Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-09-27
It's a great textbook for a Nutrition class, down to earth, clear explanations, lots of extras.
missing things.......2007-09-22
This item didn't come with the codes needed for nutrition classes so in the end it costed double what I would have spent at full price in the book store at my university.
good.......2007-09-17
Good condition, but it didn't come with the cd and I really needed it for the class. I bought it new from amazon, but had to return it.
Needed it for class.......2007-09-15
Book is not bad. Make sure you get the study guide that comes with it. You'll need it. If you don't get the study guide, it will cost more separately and you will have to study harder to pass the tests.
It's, well, easy to digest........2007-05-07
All jokes aside, while students may gripe about having to shell out the bucks for this textbook, it is well worth the money.
I've got an earlier edition and have used it a lot in the past. I found the later editions to be very up to date and quite useful as a reference for some of the clinical questions I encounter while working with patient education issues. In the days of picky insurance reimbursement, it's vital that all the stuff we do be based on sound clinical information showing that what we do is indeed effective.
Easy to understand and a well laid-out text with many good illustrations, there's a good reason its a standard in the field. Can also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator as a patient education tool to get people motivated to make healthy changes. After all, what good is dietary advice if nobody follows it?

Book Description
COMMUNITY NUTRITION IN ACTION, FOURTH EDITION is the perfect text to introduce students to the program planning, policies, resources, and nutrition issues specific to community nutrition, providing an understanding of creating and implementing nutrition programs from various constituencies (elderly populations, children, impoverished populations, college students, etc.). Successful practitioners in community nutrition have proven to have a mind and skill set that opens them up to new ideas and ventures. Incorporating an entrepreneurial approach, this text encourages students to learn how to take risks, try new technologies, and use fresh approaches to improving the public's nutrition and health status. The text also delivers the core material important to those who will be active in solving community nutritional and health problems, including program delivery, nutrition education, nutrition assessment, and planning nutrition interventions. From the "Case Studies" to the "Community Learning Activities," students are provided with both practical advice and applications to support active learning.

if this isnt required for a course, i would highly discourage anyone from purchasing this book. contains necessary information but is poorly written (does not flow well, authors try to use informal language) and is structured in a way that is not conducive to learning.

Customer Reviews:
Not for a typical student.......2004-03-02
This book might serve the purpose of an athlete, but may not be good for a typical student or non-student.
It has cited too many references, as if it is for a student pursuing a research program. An average undergraduate student has no time to scan through piles of references cited in this book.
It has little by way of visual aids.
Its contents do not present a straightforward methodology for an average person to deduce pros and cons of a food menu.
It has some biased opinions. For example, Figure 1.4 does not list Smoking as a possible cause for Lung Cancer.
It does not give any information about the author, apart from the author's being at the Old Dominion University.
The web link www.mhhe.com/williams stated on the back page of this book is not valid. This becomes a frustrating experience.
The book is in Paperback format, is used mainly by community-college students with limited budgets for books, and is not a monopoly book. Many better and cheaper textbooks on this subject are available from other publishers. Thus, this book's price tag of $95 is super high. Even the 7th edition's price tag of $75 seems to be high.
Excellent textbook.......2002-10-07
I highly recommended "Nutrition for Health, Fitness and Sport" to exercise science and nutrition students. It's comprehesive yet not too technical.
You may also want to order "Creatine: The Power Supplement" by Williams et al. (Human Kinetics 1999).
PS. You may also want to read my article "Protein metabolism in exercising human with special reference to protein supplementation":
Tons of information that you can understand and apply.......1999-10-13
Melvin Williams has written a great book on sports nutrition. He takes a chapter to cover every nutrient including supplementation and athletic performance in regards to that nutrient. He also covers fluid and electrolytes. He also includes weight loss, weight gain chapters that are very useful for any athlete of any level.

Book Description
TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT HEALTH takes a case study approach and is written especially for the elementary classroom teacher. The goal of this text is to help teachers become more knowledgeable about and comfortable with health topics, to be more reflective in their practice of teaching about health, and better equipped with activities for incorporating health subjects into their curriculum. Each chapter considers health from a physical, social, and emotional perspective, acknowledging the mind-body connection. The authors include topics that are relevant in children's lives using a wellness/preventive health model. In addition, each chapter provides activities that can be integrated into several disciplines found in most elementary-school curricula. This text is meant to provide elementary school classroom teachers with the incentive and knowledge base they will need to include interdisciplinary lessons about the various health content areas in their daily teaching. It recognizes that since most elementary-school programs do not have separate health education experiences for students, and since these are the primary learning years, it is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to initiate learning about health.

Customer Reviews:
SOUND ADVICE.......2007-08-21
I thoroughly enjoyed the read. The book was provacative, informative, interesting and captivating. However, not all the advice was new, some apepars to have been recycled.
But overall I was satisfied. I feel healthier already.
For those interested in improving their overall health I also recommend You: On A Det. You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management
Excellent Resource, even beyond class.......2006-11-10
First of all, I am fascinated by nutrition. It's a pretty cool thing to know how food contributes to our everyday existence. With that in mind, this book is a fantastic nutrition resource and reference. I've read a lot of extracurricular nutrition guides over the years and was under the impression I had a pretty good handle on the concepts. Nope. I felt like an amateur once I got into this book. There is so much more to learn and this book lays it out into a very "digestible" format.
Excellent Book for Nutrition Class.......2006-03-20
I actually enjoy reading this book for class. Especially since the chapters are written in an informative yet easy to understand way. On the inside cover there is a quick guide to the DV of minerals and other supplements that has come in handy outside of class. Worth the money if you are looking for a textbook!
A student's opinion.......2002-04-30
This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.
Normal and Clinical Nutrition.......2000-05-04
I found this Nutrition book to very helpful. It is very informative and easy to understand. I enjoyed this book and will most likely keep it because it can be very helpful in the future. It contains information that is very helpful
