WHAT THIS BOOK IS FOR
Students have generally found biology a difficult subject to understand and learn. Despite the publication of hundreds of textbooks in this field, each...
Customer Reviews:
Useful for the DAT.......2007-09-06
Bought this for DAT preparation. Found it to be very useful since that Bio on the DAT is becoming progressively more difficult. Ended up doing very well in Bio on the DAT (not just due to this book but this book did help a lot).
This made studying biology easier........2005-02-17
All in all a very good book. I used this book last two semesters for my biology classes and found it very helpful. It explained difficult concepts like what I read in my college textbook in an easier way. If you want great test preparation questions to learn from, I highly recommend getting which is also on amazon--The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Topics: Organization of Living Things & Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell and Energy Pathways, Reproduction, and Heredity, Genetics) Volume 1
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Topics: Evolution, Ecology, Kingdom Bacteria, Kingdom Protista, Kingdom Fungi, Viruses, Plant Form and Function)Volume 2
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Topics: Kingdom Animalia, Organization of the Animal Body, Animal Form and Function, Animal Reproduction, Development and Behavior)Volume 3
These four books helped me get excellent grades in my college biology classes.
A Must For Every Biology Student.......2003-03-15
For the buck, the best aid that you'll get in studying biology. Books like Campbell are good, but they cost over twice as much, and don't tell you as much. The Biology Problem Solver basically covers every bit about Biology, in a very organized fashion. It's question and answer format helps direct one's queries and thoughts. Sections that I find particularly interesting, like on ecology and invertebrates, I learned a good deal more about. Sections I find less interesting, like cellular and molecular biology, were illuminating and very easy to understand. I have particularly enjoyed the evolutionary diagrams and taxonomic lists at the end of the text. When I needed to study in undergrad, this book was invaluable, and the sample tests at the end helped to amply prepare me. Today when I have a question about Biology, I turn to this text first for in-depth coverage.
The BIology Problem Solver.......2000-04-02
A well organized review material for undergrad levelled general biology. Different from heavy volumed, too broadly covered other biology textbooks, this book focuses on important topics and guides from easy questions to challenged ones. Especially, for the biological functional aspects, this book allows lot of portion and makes it more efficient to get high scores in exams. I studied this book with Campbell's Biology (4th ed.) to prepare GRE Subject test and got over 95% score two years ago.
Highly recommendable biology book to summarize overall course works and prepare for any undergrad level-biology exams. The only drawback of this book is the relatively weak coverage of modern molecular biology section.

Customer Reviews:
Decent source of GRE-like questions.......2007-10-07
Ignore the review portion of this book, because it's so riddled with errors, omissions, and half-truths that it's likely to hurt your score. (Some blatant examples: On page 12, in the table of amino acid properties and structures, Asn and Gln have the same structure. Also, Figure 2.6 (Oxidation of an Aldose...) and Figure 2.15 (Negative Feedback Inhibition...) are exactly the same. That's when I stopped reading.)
However, it's worth buying a used copy just for the three practice tests/worked answers in the back. While these tests don't follow the standard GRE Biology format, the questions cover the material you're likely to see on the exam, and there seem to be fewer errors in this part of the book.
Useful with other similar guides.......2006-06-04
It is always a good idea to use several guides for GRE and similar tests preparation. This is one them. It becomes useful only when you study it along other test guides available in the market.
Full of egregious errors.......2006-03-28
1. Page 17. Isoleucine is wrong. The methyl group goes on the other side. It looks like you are showing L-allo-isoleucine, which does not, to my knowledge, occur in biology.
2. Page 17. Threonine is completely wrong. It has a methyl, not an ethyl group built on Serine. You show it having 5 carbons when it has 4.
3. Page 19. Histidine is wrong. The CH2 off the central carbon of the amino-carboxyl end is shown attached to the wrong carbon atom in the pent-ring. They are showing a nonbiological isomer.
4. Page 28. List of essential amino acids is wrong. List leaves out Arginine. List doesn't even agree with the count in the paragraph. The correct number is 9, with 10 for infants.
5. Page 36. Shows Pyruvate Kinase as the end step. It's the enzyme, and Pyruvate is the product.
6. Page 36. Dihydroxyacetone, not diydroxyacetane.
7. Page 36. Dihydroxyacetone phosphate, not just dihydroxyacetone.
9. Page 36. Phosphoenolpyruvate, not phosphoenalpyruvate.
That's as far as I've read in detail so far. Forgive me, but this book looks thrown together in pretty slapdash fashion. I suppose it's a bit amusing to be kept on ones toes while reviewing material by looking for errors, but I hope nobody is expecting this book to be correct.
WORST review book........2004-12-06
This was far and away the absolute worst review book I have ever seen for anything. It was full of poorly worded questions with even worse answer explanations. Tons of spelling and grammatical errors and other mistakes, like an answer being listed with the wrong letter. Is the letter or the answer correct? Who knows? These people need an editor, or need to go back to grade school. I can't believe they publish this book without spell checking it. Very frustrating to attempt to study out of this. Completely useless and a waste of valuable study time.
Horrible horrible horrible book.......2004-11-12
I don't even know where to begin with this book. Its written in granny print so just because the book looks huge and full of information its because the font is big enough for you to read from 10 feet away. Has very little information and this is evident when you start taking the "practice" exams in the back of the book. Sure they explain the answers but you wouldn't be able to find any of them in their so called "comprehensive" review. The practice tests are full of spelling, grammar, and answer errors. The tests don't even closely resemble the format of the GRE practice book. In the practice book from ETS there are approximately 40 questions based on data analysis, the tests in this study book contain 4. This book was a rip-off. Shame on the publisher for releasing such an unrefined piece of crap.

Customer Reviews:
Great reference for undergraduate microbiology.......2003-08-05
I took a microbiology class in undergraduate and found this book quite thorough and well-organized no nonsense approach. It got right to the point, without the added wording of many textbooks. I also used the Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi which is on amazon.com.
I found the last book to be quite on the mark with the type of questions to know for the test. These two books really helped alleviate many surprise questions on my microbiology exams. My friend who took microbiology last year recommended these two books. He was right, these two books helped me get an A.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful, but some careless typos.......2003-07-16
This book is of chapters on topics in high school biology. The chapters consist of a series of questions and answers. It is an interesting format, but is not sufficient to learn the topics. Think of this as a supplement to regular study or as a refresher course and you will be closer to the mark.
The images included in the book are useful, but in this day and age I would have expected at least some use of color. Color can aid understanding when used well. However, too often it is distracting because it is used for glitz. I am arguing to a judicious use to clarify the points addressed.
The one thing that disturbs me is the careless typos I have found (so how many have I NOT found?). For example: on page 2 the give the exponential notation for microns in millimeters and meters. Then they give Ångstroms in microns millimeters and meters. However, they exponents for the meters are switched (backwards) between microns and Ångstroms.
Then on page 11 the first give the formula for acetic acid as CH3COO, but then as CH3COOH (which is correct).
These might confuse a student trying to get some background in the subject.
I wrote the company for this book and asked for the errata sheet and they told me that they were unaware of errors, but would check into them and get back with me. The assured me they want to provide an accurate and dependable guide. I believe them. But right now, this one has a couple of issues that readers need to be aware of.
There is still a lot to be gained from working with this book. Just realize what it is and what its limitations are and you will be fine.
