Book Description
Organic Structure Analysis is an ideal text for upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in organic spectroscopy. It provides students with the background necessary to effectively apply spectroscopic data in establishing features of molecular structure. Unique in its coverage, it is the only text that emphasizes strategies, interpretation, modern techniques, and problem solving. The text's major aim is to show how spectra can be efficiently examined in order to identify a molecule's major structural elements. It focuses on four techniques which are used on a day-to-day basis by most organic chemists: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectroscopy (MS), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS). Each chapter provides different perspectives on using spectroscopic data in a step-by-step process to establish structural features such as an overall carbon framework; the presence and location of functional groups; the regiochemistry and stereochemistry of substituents; and, finally, the absolute stereochemistry of chiral centers. Recent advances in NMR and MS have changed the way these components are introduced and used in organic spectroscopy courses. Unlike similar texts, this book provides ample, up-to-date coverage of the latest developments in NMR and MS techniques. Organic Structure Analysis adopts a practical approach to the subject which emphasizes building experience; the authors recognize that a combination of problem solving, access to data from models, and understanding the rules of spectral interpretation helps students to build expertise in structure determination from spectra. It outlines elements of theory, but with an emphasis on those directly relevant to spectral interpretation. The text is divided into three major sections; the first section provides extensive coverage of each of the individual methods, the second section illustrates how the strategies of organic structure are actually applied in ten problems whose solutions are provided, and the third section consists of fifty unsolved problems which range from simple monofunctional compounds to complex natural products.

Organic Spectroscopy Made Clear.......2001-08-24
Crews is not a hardcore treatise of the subject. It does not cover the quantum mechanics behind spectroscopy and the complicated mathematical underneath the concept. Instead it discusses the fundamentals and results of such quantum calculations which apply to identification of organic compounds. Basic concepts of nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, ultra violet spectroscopy are thoroughly covered with examples and charts. Crews is a splendidly-written, straight-forward work that would be suitable for advanced undergraduates who had finished at least one year of organic chemistry, for those who pursue chemical research, and entering grad students.

Book Description
This introductory textbook covers all the major spectroscopic techniques that cover the derivation of structural information from spectroscopic data. It incorporates over 200 carefully selected problems that are graded to develop and consolidate the students understanding of organic spectroscopy and to develop an understanding of how structures are derived.
This, the third edition has been thoroughly revised and updated and reflects the many developments in this area. It includes over 50 new problems and presents challenging examples that have been carefully selected to include all-important structural features and to emphasise connectivity arguments.
More emphasis on techniques is included in the problems and the advanced NMR topics section is expanded in the areas of decoupling and applications of the nuclear overhauser effect (nOe).
Customer Reviews:
A good practical book:.......2002-05-20
This book is an excellent practical approach to common problems of solving structures. I think it's really good.
It's a good supplement.......2000-04-09
I had to buy this book for a Spectroscopy class, and I came to Amazon looking to see if there is an answer book too (which i don't think exists). Don't let the book discription fool you... The questions are "graded" meaning they progressively get more difficult. The questions are NOT answered, which would have been very helpful. If you are looking for a VERY BASIC explination to spectral chemistry, and a bunch of problems, get this book. If you want to really know what spectral chem is all about try "Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds".
Book Description
This volume presents in the form of texts, tables, charts and graphs a modern compilation of spectroscopic reference data for IR, UV/Vis, 1H- and 13C-NMR, MS (incl. prototype spectra of almost every important class of organic compounds and spectra of MALDI and FAB matrix materials) and is intended as a short textbook and a hands-on guide for interpreting experimental spectral data and elucidating the chemical structure of the respective compound behind it. The concise texts include special chapters on fragmentation rules in mass spectrometry and on currently used multipulse and 2-D NMR techniques. The book is primarily designed for students to be used during courses and exercises. The use of the book requires only basic knowledge of spectroscopic techniques, but is structured in such a way that it will support practitioners routinely faced with the task of interpreting such spectral information, and it will serve as data reference for specialists in the fields.
Customer Reviews:
very useful!.......2007-05-13
this book contains a lot of information, but organized in such a way that is easy to find what you need.
Structure Determination of Organic Compounds: Tables of Spectral Data.......2007-02-10
The book was in perfect condition and was sent at time.
I will agree that my first experience with Amazon was an excellent one.
Thank you
My Spectroscopic Crutch.......2006-10-22
I'm taking an organic spectroscopy course for my graduate program in Organic chemistry and my exams consist of MS, IR, proton NMR, and C13 NMR spectra.
This book is absolutely incredible. It gives you chemical shifts for nearly every conceivable structure for proton and C13 NMR and it also gives you absorptions for the IR frequencies of known functional groups. It has helped me many times in trying to determine the structure of an unknown compound.
Like the other reviewer said, this book is the bible of organic spectroscopy. I see it being used all the time in the organic research lab when graduate students are trying to figure out what they synthesized.
Organic spectroscopy bible.......2004-03-02
This is the best organic spectroscopy book I have ever found. If you have to take any kind of organic spec class, this is definitely a must.
A must-have.......2002-02-13
If you are taking a class in organic spectroscopy or use NMR all the time in your lab, then this book is a must. Gives you table after table of chemical shifts for C-13 NMR, H1-NMR, IR, Mass Spec, and UV/Vis. It also comes with a very useful NMR Predictor CD.
Book Description
This practical guide explains how and why the architecture of molecules can be determined by analysis of the diffraction patterns produced by X-ray crystallography. Thoroughly illustrated, it is intended for nonspecialists who want to understand the fundamentals of this widely used method of structure determination. The new second edition has been revised and expanded to take account of the many recent advances in the field.

Book Description
The primary purpose of this book is to help you understand what is going on in Fourier Transform (FT) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Modern life is now very largely life with "black boxes" that carry warning labels: "No user-serviceable parts inside." Many find black boxes to be quite acceptable, at least as long as they work. But how willing should we be to accept black-box analyses without some understanding of how those analyses were obtained? NMR spectrometers are like "black boxes" in that they offer many standardized procedures, but it can be dangerous to the quality of your data if you rely slavishly on such procedures without understanding how and why the proper parameter choices are critical. The scope of this book is broad rather than deep with the intention of providing helpful insight. Much can be understood in a more qualitative way and that is the approach taken here. For those few areas where a quantitative approach is needed, ! simple mathematics will usually suffice.
This book has been used as a text for "Basic FT-NMR Spectroscopy" at the California Institute of Technology for the last ten years.

NMR from a master.......2005-08-13
Jack Roberts (Caltech) is one of the pioneers of the use of NMR in Organic Chemistry. In his memoirs, published by the American Chemical Society, he fondly recalled his initiation and rise in the field. Now in this book, which is a labour of love, one can see that fondness for NMR translated into action. Very few books on NMR (and there are almost hundreds of them) have such an authoritarian and clear, yet informal and engaging tone of presentation. Using the right kind of language at the right time, Roberts guides the reader through the thicket of methods, principles, techniques, and caveats, that make NMR the most important method for structure determination and much more, in Chemistry. The first few chapters are really outstanding, giving the reader a penetrating but simplified insight into the basic workings of magnetic resonance. In later chapters, advanced topics and 2D methods are tackled with the same kind of gusto and determination. Throughout the book, the focus is chemical, as it's the chemist who has always been the greatest beneficiary of this technique. Problems at the end of every chapter illuminate concepts, and ballpark estimates of parameters present a comprehensive picture of every technique and process. My only gripe, if any, is that I would probably prefer other books (Claridge, Derome, Lambert) for more detailed discussions of NOE and NOESY.
Roberts's book is one of the few NMR books that will completely do the job of teaching the basics of NMR to interested students and scientists. And it's worth it. After all, he is a master.

Book Description
The analysis of protein function is a vital step in the characterization of any newly discovered protein. This new edition brings up to date the techniques used, and presents experimental procedures that can be performed in the average laboratory without recourse to highly specialised
equipment. The protocols will be of use to both experienced and novice researchers and are accompanied by background information, hints and tips, and troubleshooting guides to ensure successful elucidation of protein function.
Book Description
This book is divided in two parts. Part I provides a brief but accurate summary of all the basic ideas, theories, methods, and conspicuous results of structure analysis and molecular modelling of the condensed phases of organic compounds: quantum chemistry, the intermolecular potential, force
field and molecular dynamics methods, structural correlation, and thermodynamics. This Part is written in simple and intuitive form, so that the reader may easily find there the essential background for the discussions in the second part. Part II exposes the present status of studies in the
analysis, categorization, prediction and control, at a molecular level, of intermolecular interactions in liquids, solutions, mesophases, and crystals. The main focus is here on the links between energies, structures, and chemical or physical properties.
