Customer Reviews:
Five stars!.......2007-01-17
Great book with lots of pictures of species. I hoped that there would be photos for EACH species of fish but there was not. Each fish is documented though even if there is no picture for each. Many species are shown. I still have to give it 5 stars. This book is a great size too. It is not oversized. Perfect for travel.
A waste of money.......2006-10-07
This book may be of interest to an icthyolgist, but it's not much use to a fisherman. The color illustrations are very poor. They all have a washed out yellowish tint, and thus the illustrated fish tend to look all alike. The non color illustrations are better, but the book relies mostly on descriptions.
An indispensible guide to fish.......2006-03-01
I perform wildlife surveys for corporations all over the east coast. Half the weight of my equipment is Peterson Field Guides, which give me quick and easy identification of flora and fauna found and often eliminates the need for dicotomous keys and microscope work. This particular guide has helped me puzzle out a lot of small fish I come across. Well written, excellant illustrations, an important part of my library.
Far from great.......2004-09-30
This book has some of the worst fish illustrations i have ever seen. Text is far too brief. This volume tries to cover too much and does not cover anything well....
Finishing the Trilogy.......2001-10-30
It might interest the reader of this review (since your looking at the book) to know that while fresh water only represents about 1% of the available aquatic habitat on earth over half of the known species of fish live in it. I'll leave it up to you to find out why. Peterson Field Guides have a winning formula, find an expert, set them up with a good illustrator and see what comes out. This book finishes the trio that covers all of the fishes likely to be encountered by a North American fisherman, diver or naturalist. Like the Fishes of the Atlantic Coast and the Fishes of the Pacific Coast it is well organized, well written, all inclusive (of species) and as informative as space will allow. If you are curious about fishes in general or encounter fresh water fish with any kind of regularity you owe it to yourself to find out what they are. And, if you live in North America you should have this book.

Yes, for the love of children .......2005-06-03
To answer the extremely perseptive reviewer, who seemed to have gotten so much more from this book than any body else besides myself...yes, Eugene Field had a son who died. He wrote a poem about it too, and it is called "Little Boy Blue". My mother used to torture herself reading this poem..and it got so bad she just couldn't any more. This book of poetry is just wonderful. The illustrations by the renown artist Maxfield Parish are a pure delight, a treasure unto themselves.
By Eugene Field
Little Boy Blue
The little toy dog is covered with dust,
But sturdy and stanch he stands;
And the little toy soldier is red with rust,
And his musket moulds in his hands.
Time was when the little toy dog was new,
And the soldier was passing fair;
And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
Kissed them and put them there.
"Now, don't you go till I come," he said,
"And don't you make any noise!"
So, toddling off to his trundle-bed,
He dreamt of the pretty toys;
And, as he was dreaming, an angel song
Awakened our Little Boy Blue---
Oh! the years are many, the years are long,
But the little toy friends are true!
Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand,
Each in the same old place---
Awaiting the touch of a little hand,
The smile of a little face;
And they wonder, as waiting the long years through
In the dust of that little chair,
What has become of our Little Boy Blue,
Since he kissed them and put them there.
Touching and memorable........2002-03-19
Some of these poems are for children. Some are merely about children. Some are for grown ups who love children. Some are for children who have no idea how dear they are to the grown ups in their lives.
Despite having had my copy of ýPoems of Childhoodý for ten years, I know absolutely nothing about Eugene Field save what I can infer from the poems in this collection. From their recurring themes, and the order in which they appear, I can guess that Field lost a child who was very precious to him . . . was slowly healed of his grief by the love and presence of other children . . . and was given a second chance with the birth of a new baby.
There are about 15 poems that hint of that lost child and a handful that juxtapose sleep and death, making me wonder if the baby died in its sleep. Other sad poems are merely wistful about beloved children who have grown up. Thankfully, there are just as many happy poems as sad ones: cheery verses about toys, imaginary creatures, and playground games. Field also wrote several ýlullabiesý that are perfect for rocking children to sleep, whether or not they are put to music.
I donýt know any other poet who has brought such dignity to "babytalk." Toddlers in his poems are called names like Pittypat, Tippytoe, Googly-Goo and Luddy-Dud. His imaginary fairies include Amberglee, Daisybright and Pilfercurds. Moreover, Iým sure that no other collection of childrenýs poems has this many terms for "dreamland"--Blinkiwink garden, Shut-Eye town, and Hushaby street, to name a few.
Though Field could be accused of writing the same poems over and over again, most of his verses have such distinctive _personalities_ that this is not entirely true. What they _all_ have in common is his delicate touch--yes, even the ones in which his voice turns rustic and homey--that has endeared him to children and grown ups alike.
Imaginative and memorable poetry for all.......1999-09-11
This was a book from my childhood and which I have searched for many years. So happy to find it at Amazon's. Maxfield Parrish, the illustrator , with his imagination was the right choice for this book of poetry. Eugene Field's love of children and the sadness which was part of his life makes the poetry memorable.
A beloved classic.......1999-05-25
I received this book as a gift when I was about 8 or 10, and it was one of my favorite all time books. The poems are dear and the illustrations are simply magical. This volume had poems I had heard before, like "Winken, Blinken, and Nod", and many that were new to me. Over the years, when I had to memorize a poem for school, it was always one of these I chose -- "Jest 'Fore Christmas", "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat", and "the Dickey bird is singing in the Amphalula tree."
A wonderful and classic book!.......1997-11-13
One of my very favorite books of my childhood. The copy I have was given to my mother in her childhood, and she read the poems to me. This book introduced me to not only some wonderful poetry, but also to the amazing artwork of Maxfield Parrish. I'm delighted that Scribner's has reissued the book in the original design.

lacking color photos.......2002-09-26
I like most peterson books, however this one is just as knowledgable, but I bought the book hopeing to see color plates of corals, which it did not have. It had mostly color plates of starfish, sponges, sea buscuits, other animal life. I was disappointed in that, but as most of their books have, a nice description on how to identify it. It does seperate out the different types of corals, such as brain coral, then different subspecies (depressed, common, sharp hilled) but NO good pictures. It tells depth circumferance and valley, color, nice descriptions. It does have some black & white photos of coral, but it really does not help much.
It's a hard guide to write.......2001-03-10
I would feel confident recommending any of Peterson's field guides including "Coral Reefs." Many field guides simply discuss a single group of animals or plants. However Kaplan has succeeded in producing a pocket book explaining the most diverse habitats on earth. He writes from a broad knowledge base covering many topics important to coral reef watchers or biologists. Frequently he injects wit and humor into what might have been a dry text. He manages to hit on most groups of animals and uses many types of illustrations to allow the reader to identify and sort out the great number and types of animals that they will see on any coral reef within the area discussed.
I am new to this book but have used quite a few field guides in my day. Now I can't wait to visit the reefs again, armed with my new education.

Book Description
In The Octopus and the Orangutan, Eugene Linden takes readers on another unforgettable journey into the minds and hearts of animals.
The Parrot's Lament, his acclaimed previous book, featured extraordinary true stories of animal consciousness and intelligence. Linden's latest book goes beyond our everyday encounters with animals at home and in the zoo in a wide-ranging collection of real-life anecdotes that offer further compelling evidence of their higher mental capabilities and their awareness of the needs and feelings of others.
The Octopus and the Orangutan reveals extraordinary new details about animals introduced in The Parrot's Lament, and then finds intelligent behavior in surprising new places, ranging from the octopus's garden to the crow's nest. Amazing feats of stealth, deception, and larceny accompany unexpected acts of kindness and friendship. Animals show they are cagey bargainers and tough negotiators both with their human keepers and with one another. The animals themselves are our guides in this fresh look at the question of animal intelligence.
From the beloved pets we think we know to the remarkable survival skills of creatures in the wild, Eugene Linden once again shares his wonder and joy at the infinite variety of animal behavior that continues to inform, amaze, and touch us all.
Customer Reviews:
Who'd a thunk it!.......2006-11-14
Our local newspaper carried a story about octopi and their intelligence and referenced this book. The story intrigued me because I'd never read anywhere that creatures like octopi had much intelligence. Of course, I had to buy the book! And what a book it is! Well written, funny, and very enjoyable, it's also very easy to understand. I particularly like the way it shows that octopi not only display intelligence but a sense of humor as well. Orangutans, of course, are well-known for their intelligence; but I'd never dreamed just how smart these animals really are. If only I could get over their creepy looks...
Animal Intelligence.......2006-02-15
People who enjoy thinking about evolution, artificial and natural intelligence, and consciousness will want to read this book. It is a quick read worth the price.
Intriguing animal tales.......2005-01-08
What an entertaining and interesting read. I totally adored his "The Parrot's Lament" and was really excited to learn he had a new book. Eugene Linden presents some well studied proposals, with lots of information, in a clear format, and he is always careful to point out where the "scientific community" currently stands on each issue discussed. The dialogue surrounding animal intelligence is an intriguing one, and it's nice to see things from a non-scientist position...it is still well-informed, but he feels more free to use anecdotes. Still, each anecdote is presented on its own, not as supporting data, but as themselves...interesting moments that perhaps offer a glimpse not seen in many science journals. Plus, Orangutans are totally awesome.
comprehensive, entertaining, intriguing.......2004-11-09
it doesn't matter that linden's discussion on animal behaviour isn't rocket science, as behavioural studies often seem to be thought.
the beauty about linden's writings is that they come from a prespective innate in every humanbeing - simple/fundamental, unending questioning. his questions and case studies can be appreciated in simplicity. which leads to the question then, of why humans have made the study and evaluation of animal behaviour and intelligence so complicated, tenuous and subjective. does it matter if intelligence is ingrained in instinct or conjured through an anylytical mind?
"The universe is simple at its foundation."
And i believe that's where linden is with his book. throughly entertaining and easy to read, this book can be appreciated by any age and any background. any "thicker" and it'd be a scientific reference book that'd bore or overwhelm most audiences.
Several of his stories are briefs of pending behavioural/intelligence studies in universities, which is interesting to the general public because most of the results of such studies only ever turn up in scientific journals full or jargon and mathematical symbols. he also includes letters of intrigue from readers of his first book The Parrots Lament.
Read this book if you're looking to be intrigued and quirked.
Transends True Tales.......2004-08-10
I grabbed this book looking for a light, entertaining read based on the cute cover and the phrase "true tales." And it was. However, I was delighted to discover the author transcends cute-animal-story mode to craft a lively discussion for rethinking how we judge intelligence. Of particular delight, to me, was the author's obvious joyful and touching regard for animals, while at the same time maintaining judicious restraint in validating stories and their meanings. This book reminds me of Thai food: A complex dance of flavors that somehow fuse into a satisfying meal. Savor.

Book Description
This book will help developers dig a little deeper into IDEA and embrace its streamlining features which allow for more time to be spent on project design rather than code management. Without some educational investment, however, IDEA can be just another editor. That then, is the purpose of this book. To not only get you up and running quickly, but to teach you how to use IDEA's powerful software development tools to their fullest advantage. Important product features, including the debugger, source code control, and the many code generation tools, are carefully explained and accompanied by tips and tricks that will leave even experienced IDEA users with "Eureka!" moments of informed programming. Coders just graduating from NOTEPAD and Java IDE veterans alike will profit from the powerful and timesaving expertise provided in this essential programmer's resource.
IDEA is a next-generation IDE for Java, an Integrated Development Environment. As the term IDE implies, IDEA integrates or combines all of the tools needed to develop Java software into a single application and interface. In other words, IDEA is a tool that helps develop Java applications more quickly, easily, and intelligently. IDEA can help with every phase of a project, from design and development to testing and deployment. This book is based on the IntelliJ IDEA Java development environment software from JetBrains, version 5.0.
Customer Reviews:
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-01-20
Are you new to Java development or a coder graduating from Notepad to your first real IDE? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Duane K. Fields, Stephen Saunders and Eugene Belayev, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that will give you all of the information you need to become an IDEA expert.
Fields, Saunders and Belayev, begin by introducing you to IDEA by demonstrating a simple programming task from implementation to execution. Then, the authors introduce you to the editor's core features that will help you from day to day, line by line. Next, they cover the power features within the IDEA editor. The authors also cover managing your projects. They continue by covering the building and running of your project. Then, they cover the debugger in extreme detail. Next, the authors discuss Junit and IDEA's unit testing support. They also discuss the version control features of IDEA. The authors continue by covering the development of Swing applications. Then, they cover J2EE development. Next, the authors show you how to adjust things to your liking. Finally, the authors cover things like using bookmarks and macros, and extending IDEA by using plugins and external tools.
The purpose of this most excellent book is to get you up and running quickly. Perhaps more importantly, this book shows you how to use IDEA's multitude of powerful software development tools to their fullest advantage!
Great tool, useful book.......2006-04-18
I switched to IntelliJ IDEA recently and switching tools is never an easy process. This book is very interesting for both beginners and experienced developers. The former will find everything they need to learn how to use an IDE and harness its power to become more productive.
On the other hand, experienced developers will find a lot of information they are already aware of. Nevertheless, this book will prove to be useful to learn about all the features one would normally postpone the learning of because of time constraints during the day. It is also an excellent way to learn about smaller yet useful features that do not appear in the user interface. Given the time we spend in our IDE, I do think it's worth buying such a book, even to get only a few pieces of information. A few of these gems will save a lot of our time and sanity and that's the real value.
Good for the Beginner or Experienced User.......2006-04-10
IntelliJ IDEA is the first Java IDE that is set up to think like a developer. It's function is to help with the initial writing and then the refactoring of code. The central point of its development has been to assist developers to code faster and increase productivity. IntelliJ IDEA is now in its fifth generation (and as always the next generation is in the works).
The book isn't exactly a joint development between the authors and the developing vendor JetBrains, but it's close. It is an authorized production written with the cooperation, approval, and contributions of the development at JetBrains.
At a superficial level IDEA can be just another editor with a few tools to facilitate rapid typing. Beyond that, however is a multitude of powerful tools to assist development.
The book is organized in such a way that a beginner can start with how to install the program, or an experienced developer can quickly get to topics they need to understand more completely. So if you are a beginner or an advanced user, this is an excellent book and highly recommended.

WYNKEN, BLYNKEN, AND NOD takes children on a magical journey into the night sky where three fishermen sail in a wooden shoe, capturing the stars in nets of silver and gold and laughing with the moon. And when the nighttime adventure comes to an end, the wooden shoe brings the fishermen home to the real world of a child fast asleep. With soft illustrations and rhythmic rhyme, this lullaby poem will help energetic toddlers settle down and have sweet dreams as they snuggle into their beds.

Review.......2007-01-17
This was my favorite story as a child. I ordered this book for my grandchildren, they are too young to enjoy today, but will grow up with the story. The illustrations of my book of the 50's was much better, as the three characters were three babies of non gender.
Excellent!.......2007-01-12
Absolutely timeless poem with beautiful illustrations. This book is so wonderful to read at bedtime. The large glossy pictures keep my 2 year old's attention from start to finish!

Baby loves it ! ! !..........2006-04-28
My 3 month old son loves these illistrations by David McPhail. I was surprised to see his intrest in this classy, sophisticated, large hardback. My 7 year daughter old has enjoyed it for years. We also used it as an early reader until it was completely memorized. We loved it even more when her great grandmother (my Mamaw) told us how her mother used to recite this poem to her every night when she was a little girl. Interesting notes about author and poem are inside the paper cover. Great classic poem by Eugene W. Field. Take good care of this beautiful book its a keeper to hand down for generations.
Wonderful poem by Field, and lovely illustrations!.......2005-01-28
If you are familiar with Eugene Field, this is one of his best children's poems (in my opinion.) The illustrations definitely do justice to the mystical, dreamy poem. I do agree with the review, however, that the mother who is tucking in her daughter looks more like her sister than a mom! Highly recommend this book to for any little one; it's a GREAT bedtime story!

Customer Reviews:
Good.......2003-08-26
This book arrived in a timely manner and was in good condition.
Trying to Hard.......2001-08-16
Where Kaplan's "Coral Reefs" manages to take a difficult field guide topic and conquer it, "Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores" Takes an impossible task and muddles it. I don't know what the people at Peterson's Field Guides was thinking! The topic is far to broad to include in one book, and Kaplan seems to try and make it broader. He includes coral reefs and things distinctly NOT on the shore as well as including topics already in other field guides. I do NOT want to belittle Kaplan (whom I enjoy) or Peterson's (who I think makes the best mass consumption field guides available) but unless you really need it, I would stay away from this book. It does win points for itýs illustrations and Kaplanýs knowledge and writing style.
Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2001-08-07
I have taken Kaplan's field guide to seashores to Florida Keys, the Bahamas, the USVI, The BVI, Bonaire, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Curacao, and have found the book to be indispensible. No matter which island, each seashore seemed familiar, and with a little judicious reading beforehand,I understood whatever natural phenomena I saw, from snorkelling in the shallows to walking the rocky shore to crawling around the red mangrove roots. I would no sooner leave this field guide home when I go to the Carribbean or Florida, than leave home my Michelin Guide to Europe when I go there. I recommend the Field Guide to Seashores to all nature lovers and snorkelers who want to make the best of their trip to the the Caribbean or Florida.

Book Description
Today's standard textbooks treat the theoretical structure of electric and magnetic fields, but their emphasis is on electromagnetic radiation and static-electric and magnetic fields. In this book, Eugene Parker provides advanced graduate students and researchers with a much-needed complement to existing texts, one that discusses the dynamic electromagnetism of the cosmos--that is, the vast magnetic fields that are carried bodily in the swirling ionized gases of stars and galaxies and throughout intergalactic space.
Parker is arguably the world's leading authority on solar wind and the effects of magnetic fields in the heliosphere, and his originality of thought and distinctive approach to physics are very much in evidence here. Seeking to enrich discussions in standard texts and correct misconceptions about the dynamics of these large-scale fields, Parker engages readers in a series of "conversations" that are at times anecdotal and even entertaining without ever sacrificing theoretical rigor. The dynamics he describes represents the Maxwell stresses of the magnetic field working against the pressure and inertia of the bulk motion of ionized gases, characterized in terms of the magnetic field and gas velocity. Parker shows how this dynamic interaction cannot be fully expressed in terms of the electric current and electric field.
Conversations on Electric and Magnetic Fields in the Cosmos goes back to basics to explain why classical hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics are inescapable, even in the deepest reaches of space.
