Product Description

This is the first modern textbook, written in the 21st century, to make explicit the many connections between physical organic chemistry and critical fields such as organometallic chemistry, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. In the latter part of the 20th century, the field of physical organic chemistry went through dramatic changes, with an increased emphasis on noncovalent interactions and their roles in molecular recognition, supramolecular chemistry, and biology; the development of new materials with novel structural features; and the use of computational methods. Contemporary chemists must be just as familiar with these newer fields as with the more established classical topics. This completely new landmark text is intended to bridge that gap. In addition to covering thoroughly the core areas of physical organic chemistry – structure and mechanism – the book will escort the practitioner of organic chemistry into a field that has been thoroughly updated . The foundations and applicabilities of modern computational methods are also developed. Written by two distinguished researchers in this field, Modern Physical Organic Chemistry can serve as a text for a year-long course targeted to advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students, as well as for a variety of shorter courses on selected aspects of the field. It will also serve as a landmark new reference text, and as an introduction to many of the more advanced topics of interest to modern researchers. An accompanying Student Solutions Manual will become available.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-10-09

This book is excellent. If you study Physical chemistry, you must have one. Most content in this book is quite new, that you can not find in other books.
I love it very much! Service in Amazon is very goog!

The book arrived on time in a good shape as I hoped it to be. I'm very glad I choose to purchase book from the seller and I will highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text for Grad School.......2006-12-09

I completed my first semester of Physical Organic chemistry using this textbook and I am pleased beyond words. The book is very well written, yet sophisticated enough to help advance new graduate students like myself to the level that our Professors understand concepts at. The problems at the end of the chapter are very useful and the answer guide (sold seperately) explains them quite well.

The book is also binded very solidly. The other people in my research group keep this text on their lab bookshelfs for reference and I have no doubt that I will do the same.

5 out of 5 stars The long wait is over..........2006-09-19

Phys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favourite subjects. As I graduated from school and college into university for my master's, I began to realise that it represents not so much a separate topic as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity, which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I reached the conclusion that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.

Unfortunately, all the classic phys org books until now have been of the 'pure' kind, focusing on mechanism and reactivity, but not discussing the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, especially for biological systems. My wait is over; Modern Physical Organic Chemistry by Dennis Dougherty and Eric Anslyn has completely and satisfactorily reinvented the phys org chem textbook. Now, one can look to a wholesome treatment of phys org as a multidisciplinary, fundamental, and exciting approach to both chemistry and biology. The book is worth its price, and covers the gamut of topics, including basic ones like mechanisms and bonding, but also is interspersed with lots of boxes and discussions explaining the applications of basic phys org concepts to host guest systems, proteins and nucleic acids, strained molecules, and materials science. Fantastic reference. It should make you a well-rounded chemist, which is the need of the day in today's era of collaborative research.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good book for school.......2006-12-24

I have this book for my Honors Chemistry class since the other college book was too complicated for what we were trying to accomplish. Whenever I opened it up, I found it IMMENSELY more helpful than most books that I have had about chemistry before. Most of the concepts are very easy to understand and are presented in a comprehensible manner. It starts off with a brief intro about the period table, elements, neutrons, protons, ect. and it ends up talking about each family (group number) on the periodic table.

Overall, I think that this is a good book to learn from. I give it 5 out of 5 stars because I believe it is a very nice book that one would be able to learn much from. As being a student, I found this book easy to understand and most of the concepts well presented. Overall: nice book!

Book Description

PRINCIPLES OF MODERN CHEMISTRY has dominated the honors and high mainstream general chemistry courses and is considered the standard for the course. The fifth edition is a substantial revision that maintains the rigor of previous editions but reflects the exciting modern developments taking place in chemistry today. Authors David W. Oxtoby and H. P. Gillis provide a unique approach to learning chemical principles that emphasizes the total scientific process?from observation to application?placing general chemistry into a complete perspective for serious-minded science and engineering students. Chemical principles are illustrated by the use of modern materials, comparable to equipment found in the scientific industry. Students are therefore exposed to chemistry and its applications beyond the classroom. This text is perfect for those instructors who are looking for a more advanced general chemistry textbook.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Who really needs this book?!?.......2007-04-23

I am really not sure for whom this book is intended. It presents things in an introductory tone, then proceeds to explain concepts as if the reader had a degree in physics, chemistry, and math.

There are three main problems with this book:
First, the book uses math to justify concepts, rather than the concepts justifying the math. Mathematical models are supposed to clarify and propose a logical way of explaining observed phenomena. Instead, Oxtoby will explain physical processes by describing the way in which a math formula or graph is constructed. While this refers back to historically founded rules of chemistry, it does nothing to explain the concept to a reader who has never seen the principles before.
The second problem is that there are barely ANY solved problems in the chapter text. Many of the end-chapter problems have no similarity at all to the few solved problems preceding them. Even intelligent students will be left confused by problems that lack any clear explanation.
The third problem is that the book is simply not well written. Like another reviewer said, make sure you have had a good nights sleep before reading Oxtoby's text. Explanations are often convoluted and do not try to build complexity from simply worded basic principles. In a way, the text should be twice as long, in order to clearly cover all the concepts presented.

Basically, this is an introductory chemistry text for students who have already had introductory chem.

1 out of 5 stars Horribly written book........2007-04-23

The concepts of this book are horribly constructed in convoluted sentences. Oxtoby may have been a genius, but he certainly could not teach, nor could he write in a manner that is both complete and simple.

Also, this book is full of backwards logic wherein Oxtoby continually argues that chemical principles are true because a graph or math equation says so, rather than explaining how the principle (through experimental evidence) leads to a mathematical understanding. And although this may "offer" a more advanced, or complete analysis of these properties than other books may, he consistently fails to provide an adequate fundamental explanation before going further.

This should have been ghost-written by someone more competent in clear, English prose.

5 out of 5 stars review.......2006-09-01

the book was in better condition that i thought! (although it was the wrong edition which was an honest mistake on my part) this seller really cares about her customers and is an honest and trustable person! thank you!

1 out of 5 stars It deserves 0 - if not negative stars.......2006-01-22

Note: I'm 18. I am using this book for my Chemistry class at Berkeley and I must say that this is a terrible book. It makes no sense and the problems in the back are very difficult because reading the book will not help you answer them. The book does cover a lot, however, because I cannot find a reference book to help me understand this book that covers the same material.

5 out of 5 stars Great chemistry textbook for college freshmen.......2005-03-05

Though many people would find this book distasteful, it is an extremely good source of information for both basic and intermediate chemistry. It is obviously not a book any student can handle, but with a good background in basic chemistry, the book will take the student a long way down the path of chemistry. The book uses colorful pictures and graphs to show the reader what the chemistry looks like in real life rather than just teaching the bare concept.

Chemistry is not about doing word problems; it is about actually seeing the results and learning to analyze these results. If you prefer to just get through chemistry and "learn" how to do problems without learning the real applications, choose another book. If you actually want to learn chemistry, this is the perfect book for you. As opposed to the average textbook that drags a subject matter on, this book is very concise and moves on after showing a derivation of an equation or one sample problem. Obviously this book may seem hard and seemingly impossible to comprehend at times, but a good recommendation is to get enough sleep before reading the book because it is much denser than other introduction to chemistry textbooks.

5 out of 5 stars General Chemistry Principles and Modern Applications.......2007-08-24

My daughter needed this book for college. It arrived in decent condition and was very affordable.

5 out of 5 stars For the more technical student who has had a touch of chemistry prior to tackling this.......2006-08-23

While there is a great deal of convergence about the concepts taught in a one year general chemistry course, the way those principles are taught, to what depth, and the kind of vocabulary used in teaching them varies from text to text. This allows the authors to focus their teaching in ways appropriate to different kinds of students.

This text is geared towards a one year course in general chemistry for students going on to careers in engineering, biology, and other technical fields. The vocabulary of the text is adapted to build up comfort with the technical terms of chemistry and familiarity in working with formulae rather than being content with intuitions about chemistry. It also has a nice addition of the actual people whose names are given to various laws and concepts in chemistry. When the name is presented there is also a picture and a sentence or two about who they were. I enjoyed this a great deal because it brings the text to life a bit more.

Pedagogically there are several nice helps that show the experience the authors have in teaching real life students and the kinds of misconceptions they tend to have. In the margins there are notes called "Keep in Mind" that help students avoid those common traps that come to easily to beginners in any field. There are well chosen diagrams, drawings, and pictures that aid in teaching rather than being content with decoration. The text also has notes entitled "Are You Wondering" that help students deal with questions that are probably arising in their mind as they are working through these concepts for the first time.

The problems in the back are grouped according to the concepts taught in the chapter and the problems numbered in red have the answers provided in the back of the book. They also provide an Integrative Example that shows the concepts in a more real life problem. After these come a series of integrative problems and advanced exercises. These are followed with feature problems and self-assessment exercises. When learning these concepts it is essential to do lots of work with them in order to be sure you understand them and to develop comfort with working with them. It will make learning later in the book easier and allow you to take more from the course after it is completed.

This is an excellent text for students who have had at least a bit of chemistry before tackling this course. And for technical students it will be more rewarding than other more basic texts even though they both cover similar ground. The more technical approach taken here will be more enriching to them.

    3 out of 5 stars So-so Book.......2006-12-13

I agree with many of the other reviewers: this book does a semi-decent job of explaining inorganic chemistry. The practice problems are okay, but the layout and organization can be improved upon. Nonetheless, most students have no choice when it comes to choosing a textbook.

1 out of 5 stars poor excuse for a chemistry book!!!.......2006-03-03

This book is required for my chemistry 1 course. I have taken 2 tests, and so far I have a "D" average in this class. The class is online, so I'm relying on this book to learn chemistry. As you can tell from my average, I have learned nothing from this book. I can't understand why colleges always require these VERY over-priced books that sucks. This book is the worst chemistry book that I have ever read - and I have read at least 7 chemistry books. Don't waste your money on this piece of garbage. If it wasn't so expensive, I would use it as a door-stop. By the way, the solutions manual that you can buy as a companion to this book sucks too.

1 out of 5 stars failed attempt at explaining chemistry.......2005-08-30

Incoherence is not an opinion but rather a fact when it comes to associating that word with this book. Petrucci although as a long history with writing chemistry textbooks, still has not been able to provide an adequate explanation to some of the MOST basic concepts of chemistry.

I think he is probably a brilliant chemist as the questions in this book can be challenging; I found them trivial however. This is not because I deem myself intelligent (that goes without saying :) but the fact of the matter is that I had better books to rely on when I was studying undergraduate chemistry.

Silberberg and Malone's Basic Concepts of Chemistry where to two that got me through. I initially was given this book to study from and I found some of the chapters deadly boring.

How Petrucci explains and expounds and Acid-Base, and Quantum Chemistry is satisfactory, however organic chemistry, the concept of the mole and redox are chapters that accentuate the inarticulate nature and the overall dullness of the book.

This is not good becase fundamentally chemical reactions are about the transference, absorption and dissipation of energy which is normally expressed as the "movement of electrons". One of the principle topics in chemistry which first introduces this is redox.

Secondly the concept of the Mole and basic calculations are required and if an individual has only this book to rely on then there is not much hope that the student would get a good enough grasp of what is at hand.

    Better Books:

Basic Concepts of Chemistry by Malone. A tried and tested book which takes a layman or (laywoman for that matter) and makes a chemist out of them.

Chemistry by Silberberg: very detailed explanations on various concepts.

Chemistry by Olmsted, if you are short on cash and need a book that does both of the above, then this is it. It is a fairy good book.

    1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2004-12-11

This book is the reason why half of the incoming premed population at tulane change to business majors. Please avoid at all cost. If you are assigned this book, go and buy it used so that you can just glimpse over it during class. Buy another better chemistry book and study from that.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Chemistry Book.......2004-11-25

First of all, good thing about this book is that it has lots of practice problems to work with. A lot of questions and exercise problems are sophiscated and challenging. Secondly, the explanations of the text are not confusing at all to me. The figures are well explained, too. ( I don't know why so many reviewers here say "confusing" about the book.)
It is overall a nice book. This book has a few calculation errors and typos but they shouldn't be a big problem for you to understand the concepts of chemistry.
Of course, I have seen better general chemistry books but this book does not confuse you much as long as you know how to read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of Electroplating. Editing needs work........2007-06-03

I have read through about a third of this book in an effort to update my electroplating knowledge and learn about some areas of electroplating I don't normally practice.

Generally speaking, this is an excellent review of the field and has been updated to include information on additive use in copper electroplating and developments in alloy electroplating for electronics.

On the downside, the editing of the book as a whole seems to be non-existent. The quality of individual chapters varies widely. This leaves me with the impression that Schlesinger and Paunovic only checked to see if the chapters were written in English and stopped at that point. Some chapters are a delight to read (like the chapter on palladium) while others are peppered with typographical errors, missing equations and such like things (e.g. the chapter on chromium). Also the varying values of Faraday's constant throughout the book indicates that no effort was made to enforce consistency of constants and units throughout the book. I was so irritated by this that I spent two or three hours finding out exactly what Faraday's constant should be (it's 96,485.3 Coulombs/mole). I found a good explanation of Faraday's constant on [...]

      Book Description

Until now, the literature has offered a rather limited approach to the use of fundamental kinetics and their application to catalytic reactions. Subsequently, this book spans the full range from fundamentals of kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis via modern experimental and theoretical results of model studies to their equivalent large-scale industrial production processes. The result is key knowledge for students at technical universities and professionals already working in industry.

"...such an enterprise will be of great value to the community, to professionals as well as graduate and undergraduate students attempting to move into the field of modern catalysis and kinetics. I strongly recommend you publish this book based on the proposal."
—Prof. Dr. G. A. Samorjai, University of California

"Both authors are well respected specialists, with a very long record of original top-quality work and an international reputation. A book from these authors will be considered an authoritative piece of work, I definitely support this project and I am looking forward to use the book when published."
—Prof. Dr. D. E. Resasco, University of Oklahoma

"I wholly support the proposed project. The authors are very competent young colleagues and there is a real need for such a textbook."
