Book Description
Why do some people age in failing health and sadness, while others grow old with vitality and joy?
In this revolutionary book, bestselling author John Robbins presents us with a bold new paradigm of aging, showing us how we can increase not only our lifespan but also our health span. Through the example of four very different cultures that have the distinction of producing some of the world’s healthiest, oldest people, Robbins reveals the secrets for living an extended and fulfilling life in which our later years become a period of wisdom, vitality, and happiness. From Abkhasia in the Caucasus south of Russia, where age is beauty, and Vilcabamba in the Andes of South America, where laughter is the greatest medicine, to Hunza in Central Asia, where dance is ageless, and finally the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa, the modern Shangri-la, where people regularly live beyond a century, Robbins examines how the unique lifestyles of these peoples can influence and improve our own.
Bringing the traditions of these ancient and vibrantly healthy cultures together with the latest breakthroughs in medical science, Robbins reveals that, remarkably, they both point in the same direction. The result is an inspirational synthesis of years of research into healthy aging in which Robbins has isolated the characteristics that will enable us to live long and–most important–joyous lives. With an emphasis on simple, wholesome, but satisfying fare, and the addition of a manageable daily exercise routine, many people can experience great improvement in the quality of their lives now and for many years to come. But perhaps more surprising is Robbins’ discovery that it is not diet and exercise alone that helps people to live well past one hundred. The quality of personal relationships is enormously important. With startling medical evidence about the effects of our interactions with others, Robbins asserts that loneliness has more impact on lifespan than such known vices as smoking. There is clearly a strong beneficial power to love and connection.
“We all have the tools to live longer lives, and to remain active, productive, and resourceful until the very end,” Robbins writes. Healthy at 100 strives to improve both the quality and the quantity of our remaining years–no matter how old or how healthy we might currently be–and to reverse the social stigma on aging. After reading this book, we will never think about age–or life–in the same way again.
“John Robbins has inspired millions of people with his eloquent, clear, compassionate, and insightful guidance on the path to health and fulfillment. Healthy at 100 may be his finest work to date. If you are interested in extending your health span as well as your life span, read this book! Healthy at 100 is a masterpiece.”
–Dean Ornish, M.D., president and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease
“This is a remarkably open and heartfelt book full of wisdom and love by an extraordinary man who has been teaching us how to live more healthy and compassionate lives for over twenty years now. John Robbins has created a new vision of aging for American society.”
–John Mackey, CEO, Whole Foods
“John Robbins is one of the most important voices in America today. He cuts through nonsense like no one else does. He gives hope like no one else does. His words are lifelines for both the body and soul. This book can literally save our lives.”
–Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love and A Woman’s Worth
“Healthy at 100 is a marvelous blend of wisdom, hope, courage, and common sense. John Robbins gives us caring, science, and inspiration–a beautiful diet for the heart.”
–Jack Kornfield, co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock, author of A Path with Heart
“As the low-carb diet craze is gone, John Robbins proposes a far healthier approach that leads not just to a healthy weight but also to a joyful and fulfilled life. Healthy at 100 is packed with informed and heartfelt wisdom.”
–Jorge Cruise, author of The 3-Hour Diet, creator of JorgeCruise.com
“John Robbins inspires me on every page. His unique experiences and viewpoints were the reasons I wanted him to be in my film Super Size Me. This book only reinforces my faith in him as a thought-provoking humanitarian.”
–Morgan Spurlock, producer and director of Super Size Me

Health at 100.......2007-09-20
John Robbin's book Health at 100 is one of the finest books I've read on living a healthy, vibrant life. Based on his own life experience and more particulary on the extensive research around the longest lived and healthiest, happiest people on the planet it is a must read for any person, at any age and stage of life, seeking sound, commensense input on living a healthy life. Very well written and engaging I was truely reinspired the whole book through. I have purchases copies for family and friends.
John's watershed book "Diet For A New America" was the catalyst, 20 years ago, for me becoming a Vegan Vegetarian. This is every bit as profound and compelling. John A Wood, Darlington, Western Australia
Good nutrition advice.......2007-09-19
The first part of the book dealing with nutrition and exercise is unobjectionable, if a bit repetitive and rambling at times. Many people in the West could adopt a much more healthy lifestyle without too much trouble. But the part of the book dealing with love and happiness is straight out of the 1960's. Simply put, in the societies Robbins studied, where people live in isolated mountain and valley enclaves, people probably had little choice but to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Furthermore, in their isolation they were able to live in relatively peaceful and simple societies, where love and fellowship were common. But the rest of the world does not, can not, and will not operate this way. The second half of the book contains simply too much politically leftist, feel-good gobbledygook. Good book on diet and exercise but four stars overall.
Fascinating - Important - Hopeful.......2007-09-09
I listened to this book on CD in my car. I don't know if I could have gotten through reading it but listening to it is just FASCINATING. The information in this book is both sobering and hopeful. It has changed how I view aging for myself and all Americans. As John Robbins tells us, we are living longer but suffering longer too. The information he reports from his massive study is how we can ensure vitality, energy and love soooooooooooo much longer into our elder years than we experience as a nation now. This book has changed my life and I've already handed the CDs over to someone I care for. Buy it.
Scientific Proof for Vegetarian Lifestyle.......2007-08-30
John Robbins has done it again. "Healthy at 100" presents studies of the world's longest-lived peoples, finding that -- despite their wide geographical separation -- they share certain lifestyle traits in common: They all have a largely vegetarian diet; they all live lightly on the land, in harmony with their environment; they all live physically active lives, even into their 100's; they all value and revere their elders; and they all have strong spiritual traditions. Oh, and they are happy. They have simple, low-stress lives. They have little sickness -- certainly none of the chronic illnesses -- like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer -- that we in the West succumb to by the thousands, and take for granted as a part of aging. And they don't war with their neighbors. Surely we could all learn powerful lessons from this book. I wish everyone would read John Robbins' books. We would have healthier, happier, more peaceful lives; and we would live longer in the bargain!
Common sense wisdom, traditional diets, friendships, sun, fresh air, meditation and daily exercise .. a must read .. excellent.......2007-08-27
This book was recommended to me by Physicians from California as well as New England as one of the best guides for any cancer patient to take positive steps to regain her health and well being... It is a simple read, filled with wonderful factual information, scientific findings, and easy steps to take every day to improve your health through the foods you choose and those you eliminate, meditation, exercise, yoga, QiQong or Tai Chi, relationships, etc. John Robbins describes the communities of longest lived peoples who enjoy a quality lifestyle free from disease. In 1994 I visited Vilcabamba, Ecuador near the Peruvian border with my daughter, not knowing its significance during the visit I was amazed to see such healthy men and women in their 80's, 90's and 100's ..I watched an 84 year old woman climb up the hillside of an Andean mountain carrying wood on her back for a nearby Inn. She was not winded, had beautiful long black hair, no gray, all her own teeth and no glasses.. After deliverying her bundle, she had a bit to drink and sprang into a dance with some of the local musicians, then went back the way she came.. something she did twice a day.. Wherever we were in this community we heard people singing while they worked, while they walked, and while they cooked...People treated each other with great respect and consideration, smiles were everywhere as we saw wonderful relationships within their community...Just the way John Robbins described in his book.. I highly recommend these books to anyone who has a severe illness; who is interested in understanding how to improve their health or that of their children .. especially anyone whose children have allergies...
This book is a winner...it helps you respect your body, its ability to regenerate and gives one pause on how you envision your own life's journey
The China Study was also recommended to read next by the same physicians..

so our family has been into healthy
eating for a lifetime.
You certainly make my healthy cooking

Unreasonable format.......2007-05-14
A total waste of my money.
The format of the cookbook was confusing and frustrating--organized according to the season of the year, which may seem like a nice idea, but unrealistic. Trying to find something nice to cook for the evening's meal meant searching thru each season and then searching the dinners-only for that season. Finally, there just weren't many recipes offered.
I wish I could have returned the book, but then I'd have to pay shipping again and it just wasn't worth the time & effort.
Very Good recipes.......2007-05-09
This has a lot of great ideas for recipes that I intend to try. Very good book.
Great if you like Tofu!.......2007-05-07
The book looks great on the outside however many of the recipes are vegan style or tofu related.
REAL EASY AND YUMMY.......2007-04-17
The recipes in this book are indeed delicious and easy and I feel better when I eat the RealAge way. In fact, since eating this way I have more energy and my arthritis seems better. I only really have time to cook on weekends and one night a week but thankfully my husband helps on the other days. I just wish I had more time to cook but when I do I turn to this book as a guide! Dr. Michael Roizen hopes to discover a cure for the common birthday. The author of the bestselling book RealAge and Oprah guru, Roizen translates groundbreaking medical research into a series of calculations and choices that promise to reduce age-linked symptoms and diseases. The RealAge Makeover begins with a self-test of 132 health factor questions that compare your calendar age with your "real age"--based on healthy habits plus heredity, he rounds up the usual suspects (sun exposure, sleep patterns, good fats) as well as the unusual (the kind of chocolate you eat, the number of nagging unfinished tasks, your catsup consumption). Although Roizen flags heredity, he focuses on the three key factors of aging: arteries (heart attack, stroke, memory loss), immune systems (prostate and breast cancer), and environmental stresses (lung cancer, STDs). He offers a sliding scale of difficulty in his "younger every day suggestions." Whether talking about stress, diet, or disease, Roizen offers case examples and subtle and engaging strategies such as describing the role of living beyond your means in aging or the difference between "four-legged" and "no-leg fats." Readers looking for a quick fix will benefit less than those who follow the recommendations that require focus and commitment. As Baby Boomers age and books about turning back time increase, Roizen's will remain a standout. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Why not live at 60 feeling like you did at 35?
Thousands of Americans are younger today than they were five years ago. How is that possible? By following the specific recommendations that reverse aging in Dr. Michael Roizen's bestselling book RealAge®: Are You As Young As You Can Be?, people who were previously much older than their chronological age have now taken up to twentynine years off their biological ages. Since that first publication, more than 10 million people have taken the RealAge® test in one form or another, and thousands of people have thanked Dr. Roizen for helping them make simple changes in their lives -- changes that have made them healthier, younger, and more vibrant.
In the last several years, Dr. Roizen and his team have learned much more about the aging process. The RealAge® Makeover makes sense of recent critical medical findings -- mportant new research on inflammation in your arteries, stress reduction, chronic disease management, hormone replacement therapy, and other choices you can make to keep aging at a distance. You'll also find the latest on vitamins and other supplements, which are age-reducing, which are aging, and which ones to avoid if you are taking certain medications. Roizen then offers more than seventy ways to reduce or even prevent 80 percent of the diseases that make you feel older. For example, coffee or the right kind of chocolate in moderate amounts can help reduce inflammation, preserving your arteries, joints, and memory. But the wrong choice can lead to needless aging and loss of energy, such as taking too much Vitamin A. And The RealAge® Makeover tells you how much (in years) each choice is worth so you can make the choices that are meaningful to you.
More potent than any statistic or finding are the personal stories interwoven throughout -- success stories from readers who followed the RealAge program, became biologically younger, and are living happier, healthier lives. With this book, readers have more opportunity than ever to turn back their biological clock to look, feel, and actually be many years younger.
Join the RealAge® Revolution and give yourself a RealAge® Makeover!

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure.......2007-08-28
And "prevention" (of aging and disease) is the underlying message of this makeover program.
The Dr. Roizen (who partnered with Dr. Oz for the successful "You" series of books) provides easy to follow guidelines for doing the things you know you need to do for better health.
This isn't necessarily a book you'll sit down and read cover to cover. It may work better for you if you turn to the chapter that addresses your most pressing concern (weight, smoking, etc.), and start there.
Because the other underlying message is that you have to start SOMEWHERE to get your health under control.
With this book, the plan is laid out for you in easy to understand language. The implementing may not be quite as easy. That part takes determination.
So if you're determined to do something about your health, you'll find what you need here.
(So why 4 stars, not 5? Because, unlike the "You" books, this one has no "cute" illustrations, and it is dense with text. Something that may be off-putting for readers who like their medicine to go down smoothly, and with a touch of humor.)
The more you know...........2007-07-19
Roizen tells you easy ways to improve your health and well being.
His methods are straight forward and completely obtainable.
The hard part, incorporating these practical and easy steps into the formation of your new habits.
Before you buy this, you probably already know that you need to change your lifestyle and habits. If you have the will power to change, you will love this book. If you don't have the will power, you will need a very wobbly table to level before this book will be useful to you.
RealAge.......2007-05-12
It is OK. Uses the hype: Your younger than you think are, as long as you take care of yourself. Daaaa
More of the same..........2007-05-07
You can find this info on line so I wouldn't spend the money unless you're a real health nut and need to read everything and anything written on aging etc. It's OK but the internet would be faster and just as informative.

Dr. Weil has raised dispensing health advice to an art form. Instead of making his audience feel inadequate or guilty about bad habits, he seems to subconsciously convince readers to do better merely by presenting health facts in a non-threatening way. Healthy Aging is his most scientifically technical book yet (you'll learn all about enzymes like telomerase and cell division and the chemistry behind phytonutrients like indole-3-carbinol, and the connection between cancer and other degenerative diseases like diabetes) yet by far his most fascinating.
His main mission here is to recommend "aging gracefully," which he considers accepting the process instead of fighting it. As the director of the country's leading integrative-medicine clinic (combining the best of traditional and alternative worlds), of course he disses Botox and the slew of $100-a-jar face creams out there. It's also no surprise that he focuses on proper nutrition, moderate exercise, and meditation and rest among his "12-point program for healthy aging." (Triathletes and exercise addicts should take special note of the research linking excessive exercise and ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.) He occasionally references his earlier works, including 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. But the most eye-opening sections are those that discuss the spirituality of aging and its emotional aspects. "Aging can bring frailty and suffering, but it can also bring depth and richness of experience, complexity of being, serenity, wisdom, and its own kind of power and grace," he writes. At 63, Weil is still a bit shy of senior status, but is aging well indeed, with the legacy of his late 93-year-old mother (who's touchingly eulogized by Weil in this book) to guide him.--Erica Jorgensen

Customer Reviews:
Another interesting angle on aging and acceptance.......2007-09-14
Dr. Weil gives a straight-forward, no-nonsense take on everything from cosmetic surgery to cosmetic complusions to vitamin supplements and all the silly crap in between.
He fortifies a long-standing belief that had I've for years that if you over-power your body with supplements and vitamin-chemicals, you can actually cause much more damage than if you just ate healthy and exercised even occasionally. Many people believe that if you overdo vitamins and supplements, you simply excrete and eliminate any amount over what you can use. It's simply not true and Dr. Weil tells you why it's not true and what the real cost to your body can be.
Weil gets into the oxidant/anti-oxidant discussion (along with a number of other "now" subjects") from a place of intelligence and medical experience that can make the most ardent supporter of supplements feel downright silly. He thoughtfully attacks the "more is better" crowd and pulverizes the opposition who insist on stuffing huge quantities of fish oil, Vitamin A,B,C and K into their mouths at every turn. Can you say "overload?"
A chilling truth comes out when Weil starts detailing how you can cause damage and disease by taking that route. And his sobering tales of stupidity for people who mess with their "ph" levels is dead-on. Example in that line of thought: If your body is naturally wired to work at maintaining a neutral ph level, and it is, why in the world would you take supplements or eat certain foods to mess with it? If you eat foods or substances that claim to alter your ph levels, your body will fight to re-establish a neutral ph state. The resulting stress that you can cause your own body thinking you're doing a good thing can be deadly!
Be prepared to dust-off the old college biology textbook in a few dicussions. Weil takes us to the cellular level right through the cell membrane and into your own mitochondria. And this isn't a multi-level marketing presentation at your dinner table with the crazed neighbor who won't leave. It's human biology, physiology and common sense.
He zeroes-in on our culture's phobia toward aging gracefully and it hurts because it's so true. His anecdotes about how uncomfortable some poeple get when they're around the elderly are painful to read when he hits the proverbial nail on the head with a proclamation that many of us are uncomfortable around old people because we see how we're going to turn-out...if we live that long. Ouch!
If you're at that stage where aches and pains that you would have shrugged off at age 19 are a part of your daily routine, read this book. If your significant other is spending otherworldly amounts on "anti-aging" creams and potions, read this book. If your goal in life is too get a tummy-tuck, a eye-lid surgery or you're constantly dyeing your hair, read this book.
But only if you want to change those expensive and systematic annoyances and learn to grow old gracefully. His story about the old pine tree outside his home in Arizona will bring it right to your front door!
Tonic for those who fear the future.......2007-08-16
Dr. Weil does an excellent service with this book - he provides his readers with reasonable goals to set as they foresee their aging years. And he evaluates a range of approaches - diet, exercise, dietary supplements - debunking some and recommending many. Add to that his personable voice (I listened to him narrate the Book on Tape version). Use this book to plan for your own future.
Good Advice.......2007-08-02
The first part of the book was a little scientific, although I understand why it's in there, but I really enjoyed the 2nd half of the book. Very informative. I really appreciate how Dr. Weil doesn't say his way is the only way. There are also good resources in the back for further study. I've been looking up and reading many of the in the book list and reading them!
I'm also going to be reading Dr. Weil's other books.
ex-biochemist review............2007-07-24
I currently work in the field of psychology, but I was educated as a research scientist in the area of biochemistry. Prior to that period, I was a teaching fellow in physiology and have had a strong interest in integrative medicine as well as integral psychology.
I think this is probably Dr. Weil's best book to date. The suggestions he make are very practical and wise. He also frames aging as something positive, which is unusual in our culture. I think his suggestions for supplementation are also quite good and he provides a lot of good references throughout the text.
While the book is more technical than some of his earlier works, it is also very accessible. The technical material that is presented is fascinating and relevant. For the most part, this material is related to the aging process, particularly of cells. He also talks about how turning off these normal processes relate to cancer.
I also like this book because it is well-rounded. It covers every sphere of life including exercise, diet, the need for touch, social connection and even spiritual needs. It is comprehensive, yet easy to follow and impliment. The advice seems very sound and responsible to me.
This is a great owner's manual for aging. It's a very small investment for a potentially very high return. Also, it's not a lot of hype about staying young forever and making false assertions to prey on people's fear of aging. In short, it's very well done.
Dr. Weil actually visited some of longest lived cultures, to learn what contributes to their health.......2007-07-18
Okinawans reportedly live longer than any other culture and Dr. Weil has spent time there, observing their culture, diet and lifestyle, unlike many armchair researchers, who merely read what others publish. He contrasted the Okinawan diet, with the Japanese diet and diets and lifestyles of other longer lived cultures.
I would like to see someone examine why the counties with the longest average life span, in the United States, are high altitude areas, in Colorado, 2 counties, in Iowa and one, in Maryland. Hawaii was the state, with longest average lifespan, with Minnesota second longest. Perhaps, Dr. Weil will examine this interesting phenomenon.
Dr. Weil refocuses antiaging medicine from an obsession with cosmetics and physical appearance to a focus on actual biological health. He makes an important personal observation that all of the ALS patients he has encountered were exceptionally lean and athletic and speculates that extremely low body fat, may reduce protection from fat soluble neurotoxins.
Medically, body fat below 5 %,is very unhealthy and associated with increased cardiac risk. Anorexics have excessive dopamine neurotransmitter levels and considerably increased death risk.
Many of the people, on the covers of the muscle magazines, are less healthy, than they look. Some of these people abuse thyroid, testosterone, human growth hormone and even insulin! One of our Florida Detox patients suffered dangerously high blood pressure, apparently due to an iron overload, secondary to testosterone abuse, although he possessed an impressive physique, due to bodybuilding.
Weil focuses on healthy aging, not immortality. He discusses the lifespan limits imposed by telomeres. Much of the information found regarding reducing inflammation, protein glycation, free radical oxidation, etc., can be found in other books, but Weil provides a good comprehensive, readable discussion of most of the present knowlege, of healthy aging. Book Description
In her very successful book, The Schwarzbein Principle, renowned endocrinologist Diana Schwarzbein introduced her scientifically proven conclusion that degenerative diseases are not genetic, but acquired. Many studies have supported this, proving that life expectancy is 75 to 90 percent due to habits and only 10 to 25 percent due to genetics. This means that someone who is genetically destined to die at age 100 may not live past age 60 because of poor habits and lifestyle choices that cause accelerated aging and premature death. Conversely, a person can live to 100 and be functionally healthy. In this highly anticipated follow-up, Diana Schwarzbein, M.D., goes beyond the diet she introduced in her first book-which literally helped thousands of people lose weight-and offers a personalized anti-aging program for readers to heal their metabolisms and stop advanced aging in its tracks. Weaving in groundbreaking research and provocative case studies-including her own regeneration and that of her clients-she leads readers through a series of eye-opening questionnaires, which identify where they are on their path to either accelerated or healthy aging. Based on readers' answers, she leads them to the "how-to" sections, which explain, in easy-to-follow and personalized detail, the steps they need to take to restore healthy functioning. For each unique situation, she covers five areas: Nutrition , Hormone Replacement Therapy (if needed), Tapering Off Toxic Chemicals or Avoiding Them Completely , Cross-Training Exercises and Stress Management. The Schwarzbein Principle II is sure to follow the success of the first book and will help people live a more healthful lifestyle by embracing a regeneration process to prevent and reverse accelerated aging.

Understand Your Metabolism.......2007-09-20
This book taught me a lot about my metabolism. It made me aware of mistakes I was making by how I ate and what I ate. My body just naturally shed 20 pounds over the last year or so by applying what I learned from the book. Once my metabolism returned to a healthier state, the weight was shed naturally. I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is diabetic.
It left me feeling unsure of the whole thing!.......2007-08-10
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of Schwarzbein and have been following it with good results. So, since I enjoy reading, I was very interested in reading book 2. Even for someone who enjoys reading it took a lot of willpower to get through the whole 500 page book without quitting. The first half is a great deal of technical information that is boring and extremely repetitive. (The whole book could have been condensed into 150 pages easily.) The second half of the book is about the plan itself. It was very discouraging to be following one way from her original book and then she changes a lot in the second book. Like maybe she wasn't right after all. So, to sum it up it ends up leaving you wondering whether she knows what she is talking about or not. The good news is I think that the general way of eating is great, but I have a hard time with being fully convinced in view of her changes (regarding saturated fats, amounts of grams, now having to weight proteins, etc.). I hope this helps.
Tunnel Vision to the Hormones.......2007-07-26
With this book, Dr Schwarzbein has shown just how severe her tunnel vision is on the hormones and the endocrine system. There are falsities throughout the entire book because she completely ignores peer-reviewed research in any area that is not directly involved in the endocrine system.
For instance, she lists ADD/ADHD as a lifestyle disorder that's a result of low serotonin. I'm a young adult/adult Learning Disabilities Specialist with a background in neuropsychology. According to the peer reviewed research that has been available for over a decade, ADD/ADHD is a genetic disorder for which researchers have found several alleles that, when switched on, create the disorder. Newer research has shown that the brains of people with ADD/ADHD have as much as 15% less gray matter in specific areas in the right hemisphere that have to do with focus and attention, and this discrepancy has been imaged via MRI. And research has shown for over 3 decades that all of this leads to a decreased level of dopamine, not serotonin. Some people with ADD/ADHD do have decreased levels of serotonin but not all.
Another instance where she completely ignores the research is when it comes to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), which she all but dismisses out of hand. Research to date has shown that there is a genetic tendency towards CFS, that it is a central nervous system disorder that can have disasterous effects (a woman in England died from it summer of 2006 and the autopsy showed her spinal cord, brain stem and areas in the brain to be highly inflammed), that the majority of people who have this CNS disorder have smaller than average adrenal glands (imaged with CT and MRI), which may make it impossible for them to absorb all of the daily stressors that come our way, and that onset almost always occurs after a significant trauma (death of a loved one, accident, severe illness, etc). According to some leading researchers in the field, CFS is akin to an electrical overload hitting the circuit breaker box in your house and shutting down all the systems. It hits the hypothalamus in the brain, which controls all the systems in the body, and they all drop low. Lifestyle doesn't do that, folks. Something far more intense is required to create such a destructive onset.
Less well known but highly important research in the field of immunotoxicology has shown in the last 5-10 years that what a pregnant woman is exposed to in the last trimester of pregnancy can damage a fetus' immune system making it difficult at best for the child's immune system to mature once it is born. If an individual goes through life with an immature immune system, that person is unable to mount an adequate immune defense against disease, their immune system often doesn't know the difference between an external invader and their own tissue so they develop auto-immune disorders, and their immune system may be on such high rev that they're hypersensitive to much in their environment, hence multiple chemical sensitivities, allergies and asthma. In fact, the data is so overwhelming that the EPA and FDA are currently developing new guidelines for drug and chemical testing that would address prenatal exposure.
While I find that Dr. Schwarzbein's message to balance out the diet and eat whole foods as opposed to processed foods to be the standard message at this time (think Dr Hyman's book Ultrametabolism) and probably the most prudent form of diet to follow, much of the information she presents in her book is out and out false and needs to be seriously challenged.
Best guide for eating right on the market today!.......2007-07-09
Diana Schwarzbein has it down! Her books are informative and well written, easy to read and understand. She has done her homework and knows what she is talking about. I have read many "diet" books, this one holds truth.
Read "The Program".......2007-07-08
Her principle is excellent, the program is fantastic, however, if you are not familiar with her system...read her book called "The Program" as your first read. It reads easiest and is the most understandable and will be a great foundational block to her other books.
Book Description
At last, here's a book that synthesizes the increasingly popular CR (Calorie Restriction) diet for the layperson. CR is not a diet primarily about weight loss, although readers will lose weight. CR is about eating highly nutritious foods to extend your healthy years.
Here's the concept: eat fewer calories and choose foods more carefully. This will reallocate how your metabolism uses its resources to convert food into energy; in other words, what goes in will be used more efficiently. You will feel better and function better—and the big bonus: the CR diet slows aging. CR lengthens the periods of youth and middle age and substantially reduces the risk of virtually all the diseases of aging.
Brian Delaney and Lisa Walford, two longtime CR practitioners, will take you on a handheld stroll through the process, including an introduction to CR, how to do it, some of the key issues in the current dialogue, and the skinny on superfoods.

Great into to calorie restriction and its benefits.......2007-09-22
This book about calorie restriction and how to go about trying it. The authors are Brian Delaney, President of the Calorie Restriction Society, and Lisa Walford, the daughter or Dr Roy Walford who was one of the early proponents of calorie restriction for people. They are both well connected to the community that is trying calorie restriction, and well grounded in the science behind it.
From their experience, improvements in health and slower aging come from any regimen that includes reduced calories over what is considered a normal level. So you can eat some high-glycemic food such as rice or potatoes, or eat a really healthy diet where all of your carbohydrates come from vegetables and fruit. You can eat one meal a day, or graze throughout the day. All of the apparent benefits will result as long as you eat enough less than normal.
There are a number of ways to track progress: watch your weight and when it gets to a BMI of 15-16 then eat enough to keep it there; track total calories relative to normal for your body height/frame; or track health markers such as fasting blood sugar, liver function, lipids (e.g. cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides), blood pressure, and immune system function.
They emphasize repeatedly that you should talk to your doctor or health professional before going on this regimen, and that it is not for everyone. If you are pregnant or want to get pregnant or have certain medical conditions you should definitely NOT use this diet. If you have a lot of weight to lose to get to a low BMI, or if you are over 60, you should definitely take it slow and not make too radical a change.
They make a number of key points:
* Because you are eating a reduced-calorie diet, you have to make sure that you get enough nutrients: protein, fat, calories, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
* This is why most practitioners eat all of their carbohydrates in the form of vegetables and fruit, because they have very high nutrition value per calorie. When you eat a lot of calories from starch (bread, potatoes, white rice, other starches) it is very hard to reduce your calorie intake enough and still get enough nutrition.
* If you adopt this regimen, you have to find a way to do it that works for you and lets you enjoy life. Don't stress out about it
* Exercise and managing stress are important for everyone
I really liked their idea of "energy density" and "nutrition density" for food. For example, cheese has high energy density; vegetables have high nutrition density. To feel fuller and to get enough nutrition, you want a lot of your calories to come from high-nutrition, low-energy-density foods. This is a good point for everyone, not just when you are on a calorie restriction diet.
I had a couple of issues with their advice:
* they do not recommend using omega-3 supplements, suggesting that you will get enough omega-3 from a high-nutrient diet. I don't think this is the case, to get enough omega-3 for optimal brain function you almost have to supplement, or eat very expensive grass-fed meat, grass-fed dairy, etc, or eat very large amounts of fish.
* they mention fasting as an alternative for reducing total calories, that this is easier for some people. However, this book was written before research came out that suggests fasting is not healthy on a regular basis.
* they are convinced that calorie restriction will increase maximum human lifetimes, but I don't think that we know or can say at this point. (It is clear that calorie restriction with good nutrition does increase your life expectancy, but not that you should expect to live past 100 on this regimen.)
There is some research that suggests that the important thing is not the reduced calories, but the hormones that are released when you are hungry. So I think I'm going to try skipping lunch and snacks, having a normal breakfast and dinner, and eating enough at those meals to feel full. I'll continue to track my weight and ongoing blood sugar levels, and see what the effect is
Fascinating stuff, and I recommend the book.
Feel better, live longer, what else could you want.......2007-08-31
I'm 75 years old. Since getting with the longevity diet, I feel better, my health parameters are better, and I'm getting lighter. I believe I can think a little better. I'll tell you something, when you're my age, sometimes living longer doesn't seem so good. But, when you feel good, there's really no limit to how long you want to live. Because you feel good, you reach out. You make new, younger friends, because you're acting younger. You exercise because you feel like exercising. You really must get this book. Read it and do it. It will make a wonderful difference in your life. Will the Longevity Diet really make you live longer? Well, I think so, but it really doesn't matter, because your life will be better. I think so much of this book that I buy it to give away.

Longevity Diet.......2007-06-27
There is something wrong with the book you sent me. About every 10 pages, a page is faded and impossible to see the print on it. I just skip the page and go on, but it irritates me. I haven't done anything about it because I don't want the hassle of wrapping it up, taking it to the post office, and paying for postage on it. If you see fit, I'd appreciate your sending me another one plus a container and postage to send the first one back in.
The Longevity Diet: Discover Calorie Restriction.......2007-05-13
I found this book to be excellent in summarising the findings on calore restriction which I was familiar with. I had read all of Roy Walford's books and am convinced of the benefits of calorie restriction. Because the book encapsulates the key principles, it will be helpful for someone who is beginning and at the same time for those who need a refresher such as myself. I find the daily planning will enable me to monitor my food intake, especially the types of foods that are nutrient rich and have low energy density. I might add that it's not just theoretical as there are testimonies from people on the whys and hows of the Longevity Diet. I recommend this book highly for anyone who wants to age healthily.
Reverend Brian Bower.......2007-01-18
I found Delaney & Walford's "Longevity Diet" non-threatening, non-technical, and educational. It is a sufficient introduction to the concept of calorie restriction (CR)for a layman audience, but lacks details on some of the more in depth ideas of gerontology. The Longevity Diet has reasonable recommendations concerning changes in ones diet and includes a rather comprehensive list of the nutritional content of many CR friendly foodstuffs. Thankfully, many of the details that are missed or simplified in The Longevity Diet are explained in several online resources that are listed in the back of the book.
For the price it is hard to beat, if only as an introduction to the world of CR.

Book Description
Arigorous analysis of dramatic studies on therapeutic power of nutrition has led Dr. Oscar H. Franco and a team of acclaimed researchers to determine that substituting certain foods in place of the leading medical "cocktail" for preventing cardiovascular disease yields identical benefits. As reported in the British Medical Journal, they concluded that daily consumption of seven specific foods could result, on average, in an increase in total life expectancy of 6.6 years for men and 4.8 years for women.
Dr. Ralph Felder, a physician and a master-trained chef, has now taken these groundbreaking studies out of the laboratory and put them into the kitchen. Using his inspired yet easy-toprepare recipes and creative menu plans, along with a few simple lifestyle guidelines, anyone can add healthy years to his or her life, enjoy-with few restrictions-a wide range of delicious and satisfying foods, and lose weight safely and easily, while indulging in goodies like chocolate and nuts.
Customer Reviews:
bonus years diet.......2007-06-23
My daughter bought this book for me after reading about it in Oprah magazine. Dosing food like doctors dose pills. A great idea. Dr. Felder gives us menus for an entire month and that makes it so easy to follow this diet. The recipes are great. He is a chef and knows his stuff! My husband loves chocolate so his new favorite dessert is the chocolate risotto pudding. I love the stuffed french toast. I just saw Dr. Felder on tv and as he says "this is a diet we cal live with."
The Bonus Years.......2007-06-20
I own many cookbooks but this is absolutely one of my favorites. I love the healthy aspects of this book. I appreciate all of the research put into it---delicious dishes based on science, but wow do I thoroughly enjoy the recipes. Dr. Felder's Chefs hat shines through here. I love the pan-grilled salmon with frisee salad lyonnaise--excellent!! The black bean chili is delicious and the crab salad with creamy dressing is the best. Another favorite is the salmon with shanghi red sauce. What a grerat combination, a MD and Chef. No wonder this book is so good.
The Bonus Years Diet.......2007-06-08
An incredibly useful and informative book. At last something about lifestyle which makes sense and is fun at the same time. I congratulate the author for making such complex stuff so understandable.
Right on with good nutrition except for fruits and veggies.......2007-04-20
Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.
Book Description
In their New York Times bestseller The Okinawa Program, Drs. Bradley and Craig Willcox and Makoto Suzuki explained why the Okinawans are the longest-lived people on earth. Now, they offer a practical diet program rooted in Okinawan traditions so that you too can have a leaner, more “metabolically efficient” body that will stay healthier and more youthful. Conveniently divided into three dietary tracks—western, eastern, and a fusion plan that combines both—their program will help you achieve healthy weight loss without deprivation. With more than 150 recipes, an eight-week phase-in plan, and other unique resources, The Okinawa Diet Plan is an easy-to-follow breakthrough concept in healthy weight loss.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book if you're into nutrition.......2007-05-12
This is a very good book with good recipes. I think you need to be interested in nutrition and diet to find it a good read. However, considering the average American diet, perhaps it should be a required text in all high schools. Some of the recipes call for ingredients that are difficult to find unless you live in an area with a large Japanese population.
No gimmicks, this works!.......2006-08-05
The concept of eating foods lower in energy density is something that I found out through Barbara Rolls excellent book, The Volumetrics Eating Plan. This is another great book that I would recommend in addition to the Okinawa Diet Plan, because it is full of great recipes for Western style tastes. It also includes energy density and a complete nutritional breakdown for each recipe. If you are following a plan like Weight Watchers, both books will fill you with ideas to make meal times more filling and more interesting.
Not all Soy is Created Equally.......2006-07-29
I'm no expert. But, I am Chinese. My family and I thrive on Asian-made soy products such as tofu. We are allergic to western-made soy products. If someone can provide a plausible reason for this, I would be most interested. (Except where those Asian-made soy products are imported from Communist China. I would recommend soy products from Taiwan. I am most concerned about unscrupulous manufacturing processes from Communist China.)
I cannot speak for soy products made here in the U.S. So, beware of all recommendations for or warnings against soy products. I believe not all soy is created equally.
A Research-Based Plan for Achieving Healthy Weight Loss.......2005-08-15
We are currently working on programs to help people achieve better health. Unlike most eating plans, the OK diet guidelines on based the latest research on the relationship between the types of foods eaten and the long term effects on health. Our test subjects have maintained lower LDL cholesterol and trigyclerides, healthy waist circumferences, and lower body fats for more than 1 year, by using our healthy eating and exercise programs, which are based on the guidelines recommended by the authors. I highly recommend both this book and their previous one, The Okinawa Program.
Pseudo Science .......2005-08-14
What a morass of conflicting data! First it's this much soy, then that much. Then the 100 year olds are still in their prime because of an oil that was only invented in Canada 20 years ago.
What a sorry state that this book could even get printed much less reach popular status. Kaayla Daniel, author of THE WHOLE SOY STORY has written an excellent summary of the problems with this book here on Amazon as well as of THE CHINA STUDY, another sorry attempt to push a dietary agenda by "cooking statistics." While it's certainly good to eat your vegetables, be cautious about switching to a high soy diet based on pseudo scientific claims.

Book Description
America’s perceptions about the inevitable effects of aging are about to be completely rethought, thanks to groundbreaking new information from an internationally known expert on hormones and antiaging medicine. Thierry Hertoghe, M.D., has an important message to share: people are aging unnecessarily.
Based on thirty-five years of scientific studies,
The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer with Natural Hormone and Nutrition Therapies is the first book that offers a prescriptive program to counter memory loss, weight gain, wrinkles, shrinking muscle mass, impotence, hair loss, and a host of other signs and symptoms of aging. Dr. Hertoghe offers an effective program of hormone replacement therapy using safe, low doses of natural hormones—in conjunction with a healthy diet and vitamin and mineral supplements—to help people maintain physical, mental, and emotional health and literally restore their bodies to a state that’s three to twelve years younger than their actual age. He identifies the fifteen main, crucial hormones found in the body and explains the process that restores each one to its correct level.
With a foreword by renowned doctor Barry Sears,
The Hormone Solution is filled with self-scoring checklists, eating plans, nutritional prescription plans, and hormone shopping lists that help every reader calculate his or her personal hormone profile. Dr. Hertoghe is revolutionizing the medical field with his work, showing us how to treat chronic illnesses and the large and small aspects of aging by using preventive measures to drastically slow the aging process and its effects without costly procedures and surgeries. The Hormone Solution is a landmark publication that will revolutionize how people age, enabling us to live longer, healthier, and happier lives
From the Hardcover edition.

The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer with Natural Hormone and Nutrition Therapies.......2007-08-23
Comprehensive. Includes suggestions for communication with your doctor to request appropriate labs and prescriptions for bioidentical hormones to improve health, longevity and well being. Also includes dietary modifications to support a bioidentical hormone replacement protocol. Written by the top endocrinologist in the world. Very insightful, cutting edge knowledge.
Learning about hormonal deficienties.......2007-05-15
This book is clearly written. The author makes it possible for everyone to get a clue about which hormones might be missing in his/her body before visiting a health professional. Many health issues are covered with the specific hormonal deficienties. I found it very clarifying and it brought me a step forwards in my search for my lost health. I have read also the books of John R. Lee. The book of Thierry Hertoghe gives not so much information about what one can do self in comparison with the books of Lee on female issues.
Doctors Also Can Learn From This Book.......2005-09-06
What I like well in this book is the numerous tables, the questionnaires and the lists that summarize the essential data in each chapter.
What I like most in this book is the emphasis on clinical signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of hormonal imbalance rather than the usual relying on lab test only.
The author is from the fourth generation in a family of physician specializing in hormones well before the term "Endocrinology" had been invented. His great-grandfather, Dr. Eugene Hertoghe has given his name to the "Sign of Hertoghe", the shorter eyebrows of people with hypothyroidy and his father, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe has introduced the now widely used 24 hours thyroid hormone test. The test much better correlates with the signs, symptoms and complaints of thyroid hormone utilization than the usual thyroid hormone blood tests.
With his seminars and publications the author is well in line with the tradition of his family.
This book is a major contribution to our understanding of hormonal processes. I recommend this book to every person (inclusive physicians) interested in learning more about the way hormones affect us in all the aspects of our existence.
If You Haven't Been Feeling Well & Don't Know Why, It May Be Whacked Out Hormones.......2005-09-04
I love how this book was written. Originally I set out to just do some learning on Bio-identical Hormones for a friend and found out that I may have issues with my own hormones.
He talks about what can happen to our bodies when our hormones are not balanced, and over the long-term, can lead to diseases.
The book is broken down into 4 major areas:
1. Hormones
2. Body
3. Mind
4. Hormone Solution
In Chapter 2 (which is a part of #1), he gives a quiz (Part I) on each of the 15 hormones he talks about in his book and the symptoms of deficiency. The hormones would be ACTH, Aldosterone, Calcitonin, Cortisol, DHEA, EPO, Estrogen, Growth Hormone, Insulin, Melatonin, Pregnenolone, Progesterone, Testosterone, Thyroid Hormones, and Vasopressin.
In Part II of the quiz, he quizzes your Energy, Sex, Sleep, Skin/Hair, Weight Control, Stress, Mood, Circulation (Heart & STroke), Joints, Bones, and Immune System.
It takes a bit to complete the full quiz, but well worth it. With the Part II stuff, he goes into further details about each of these.
In each of those sections, he'll talk about detecting & decoding one's deficiencies, how to eat to heal, the nutrients needed, supplementation, scientific evidence/studies, and concludes with summary of each of the 15 hormones that may impact that particular issue (i.e., weight issue).
For the Hormone Solution, he breaks this down into:
1. The hormone
2. Treatment
3. Recommended dosage & frequency
4. What they may be associated to in terms of impact with other hormones.
He has a couple pages for resources and 59 pages of references. WOW!!!
This book was very informative and the first book I read on hormones. I've since read several other books, but still like this one the best.
A good compliment to this book is Natural Hormone Balance for Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss, who is a ob-gyn in Beverly Hills. He covers some other things Dr. Hertoghe doesn't.
Something I'd like to mention is I did go get a 24-hr urine analysis that looked at a number of the hormones mentioned in this book. His quiz made it fairly easy for me to have my doctor test for certain things and they were fairly close to being correct.
My naturopath has now given me some BIHs to help me rebalance those hormones I was deficient in. Am feeling so much better and this was about 3.5 weeks ago.
The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer With Natural ...........2003-01-19
I found this book to be well organized and easy to read and understand. There is a wealth of information about the role of hormones in the body, and the consequences of not having enough as you age. I enjoyed the detailed explanation of the function of each hormone. At the end of each section, Dr. Hertoghe adds a one page table of a condensed version of his recommendations for easy reference. That makes the book very user friendly. The book has information that is revelant to older and middle aged people, as well as people in their twenties. I thought I could share this book with my sister, but we both like it so much as a reference that we had to buy another one. Thanks to Dr. Hertoghe for shedding light on so many hormonal changes associated with getting older. Can't live without it anymore!

Touted as the fountain of youth in pill form, DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, is a hormone naturally produced by the body. The young body, that is; by age 85, you produce 95 percent less DHEA than at age 25. Stephen Cherniske, a biochemist who has tracked the research on DHEA for years, has compiled a handy reference to help sort out the hype from this hormone's reported helpfulness for boosting libido and immune function, improving bone density, aiding weight loss, relieving depression and atherosclerosis, and even reducing the size of tumors.
DHEA is inexpensive and readily available in health food stores or through the Web; that's about where the simplicity wears off. It's not regulated by the FDA, so recommended doses vary widely, from 10 to 50 milligrams or more a day. It's also available in both natural and chemical forms, and, unfortunately, sometimes in combination with potentially dangerous stimulants such as ephedra, an herb that has been shown to cause insomnia and an irregular heartbeat. Cherniske gives suggestions for which type of DHEA to buy and in what doses, depending on such things as your age and activity level, as well as recommended sources. He also provides a "longevity program" with suggested co-supplements, such as ginseng and vitamin B6, along with exercises suited to even the completely out-of-shape, to optimize the effectiveness of the DHEA. There's also information about the ins and outs of DHEA testing and how to analyze your results (Cherniske reminds us that "normal" often tells us nothing), and potential side effects for both women and men. Overall, Cherniske does an excellent job of separating fact from fiction about this controversial but quite extraordinary supplement.

He is a fraud.......2006-08-03
He is NOT a doctor. The only degree he has is from a unaccredited CORRESPONDENCE school!!! It was shut down by court order in 2001. He paid $72 for his "degree". He is now involved in Oasis Life Sciences, a MLM selling junk.
Legal Androgel.......2006-03-12
DHEA is the only drug that has made my testicles bigger.I suffer from HYPOGONADISM.Taking testosterone only made them smaller.
This is a great book for those who want to feel like a man again.
I only take 25mg. a day you don't really need that much.
Life Transforming.......2006-02-01
I was only replacing with a new copy the original one I bought in October 1998, which I loaned and did not receive back.

Response to 'a reader' that barks more than Researches.......2005-05-17
This is in response to the 'a reader' below who seems to suffice on half-efforted research. I have met Mr. Cherniske and found the following information from my own meager research.
In a free society, people are entitled to express their opinion. Stephen Barrett uses websites to express his opinions regarding a number of topics, including network marketing, alternative and complimentary medicine, nutritional supplements and those who promote nutritional supplements. He presents his views in an authoritative manner, leading some to confuse these opinions with actual fact. In reality, what Dr. Barrett chooses to include in his "profiles" is extremely limited and loaded with innuendo. What's the issue? Stephen Cherniske attended Columbia Pacific University from 1979 to 1982. The school, as Dr. Barrett admits, was accredited at that time, and then degree requirements were quite stringent. The court order referenced by Dr. Barrett only affects students who attended after June of 1997. Still, he includes Mr. Cherniske in a list of recent graduates from Columbia Pacific University, hoping to disparage by association what he cannot say in print.
Of course, the fact that one's Masters Degree is not from Harvard should mean very little in a review of someone's career. Mr. Cherniske has letters of commendation from the head of the UCLA program where he was an instructor, as well as letters from Chapman University where he taught extension classes for nine years. Mr. Cherniske has certificates for 171 hours of state approved Continuing Medical Education that he has completed since 1980 as well as course materials from the CME courses that he has taught.
I would also point out that his selection for a faculty position with the American College of Sports Medicine was not based on where he went to school, but rather his expertise in the field of nutrition and human performance. Likewise, the medical reviewers at Random House and Warner Books gave Cherniske high marks for accuracy and scientific insight. Since 1980, he has presented more than 6,000 hours of lectures to professional and lay audiences. Lectures that were subsequently published in scientific proceedings are listed in his CV, which he makes available to anyone who asks.
Still, skeptic choose to ignore these accomplishments and focus instead on membership in the National Academy of Research Biochemists, an organization that Cherniske joined in 1975 and subsequently left.
A relevant question is, why should one believe Stephen Barrett, a retir
