Book Description
Walking along the water's edge, who among us has not stopped to admire the evocatively patterned, shaped, and multihued stones that beckon? Fun to collect and free for the taking, beach stones are objects of contemplation, beauty, and sentiment. This exquisite volume-at once a gorgeous art book and a nature guide-presents more than 200 exceptional stones from around the world and describes the fascinating natural processes that produced them.
Photographer and installation artist Josie Iselin, who uses a flatbed scanner to generate her imagery, has arranged these stones with great artistry, and nature writer Margaret Carruthers yields their secrets, revealing, for instance, that a pebble from Maine was created 400 million years ago during the birth of a great mountain range. Art lovers and beachcombing spirits everywhere will cherish this gift book.
Customer Reviews:
Beach Stones by Josie Iselin, Margaret Carruthers.......2007-06-12
This book has beautiful images and interesting text. A good book for people who love the beach. It would make a good coffee table book. I was disappointed in the lack of depth offered by the text. I was hoping for more in depth geologic information, and a greater variety of stones pictured. This is not the book for you if you want an in depth look at geologic process and the mineral composition of stones that wash up on the beach.
Great addition for any rock collection!.......2007-05-02
My Husband and I loved this book so much that we bought 3 and gave away 2 as gifts.
Great table book!.......2007-03-15
I pick it up at least once a week and remember summer vacation, walking on the beach. It is interesting, colorful, full of great pictures and fun for those that enjoy the beach. Answers all the questions that I have about beach rocks and why they look the way that they do.
beach stones.......2006-11-05
both books came around 15 pages in the center that were upside down.
i immediately called and they were replaced without question. i am very happy doing business with amazon

A Magical Book.......2006-10-28
This book will be a source of revelation to anyone interested in the beauty of the natural world. Carruthers' text illuminates, in an engaging and readable way, the geological forces responsible for creating these fascinating stones. An ideal holiday present for both children and adults.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and informative.......2007-01-09
I bought this book for Cgristmas for my boyfriend who used to be an avid surfer. The photography is gorgeous. This book was passed around all Christmas morning.
More than just eye candy..........2006-07-06
My son, who's been surfing for 20+ years, was glued to this book when I showed him my library copy. He actually went through it cover to cover at one sitting. It explains the physics of waves in a way that non-surfing types can understand and shows the shapes of waves peculiar to certain sites that he instantly recognized -> lots of things for us to talk about. So, now I have my own copy and am getting one for him. The photographs are exquisite and give me ideas for the stained glass I make. I think it's a great book to give a surfer or surfer parent and it's great to put the beauty of waves on the coffee table, too.

A Field Guide to Western Wildflowers.......2005-06-12
Personally, I think the Peterson Guides are far more helpful than the Audobon publications. As mentioned in other reviews, Peterson uses illustrations organized by color and flower configuration. The illustrations are very well done. Audobon uses photos. The idea is that you match your specimen to the photo it most closely matches and follow further identification from there. The books are complimetary and work well together; however, if you can only choose one-- get the Peterson book. Overall, I have had much better success keying out plants with Peterson and repeatedly have found the plant I am looking for overlooked in the Audobon text. The truth be known, I doubt I will ever buy a Audobon plant book again-- perhaps they are better with birds.
Pacific States Wildflowers........2001-06-22
I like the book and the topic, however the binding is is such bad shape that the book is useless in the field or for a more robust usage. Can this be fixed?
A Useful Tool.......2000-04-04
Though this title may be a little pricy, it is a must have for residents of California, Oregon, and Washington. At any rate, any family within which there is a flower collecter, should have a copy of this excellent resource. Though my family originally purchased this title because of a biology project assigned to my daughter, it has since opened up an interesting world of the natural plant life of this area and even those farther away.
Excellent Field Guide to help identify Wildflowers.......1999-07-06
I take this guide (and the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-- west) on all my field trips to identify wildflowers. Though Peterson has fewer real photos, it does have better aids to identify specific wildflowers, as it is organized by color, as well as number and types of petals. The sketches help me do a preliminary id on the wildflower.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Serene.......2007-01-09
I love this book. I keep it out on my coffee table and look at it often. Excellent photographic quality.
Nice, but.......2006-12-29
I received this as a gift and could not wait to get a quiet moment to open this book and escape. I did like the beautiful photos, however found that the author had too many of the same area and could have done so much more. The last pages contained favorite beach areas but did not have any photos which I would of liked. Will go back to the book again someday but not what I was hoping for.
Beautiful Book.......2005-05-05
This is a beautiful little book that would make a great addition to any ocean lover's collection.
My Favorite Beaches Book - Inspirational !.......2004-12-15
I am a beach lover, and as the DVD producer / cameraman of the "Waves: Virtual Vacations" Series here on Amazon.com, this book has been an inspiration to me. The spectacular shots of beaches from around the world are truly extraordinary. Having shot myself hundreds of the best beaches from California, Hawaii, Florida, the Caribbean both with stills and for the DVDs, I can easily say this book is top notch. I highly recommend it. It sits proudly on my desk. And for those who want to see and hear what some of these beaches really feel like, bring this book with you and check out our Waves DVDs here on Amazon.
A Retreat in Itself.......2003-08-21
The is a stunning book. The photos come from diverse parts of the globe and diverse coastal landscapes. At first, I was skeptical of the small-ish size. But the photos are very high quality and beautiful to look at. Maybe someday I'll get around to looking at the text?
Now and then, I pull the book off the shelf and flip through the photos -- an instant retreat to the shore. Great for anyone who loves the sea but can't be there very often.

Book Description
An astonishing voyage reveals remarkable new and unusual life forms.
The breathtaking beauty of marine life is profusely illustrated in this outstanding book. Five years in the making,
Oceanic Wilderness visits the Earth's limits to shed light on the ocean's deepest depths. From aerial views to cavernous reefs, and from mid-ocean to tropical lagoons, this book is a fascinating photographic journey to environments from around the globe, including the Caribbean, the Central, South and West Pacific, Japan, temperate and tropical Australia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea.
Oceanic Wilderness explores the oceans' creatures and plants through the eyes of one of the world's most prominent undersea photographers. The photographs provide a vibrant feast of form, color and motion. Colors are almost outrageously stunning -- but accurate. Some of the subjects are as small as 2 mm and have been captured with a microscopic lens. Some images show day views and night views of the same place to reveal surprising, unseen secrets. A number of subjects were unknown to science before Roger Steene captured them on film.
With more than 600 vivid color photographs and accurate descriptive text,
Oceanic Wilderness demystifies the planet's darkest frontier, revealing surprising secrets and exquisite beauty. This is an ideal book for naturalists, travelers and divers -- and anyone else with a passion for marine conservation and photography.
Highlights:
- Features subjects never before photographed
- Explores the Caribbean Sea, the Central, South and West Pacific, Japan, temperate and tropical Australia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea

- Provides views of oceanic worlds from above
- Presents life in and around tropical islands and deep reefs
- Reveals marine life in lagoons and tide pools, and among kelp and coral

Book Description
In pursuit of their animal subjects, artists Olly & Suzi start by situating themselves in the subject's natural habitat--the wild. They approach as closely as possible and, working in tandem, quickly capture their prey on paper, using the day's particular combination of paints, brushes, burnt sticks, natural pigments, even blood, and then offer up the finished portrait to be paw-printed, tooth-bitten, or otherwise marked by the animal for authentication. Their collaborators have included anacondas, crocodiles, polar bears, and great white sharks. Of course, occasionally a leopard decides to rip apart its own image, or a rhino devours the canvas whole. While their art yields paintings of extraordinary beauty and power, Olly & Suzi consider it performance-based and site-specific: sometimes the only thing they come away with from an expedition is their lives.
Spare, vibrant, and lyrical, the works that have survived Olly & Suzi's 15 years of adventures in such remote locales as Siberia, the North Pole, and the Galapagos Islands fill the pages of this equally boundary-defying book. Accompanied by dazzling photographs that document the pair's unique process, these paintings take the reader on a dynamic journey to the world's remaining, though endangered, wild places.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, special... they are the BEST !.......2004-07-24
Honestly, i never heard about Olly&Suzi when my close friend, Bryan, offered me this book one year ago after reading an article in a brit mag...
til now i still can't take my eyes out of their work... the poetry, the beauty, the nature wild, theirs ideas and thoughts, the colors, the research, the creativity... theirs intelligence (artist's intellligence).. their sensibilities... those british artists get it ALL... TO DISCOVER immediatly... once you open this book, it is an absolute NECESSITY to keep on look to it... i loooooooooove them !
Olly and Suzi: Awesome, Display, Of, Jenius!.......2004-04-20
thank goodness we don't all listen to reviews like that below.... this book is anything BUT pretentious twaddle!
how can i describe it?.... it gives you so much - amazing photography, beautiful art, fascinating stories - and leaves you feeling positively up-lifted, excited by the world we live in and inspired to travel and take an interest in activities such as conservation.
olly and suzi are true artists, clearly passionate about the subject of their work. the work itself displays raw talent, honesty and beauty. couple this with the other wonderful elements of this book and you have a truly awesome document that i defy anyone not to appreciate.
pretentious twaddle.......2004-03-12
art is always subjective and individual views such as my own should only be taken in this context but these two pair of chancers really seem to take the biscuit.
forget your damien hursts this self promoting pair and their various hangers-on just seem to continue to exist in the ongoing absence of any real interest in their work.
for completists/students only i would suggest this book, a collection of childike daubings seems to me like emptiness masquarading as 'art' by a couple of pretty talentless pretentious students with travelust and a penchant for the goodlife beyond their ability to pay for it. i might well be wrong and they may be wonderful people.
to me stuff like this remains aesthetically empty unless associated with some spurious idea of post modernism (yet another art world scam to get your money). painting wise its just rot.
unless you're some kind of USA based tree hugger with a liking for wearing t-shirts emblazoned with lone wolves (sic) and grizzly bears then this humble reader strongly suggests you keep your money in your pocket!
remember when painters used to able to actually paint as opposed to come up with a 'big concept'? or at least remember when the 'big concept' was actually heartfelt and not some careerist blag on a way to climb the art worlds social ladder and live the life you really have no ability to pay for thru through the sale of your work and demand for it from the public?
or maybe, i'm just too much of an old cynic..
The Ultimate Coffee Table Book.......2003-06-10
I have been a fan of Olly and Suzi's work for several years since their exhibit at the Natural History Museum in London. This book provides a tremendous story to accompany the amazing art and photos. Ideal for adventurers, art enthusiasts, and animal lovers. Highly Recommended!
i want to hang out with olly and suzi.......2003-06-04
Simply put, this is an extraordinary book. A friend gave it to me and I do not know whether it is more a art, travel, nature, wilderness adventure, or photography book, because it defies classification, but in any event, it is a serious page-turner. I dont know where to start...the images from all over the coolest and most exotic places on earth, of some of the funkiest and loveliest paintings ever, are captivating. These guys live most children's dreams, they travel around, hang out with rare species of animals (some dangerous, some not), paint them and then get the animals to interact with the art - so they are at one with nature, creating stunning images and at the same time living at one with nature. A perfect gift for kids, visual artists, performance artists, photographers, or people with a sense of adventure or wanderlust.

When David Doubilet was a child, he photographed swimmers in the waters off of New Jersey. Water Light Time is a collection of images that capture the underwater magnificence that seized the photographer's imagination in childhood and spurred a lifelong fascination. Underwater plant life floating like snakes, bright blue water filled with schools of silver fish, a diver immersed in a throng of bubbling yellow jellyfish, a close-up of pink and white sea anemones looking all the world like a floating bouquet of flowers--each image in this book is exquisitely photographed with preternaturally clear colors, full of detail and depth. Some images toy with perspective, creating surreal tableaux as a crustacean leg pokes out of the yellow-green water to appear almost as large as a nearby tree.
With a career that started as a National Geographic photographer in 1972, Doubilet has a lifetime of experience from which to make such a marvelous meditation on this otherworld that is vaguely familiar to most readers only through pictures and visits to aquariums. Doubilet captures what must surely be his own awe at the uniqueness of being a human in this nonhuman environment, and the reader can marvel at both the lushness of life in the water and at the beauty of the photographs themselves, which dominate almost all of the book's 240 pages. --Jennifer Cohen

Absolutely amazing!.......2007-03-22
Not only the pictures are artistically and beautifully photographed, but one cannot not wonder how Mr. Doubilet could be right there at the moment, with the right lights and the right angles to capture such incredible photos. If you appreciate nature's beauty and photography, this book is a must.
Incredible photography!.......2007-02-03
I couldn't imagine a more beautiful photography book! If you are fascinated with the underwater world, this is for you! The quality of the photographs are unmatched. Looking through the book is a magical experience.
beauty out of the water.......2007-01-17
great gift for ocean lovers. amazing photography. an enjoyable book for those that love the water, but don't want to get wet.
Absolutely breathtaking!.......2007-01-11
David Doubilet's photographs are simply beautiful...this book really blew me away. I could literally stare at the images for hours as they are that captivating. It's almost as if you're diving with Mr. Doubilet and seeing these creatures up close. The way he uses two separate views (i.e. shooting the ray underwater while also shooting the sky above the water) is amazing. While exhibiting his photography prowess, Mr. Doubilet also shows the viewer the strong connection of all the earth's elements. He also seems to have a strong relationship with the ocean life- the stunning photo of the seal peeping over the bed of kelp truly captures the seal's beauty without compromising its playful nature.
This book is a treasure!
Excellent pictures, nice commentary.......2006-07-31
Great underwater photographs. I wish there was a book with Doubilet's pictures taken in the Okavango Delta...

Not impressed with the photography.......2007-08-08
This book reminded me of a National Geographic magazine, just not as good. For the size of the book I figured it would be filled with amazing stunning colorful original shots. It is not. It is a lot of aerial shots. There are some good images but the book is not worth buying for me at least.
pretty impresive for $11.......2007-07-15
this is a wonderful book for the price , for $11 it wont dissapoint, at near list of $55 it might dissapoint a little bit
Book Description
Celebrated landscape architect Jean Mus designs gardens that reflect his extraordinary abilities as both an artist and a horticulturalist. Mus's lavish installations display a rich spectrum of Mediterranean influences, incorporating pottery, slate walkways, sleek water channels, and Mediterranean flora. In Mediterranean Gardens, Mus invites the reader to explore twenty of the exclusive gardens that have made him famous. Dane McDowell guides us across the artist's verdant landscapes throughout southern France and into Greece and Portugal. She divulges the stories behind Mus's gardens and peppers the text with technical and reflective anecdotes from the designer himself. The sublime photographs of Vincent Motte provide inspiration to gardeners, Mediterranean buffs, and landscape designers alike.
