    1 out of 5 stars Misleading Offer.......2007-09-10

Amazon offers this study guide along with the text book as a package deal. However, the text book is the 3rd edition and the study guide is the 2nd edition, rendering it pretty much useless to my daughter. Please review this closer than my daughter did! I beleive that this is an Amazon issue more so than the fault of the publisher.

2 out of 5 stars Be Cautious of Edition.......2007-09-03

I purchased this study guide to go with the Thrid Edition of the textbook, as shown with the text book. when i recieved it, i realized that it is the second edtion and is not compatable with the third edition. just be careful of what edition you need it for.

2 out of 5 stars I wonder why this was even published.......2006-09-29

This has got to be the worst solution manual I've encountered. My edition is copyrighted in 2004, and it still seems like it is a very rough draft. Although some of the solutions come out to be quite clear, for every one of those there is at least one that either solves the problem with unnecessary complexity or is downright wrong. This causes a lot of confusion and self-doubt for the student. Errors of this type and frequency are tolerable if they come from one's mentor, but when the solution manual comes from a publisher with such reknown as McGraw-Hill, I would expect it to be thoroughly edited and proofread. I would definitely not recommend this item unless they have a revised edition published. In the meantime, one would be much better off asking his or her professor or TA for the solutions, and discussing with them as necessary.

4 out of 5 stars Wanna get an A in Genetics?.......2001-01-27

Although this solution guide has a few mistakes, it helped me tremendously in Genetics. I got an A only because I had the answer and explanation to EVERY question in the textbook. It gave me a clear understanding of the basic concepts and it had plenty of diagrams. Barely anyone in my class had the solutions manual, so I felt like I had an advantage over everybody...and I found out I was right when I got my report card! :-)

This book goes with the textbook required for my Anatomy class, so it really helped a lot. This book was my Anatomy Bible for the semester and it really, really aided my studies. I highly recommend this book. I found myself labling the pictures more than coloring them, who has time to color pictures when they are trying to make a good grade in a subject as hard as this :)

    Book Description

Work more effectively and gauge your progress as you go along! This Study Guide & Problems Workbook that accompanies Snustad’s Principles of Genetics, 3 rd Edition, is written to be a hands-on workbook to help you learn and reinforce terminology and concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and challenge your mind. Learning introductory genetics requires both communication of knowledge and solution of problems. To communicate your newly acquired knowledge involves learning new terminology. Solving genetics problems requires the ability to analyze and interpret data. Genetics becomes fascinating and interesting as your confidence in understanding and using your knowledge grows.

In the rapidly advancing science of genetics, currency and accuracy are critical in any book. Snustad & Simmons’ Principles of Genetics, 3 rd Edition presents the most up-to-date developments in genetics as well as the fundamental principles. It stresses how genetics is done and provides historical and biographical insights to the people and events that have made genetics a pre-eminent science. The authors provide a clear, concise presentation of the basic principles and concepts of genetics. The text contains discussions of the methods and experiments upon which genetic principles are based, such as DNA replication. It offers topics such as the Human Genome, inherited human diseases, and the genetic basis of human behavior are discussed in the book and in special Human Genetics Sidelights. The third edition includes many updates to the genomics material.

    5 out of 5 stars Well written........2007-05-23

When I was getting a very brief introduction of genetics in my Biology book by Raven, for some reason I was just not understanding what the hell I was reading. This book is easy to grasp, very well written. I highly recommend it to anyone, also, the CD is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars it was great.......2007-03-09

this book helped me a lot. i used the book for its extra problems which they were great.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Purchase.......2005-09-01

There was no marks in the whole book, and the price was great.

5 out of 5 stars The best introductory text broadly covering the field.......2003-07-11

I would rate this as one of the best (if not the best) introductory texts in genetics. Comparing this to various other material that I've come across, Snustad and Simmons definitely exhibit superior aptitude in educational skills in this work. They have a firm grasp of what their target readers can understand and know how build up the readers' progressive comprehension while keeping the interest level high. This is the true mark of a well-constructed textbook. We all know how boring some texts can be, but I found myself always itching to read on and even go backward to review some of the concepts. The authors' use of simple language (unlike some other "introductory" texts) makes reading somewhat "light and fun" in contrast to some others who seem to not be as adept in communicating to "pre-PhD" students.

Another characteristic that makes this work stand out is it's sheer beauty. The illustrations, photographs, charts, and even the layout are absolutely gorgeous! Hey, I'm not one who judges a book by the cover, but even the cover is beautiful! The artwork is well thought out and easy to understand. Many parts of the text can be reviewed plainly by looking at the pictorial descriptions without necessitating too much re-reading of the sections.

The authors also include well-placed "sidelights" throughout the book to help the reader get a "real-life" connection to subject. And the sidelights are mostly about what we care about most...ourselves. Thus, in addition to constant reference to medical applications here and there, the sidelights help the reader appreciate what genetics is all about.

Another important aspect of this text is that it is up to date. The authors have taken into consideration the exponential advances in the field and documented it here. That is just one more plus to this already fantastic piece of work!

5 out of 5 stars i want to review this book again.......2003-01-22

i have read this book once but i am very keen to read again this book so i want to read this book and for that i want to see the review of this book.

This book has all formats of questions to go with the chapters of the Biochemistry 5th edition. In contrast to the similar book with Albert's cell biology - this one is complete with all answered and expained. For the GRE (Biochemistry, Biology and USMLE) tester the book is GOLDEN!!!! They have plenty of out favorite multichoice questions at a correct detail to where you can learn the information at a deep level to do very well on the exams. I would test myself before and after I read a chapter and found that very helpful in studying the material. This book is more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Study guide was a great aid.......2005-02-06

This study guide helped me to learn some difficult concepts like Genetics by Mendal, Biotechnology and the Genetics of Viruses and Prokaryotes. The book made learning a little more fun especially when my college biology lectures are quite boring. I do like biology but this book made it easier learning it. I was recommended the following from one of my classmates and it was very significant in helping me get very good grades. The book is called "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations," (Volume 1, Volume 2, and Volume 3) by Patrick Leonardi. These 3 volumes were like no other because they showed me the style of question to expect on my college exams.

4 out of 5 stars Book is ok, r you willing to spend the time 2 learn details?.......2004-09-05

Very similar to other biology books, there will not be a feature in this book that will make it stand-up from the other ones. In despite of that, I really recommend the website that accompanies this book. The animations are great to understand biological concepts such as PCR, operons, etc.
Everything is in great detail (too much detail for my taste)... the organization could have been better to make the students understand better. Sometimes I feel it provides so many details that the big picture is lost! I think that the cellular respiration chapter organization was very confusing (it kept going from glycolisis to kreb's cycle back and forth.) It will be somewhat hard if you want to use this book to learn biology independently.
