Book Description
This photo of Escherichia coli being attacked by bacteriophages highlights rapidly developing technologies for using phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections without destroying normal resident bacteria, and without side effects. Phages are also being used to detect and remove pathogens from our food supplies, both plant and animal. Also exciting is the use of phages as vehicles to delivery DNA vaccines, often directly to mammalian immune system cells. Recent work also suggests possible antitumor effects of phages. We stand on the edge of a whole new world of exploration and applications of microbiology.
For over 20 years, and through five editions, Black's Microbiology: Principles and Explorations has captured students' imaginations. Her enthusiasm, passion, and knack for memorable stories and anecdotes bring the study of microbiology to life in a way few other texts can match.
Now updated to reflect the latest topics in the field (e.g., SARS, bioterrorism, GMO's, geomicrobiology) and accompanied by state-of-the-art animations of key concepts, this new edition is sure to help inspire a new generation of enthusiasts for the dynamic science of microbiology.
Critical Acclaim
"I continue to find Black's text an excellent contribution to undergraduate Microbiology education." --Karen Messley, Rock Valley College
"I like the conversational and informal style Black adopts throughout the book. This is a book, which could very well engage even the most reluctant student. It is comprehensive, nicely detailed, and incorporates many aids to teaching and learning..."--Iris Cook, Westchester CC
"[The text] is a wonderful introduction into the world of microorganisms for students from a wide variety of backgrounds."--Jeff G. Leid, Northern Arizona University
"...I have found it [the book] accurate to a fault, brilliant at getting students motivated and interested in microbiology, and a great practical training book."--Gerard O'Donovan, University of North Texas

It's ok.......2006-02-19
It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).
Lots of typos and missing info........2006-01-07
Good study guide when the answers were in the back. Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent. If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader? For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed. The textbook is great.
Wonderfully Informative Book!!!.......2005-12-12
WOW! I love this book. Every time I read part of it I learn so much stuff that I never knew before. It is fairly advanced information but it is written in a very understandable way. I am in high school and I like it because it teaches in the same format as my school's biology text books. I use this book because I like to read about this stuff. It is so facinating. If you are in a high school biology class, read this and you will be light years ahead of every one else!
Great book for teachers and students.......2005-09-17
This text explains some very complex information in a very reader-friendly way. The photos, charts and practical examples of how microbiology impacts everyone's life make it very readable. I would recommend it for teachers and students!
Micro Made Easy.......2005-09-14
This is one of the best text books I have ever used. The information is clear, concise, and interesting. It gives examples throughout the book of how microbiology is being used now to help us.

Customer Reviews:
Beware of the digital upgrade.......2007-09-05
I wanted to forwarn other users, especially students, of the pitfalls of the digital upgrade option:
1) Don't buy the upgrade if you're hoping to get access to it through the library computers, instead of having to lug the massive book to school. Apparently, you cannot view any online book from more than 7 different computers within a 30 day period. And, consequently, if the cache happens to get cleared after each session (as is the case with most shared computers), then you're limited to only 7 sessions with ANY computer.
2) Beware that the book is hard to read online. It's great for adding annotations (highlighting text, adding bookmarks, typing notes, etc.), but it's a real strain on the eyes if you try to read a full chapter. The text is low contrast (gray on white) and low resolution. Even when you use the Zoom-in feature (which lets you increase the size a little bit), it's still hard on the eyes. The text is still just blurry enough to make you think you might need glasses. After several chapters, you probably will need glasses :-)
You can check the quality first by viewing the Preview. That's representative of the whole book. Try reading an entire page and decide for yourself. On the plus side, if you do buy the book, and realize that these issues really do pose a problem for you, Amazon lets you request a refund, as long as you have viewed less than 20% of the book. 20% of 1300 pages is a lot, so you should be fine.
From Start to End.......2007-03-28
This is a great educational text. Each chapter starts from cellular level and progresses to the functional and clinical level. Being a chiropractor and working with the spine everyday I need to understand exactly where the problem starts and not focus on the symptoms. This text has allowed me to understand what is neurophysiologically going on with my patients and improve their course of treatment. As described the neurological system is the electricity of the body and if a fuse decides to blow you need to know where to look.
Impressive for a textbook.......2007-02-13
As far as textbooks go, this has to be one of the best that I have come across...and I have come across quite a few. The material is divided into closely related sections, and the text is clear and to the point in its explanation. Not much filler text or needless material. The diagrams are pretty clear and well positioned in the sections also.
Great Reference Book.......2007-01-06
The text is extremely clear and to the point. The diagrams are also simple to understand. Every major topic in neurosci is discussed, allowing you to get an excellent foundation such that you could read any recent publications on that topic and understand completely what the authors are referring to.
A Masterful Medical Book of Great Importance Written by a Nobel Laureate!.......2006-06-07
I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work. This is Principles of Neural Science. having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing. If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics. But returning to his epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece. The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science. I have found it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover. The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose. Do as I have done and preorder the new edition. Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve. Believe me I am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations. I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

Customer Reviews:
great.......2007-01-04
I found the the book in a very good shape. I'm very much satisfied.
Fascinating material.......2005-06-18
I used this book for one of my favorite classes in college on biotechnology. It will show you the cool side of science and all of the neat things you can do with biology and DNA. The level is low enough to where you only need a minimal background to understand it, basic biology classes and preferably genetics. After completing the book you should be excited about the future of biotech, and you will have some understanding about how it works.
Good introductory material for the technical.......2001-05-11
To those who are interested in the functional aspects of the DNA this is the right introductory stuff. It covers areas including basic molecular biology to commercial methods for manipulating the genes. Pretty useful for someone who's more interested in the technology than the biology!
Good overview but lacks technical rigor.......2000-04-07
I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department. Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in a somewhat shallow and repetitive way. I have also seen clearer and more concise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, and there is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area. This is not necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora of information found in the biotechnology field. If someone wants a broad review of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you want to focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else.
Book Description
Thorough and accessible, this book presents the design principles of biological systems, and highlights the recurring circuit elements that make up biological networks. It provides a simple mathematical framework which can be used to understand and even design biological circuits. The text avoids specialist terms, focusing instead on several well-studied biological systems that concisely demonstrate key principles. An Introduction to Systems Biology: Design Principles of Biological Circuits builds a solid foundation for the intuitive understanding of general principles. It encourages the reader to ask why a system is designed in a particular way and then proceeds to answer with simplified models.
Customer Reviews:
Clear, rigorous, fascinating.......2007-01-20
I'm a Ph.D. student in biophysics. This is the best treatment of systems biology that I've encountered. It treats both the math and the biology with clarity, rigor, and respect. It simplifies without dumbing down. It's beautifully written. If you doubt that systems biology is a real scientific discipline, this book will change your mind.
Building Mathematical Models of Cells.......2006-09-25
The history of science over the past few centuries is to become ever more specialized. The physicists, becomming ever more concerned with the very large (stars, galaxies, the cosmos) or the very tiny (first atoms, then atomic components, now sub-components. The biologists on the other hand were studying much larger things, such as the cells that make up life. Both sciences developed techniques to facilitate their study.
In recent years, researchers have discovered that sometimes these specialized techniques can be used to develop greater insight into what is happening in other sciences.
In this book, Dr. Alon uses his training in physics to examine certain aspects of biology and to use the terminology and mathematics to describe the way these biological networks work.
The goal of the book is to begin the formulation of general laws that apply to biological networks. This is done by providing a mathematical framework in which some of the design principles of biological systems can help to understand biological networks. In looking at the results, an underlying simplicity not seen before appears in biological systems.
Great Job.......2006-09-09
A superb intro to the field. The math is moderate and helpful. Network concepts and their ties to examples and theory are clearly and succinctly presented. This is a textbook but reads easily like a book. Covers key elements while connecting them by at least mention to up-to-date further research. The basics and the grandeur of systems biology. I am trying to remember now anything on the negative side and cannot.

Book Description
Marcello Pagano and Kimberlee Gauvreau's PRINCIPLES OF BIOSTATISTICS, Second Edition is a concepts-based introduction to statistical procedures that prepares public health, medical, and life sciences students to conduct and evaluate research. With an engaging writing style and helpful graphics, the emphasis is on concepts over formulas or rote memorization. Throughout the book, the authors use practical, interesting examples with real data to bring the material to life.
Customer Reviews:
Complicated language .......2007-09-29
The language in this book is very hard to understand. I took statistics when I was an undergrad and but this book is so hard to understand. The authors tried to show more steps in the math examples maybe try to make it easier for the reader but it just make it MUCH more complicated to follow. Sometimes I have to read my undergrad statistics book in order for me to understand the same thing it says in this book.
Principles of Biostatistics.......2007-09-19
This book does not give step-by-step instructions on how to solve problems. Therefore, I feel it is not a good book. I still feel very lost after reading chapters in this book.
Hope this suggestion helps u decide.......2007-09-09
This is my first time that I purchased online. I got the book within 3 days and it's in a good condition. Cheaper, got a book, and on time...isn't it enough?
Biostatistics simplified.......2007-06-27
Much easier to grasp than another text on the subject that I have experienced, (Biostatistics... A foundation for anlaysis in the Health Sciences; 8th Edition. Wayne W. Daniel). I am an MPH student with limited math background. Had a 4.0 going before my first experience with biostats. A "D" won't cut it in the program I am completing. Found an alternative Biostats course and the required text,(Principles of Biostats;Marcello Pagano), is much, much, easier for me to grasp. The real world examples and simplified methods make for an easier comprehension for those of us who lack a strong mathematic prerequisite.
Great book - one of few!.......2007-03-23
I've read the other reviews, and seems either you love it or hate it. I used this at Harvard School of Public Health on my 3rd time through bio-statistics (college, med school, MPH). Only this time I got it right, and think it was the balance between some non-calculus theory and practical examples in this book. Not understanding probability distributions at all leads to misapplication, and misuse. I have frequently turned to this as "tune-up book" if I've been away too long. The exercised sets are helpful and "realistic"; however, I do understand the problem with text-books and teacher's manuals that give only 1/2 the answers.
Book Description
Provides immediate help for anyone preparing a biomedical paper by givin specific advice on organizing the components of the paper, effective writing techniques, writing an effective results sections, documentation issues, sentence structure and much more. The new edition includes new examples from the current literature including many involving molecular biology, expanded exercises at the end of the book, revised explanations on linking key terms, transition clauses, uses of subheads, and emphases. If you plan to do any medical writing, read this book first and get an immediate advantage.
Customer Reviews:
A good overview about how to write in biomedical research.......2007-03-09
A good book for beginers, clear and easy to read.
good book for those writing their dissertation and other papers.......2007-01-04
we used this book as part of a class i was taking. i am so glad that the professor picked this one out!
the beginning of the book gives you the building blocks, and the later chapters help you put it all together. i realized that a lot of people who help you with proofreading don't really look for some of the organizational items that the author stresses.
i reccommend this book for any graduate student, as well as anyone else who is looking to improve their writing. it might also be a good tool for mentors to use to work with their students.
Great ! .......2006-08-21
My close friend who is one of the nicest person I ever met, recommended me this book. Upon opening the first chapter, I already know that this book is amazing. My writing improves a lot. If you are an international student like me, you might also have hard time on writing as well. I guaranteed that this book is really invaluable.
Very good book, examples used bit too technical.......2005-10-21
Very good book for beginners and experienced researchers! I haven't come across any other book that actually describes how you should write a biomedical paper. The only critique is that the examples used are too technical for non-biomedical researchers, this makes it hard to understand the examples. But even if you do not have a biomedical background you will learn a lot from this book.
Authoritative.......2003-11-12
Authoritative guide on how to write. I have never seen a more comprehensive book on how to write clearly and write well. I would give it 6 stars if I could. Even non-scientists should read this. (Having said that, though, scientists IN PARTICULAR should read this - hint, hint.)

Linear Systems and Signals (The Oxford Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering)
ASIN: 0471251232 |
Book Description
This new Second Edition addresses the latest in picture archiving and communications systems (PACS), from the electronic patient record to the full range of topics in digital imaging. In contrast to the previous edition, this updated text uses the framework of image informatics, not physics or engineering principles, to explain PACS. This book is the only resource that thoroughly covers the critical issues of hardware/software design and implementation in a systematic and easily comprehensible manner.
The new edition features additional chapters on web-based PACS, security, integrating the healthcare enterprise, clinical management systems, and the electronic patient record.
It addresses how PACS can improve workflow, therapy, and treatment, and discusses integration of PACS in hospitals. Offering a clear guide for those purchasing and installing PACS, it is written in clear, non-technical language by a widely acknowledged pioneer in the field and does not assume advanced knowledge of physics, engineering, or math principles. The text also contains substantive new treatment of key topics in image informatics, including light imaging, digital radiography, teleconsultation, and image archive servers.
Customer Reviews:
Quality Issue ?.......2007-05-15
The context of the book definately meets my expectations. The book provides a complete overview of PACs I am a bit concerned as to to quality of the book. The binding has already started to become loose in one section. the book has not been abused in any way. Carried in a briefcase and read at home. May be just this copy.

good with an adjunct.......2005-04-14
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysical and biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommended to all biology students.
Excellent reference.......2003-05-09
This book is an invaluable source of information not only for those studying about various practical techniques but even those engaged in experiments in a lab environment. Written more as an overview, it works to familiarize the reader with the principles of both experimental protocols and the equipment that might be used, for example centrifuges. It's very useful to go back to it from time to time to get a refresher on techniques that I might use on a regular basis but might not remember all the details of. Highly recommended. It's also written quite simply, which unfortunately is not the case for all biology texts.
A useful, informative guide to practical biology.......1998-01-04
This book would be especially useful to science students engaging in a predominantly practical-based biological course.

Book Description
Principles of Human Anatomy, the market-leading text through its many editions, successfully blends visual and textual elements to illuminate the complexities of human anatomy. A host of carefully crafted pedagogical aids support both the succinctly written narrative as well as the outstanding illustration program. Clinical applications, popular with students, represent a variety of clinical perspectives and provide both relevance and motivation for students as they study. The ninth edition of the text continues to break new ground in a modern day anatomy textbook by offering students a glimpse into the fascinating history of how we have come to know what we do, opportunities to explore structure from diverse perspectives, and insights into the vital contributions that anatomical knowledge brings to the understanding of functions and diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Tortora is a god.......2004-12-17
I love this book with all my body including my pee pee.
As a med student, you spend a lot of time in your chum hole with your pirate crew. During this time you surf the net, watch cool videos and gorge. But when its close to PBL time your like "WTF!" and need to write some stuff down.
What do you reach for?!
Kumar and Clarke? Only if you want rabies
The answer to all your prayers is Tortora!
It has all the information you would ever want to know about medicine such as how chest movement is similar to bucket handle movement.
Tortora is THE greatest person on this earth EVER! There was this one time when he was in a cafe and this dude dropped a spoon and he totally flipped out and killed the whole village.
Im in the process of finding a victim so i can have children and call them Tortora in his honour. When i go to bed at night i pray to him and when i wake up aroused i am already thinking of him.
Buy this book or i will commit reverse seppuka
Principles of Human Anatomy.......2004-05-26
I only wish my teacher had chosen another book. Many times the author goes on rambling on and on where a body part is located from each other and only confuses the reader and never mentions the function of the body part or with only a simple explanation. Like for example: The greater wings of the sphenoid project laterally from the body, forming the anterolateral floor of the cranium. The greater wings also form part of the lateral wall of the skull just anterior to the temporal bone. The lesser wings, which are smaller than the greater wings, form a ridge of bone anterior and superior to the greater wings. They form part of the floor of the cranium and the posterior part of the orbit. And it ends with that. OK, so what I say! Who cares where the part is located, I can see that for myself in the picture; I want to know something relevant with the part. Also, it is very rare when the pictures is on the same page as the body part; you have to keep flipping the pages back and forth to follow the author's description. I just finished his axial skeleton section and my comment is: it is going to be torture reading the author's dry and immaterial way of writing. The author writes as if he is hiding something from you and you have to dig around to get the information. This is the 9th edition and renew every 3 years when there hasn't been a new anatomical part discovered in decades; ploy to keep the money bag flowing. I only hope that in the 10th or perhaps, the 15th edition the author will let us in on what he is trying to convey. Maybe by then Tortora can get it right.
Useful & Thorough Anatomy Text.......2002-12-05
I've found this textbook a useful self-study guide. It is set up logically by body system with accessible pronunciations and definitions and with each chapter building on the next. The illustrations are detailed, informative and easy to follow. Each chapter also contains practical information relating to today's medical practices as it pertains to each body system. I was not as impressed with the companion "A Photographic Atlas of the Human Body" as I prefer illustrations over cadaver photos.
Very goog Human Anatomy.......2001-12-26
This is a nice Human Anatomy Book. The Structure of the book based on Systems in human body rather than zones.I believe this gives a better overall view of the human body. Much better than that author gives explanation of every name first its pronounciation and than its meaning in original language.Pictures are mostly schematic, very few photographs of cut bodies, some scanning electron pictures were very nice.Together with this book I recommend Organ and Tissue book with scanning electron pictures. I also liked the littel windows called "clinical Application; that brings you into real world. Overall I liked it very much, it is more than just parts of body. It is with information and applications.
