Customer Reviews:
First half of book is really good...then it fails miserably.......2007-04-01
I had the fabulous experience of using this book at the college of where one of the professors used to teach so it was shoved down my throat how great this book is for two semesters. I have to say it's not too bad halfway through, it uses plenty of interesting diagrams to simplify the material or even add more information that couldn't be put in the text, it has interesting everyday examples of how the concepts fit in, or even easy experiments. One could reasonably get through the first half of the book (up to Chapter 9) without the CD and have a basic understanding of chemistry. The rest of the book goes straight downhill with explanations however. It tends to skip over details. You also need an EXTENSIVE mathematical background to understand even any remote concept past chapter 9, and in the examples showing how to do many of the formulas, steps are skipped leaving you to wonder what is going on. The diagrams get much more involved with way too much detail, or lacking explanation of the detail. The CD is really where the entire package fails though, as the questions for the chapters often do not relate at all, are set up to trick the student because the tiniest detail will be so complex, and when you do get a question wrong, it does not really help you to understand where to look for help or how to fix the problem you made. Most of the problems you're likely to make on the questions are extremely complex mathematical errors. Basically you have to make sure you have a masters in mathematics to even understand some of the examples in the CD, and there's no way to get through it without the help of an actual human being. The book seriously needs a much better editor, there's no need to skip over so many details on a subject that is often very difficult to so many students, especially those lacking a strong math background which is not always required for entry level chemistry.
Great book.......2007-02-24
To tell you frankly I am very poor in Chemistry. This book has been a great help in understanding facts. The book is wonderfully illustrated with examples and sample problems. This is a better or easier reading book than say Brady Senese (which is also a very good book btw)
students and penny-pinchers.......2007-01-26
the international paperback version of this book is exactly the same as the hardback version and it's considerably less expensive. it comes with the CD-ROM but does NOT provide OWL or online access codes to the web based program- but you can purchase those separately at the thomas learning website... and you'd still be saving money.
as for the book, I've only been using it 3 weeks but I like it so far. (much better than chemistry: structure and dynamics which I used last term- blah!). while not for complete beginners the explanations and sample problems are well written and there are lots of homework questions to make sure you really understand the material. (odd answers are in the back of the book). the real selling point for me is that all the pictures are in color (very helpful if you're a visual learner).
Quite possibly the greatest Chemistry text out there........2006-12-22
Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity: 6th Edition is by far the best introductory chemistry textbook out there. I have the pleasure of using this text in my AP Chemistry class, and I'm yet to be disappointed once. Every page of every chapter is well written, explained with a good amount of detail, and filled with charts and graphs which further the reader's understanding of the topics. I've gotten so used to this book that when I open up other chemistry books, I'm almost disgusted at how poorly written they are.
Sure, at a cost of $160, its not exactly cheap. I believe that this is a small price to pay for the contents of this book. Even though I got a free copy to use for the year, I plan on buying a copy and taking this to school with me next year.
Strongly recommended for anybody interested in Chemistry.
Excellent Book.......2006-12-12
I am taking first year inorganic chemistry, not because it is needed for any program, but because I enjoy the subject. Also, I have not seen the other chem texts for comparison. Having said that, I found this book extremely well written, and well coordinated with the solutions manual. It is dense, so you can't afford to miss a single sentence. I often wished the solutions manual could go into more detail when I needed remedial assistance.

Customer Reviews:
Not incredibly helpful........2007-10-01
Plenty of the problems in this solutions manual have significant figure errors. A few times they forget to actually write in the answer after showing the work they did. I find that some of the problems (especially with equations that need to be algebraically manipulated) are solved in strange ways that are hard to follow. For example, instead of taking the original equation and solving for the desired variable, it substitutes all of the known information and then does the algebra. I find that if I actually try to solve a problem this way, I will almost always make an error. Sometimes the manual just skips steps, or leaves out explanations when it shouldn't.
On the bright side, when I am doing the study problems at the end of a chapter, instead of having to save my place in the book and check my answers in the back, I can leave the page open and check my answers in the solutions manual. Hardly worth the fifty bucks.
I've had better .......2007-09-29
Those of you who have taken Chemistry know that it's not the easiest class in the world. That is why I went online and bought this solution manual. However, I wouldn't waste my freakin money on it if I were you. It doesnt show crap in it. In fact, the back of my book shows more of a solution than this thing does. I like solution manuals that explain everything, this one assumes you already know what you are doing, which contradicts the purpose of the damn thing.
Excellent condition and good text.......2007-01-06
I am really happy with this book. It helped me with hard problems.

Worth it's weight in Au.......2007-09-19
I bought this text book for my son at Florida and all I can say is "man, it's heavy!" (as Pb) I bot it used before class started and paid a pretty fair price, especially compared to the cost of new. Parents/Students: Order your books from Amazon or affiliates before school starts and you'll save a fortune, plus you avoid the Student Bookstore hassel. The book was in very good shape, as described, and the seller delivered in just a couple days right to the dorm. As for the content, the author certainly seems to know A LOT more about chemistry than I do, so if you're into that sort of thing, you might find this interesting. If you're not a chemistry type, the book will hold most any door open, and is thick enough to boost a youngster at the table. Study hard!
Great college book!.......2007-07-06
Chemistry turned very easy to understand for me thanks to this book. Almost every chapter is well explained and has a whole bunch of solved examples and tons of exercises for the student. I was amazed by the great pictures the book offers for a better visual understanding. Unfortunately, I do not why another book will be used for next semester at my school, but hope next time, they use another great work by Kotz et al =)

good manual.......2000-08-16
I never had interest in chemistry (and probably never will) but I found this book easier than most. By easier I do not mean that there is not much content, but the way of writing and the explainations are given in simple terms, making it better than most books. Many concepts which were greek to me were easily understood, and the excersises were designed to make a person think and apply knowledge. It is a good book, but then again, unless you're interested in chemistry this book won't magically pour knowledge of chemistry into your head. All this does is make you learn chem the way it should be learned, by understanding and applying knowledge. Among most of the chem books i've come across I'd rate this as one of the best. This manual is useful for lab exercises, if you're a student. After using this book a lot of lab excersises were very very easy to me, and I understood concepts more than by listening to the professor.

Book Description
This best-selling chemistry text integrates chemical principles and applications with generous amounts of descriptive chemistry. A uniquely beautiful and dynamic art program emphasizes the close relationship between macroscopic observations of chemical and physical changes, the symbols we use to describe them, and the way we view those changes at the atomic and molecular level.

Good high school chem book.......2007-07-26
This was a good book to learn chem from for a high school chem class OR use as a supplement to one's high school AP chemistry class. Good clear explanations. In re one of the previous reviewers comments, I do agree that some answers were wrong. The problems given in the book were of average difficulty, perfect for an average chem student.
review from AP chem student.......2007-03-27
Overall, I didn't especially like this book. I used it in high school AP chemistry for an entire year.
First of all, the hardcover edition is very heavy and generally cumbersome to use, and i'd definately recommend buying the paperback edition. The book attempts to cover a huge amount of material, which is overwhelming, and it is too much to cover in the course of one academic year.
The content of this book was of average quality, but at times confusing. Many of the explanations provided seem to require a background in chemistry--not a good thing if this is the first chem course you have ever taken. But if you've studied chmistry previously, this book should be fine, provided that you understand how to do basic calculations using conversion factors and mole ratios.
I was sometimes confused by the more complicated topics. In some cases, the explanations of the topics were fine, but the examples problems went above and beyond the basics, which was confusing. Other times, the explanations were unclear but the examples were fine. Generally, I was able to understand the concept in the end, but at times it was frustrating.
The thing that bothered me the most about this book was that some of the most basic formulas were not explicitly stated. The book would show you how to derive the formulas and do a number of complicated calculations, but the formulas themselves are not always right there, in bold print. I'd be sitting there trying to do my homework, and i'd have to go searching back through the text to find the formulas, which was annoying. I'd recommend writing the formulas out seperatly, of using one of those quick-study guide things that fits into a 3-ring binder.
Also, beware, some of the answers in the back of the book are incorrect and/or don't match what's in the solutions manual.
As good as it can be.......2002-06-27
This is not a bad text chem book compare to Akin Matter and changes Chem text book. I have used both text books, and I have just completed Chemistry series courses. I have gone through from page 1 to the very last page 1125. Koz is much better at drawing VSEPR orbital than Akin. Chapter 11 on organic is not bad, but very unorganized. But, quite frankly most text books are so bad at explaining things. Them authors are just dancing around the topic without telling you the $1000 keyword that student needs so desperately. Yeah, you high school teachers go ahead and flame me. Let me just test you, given a weak base and titrate with strong acid dropwise. Can you do it ? Find pH in case you don't understand. Solve Zn/Zn2+ (.2M) // AgS, S anion(.2M) system. Can you do it? Solve for E? You should get atleast %90 correct repeatability with other similar problems because these kind of problems have 50/50 chance of getting correct. Anyway, before you flame me, write your answers with page number up here at amazon so other can people can benefit or judge how stupid you are. (Not to brag but I did very well (Not below B+) in Chem. not depend so much on Text Book, mostly got info. from asking people on the net.)

Quality writing, seamless technology integration, and a rich ancillary package are hallmarks of John C. Kotz and Paul M. Treichel, Jr.'s CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY. Now thoroughly revised and enhanced, the fifth edition of this best-selling text will bring students to a new level of understanding and appreciation for chemistry's vital role in their lives. By emphasizing the close interrelationship of the macroscopic, symbolic, and particulate levels of chemistry, Kotz and Treichel provide an important organizing principle that carries throughout the book. The text's significantly revised art program reveals these three levels in engaging detail. This new art program is fully integrated with CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY'S unparalleled CD-ROM, GENERAL CHEMISTRY INTERACTIVE, VERSION 3.0. WORST BOOK EVER!.......2006-01-17
This book is so bad! This book jumps around, doesnt explain thoroughly and has errors! If the teacher is teaching with this book then the teacher will be bad too. If you have a course with a teacher who teaches with this book, take an e permit to take chem somewhere else! I know what im talking about!!! Check out ratemyprofessors.com to see how people rated professors who used this book. Horrible!
Not a good textbook, makes chemsitry harder than need be..........2005-11-01
My suggestion: Get Chemistry, The Central Science textbook (available here on amazon), as an adjunct to this text, if you must have this text for your class. The Central Science text is actually in English and will help you understand it.
It is poorly written, full of typographical errors which can further confuse the already flustered student (not only for words, but many formulas, examples, and problems have errors as well). For about 160 dollars, you'd think the publisher would be able to afford an Editor!!! It's audience isn't college freshmen, it seems that the author's assume you've got your Master's degree in Chemistry... the book is full of chemical jargon and assumption of knowledge that a first semester Chemistry student has no way of grasping.
I took Freshman College Chemistry twice... I had a difficult teacher and a more difficult text. I ended up getting Chemistry for Dummies, the Standard Deviants 3 VHS Chemistry set, and the most helpful and beneficial, the teaching company's High School Chemistry VHS set (which is helping me even in organic), all available here on amazon.
Not even my current Organic Chemistry textbook is as difficult to read as is this text. You almost can't get by in class using this particular textbook without suppliments.
It does come with CD-Roms, but they also are full of jargon and assumtions that you've understood everything that they're telling you.
If you can, don't buy this book, or take another class with a different author or textbook. Even taking another class at another college or nearby community college would be worth not having a class that uses this textbook (which is what I did for Chemistry II, and the different book, "chemisty, the central science" was actually easy to read and understand)... an A the first time around is what I got and what happens when you can actually understand what you're reading!
bb
Exceptional.......2005-09-05
I recieved my book within a week, it was literally in mint condition, and I bought it for a great price. This was by far the best seller I have ever had since using Amazon and I have been bying text books for 4 semesters now, not to mention many other itmes. I still can't believe that the book said it was used, but it definately was in exceptional condition!
Get 4th edition if you can.......2004-09-13
4th edition of this book was quite superior. Well written and coherent. Upon changing the edition from 4th to 5th, editors, it appears, have torn out pieces of text in a random manner. The only new material added were some new color pictures (yeah, let's use as much graphics and color as possible, that'll drive up the price of the book). The purpose of such "editing" escapes me; the result is an inconsequent and disjointed text which is very hard to digest.
If you're getting this book for a class, see if you can use the 4th edition. If you are getting it for your personal reading, definitely get the 4th edition. Chemistry doesn't change that much.
Fantastic Book.......2004-05-30
I have to differ from earlier negative reviews: this is a great book. It is clearly written, lavishly illustrated, and the CD is outstanding. The authors have put great effort into this book. They take it upon themselves to lead the student in many ways that make learning more effective. They cross-reference topics from earlier chapters that I as the student may have forgotten. They illustrate topics to make them tangible. They provide both theoretical and practical context for most topics. They created an exhaustive CD with great tools and movies and aids to learning. I may have a different perspective than some because I am a returning student and am familiar with some of the material. But unlike other textbooks I am also reviewing, this one feels complete instead of feeling that the author didn't quite complete a topic and expects me to go hunting for answers. I (obviously) recommend this book heartily, and I am not connected with any of the authors!

Book Description
Chemical Kinetics bridges the gap between beginner and specialist with a path that leads the reader from the phenomenological approach to the rates of chemical reactions to the state-of-the-art calculation of the rate constants of the most prevalent reactions: atom transfers, catalysis, proton transfers, substitution reactions, energy transfers and electron transfers. For the beginner provides the basics: the simplest concepts, the fundamental experiments, and the underlying theories. For the specialist shows where sophisticated experimental and theoretical methods combine to offer a panorama of time-dependent molecular phenomena connected by a new rational.
Chemical Kinetics goes far beyond the qualitative description: with the guidance of theory, the path becomes a reaction path that can actually be inspected and calculated. But Chemical Kinetics is more about structure and reactivity than numbers and calculations. A great emphasis in the clarity of the concepts is achieved by illustrating all the theories and mechanisms with recent examples, some of them described with sufficient detail and simplicity to be used in general chemistry and lab courses.
* Looking at atoms and molecules, and how molecular structures change with time.
* Providing practical examples and detailed theoretical calculations
* Of special interest to Industrial Chemistry and Biochemistry
