Product Description
This is the first modern textbook, written in the 21st century, to make explicit the many connections between physical organic chemistry and critical fields such as organometallic chemistry, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. In the latter part of the 20th century, the field of physical organic chemistry went through dramatic changes, with an increased emphasis on noncovalent interactions and their roles in molecular recognition, supramolecular chemistry, and biology; the development of new materials with novel structural features; and the use of computational methods. Contemporary chemists must be just as familiar with these newer fields as with the more established classical topics. This completely new landmark text is intended to bridge that gap. In addition to covering thoroughly the core areas of physical organic chemistry structure and mechanism the book will escort the practitioner of organic chemistry into a field that has been thoroughly updated . The foundations and applicabilities of modern computational methods are also developed. Written by two distinguished researchers in this field, Modern Physical Organic Chemistry can serve as a text for a year-long course targeted to advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students, as well as for a variety of shorter courses on selected aspects of the field. It will also serve as a landmark new reference text, and as an introduction to many of the more advanced topics of interest to modern researchers. An accompanying Student Solutions Manual will become available.

Excellent book.......2007-10-09
This book is excellent. If you study Physical chemistry, you must have one. Most content in this book is quite new, that you can not find in other books.
I love it very much! Service in Amazon is very goog!
Slow shipping and handling.......2007-09-19
The book is in fine condition, I just had to wait longer than I have ever waited for a book in my life.
Excellent.......2007-01-04
The book arrived on time in a good shape as I hoped it to be. I'm very glad I choose to purchase book from the seller and I will highly recommend it.
Outstanding Text for Grad School.......2006-12-09
I completed my first semester of Physical Organic chemistry using this textbook and I am pleased beyond words. The book is very well written, yet sophisticated enough to help advance new graduate students like myself to the level that our Professors understand concepts at. The problems at the end of the chapter are very useful and the answer guide (sold seperately) explains them quite well.
The book is also binded very solidly. The other people in my research group keep this text on their lab bookshelfs for reference and I have no doubt that I will do the same.
The long wait is over..........2006-09-19
Phys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favourite subjects. As I graduated from school and college into university for my master's, I began to realise that it represents not so much a separate topic as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity, which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I reached the conclusion that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.
Unfortunately, all the classic phys org books until now have been of the 'pure' kind, focusing on mechanism and reactivity, but not discussing the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, especially for biological systems. My wait is over; Modern Physical Organic Chemistry by Dennis Dougherty and Eric Anslyn has completely and satisfactorily reinvented the phys org chem textbook. Now, one can look to a wholesome treatment of phys org as a multidisciplinary, fundamental, and exciting approach to both chemistry and biology. The book is worth its price, and covers the gamut of topics, including basic ones like mechanisms and bonding, but also is interspersed with lots of boxes and discussions explaining the applications of basic phys org concepts to host guest systems, proteins and nucleic acids, strained molecules, and materials science. Fantastic reference. It should make you a well-rounded chemist, which is the need of the day in today's era of collaborative research.

The end-all be-all of photochem.......2004-03-09
I took a number of chem classes with Nick Turro and plain and simple, the man radiates brilliance. Modern Molecular Photochemistry has been the de facto standard for photochem since the 1960s and loses none of it's excellence today. Good book for any undergrad/grad doing Chem/ChemE-related work. Very useful, very relevant, and just plain excellent.
for the novice or advanced photochemist/spectroscopist.......2002-10-22
This is the first book to read on organic photophysics. Turro is a wonderful teacher; the introductory chapters of this book clearly explain basic concepts that other books skip entirely. I would particularly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the field and/or timid about physical chemistry, although it is certainly appropriate for more advanced students/professionals as well. The advanced reader can skip the first few chapters and still find plenty of useful reference material on energy transfer, photochemical reactions, spectroscopy, etc. There are other photochemistry textbooks available but the price makes this one the best value.
This book was with me all the time when I was in school.......1999-04-09
Excellent. My leisure reading as well as serious references
Book Description
Quantum theory is one the most important and successful theories of modern physical science. It has been estimated that its principles form the basis for about 30 per cent of the world's manufacturing economy. This is all the more remarkable because quantum theory is a theory that nobody
understands. The meaning of Quantum Theory introduces science students to the theory's fundamental conceptual and philosophical problems, and the basis of its non-understandability. It does this with the barest minimum of jargon and very little mathematics in the main text. Readers wishing to delve
more deeply into the theory's mathematical subtleties can do so in an extended series of appendices. The book brings the reader up to date with the results of new experimental tests of quantum weirdness and reviews the latest thinking on alternative interpretations, the frontiers of quantum
cosmology, quantum gravity and potential application of this weirdness in computing, cryptography and teleportation.

A light on Uncertainty.......2006-03-19
This was just the tonic I needed to get past the perceived barrier of mystery surrounding micro physics. Jim Baggott writing is clear and the subject is well organized. I feel I am no longer ignorant of this amazing field.

Book Description
Modern Synthetic Methodologies Toward Glycomimetics contains 10 chapters describing the syntheses of natural and non-natural glycomimetics using modern transition metal catalyzed reactions. This book also contains several experimental details allowing the readers to get familiar with such intricate reactions using complex alkylidene carbenoids, samarium diodide, dicobalt octacarbonyl alkyne cyclotrimerization, and the like. The descriptions of biologically active carbohydrates are elegantly detailed. A new solution-phase glycopeptide synthesis using unprotected glycosyl amino acids as phase-tags is also described. Important strategies into the design of complex sialic acid C-saccharides, aryl C-glycosides, and conformationally restricted analogs of the important sialyl Lewis X are discussed. Tethering of carbohydrate residues through ester bonds and applications of the Tebbe's methylenation and either ring closing metathesis or intramolecular C-glycosidations are used to provide novel carbohydrate analogs.

Book Description
This monograph deals with the effects of reactant spatial correlations arising in the course of basic bimolecular reactions describing defect recombination, energy transfer and exciton annihilation in condensed matter. These effects lead to the kinetics considered
abnormal from the standard chemical kinetics point of view. Numerous bimolecular reaction regimes and conditions are analysed in detail. Special attention is paid to the development and numerous applications of a novel, many-point density (MPD) formalism, which is based on Kirkwood's superposition approximation used for decoupling three-particle correlation functions.
The book demonstrates that incorporation of the reaction-induced spatial correlations of
similar reactants (e.g., vacancy-vacancy) leads to the development of an essentially non-Poisson spectrum of reactant density fluctuations. This can completely change the kinetics at longer times since it no longer obeys the law of mass action. The language of the
correlation lengths and
critical exponents similar to physics of critical phenomena is used instead. A relation between MPD theory and synergistics is discussed. The validity of the theorem giving a critical complexity for the two-step reactions exhibiting self-organization phenomena is questioned. Theoretical results are illustrated by numerous experimental data.
