school required purchase.......2007-08-23
The high school required the purchase of this book for the AP Chemistry class. I was pleased it was so easily accessible and used copies were available. The school year just began, I am sure it must be a good source of help for the students since the teacher is requiring it at the beginning of the year.
Great review book.......2007-07-27
This book covers almost all topics you'll see on the actual test. And it really helps if you need an overall review just before the test.
However, it didn't cover much on the Organic and Nuclear chemistry. Well, even though these two topics are not emphasized(about 5 MC), you really need to go over them if you really want a 5 on the test.
And, do every question(including the free response questions).
Be confident, the actual test will be easier than you have thought.
cracking the ap chemistry exam.......2007-06-12
The book was written in - in PEN! All the answers ! It made for a waste of time and money to get a book you could not use as a study tool.
A Very Concise Review Book.......2007-05-23
This review book has been really helpful in preparaing me for the AP Chem exam. Unlike other review books, this book does not include a whole lot of review information. This is good because when you review, too much conceptual reviews can actually hinder the review process, something that Baron review books tend to do very much. In addition, the problems on the back of every section are very useful, although it's actually a little harder than the actual problems on the exam. Overall, this book has been very helpful.
AP Chemistry .......2007-05-14
This book is an excellent review source for the AP Chemistry exam. I was very satisfied with the material. The only problem noted was that the free response section of the review is not in the current format of the test. The material, however, is relevant. Would highly recommend this book!
Book Description

Absolutely phenomenal.......2007-07-24
I had a terrible teacher for AP Chemistry, and about a month before the AP exam, I bought this book. I read it through the whole way, did all the practice questions, and got a 5! It was all the book, too; the next highest grade in the class was a 3.
This book will teach you everything you need to know for the exam. My only complaint was that I didn't get it any earlier -- I wish I could have used it to study for in-class tests as well :)
the most thorough AP chemistry book i have seen.......2007-01-24
if you want to get a 5, and have over a month to study (like me), you *need* this book. it's definitely longer than other books, so you'll have more to study from. however, if you're hoping for just a 3 or 4, and don't have too much time, you'll probably be ok with another book.
Good preparation for AP Chemistry.......2007-01-13
It's probably the best resource out there for preparation for the Advanced Placement Chemistry exam. It tells you what to expect, gives a study schedule, gives you practice exams with explanations, and is very up-to-date. It's not a must-have though, because there are plenty of other good resources out there.
A must buy!.......2006-12-27
The AP Chemistry exam is certainly one of the hardest. However, my high school teacher taught like a college professor, which made the exam easy as child's play. The AP class was offered during first semester in my school, and I had to take the exam at the end of the year...like three months later. The Barron's book helped me tremendously in review and practice. I flipped through the book and read all the material I remembered my teacher lecturing about. And then, I skipped the contents that I know won't be on the test. Furthermore, I scored a 5 and I accidentally skipped a portion on the free response. I found out about that like one minute before time was called. But I still walked out of the testing room confident with this book.
DEFINITELY YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS.......2006-07-04
This book is GREAT for its content; it covers all the topics in specific detail, though some are clearly superfluous. It really helped me on the experimental parts (i.e. common colors or smells of chemicals, etc). I did not take any of the practice tests in this book because I knew and heard that they were insanely hard and depressing. Instead, I took the practice tests out of the Princeton Review AP Chemistry and scored a 5 on both of them. I recently just received my score and I got a 5! This book is a must for those who want a thorough review on AP Chemistry.

Only helpful in certain areas.......2005-08-27
I got a 3 on the exam with a teacher and a chem program at school which had never had anyone even attempt the AP test. However, this book alone will not get you a 2. This book is excellent when it comes to teaching you how to do the math but horrible when teaching you concepts. The princton review is excellent at teaching you concepts, but horrible at teaching you how to do the math. So my suggestion is you do them together and with your college Chem book. I pretty much taught myself everything and am proudly probably the first student at my school to pass the Chem AP test. I've also been told Barron's is quite good so you could try that as well. So only accompanying princton review could this book be helpful, labs don't really help much unless you actually do them. Don't be mistaken, this book won't tell you how to do the lab specifically, only skims through them.
horrible resource.......2005-02-27
it has an awesome lab review section, but the review was nonexistant. I did not like how the book was put together or how it had a key terms section which did not explain the key terms. I am surprised that Cliffs would put out a book of this caliber. It's like the review was an afterthought compared to the lab section.
Poor Option.......2004-08-18
Don't use this book. The lab guy gives the wrong impression. First off, the lab questions on the AP test are the ones you need to least worry about, usually very straighforward since you can't do a lab in a written test. In terms of the rest of the stuff in the Cliffs book, we used some of it in class and it the book is so riddled with mistakes that we stopped using it. USE PRINCETON REVIEW. Awesome book, straightforward, clear, won't put you to sleep.
5 stars for getting me a 5!.......2004-07-17
Wow. This book is excellent. I had a chemistry teacher who refused to do any lab with us the entire year. We didn't even have a lab room. It was a normal classroom with no sinks or anything. I'm really good at chemistry, but I was really worried about getting a 4 because I had absolutely no lab experience. But, I read part of this book like a week before the AP test and then I totally crammed the labs in the day before the test. Now cramming doesn't normally work for me, but it worked this time! It was like a miracle. I knew every lab question. If it wasn't for this book, there is no way I could have gotten a 5. If you have good lab experience, this book may be of no help to you. But if you haven't done a lab at all in your chemistry class, you want a 5 on the AP test, and you don't want to deal with all the hard to find chemicals and perform every lab at home, then YOU HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK! It will get you a 5 like me. I also recommend Princeton Review AP Chemistry.
Remotely helpful? I think not........2004-03-05
I bought this book to help me, as I'm not the best in the chemistry department. If you are in a similar situation, do not buy this book. It has an extremely minimal amount of actual study material, and even skips over some topics completely, even after listing them in the 'key terms' section at the front of the chapter. Shouldn't a study book actually define the key term rather than leave you to look it up and study it from other sources? You might buy it thinking it looks kind of good, but then the week before a big intermolecular forces test, find out that it doesn't mention so much as a sentence on the topic.

Chemistry Solutions manual.......2007-08-25
Pretty helpful to have for the course. It tends to leave out answers to the simplest questions from the beginning of the problems in each chapter but otherwise is good. For me, I could use a little more step by step answers for some of the solutions but it may may be just fine for others. Overall, I would recommend having this manual for the course.

SO MANY ERRORS! 0 stars!!!.......2007-05-03
Whoever wrote this book should be fired. First of all, the speed of light is NOT 3.0 x 10^18 m/s. WOW, there are COUNTLESS ERRORS on almost every page. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Kaplan also did not update their practice AP format; they should have known that the AP format changed.
Lots of Errors.......2007-04-11
I at first admired this AP Prep book for its concise format and practice problems, but as I made my way through the book more and more ERRORS kept showing up. I understand that humans are apt to err but the amount of errors and the seriousness of these faults are not permitable for an AP Prep book. For example the book incorrectly wrote the Nerst Equation, which is important part of Electrochemistry. The practice questions and review exams are helpful, but I would not recommend this book for those of who are reviewing due to errors. Try The Princeton Review, it is very much superior for review .
Not awesome.......2007-04-07
Not an AP chem student, I am trying to use this book to get a general review of chemistry and it is not proving all that helpful. A whole lot of knowledge is assumed, and while I have taken chemistry several times before, I still want to be reminded of the definitions of words that are in bold (and thus evidently important to know). The explanations are not very clear, and practice problems pop up without any previous explanation of the material. Were I currently immersed in AP chem and cruising along, this book would probably be fine, but if you're trying to use it as a supplement to the class, you may want to check out another book.
Not updated for 2007 test format.......2007-03-22
We haven't really had the book long enough to have an opinion of the review content. Buyers should be aware that despite the 2007 label, the practice tests have not been updated to reflect the format of the 2007 test.

Great book, underrated series.......2004-03-22
To bluefox2003:
A lot of students, myself included, find the Barron's a bit too technical and dry. I went to the bookstore and saw 5 Steps to a 5, not expecting much, but it turned out to be, for me at least, the most clear, concise, interesting, yet still complete and full review of AP Chem. It reads like a friend explaining the ideas to you. Not a dumb friend, either, but one who is interested in AP Chem, talking to someone who is interested in AP Chem. If you think that the problems are too easy, it might be because they are, in fact, supposed to be that easy when they are explained well. Just my two cents.
stop lying..........2004-02-01
It's useless... I bought one last month and started to use it for preparing the AP Exam... but it's useless... the tricks are "common sense" and the practice problems are too easy... if you really wanna buy a good review book... use Barron or Princeton Review...
This book is great and my high school students love it........2004-01-28
The type in the book is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. A couple of my students started using it last week and they say it explains things better than their textbook does.

Customer Reviews:
This book has everything you need for the AP Chemistry test........2007-07-07
Quite simply, there is no other AP review book that will prepare you for the AP Chemistry test as well as Master AP Chemistry, by Peterson's.
While this book may be larger than the other study books (especially Princeton Review) it's because little is left out. For some, this book may be too excessive and detailed, but with colleges turning to accepting 5's as the only way to CLEAR college courses, this is the book to buy.
I'm not saying this is the best book without a reason, I actually have/borrowed all the others books for AP Chem that are sold at my local Barnes & Noble. This includes: Princeton, 5 Steps to a 5, Cliffnotes, and Barron's. I found the other books to have annoying commentary (entirely unnecessary), to be TOO shallow, or to have an annoying layout.
Master AP Chemistry has every bit of information needed: to survive the test (3) through the "Summing it Up" section at the end of every chapter; to show proficiency (4) through the "Summing it Up," Bolded Words, and practice tests at the END of the Entire book; and to show mastery (5)through everything above, the in-depth information in every chapter, and the tests at the end of each chapter.
I happened to get a 5 on the AP Chem test, and that score has saved me from taking general chemistry as a Freshman in college with about, 400-500 other students (in each lecture hall.) I have no doubt that this book was what enabled me to get a '5', but I also must suggest three other important factors.
1. A willingness to study and invest "Free-time" to pass
2. A good/experienced teacher
3. Practice/Old AP tests (Collegeboard's website and your teacher should have old AP tests)*Format changed this year on 'Reactions' portion, but old tests still do an ample job preparing*
However good a study guide might be, you, the test-taker have to be accustomed to how the test "works," it's layout, wording, timing, subject matter, and the expectation that a normal 'A' (90%) on this test is unlikely, so you WILL miss questions and you can't let this bother you.
Once again, Colleges are turning to 5's and no other book prepares students as well, but you're the one who has to open it and read it.
