Book Description

Protein Physics is a lively presentation of the most general problems of protein structure, folding and function from the physics and chemistry perspective, based on lectures given by the authors. It deals with fibrous, membrane and, most of all, with the best studied water-soluble globular proteins, in both their native and denatured states. The major aspects of protein physics are covered systematically, physico-chemical properties of polypeptide chains; their secondary structures; tertiary structures of proteins and their classification; conformational transitions in protein molecules and their folding; intermediates of protein folding; folding nuclei; physical backgrounds of coding the protein structures by their amino acid sequences and protein functions in relation to the protein structure. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate level students and researchers of biophysics, biochemistry, biology and material science.

* Designed for a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as being a reference for researchers in academia and industry
* Covers the most general problems of protein structure, folding, and function and introduces the key concepts and theories
* Deals with fibrous, membrane and especially water-soluble globular proteins, in both their native and denatured states
* Summarizes and presents in a systematic form the results of several decades of world wide fundamental research on protein physics, structure and folding
* Examines experimental data on protein structure in the post-genome era

5 out of 5 stars The true science from the true scientists.......2007-07-05

A clearly, yet thoroughly physical point of view constitutes the framework of this book. Written by pioneers in the field of protein physics, the book amazingly guides the readers to "think" of protein and raises fundamental questions in the field of soft-condensed matter physics. A must for everyone who wants to have a correct and scientific vision of proteins.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-12-13

This is a magnificent book, remarkable for its breadth, depth, and accessibility.

Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.

To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.

Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

University of Southern California

5 out of 5 stars Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics': a book of worth........2002-11-10

A book of worth from the legendary institution, PhysTech (Moscow). Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics' is a valuable source of information on folding thermodynamics and kinetics both to beginners and professionals in this (and related) fields. No more words. Strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book on this subject.......2002-10-08

Excellent book for both beginners and experts. I will recommend it to students as a source of initial knowledge not only on proteins, but also on biopolymers and biophysics in general. For instance, presentation of forces is superb. I am also positive that every expert will find new non trivial insights on great many subtle points of this difficult topic.

Book Description

This is the second edition of a highly successful textbook (over 50,000 copies sold) in which a highly illustrated, narrative text is combined with easy-to-use thoroughly reliable laboratory protocols. It contains a fully up-to-date collection of 12 rigorously tested and reliable lab experiments in molecular biology, developed at the internationally renowned Dolan DNA Learning Center of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, which culminate in the construction and cloning of a recombinant DNA molecule.

Proven through more than 10 years' of teaching at research and nonresearch colleges and universities, junior colleges, community colleges, and advanced biology programs in high school, this book has been successfully integrated into introductory biology, general biology, genetics, microbiology, cell biology, molecular genetics, and molecular biology courses.

The first eight chapters have been completely revised, extensively rewritten, and updated. The new coverage extends to the completion of the draft sequence of the human genome and the enormous impact these and other sequence data are having on medicine, research, and our view of human evolution. All sections on the concepts and techniques of molecular biology have been updated to reflect the current state of laboratory research.

The laboratory experiments cover basic techniques of gene isolation and analysis, honed by over 10 years of classroom use to be thoroughly reliable, even in the hands of teachers and students with no prior experience. Extensive prelab notes at the beginning of each experiment explain how to schedule and prepare, while flow charts and icons make the protocols easy to follow.

As in the first edition of this book, the laboratory course is completely supported by quality-assured products from the Carolina Biological Supply Company, from bulk reagents, to useable reagent systems, to single-use kits, thus satisfying a broad range of teaching applications.

5 out of 5 stars My High School Textbook.......2007-07-04

This was used for my high school semester course "DNA Sci part 1" textbook used with Watson's Recombinant DNA textbook. DNA Science:A 1st Course, 2nd edi was useful in supplementing the updates in recent genetic advances and some newer, better graphic representations. I found this to be an easy textbook to read, although not intended for those without a biology and chemistry background since the book does not waste much ink on describing what should have already been learned. The other students in my class seemed to find this book to be a clear, understandable textbook as well.

A very good first course textbook that keeps a student (or any person) interested. Nice big, clear print as well. The laboratories were the standard same as in the Recombinant DNA textbook.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2005-08-03

I havent read much of this yet, we really wont be using much until the second quarter but so far it seems not bad i hope this review is as helpful to you as it would have been for me oh yeah dna is interesting

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Genetic Science.......2005-07-28

This is the best single source of information on Genetic Science I have run across. Comprehensive from history, to theory, to lab practice. Highly recommended! Great illustrations and very clearly written. Its targeted to people with a serious interest in the field, definitely not for the "Genetic Science for Dummies" crowd.

3 out of 5 stars Good enough for the first course........2004-11-20

Early on it is suggested that the reason the Watson/Crick team elucidated the molecular structure of DNA first is because one of them was a biologist. Good point. Allow me to state though, the book would be greatly improved if one of the authors was an English Major. Disjointed referents and misplaced series are distracting. I think the book was written to be used with a syllabus and study guide unless the reader knows the subject so well that nudges are unecessary. Try Watson's DNA book.

5 out of 5 stars spotless.......2004-03-21

This book is the best book on the subject on the market. The subject matter is juxtaposed by easy yet informative experiments that can be carried out in a normal scholastic setting. I hear the writers are all hotties.

      Book Description

Cell Surface Receptors: A Short Course on Theory and Methods, 3rd Edition, links theoretical insights into drug-receptor interactions described in mathematical models with the experimental strategies to characterize the biological receptor of interest. The study of receptors has changed considerably over the period of the publication of the three editions of this book. The cloning of several genomes makes it unlikely that preparations of receptors now or in the future will arise from their purification as trace proteins from native tissues, but rather from a myriad of molecular approaches. Nonetheless, understanding the molecular mechanisms and ultimately the in vivo biology of these receptors means that investigators will engage in molecular, cellular and ultimate in vivo strategies. It should be of value to investigators who want to identify, characterize and understand the biology of a receptor of interest.

        5 out of 5 stars A Text on a Brand New Science.......2007-06-06

This is a book on a science that just a very few years ago did not exist. Only in fairly recent times have we begun to look at things like prebiotic chemistry (things like amino acids that are the precursors of life), extremophiles (things living at the extremes of environment like the hot vents in the deep ocean), and habitability in our solar system (especially the search for signs of life on Mars and the search for water everywhere).

This book, intended for graduate students was produced in Germany and is written by a series of experts, all European except one from JPL. Together they have produced a text, suitable for graduate student use that is as current as it is possible to be. It included current theory, a description of recent space missions and a description of planned future missions.

The CD included with the book provides for additional materials and PowerPoint slides to go with the lectures.
