderful story, perhaps popularised by the movie, and it will certainly stir nostalgic imaginations for years to come.
Wonderful First-Hand Account of Life in Africa.......2006-11-11
I was prompted to buy this book after seeing Jeff Corwin reading it on "The Corwin Experience." I thoroughly enjoyed it although toward the end I was getting a little tired of hearing about Patterson's hunting expeditions.
It's a window into a different time and place. And then there are the lions!

Fabulous interactive book.......2007-07-05
We count, we name the animals, and we sing while reading this book. How many 2 years old can name the snake, coyote, bat, firefly, possum, platypus and tell you there are skyscrapers on the last page. Very exciting book, my 2 year old loves it.
Good way to teach counting.......2006-02-24
My two and a half year old son loves this book. We count each of the stars on each page.
Starlight, Star Bright.......2006-01-04
The Baby Einstein product line has established a reputation for developing creative educational products that children enjoy, and BABY GALILEO SEES THE STARS is no exception. It is a concept book that combines counting with elements of astronomy in a way that will capture the attention of even the youngest of readers. The simple opening line "Ten stars twinkle," is indicative of the uncomplicated text in the book, yet, it is the illustrations that really bring the book to life. Each page includes three-dimensional stars that correspond with the number of stars mentioned in the text. The book counts down from ten and with each turn of the page, one of the stars disappear. In addition, each line includes an adjective describing a quality of stars, such as twinkle, sparkle or glow. By the last page, all of the stars have disappeared, but a moon (which lights up when the page is displayed) is depicted.
The illustrations in BABY GALILEO SEES THE STARS include various nighttime scenes and feature such elements as telescopes, bats, and an array of sleeping animals. Parents will find useful information on the back of the book that covers how the book can be used as a teaching tool or as a bridge to other activities. My son most enjoys pointing to each star as we count them together. This book is a wonderful way to reinforce pre-reading and pre-math skills with toddlers and to foster an early interest in science.
