4 out of 5 stars Sensational little book, beautifully done.......2004-06-16

Really a little gem of a book. It's small enough to fit comfortably in your hands and it's just stuffed with information and tasty graphics. The Art Director must have been giggling with delight, the book is really a showpiece. The colorful photos jump off the page and the text is handled in the usual effortless DK manner. Even if you have zero interest in fish, this book is a joy to page through. Beautifully put together.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Refference.......2004-06-15

This is a good quick reference guide & has has a good collection of species & varieties. You couldn't raise any fish from the information in this book - but it certainly makes choosing those right for you aquarium a little easier.

      3 out of 5 stars Ok for the price or a - - 3 stars.......2003-12-14

Like all DK books this little (72 page) book is very pretty and well organized. Unfortunately it provides little info and also misleads the buyer. At first glance it appears to cover 101 fish ("101 Aquarium Fish" is in large print) but only 40 fish are covered and 5 of these are just different types of goldfish. Of the remaining 61 "Essential Tips" included are: Tip #61-Clubs, discusing joining a club, and tip #45 Choosing Prepacked Food, showing photos of different food types ie flakes (2 types shown), pellets, tablets etc.

      2 out of 5 stars Needs a companion book.......2003-06-08

While this is a good quick reference guide, I have found that I have needed another book for most things. This would probably be good for kids as long as parents have another source for more detailed reference.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, not enough info.......2002-11-05

This is a handy little guidebook that features very high-quality photographs (it's another DK book) of just about every aquarium fish you are likely to encounter. It is useful primarily for those looking to distinguish their Five-Banded Barbs from their Checker Barbs or their Madagascar Rainbowfish from their Siamese Tigerfish - i.e. it is a book for fish nerds. I do recommend this book for the enthusiast and the beginner alike, however the beginner should not rely on this book alone as it does not provide nearly enough information on setting up the aquarium, choosing compatible fishes, and trouble-shooting. My main criticism is that while the design and layout of the book, and the large, clear color photos of the fish, makes it a pleasure to read, it provides only very basic information about each fish. For some unknown reason, the critically important subject of water chemistry and temperature is practically ignored. I also find it disturbing that the author does not really indicate which fishes are good for the beginner, and which are more fragile, and suitable only for more advanced aquarists. This is an unfortunate exclusion given the fact that so many fish languish and die in tanks owned by inexperienced people who lack the knowledge to properly choose and care for them. If you're looking for information you can really use, there is not much point in learning to distinguish between 500 different varieties of fishes, but not knowing which of those fishes you would be most likely to be able to keep successfully (taking into account such factors as your level of skill/experience, local water chemistry, the size of the tank etc.). Still, it's worth a look.

      Book Description

The quantity, diversity and origins of seafood imports to Australia have increased dramatically in recent decades, and importers now supply more than 60% of the commercial market in Australia.

Australia's 225 imported seafood species are superbly documented in this user-friendly and comprehensive identification guide. Colour photographs, protein fingerprints, and fish fillet features are provided for an amazing variety of seafoods: finfishes, crustaceans, molluscs, jellyfishes, sea cucumbers and seaweeds. It is an easy-to-use guide to all major seafood species imported, including fish fillets, which link each species to its approved, national marketing name.

This companion volume to the Australian Seafood Handbook — an Identification Guide to Domestic Species is an essential reference for all importers, fishmongers, processors and seafood consumers.

5 out of 5 stars Essential guide for the best seafood from Australia........2001-04-25

This book is a must have if you frequently find yourself lucky enough to enjoy Australian seafood. It features almost all of the commonly available species you are likely to find in a restaurant or a fishmonger.

This book enables you to plan your meals- it mentions eating qualities for each species, and oil contents so you can actually "get the good oil"! It also features latin names, habitats and similar species guides.

Recommended marketing names are also used which is essential for Australian exporters. It is recommend to the novice fish eater and the professional seafood exporter. You can also get this in a laminated version which I suppose you could safely take to sea with.

Hard to find, even in Australia but well worth the hunt. Fantastic photography throughout of the whole fish and fillet.

This book came highly recommended by my PhD advisor and has turned out to be my bible. Book Description

The primary purpose of this book is to provide a range of tested BASIC programs, which are useful for solving some of the problems frequently encountered in fisheries science and related resource assessment disciplines. Taken together, the ``package'' of programs may be considered to be a system, hence the name Fisheries Science Applications Systems (FSAS) which has been adopted as the title of the package.

In the first chapter, an overview of the FSAS system and its components is presented. The second chapter is a tutorial on data entry, data editing, and the use of a typical application program. The remaining text summarizes each application program, describing the analyses it performs and providing citations to the fisheries literature.

The programs are considered to be of potential value to the practicing fisheries scientist who has access to a personal computer. In addition, they will be of value to fisheries scientists and managers

          Book Description

A major goal of hearing research is to explain how the human auditory system normally functions and to help identify the causes of and treatments for hearing impairment. Experimental approaches to this research make use of animal models that are developed, evaluated and validated to determine what can be generalized from one species to another. By investigating the structures, physiological functions and hearing capabilities of various species, comparative hearing research establishes the biological and evolutionary context for such models. This volume brings together our current understanding of the auditory systems of two of the major vertebrate classes, fish and amphibians. It overcomes the differing theoretical and experimental paradigms that underlie most work on these groups and treats both fish and amphibians together in most chapters in order to address broader comparative issues.

              Book Description

Recent decades have witnessed strong declines in fish stocks around the globe, amid growing concerns about the impact of fisheries on marine and freshwater biodiversity. Fisheries biologists and managers are therefore increasingly asking about aspects of ecology, behaviour, evolution and biodiversity that were traditionally studied by people working in very separate fields. This has highlighted the need to work more closely together, in order to help ensure future success both in management and conservation. The Handbook of Fish Biology and Fisheries has been written by an international team of scientists and practitioners, to provide an overview of the biology of freshwater and marine fish species together with the science that supports fisheries management and conservation. The first volume, subtitled Fish Biology, reviews a broad variety of topics from evolutionary relationships and global biogeography to physiology, recruitment, life histories, genetics, foraging, reproductive behaviour and community ecology. Volume two, subtitled Fisheries, builds on the material from volume one, focusing on a wide range of topics including the history of fisheries science, methods of capture, marketing, economics, major models used in stock assessments and forecasting, ecosystem impacts, marine protected areas and conservation.Together, these books present the state of the art in our understanding of fish biology and fisheries and will serve as valuable references for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fisheries science. They will also be useful to researchers who need up-to-date reviews of topics that impinge on their fields, and decision makers who need to appreciate the scientific background for management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.
