Product Description

In search of the perfect human diet, Victoria Boutenko compares the standard American diet with the diet of wild chimpanzees. Chimpanzees share an estimated 99.4% of genes with humans, but their diet is dramatically different from ours. The most glaring difference is that chimpanzees consume significantly more green leaves than humans. Victoria developed a series of greens smoothies that enable anyone to consume the necessary amount of greens in a very palatable way.

5 out of 5 stars Green for Life.......2007-09-26

I enjoyed this book very much and as much as I enjoy green vegtables there is no way I could eat as many as I need, also I can't chew them that well so this book has given me a way to do it and it is wonderful. I own a Vita Mix and it makes great green smoothies and drinking is much easier than chewing although I still eat salads, I am very grateful for what I am learning, I can't say I am use to drinking them yet but they aren't bad at all and I am getting use to all of this. I thank Victoria Boutenko for all of her work and for her book, it is changing the way I eat.

4 out of 5 stars I love green juice!.......2007-09-24

Wonderful book!

I am not a raw foodist. I love the concept of the lifestyle, but have only been able to do it in small bursts. I can last for about 3 weeks before I'm dying for pizza and cheeseburgers!

I juice every single morning and this book has wonderful juices and smoothies. I especially love the mint, kale, pear smoothie! AMAZING!

I recommend this book even if you aren't a vegetarian/vegan/raw foodist.

5 out of 5 stars User-Friendly and Inspirational!!!.......2007-09-20

Victoria has written one of the most user-friendly nutritional books I have ever read. She takes what very well could be a sweaty subject for most readers, and presents the information concisely, anecdotally, invigoratingly, and with pizazz!

This book details the benefits of transitioning to a raw foods lifestyle. I do not say 'diet' because this is not a diet at all, it is actually a way of life. A mind-blowing, body-transforming, attitude-improving, way of life. Sure, some people will employ the raw foods techniques to enhance their diet, but if you truly want to feel the 'epiphany' (and yes, you will have one if you stick to it), you must commit to living 'green' as fully as you can.

In her book, Victoria starts off with an inspirational message. She challenges everyone to seek their own personal truths, and to never accept what is read for fact until one has personally experienced it. She then goes on to discuss her personal journey and her family's journey into the raw food lifestyle - their pitfalls, their triumphs, and ultimately how it changed their lives for the better.

Victoria provides information on 'green smoothies' and how they have a profound impact on one's health. She also talks about nutritional aspects of traditional SAD (Standard American Diet) versus the Raw Food lifestyle.

Without getting too fussy or overly-technical, she emphasizes the need for fiber, protein, chlorophyll, and also introduces something I never considered - the pH of your stomach juices (aka acidity/alkalinity level), how to measure them, and how they play a key role in whether you 'sink' or 'swim' through life.

She ends her book with Testimonials from a test group who participated in a test study that she herself funded along with friends.

This book was a quick read (took me 4 hours cover-to-cover), easy to understand, realistic in its testimonials, personable, and anecdotal. The Green Smoothie recipes provided were simple and yummy!

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even minutely curious about the raw food lifestyle, specifically green smoothies, and living more green. It is understood that not everyone can live 100% raw, but Victoria encourages us to do our best and that even small steps will improve your health.

5 out of 5 stars I AGREE W/DONNETTE.......2007-09-11

YES, THIS IS BEST FOR THOSE ALREADY RAW EATERS. HOWEVER, ANYONE CAN GET EXCELLENT INFORMATION FROM THIS BOOK. OF ALL THE RAW BOOKS I'VE READ, PROBABLY ABOUT 100, THIS ONE COMES SECOND ONLY TO 'NATURE'S FIRST LAW'.
VICTORIA'S RESEARCH IS VERY GOOD AND HER EXPLANATIONS ARE ASTOUNDING. SO MUCH INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK!!!! AND THE SMOOTHIES ARE TERRIFIC!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but best for those already eating raw.......2007-09-11

This is a lovely book. It is heartening to hear how the Boutenkos cured themselves of terrible diseases with raw foods. I think it provides a great service to those on raw foods in that it reminds us of how important it is to balance the kinds of raw foods we eat. I was apprehensive about some of the recipes for the smoothies because I thought they wouldn't taste that good, but the ones I have tried have turned out to be very tasty indeed. For those who want to learn how to go raw I would recommend Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine by Cousens and LifeFood Recipe Book by Jubb & Jubb.

4 out of 5 stars Good start, but I some criticisms.......2007-10-09

This has a lot of interesting explanations on how the oils mix, about synergistic blends. It is a great overview of aromatherapy.

However, I find the book to be a little bit too preachy. When the author wrote this book, did she consider the audience? Every other sentence explains about the toxicity and the poisons of our every day products. It's a bit much. One doesn't need to convert the choir. They are already converted, at least part way. One can do without such overt preachiness.

My second criticism is that the book is designed for a beginner. As a beginner, it seems to me that the recipes should be a little more basic. While in the beginning, she discusses the 10 essential oils that everyone should have in their basic care arsenal, the other recipes often go far beyond those 10. As a beginner, I have yet to acquire all of these costly oils, and then some. It would be helpful to have recipes that didn't contain 6-10 different oils. An example would be: these two oils is a basic recipe for this, and if you really want to go further, add these as well. (There are a number of recipes like that, but they are far and few.) Also, it would be nice to know why one essential oil was chosen over another for a certain mixture. Is it for anti-inflammatory reasons? For general antiseptic? Anti fungal? One has to do a lot of guessing. This is supposed to be a beginners book, after all.

Outstanding "British" book, but the Index table could be seriously improved. I hope the next edition will correct this minor detail.

5 out of 5 stars Aromatherapy/Essential Oils.......2007-05-26

I usually use Gel Candles to fragrance my home. My daughter first told me about all types of Essential Oils and what they can do. So I went into the Internet and found this great book. It explains everything there is to know. For example, what is safe to use in the home, around children and pets. Its also explains what the scents are, which I plan to use to making greater Gel Candles. Most Important, what not to use cause it can be dangerous to your health. I really recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars be careful..........2007-05-26

The information and rememdies in this book are good but I found very important information on toxicity of oils to be lacking. In short, I tried a remedy for bunions by following the instructions given in the book, but I started feeling very strange and it wasn't until I read another reference book on essential oils that I found tagetes oil is listed on the toxic oil list. The warning is to use it only very diluted (which her recipe was NOT)and for only two weeks. There are some other oils in her recipes that are photoxic for the skin but there is no mention of this in her book. It's of vital importance that the consumer know the complete information about all the oils they will be using. I would recommend buying a complete reference book of esential oils as a companion to this one.

Book Description

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Manual & Desk Reference is a straightforward reference and training source designed to provide the site safety and health professional with a comprehensive guide to responding to emergencies involving releases or potential releases of hazardous substances. Important topics are discussed such as: Toxicology, Sampling and Analysis, Personal Protective Clothing, Chemical Incompatibility, Decontamination, Labels, Placards, and Other Identification, and Site Investigation, Control, and Emergency Response.

Designed along the lines of 29CFR 1910.120 (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response regulation), this manual covers the training requirements of managers, supervisors, and professionals (engineers and scientists) involved in hazardous waste site operations and includes all topics covered in the OSHA-required 40-hour training course.

The CD-ROM contains the book on PDF as well as the NIOSH Chemical Database for 2002. There are blank forms such as: site health and safety plans, checklist, worksheets, sample MSDS sheets, accident report forms, and site visit forms.

The CD also includes sample questions, practice exams and practical field exercises.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcomed Addition To My Reference Library.......2002-05-01

...

Perhaps the most complicated and convoluted set of regulations is those concerning hazardous waste, its handling, disposal, and response to its release. Of course it can be considered that the Federal Government did err by calling process by-products hazardous waste instead of following its performance-based philosophy as demonstrated in the OSHA regulations. Regulatory compliance could have been so much simpler if the definition employed was - this by- product has the potential of being hazardous if miss handled, such miss handling entails the following. Alas, this is not the case and we are burdened with a set of regulations that can turn youth aged overnight.

There is hope however, and a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel can be seen. Coming like Dumas' Three Musketeers of old, galloping into the fray and seeking to make order out of chaos come the Hackmans with their Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response Manual and Desk Reference. Since receiving this volume, it has become a ready and useful reference. It provides 16 chapters along with a CD-ROM of essential compliance information. A true compendium of valuable and useful data, guidance, and analyses.

For example, consider Section 2. Hazardous Waste Defined: Contained therein are the following major topics: The OSHA Definition, EPA Definitions, The DOT Definition and Training Aids and Resources. These are then further broken down into sub topics. Such organization, scope and thoroughness provide a valuable tool when evaluating a particular situation or compliance methodology. Other sections cover such topics as Material Hazards, Chemical Incompatibility, Toxicology, and Sampling and Monitoring to name a few. The most substantial section is entitled Superfund Sites and Brownfields: Site Investigation, Control and Remediation. This alone is broken into 22 subsections, each of which is further subdivided.

Perhaps one of the best technical writers of the last century was Samuel Glasstone. His volumes on Chemistry and Nuclear Engineering were very easy to read, understand, and use. This is because he endeavored to number every new topic so that easy reference could be made. This also provided logic to the subject matter, which assisted in the flow of the information that was providing. The Hackmans have effectively employed this numbering technique, and by doing so have provided not only simple logic and understanding to complex subject matter, but have also provided easy access to the information provided in the text.

The text is enhanced by a Glossary of 91 pages plus a 12-page list of Acronyms. Both of these reference aids are important and necessary because of the complexity of the subject matter and that Federal Regulations breed and feed on acronyms and convoluted terminology. It is almost impossible to maintain understanding and awareness of all of them. In fact, the extensive glossary is a welcome adjunct because of the myriad of technical terms and regulatory definitions a fractioned needs to employ and understand. For example, in this glossary, the term hazardous substance is defined by 7 specific requirements; CERCLA, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Section 112r of the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, DOT, Solid Waste Disposal Act and OSHA. This depth and breadth is valuable because it enables a comprehensive evaluation of a particular situation and assists in eliminating or at least minimizing the chance of an omission error.

It must be remembered that many practitioners are experts in a particular technical or regulatory area. As such, they need a tool that assists them in understanding and in becoming aware of requirements outside of their area of expertise. The provision of comprehensive definitions and information helps to foster such a broad perspective.

In addition to the book a special CD is provided as an additional resource. According to the authors this CD serves three purposes: It provides downloadable and printable resources for trainers - these include a sample HAZWOPER Worker exam, It provides a selection of NIOSH Databases which includes the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, and lastly it provides 18 appendices to the text - these appendices include Limits for Air Contaminants ("Z Lists") 29CFR1910.1000 and the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard, 29CFR 1910.120. Just the contents of the CD is worth the purchase price of the text. All in all, according to the contents, the CD covers 33 separate topics.

When dealing with the complex issues that practitioners face every day, the information contained in the CD forms a comprehensive foundation of knowledge, data and information. This is presented in a concise and easily usable format. Also, instead of creating a second volume, the authors wisely chose this option of the CD to compliment the text, thereby producing one volume packed with essential information and resources.

One of the major frustrations a practitioner faces is that it is usually necessary to consult various references in order to address a particular situation. When a volume comes along that provides an encyclopedia of useful and necessary information, it does simplify many other time-consuming information search tasks. The profession has benefited from this work because it provides that simplification. The authors have brought together information from diverse sources into one volume. One volume, that has already proved its value to my practice.

The only shortcoming is that the use of color, especially in the signs and placarding examples would have been useful and would have assisted in making its reference value even greater. Seeing these items in the colors specified by the regulations would have enhanced the understanding of their meaning and employment. Perhaps just a color insert or inside cover display would have served this need adequately.

This volume has become a useful and welcomed addition to my reference library, and well worth the modest price.

We own an environmental contracting company and we are responsible for training our employees. This is the best book that we have seen to date. It is simple to read and easy to use. One of our services is hazardous material training for our client base. We are planning to use this book in the training classes. We enjoy how the book is laid out and how one subject rolls into the next. The subject matter is right on track for our industry. It is about time a book like this was printed. We are planning to generate revenue from the sale of this book and the upcoming classes that we are developing.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest book on Earth!!!.......2006-09-04

I loved this great book on caring about the environment. It gave me facts and how I could help save the planet by not using my car, recycling and reusing. You Must read this book!

4 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL POLITICS.......2005-10-24

I like this little book because it's realistic and doesn't try to use scare tactics. It's not put out by radicals and it isn't trying to get us to take on too much, too fast. Those who politicize the ecology bug me to death. As if taking care of this planet that we fleetingly occupy is about whether you're on the right or the left, where you stand on gun control, taxes, what defines marriage, or whether the school board should remove Huck Finn from the high school shelves. Making the earth's environment better is selfish, because we stand to benefit from it. It's a planet we share, folks, and we're not doing all we could to leave it in good shape for those who are here now or will live on it when our time is done.

Let's get this straight once and for all: being environmentally conscious does not mean you're a tree-hugging liberal! What it means is, you like a planet that doesn't make you, your children, your grandma and your pet golden retriever sick. The Soviets were a leftist nation and they destroyed their ecology past the point of no return. On the flip side, the right-wing American President Theodore Roosevelt, as Republican as can be, has as one of his legacies the establishment of the National Parks System. "Saving" the planet is not the exclusive domain of leftists, nor-saying it again here--does it equate you with "tree huggers" if you try to do something that benefits the environment. I personally like clean air, clean water, a place to take a walk in nature without stepping in a nice glowing barrel of toxic sludge, don't you? I don't care if you're farther right than Sister Attila the Fourth-Grade Nun you can't honestly say you don't want there to be forests for you to go hunting in, or unpolluted rivers left for you to take your grandkids trout fishing in, am I right? And, yes, we ALL can recoil at the well-intended but self-defeating environmental fanatics who alienate the mainstream society of America by being too extreme and dogmatic. This book is not written for those who chain themselves to an endangered species of mollusk and go on hunger strikes to protest a TV show on global warming. This excellent little book is not like that at all. It presents what I think are really worthy ideas for cleaning up around the neighborhood where you live. It sets some nice projects out for kids (and grown ups) to get done and that is surely better than not educating our young people in environmental responsibility.

Okay, let me put it this way: would you rather have a child dear to you outside some weekend picking up litter, planting a tree in the side yard and sorting recyclable materials, or would you rather have that child sitting in front of the TV with a PS2, becoming another statistic in the epidemic of pre-teen obesity? This book is a small step in the right direction, and if it does nothing more than makes someone, whatever the age, think about the connection between personal behavior and the state of the earth's environment, then it's a nice investment of time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, realistic, easy........2002-09-05

I first read this book years ago as a child. Perhaps the few reviewers on here who do not like the book (and use this review as an outlet for their own personal politics) on here do not realize that parents, teachers, community leaders and religious leaders hardly shelter kids from the outside world as it is, and this book will not upset children, ruin their happiness or waste their childhood at all. As a kid, my friends and I readily accepted this book and were happy to carry out many of the suggestions. Adults seem to look down on kids a lot and think that they just want to play all day and have little care for anything but themselves. The things kids love, such as animals and the outdoors, are in danger, and this book lets kids contribute to help saving them. There are plenty of little tips in this book that do not advocate huge, drastic lifestyle changes. This book also does not come across as preachy or arrogant. Overall it is practical and enjoyable to read.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2002-09-03

This book is totally awesome. I am interested in the environment and since this book includes quotes by kids my age, I feel I am really connected. It makes me feel really cool, like I can really make a difference in the world. And it helps. It tells you ways to help the earth- simple ways. And I learned a lot from it. It has a lot of good, interesting facts in it too.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful: informative and fun to read !.......2001-06-22

I checked this book out from the library and we enjoyed it so much we had to buy one. This book contains simple eco-friendly ideas anyone can try, such as making a bird house out of a milk carton, planting a garden to attract butterflies and other creatures, how to avoid overuse of styrofoam and other non-recyclable materials. It does not suggest major lifestyle changes, just small changes that can add up over time. And it is fun to read! It contains mini-quizes for kids on each topic, such as: which of the following will a worm not eat- vegetables, dirt, or steak?(answer= worms don't eat meat). Each idea includes a question & answer, a description of the concept (such as recycling), a few projects to try at home (such giving old toys to charity or having a yard sale instead of throwing them out), and addresses to write to for more information (such as the National Wildlife Federation, which can help you plan a custom made wildlife-friendly yard). Great, simple projects for kids - a grown-ups too. I am going to buy the sequel as well and look forward to reading it cover-to-cover.

5 out of 5 stars An Educator's Review.......2007-05-06

I had the honor to see Ms. Connors speak at a teacher conference this past week. I was feeling a bit jaded over the profession of teaching after completing my second year of teaching and after completing a research study proposal on the sad state of teacher retention due to low administrative support. I was at an oh-too-typical low point...

Ms. Connors' words (both in spoken and written form--I flew through her book after listening to her speech) really hit home. This is a book that every teacher and every administrator should read. It gives simple solutions that could and would make a big impact upon the current state of education today. I encourage every person involved in teaching students to read this book and think about the roles they currently play and the role they could play. THANK-YOU MS. CONNORS for humorously yet seriously pointing out both the problem and the necessary solutions.

I was flabbergasted when Neila Connors and my principal casually walked into my classroom today (11/11/2005). Her personality is as charming as her book. As a veteran, "rogue" teacher for the past three decades, I completely understand what she means by: "If You Don't Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students." Not only do I believe that literally administrators must "break bread" with teachers, but also, they must give them the positive psychological strokes. Neila Connors has all the necessary "how-to's" in her book. It is a MUST read book!!!

    Book Description

Over the last decade or so research into bullying, emotional abuse and harassment at work, as distinct from harassment based on sex or race and primarily of a non-physical nature, has emerged as a new field of study. Two main academic streams have emerged: a European tradition applying the concept of 'mobbing' or 'bullying' and the American tradition, primarily identified through concepts such as emotional abuse and mistreatment. One focuses on the perpetrator, the other on the victim. In addition, research in this field has also started in Australia and South Africa. All are brought together in this work, in a synthesis of research and analysis of practice in the field. Bullying and Emotional Abuse in the Workplace aims to document the existence and consequences of the problem of bullying, to explore its causes and to investigate the effectiveness of approaches aimed at mitigating and managing the problem, as well as to offer suggestions for further progress in this important new field.

    Book Description

This new edition of a bestseller continues the standard of excellence that earned the first edition the CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Book in 1999. It incorporates traditional concepts in environmental and health science with new, emerging, and controversial issues associated with environmental threats to human health and ecology. Opposing scientific views on major issues such as global warming, overpopulation, the causes of cancer, endocrine disrupters, and more are presented with a balanced and objective view. The book has a technological edge because it is Web-enhanced - with a Web site kept current by the author - making it a "living" environmental health book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best choices.......2007-06-11

As a professor of environmental health science, I find this text to be one of the most comprehensive, balanced, and science-rich texts avaialble. The third edition is the best yet, with minor typos, etc. corrected from previous editions. I also like the balance struck between environmental science and public health in this text. What I have usually found when reviewing texts for course use, is that they over emphasize one area or the other. The new chapter on disaster preparedness is a plus. The science rich presentation is well thought out and balanced. It provides just the right amount of challenge and knitting together of various scientific disciplines to be appropriate for my junior/senior level and graduate students.

    Book Description

The proliferation of chemical substances in commerce poses scientific and philosophical problems. The scientific challenge is to develop data, methodologies, and techniques for identifying and assessing toxic substances before they cause harm to human beings and the environment. The philosophical problem is how much scientific information we should demand for this task consistent with other social goals we might have. In this book, Cranor utilizes material from ethics, philosophy of law, epidemiology, tort law, regulatory law, and risk assessment, to argue that the scientific evidential standards used in tort law and administrative law to control toxics ought to be evaluated with the purposes of the law in mind. Demanding too much for this purpose will slow the evaluation and lead to an excess of toxic substances left unidentified and unassessed, thus leaving the public at risk. Demanding too little may impose other costs. An appropriate balance between these social concerns must be found. Justice requires we use evidentiary standards more appropriate to the legal institutions in question and resist the temptation to demand the most intensive scientific evaluation of each substance subject to legal action.

4 out of 5 stars Regulating Toxic Substances: A Philosophy of Science and the Law.......2007-07-25

Regulating Toxic Substances: A Philosophy of Science and the Law provides a sophisticated and educational analysis of the complexities associated with regulating, assessing and conceptualizing toxic substances. Cranor does an impressive job at dissecting and disentangling the perplexing relationship between scientific risk assessment analysis as it pertains to Tort law, regulatory agencies and their epistemic and philosophical considerations. Theories of distribution and variants of Rawls's concept of Utilitarianism provide an atypical way of conceptualizing ethical justifications for the regulation of carcinogens and other toxic substances. The universal consideration taken by Cranor is the relationship between scientific assessment of toxic substances and public-healthcare policy efficiency. Of particular value, the last four appendices discuss the theoretic and scientific cancer potency estimates in the California Department of Health Sciences (CDHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Models of risk act as a function of Alpha and Beta values, statutes authorizing the regulation of carcinogens, and derivation of TD50 (tumorigenic dose) potency values. Regulating Toxic Substances: A Philosophy of Science and the Law will be best suited for those who are interested in the toxic Tort litigation and familiar with moderate to advanced statistic models of risk assessment and public-healthcare policy. Clanor puts together a cohesive evaluation of the synergetic relationship between toxic substances, policy and scientific method.

5 out of 5 stars Changing the way you look at work.......2001-12-29

Barbara Glantz has written a life altering book--at least a life at the workplace altering book. It is easy to read and filled with hundreds of big and little things that can change the way you spend 40 hours a week. Very positive, super ideas.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books on the topic..........2001-01-07

This book is just okay. There are a lot of examples of how to improve morale at work, but the writing isn't that great, and the book isn't very well organized. There are much better books on the topic...try Managing to Have Fun by Matt Weinstein or 1001 Ways to Energize Employees by Bob Nelson.
