HOPE FOR MANY "HOPELESS" DISEASES, FROM ONE OF THE FOREMOST RESEARCHERS IN THE FIELD

When Randy McCloy, Jr., the sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster, finally walked out of the hospital to rejoin his family, it was in part due to the miracle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is based on an almost laughably simple idea: Oxygen can be used therapeutically for a wide range of conditions where tissues have been damaged by oxygen deprivation. Restore that oxygen, goes the logical thinking, and you can restore much of the lost function. It seems too good to be true, but Dr. Paul G. Harch’s research and clinical practice has shown that this noninvasive and painless treatment can help the tens of millions of Americans who suffer from a brain injury or disease, such as:

• Stroke
• Autism and other learning disabilities
• Cerebral palsy and other birth injuries
• Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and other degenerative neurological diseases
• Emergency situations requiring resuscitation, such as cardiac arrest, carbon monoxide poisoning, or near drowning

It can also improve conditions in which inflammation is the culprit, such as arthritis and asthma; promote healing in infections, burns, and skin grafts, such as diabetic foot wounds; and slow the aging process.

For the millions of Americans suffering from these seemingly “hopeless” diseases, here finally is the handbook of hope. Inspiring and informative,
The Oxygen Revolution is the definitive guide to the miracle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, from a pioneer in the field.

This book is a must read for everyone. Many people could improve their quality of life with a few treatments of oxygen.

Dr. Harch is truly the strongest advocate for people to recieve help who have had brain injury. Including individuals who have had brain injury in Iraq.

A must, must , must ready. For EVERYONE.

I have personal knowledge of individuals who have been treated and have had great sucess. I whole heartedly support everything Dr. Harch has written about.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - must read!!.......2007-08-03

Finally a book on hyperbaric oxygen therapy that is written in terms that are understandable for someone without advanced medical training! Really explains how oxygen helps heal, very informative and truly well written! Thanks to the authors!

3 out of 5 stars A Book Lacking in Practical Information.......2007-07-14

My reason for becoming interested in HBOT? A child with severe cystic acne. After trying many treatments, there was little improvement. I thought, "If HBOT can heal wounds, why not the ones on this child's face?"

I pre-ordered this book on Amazon. The book jacket draws you in. It says, "HPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY: The Groundbreaking New Treatment for..." Well, then there is a long list. The problem? The book only very briefly touches on the majority of those conditions. A lot of pages are spent covering brain injuries, either by accident, illness or birth. A good amount of pages talk about cardiac issues and diabetes.

When my child started HBOT, I wanted to be sure the staff knew what they were doing. I was hoping that the book would give me detailed, technical info. It was light on that. The doctor spent a good amount of time trying to prove the the science behind HBOT, almost desperate to prove that it is not kooky. He also devoted many pages to the political aspects of HBOT. Very boring and not helpful to one currently doing HBOT. I read the book (twice) and still had many unanswered questions.

The book is worth reading if interested in HBOT, but won't give you many specifics about the nuts and bolts of administering HBOT.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know in a clear and understandable book!! .......2007-07-10

The Oxygen Revolution ---- what a wonderful book! This is what has been needed for the general public for so long! There are many books on hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the medical profession but this is the first one I know of that speaks to the layperson.

I've seen what hyperbaric oxygen therapy can do for people who felt hopeless before giving hyperbaric therapy a try. The results have ranged from subtle to dramatic - what some call miracles and, having seen the changes, I can understand why.

The Oxygen Revolution is set up in a way that you can choose what you want to learn about. You may want to read it all or you may only be interested (at this time) in certain conditions. Dr. Harch makes it easy to do just that by the way he has set it up. Part III of The Oxygen Revolution is of extreme value to all of us. Once you've familiarized yourself with the conditions that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help, Part III tells us what we REALLY need to know: how to get HBOT when we need it, what obstacles to expect, and how to get involved to change healthcare policy. For me, this was of incredible value! I don't need to understand how hyperbaric oxygen therapy works but I do need to know how to get it when I need it.

It amazes me that so many know so little about this treatment when it has been around for quite some time. But then again, when the medical community itself has not taken the time to educate itself fully regarding hyperbaric therapy, how can we expect to know about it? Most of the time, it is through our doctors that we become familiar with therapies, treatments, procedures, etc.

I urge everyone to read the book; educate YOURSELF. If you wait until you or someone you love has an actual need for hyperbaric therapy, you will be fighting the clock to become informed. Even worse, you may never know it is an option to help with or achieve recovery.

Dr. Harch is truly an expert and leader in this field of medicine. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting him or hearing him speak, you know he is passionate about hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in particular, for neurological conditions and has spent his career fighting to make it available for everyone, everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars nearly impossible to overstate the value of either this book or properly dosed HBOT.......2007-06-27

Dr. Harch has presented us with such a wealth of information about the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and its importance in reclaiming good neurological and physical health after illness or injury that it's nearly impossible to overstate the value of either this book or properly dosed HBOT. I found the book to be so valuable, in fact, that I purchased a dozen copies to give to family and friends because I want them to be armed with the FACTS about HBOT as presented by a true expert and leader in this field of medicine before they or someone they care about needs it. Do yourself and your family a favor and educate yourself with the facts about HBOT; don't cheat yourself by letting someone who knows little to nothing about this very important therapy (even your own doctor) dissuade you from learning the truth about this legitimate medical treatment; read the book and then give the naysayer a copy or loan them yours. Yes, it's that important.

Book Description

The discovery of adult neurogenesis and of stem cells in the brain has changed our view of the mature brain. Though we now know that the adult brain can make new neurons, it normally does so only in two privileged regions, the olfactory bulb and the hippocampus. Yet stem cells, which have the potential to produce new neurons, can be found throughout the adult brain. So why does the brain not make wider use of its potential for neurogenesis? And what is the function of new neurons and of neural stem cells in areas where they occur? After all, the brain regenerates poorly and many neurological and psychiatric disorders are chronic because cell replacement has not taken place. This is the first comprehensive, integrated account of one of the most exciting areas of neuroscience. It begins with the historical background and discusses theories of adult neurogenesis and neural stem cell biology in the context of learning and memory processes as well as structural plasticity. It describes in detail neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus and olfactory system and then surveys the regulatory, functional, and comparative aspects, concluding with a chapter on the provocative hypotheses that link failing adult neurogenesis with such diseases as temporal lobe epilepsy, major depression, brain tumors, and dementias. For graduate students, investigators, and clinicians in the neurosciences, developmental biology, and stem cell research, this book is a unique resource that sifts through the evidence for exciting scientific ideas and fosters a realistic view of the therapeutic possibilities for the use of stem cells in the adult brain.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Overview of an Extremely Important Topic.......2006-12-22

Adult neurogenesis - the generation of new neurons in the adult brain - is one of the most exciting fields of inquiry in the neurosciences. Most people believed it to be impossible until quite recently. Gradually that view gave way to another: that perhaps it could occur under certain special circumstances. Now it has become an accepted part of mammalian neurobiology. While the best evidence for adult neurogenesis is in the olfactory bulb and hippocampus. There are tantalizing clues that it may also occur in other regions of the adult brain.

This is one of the first books in English to provide a comprehensive account of this fascinating field. It is written by Gerd Kempermann, who is Head of the Research Group, Neural Stem Cells, at the Max Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin-Buch in Germany, who is a recognized leader in the field.

The twelve chapters are arranged logically and systematically:
1. Introduction
2. History
3. Neural Stem Cells
4. Neuronal Development
5. Neurogenesis in Adult Olfactory System
6. Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis
7. Technical Notes
8. Neurogenic and Non-neurogenic Regions
9. Regulation
10. Function
11. Adult Neurogenesis in Different Animal Species
12. Medicine

Beginning with a brief overview and historical background, the book moves on to discuss theories of adult neurogenesis and neural stem cell biology in learning and memory as well as structural plasticity. After describing neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus and olfactory system, Professor Kempermann takes us through the current state of knowledge about the regulation and functions of neurogenesis. I particularly liked the last section where he tries - with some success - to tie failures of adult neurogenesis with some neurological diseases including temporal lobe epilepsy, major depression, some brain tumors and dementias. Some of these ideas have been published in scholarly articles over the last five years, but here the ideas are collected together and developed for the first time.

There is an important point that I could not find in the book: loss of the ability to smell, or to distinguish smells, are common early features of Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. In both there may also be pathology in the hippocampus. So the link between loss of olfaction and loss of memory may be impaired neurogenesis in the two sites.

The book is well written, despite English being a second language for the author. The illustrations are well selected and well produced.

At a time when it takes months or even a year or more to publish papers in the scientific literature, it is always difficult to try and keep books up to date. This one has plenty of citations up to the second half of 2004.

Serious students will want to use this book as a starting point and then supplement it with some reviews from the literature. (Interested readers will find regular updates on adult neurogenesis on my blogs.)

This book is an easy read and will be of interest to anyone interested in the brain and the mind, how things can go wrong, and some of the extraordinary promise of adult neurogenesis.

Highly recommended.

Convinced that drug therapies based on dopamine replacement would never fully relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, Dr. Curt Freed instead cut to the core of the matter--quite literally--and explored ways to replace damaged neurological systems caused by the disease. Healing the Brain meticulously chronicles his development and testing of a controversial surgical method, in which microscopic "noodles" of fetal brain tissue were implanted in the brains of suffering patients.

Fueled by major funding from the National Institutes of Health, Freed conducted the first double-blind fetal cell transplant study--a project involving 40 patients and spanning an unexpected five years (1994-1999). He hoped to show that such transplants would help the brain heal by repairing critical pathways that appear damaged in Parkinson's patients.

To some degree, he succeeded. Throughout this vivid account, Freed and coauthor Simon LeVay carefully outline the history of Parkinson's, treatment successes and failures, and all the players (patients, politicians, and fellow researchers) in Freed's fight against this progressively degenerative disease. While most of the text reads easily, the surgical accounts will challenge queasy stomachs; every action and reaction (by patient, doctor, and equipment) is recorded here. Most compelling, however, is Freed's insight into the disease itself and his confidence that science eventually will provide a cure. --Liane Emory Thomas

    Book Description

In May 1995, neurologist Curt Freed began one of the most dramatic experiments in the history of medicine: the attempt to treat sufferers of Parkinsons disease by grafting human stem cells into their brains. Of the forty patients who volunteered for Freeds new treatment, half underwent authentic surgery. The other half, who had received placebo surgery, felt their last hope dissolve into bitter frustration. But the hardest road lay ahead for those who had been given the highly experimental procedure. Healing the Brain captures the emotional events that unfolded in the months afterward as Freed, his researchers, and their courageous, desperate patients awaited the outcome and witnessed a moral debate unfolding across the nation over embryonic stem-cell medicine. Would the brain regenerate itself or reject the new cells? This pioneering team was willing to take perilous risks to find out.Healing the Brain is a moving, fascinating narrative about discovery and disillusionment, conflict and compassion, suffering andfor someamazing success.

    5 out of 5 stars SciLitera.com review..........2005-11-02

Back in 2001 President Bush restricted federal funding for embryonic stem cell research to an existing number of cell lines already established around the world. It was later discovered that many of these cell lines could be contaminated with mouse viruses, and others were limited in their usefulness for a variety of reasons. Does this scenario sound familiar? No! Well, it should.

In the late 1980's to early 90's America was enveloped in a similar controversial scientific frontier. Then President Bush Sr. had placed a permanent moratorium on federal funding of fetal tissue research, followed by restricting it to the use of those fetuses produced by spontaneous abortion. Scientists found that these fetuses exhibited many chromosomal abnormalities and thus, were limited in their usefulness just as the approved embryonic stem cell lines are today.

Caught in the middle of the fetal research debates of that time were scientists keen on transplanting such tissue in medically compromised patients as many years of animal research had proven well worth the effort. One such scientist was neuroscientist Curt Freed, whose attempt in alleviating the hardships experienced by Parkinson's patients through the transplantation of fetal tissue raised him to the level of a hero to many patients, but reduced him to a semi-criminal to political lobbyists; an award seeker to competing scientists; and a murderer to pro-life advocates.

In Healing the Brain: A Doctor's Controversial Quest for a Cure for Parkinson's Disease, Dr. Freed and co-author neuroscientist Simon Levay tell the story of a decade old controversial study by which only half of a number men and women suffering from Parkinson's disease were to have fetal tissue transplanted into their brain. The other group of patients undergo a sham operation. Unaware of the randomized decision of the scientists as to who receives the transplant, all patients must agonizingly wait at least one year before finding out the truth.

Healing the Brain is a lot more than just the story of a single study. The history of Parkinson's disease, the pioneering scientists, the historically colorful patients, the secret scientific research, and the behind-the-scenes mongering of the political drama are all beautifully told. If the truth surrounding today's stem cell research debate needs to be known, then Healing the Brain must be read.

Active neuroscientists survey NSCs as potential tools for central nervous system and spinal cord repair by explaining their clinically significant fundamental properties, manipulations, and potential therapeutic paradigms. Their discussion of the fundamental biology of NSCs illustrates the signaling pathways that regulate stem cell division and differentiation, and defines the methods of NSC expansion and propagation, neuromorphogenesis, the factors determining cell fate both in vitro and in situ, and the induction of self-reparative processes within the brain. They also present strategies that may lead to fruitful clinical applications in the near future. These range from the replacement of degenerated, dysfunctional, or maldeveloped cells to the provision of factors that may protect, correct, recruit, promote self-repair, or mediate the connectivity of host cells.

        5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2007-03-22

Steven A. Zecola has written a must read book that will open your eyes and hopefully instigate very important response. How many books have you read lately that can save lives? In my case, just one, and it is titled, "The Race to Cure Parkinson's Disease: How Science Will Defeat Evangelism." Let us all hope so.

This book is not just for those who are affected in some way by Parkinson's, but in truth it is for every American who cares if our government, our sciences, our economy, and our health is being directed by those who wish to control it all, control us all, through their narrow-minded evangelism. The book explains clearly what Parkinson's is, what it does, and the hopes and strides for a cure. It also describes the medical research that is underway, is possible but is being restricted, and the other avenues being taken. The book examines the evangelical onslaught against embryonic stem cell research, brings up the past and the way these same people protested against invitro fertilization - something that has become very mainstream, and most importantly, looks at the influence of evangelicals on our political society. Just who is running the government anyway? Who is controlling your mind?

So many strides towards cures have been made, but it is like the old adage of one step forward and two steps back. If the people who stand in the way would just step aside, we would be walking towards the cure of so many diseases in no time at all. Steven Zecola brings all of the pertinent information to his readers, from history to potential cures, research and studies to public opinion on evolution. Who is supposed to be in charge of what science can achieve? Why should one group of people with one group of beliefs be able to control what affects the world? It shouldn't.

The book is written in a straightforward, down to earth voice. This is not a scientific textbook; it is a manuscript about the truth of what is happening all around us. If you want to know the truth, use your voice as a world citizen, be informed, and read this book. I've never wanted to shake the hand of an author more in my life.

Great book, easy to read, lively style. Very thought provoking survey of the dilemma of making medical progress and the desires of some extremist zealots to prevent that progress. A must read for anyone who has Parkinsons, knows someone with Parkinson's, or is concerned about whether the US will be left behind in the groundbreaking stem cell research field because of parochial extremist political views.

Stroke. More than 500,000 Americans will suffer its silent attack this year. The number has epidemic proportions, but add to it the newly estimated 11 million victims each year whose strokes go undetected and America shakes its collective head and wonders, am I next? One third of those detected will die in a short period of time, over 160,000 fatalities, making stroke the number three killer in the US behind only heart disease and cancer. It leaves another 200,000 victims with permanent disability.

In spite of the numbers, brain attack strikes intimately and personally. Its shadow of death spreads quickly over living tissue in the brain, violating personality and disrupting life. This graphic contrast, huge numbers of victims versus the unique intimacy of each stroke, draws into focus the one common by-product of all attacks, fear - fear of the unknown, fear of death or livelihood lost.

The perception is evil incarnate, destroying the sanctity of one's life and home. I know, stroke left me blinded, with short-term memory wiped clean and sensory input distorted and disorienting. Only the divine touch could bring the light of hope into this darkness.

The good news - much can be done to fan this hope into a fire of restoration. The better news - remarkable advancements available today include "miracle" clot busters, surgical procedures that listen to the differences in sounds made by healthy cells and dead ones, probes that travel through the body to apply medicines directly on affected areas of the brain,, and the vision for tomorrow that moves microscopic nanotechnology out of science fiction directly into the brain to both repair and replace damaged brain cells.

Different Strokes... unwraps the fear of stroke, revealing possibilities for healing and hope - hope birthed by the insight of experience and supported by research collected from leading edge resources.
