Book Description

#1 bestselling author Joyce Meyer reveals the seven most common obstacles to living a happy life-and the ways to triumph over them. Throughout the Bible,from 'make a joyful noise,' to 'rejoice in the Lord always,'believers are encouraged to be joyful. Not only does joy foster good feelings, but it also promotes strength and health. However, the stress of daily life often makes joy difficult to come by. Now, Joyce Meyer offers numerous examples from Scripture to remind readers that God promises a joyful attitude to anyone open to receiving it. She examines the seven pitfalls that prevent most people from living a joyful life and offers solutions to overcoming each of them. Then, in her honest and straightforward style, she encourages readers to make the decision to enjoy life-not just once in a while or when things are going well, but in every circumstance, every day.

4 out of 5 stars Meeting Myers.......2007-05-02

Upon reading this book as part of my Church's Women's Ministry "Book of the Month", I was well-pleased with the basic approach, simplistic illustrations, and personal sharing of a well-loved personality. Mrs. Meyers is commended for "making plain" the challenges of life and how we contribute to the absence of joy that hinders the Christian walk. When placed before us for honest review, the examples, suggestions and advice call for change and/or the acquiring of new perspectives on "things" and one's response to "things" that occur. The book is recommended for group study and as a companion to Christian self-help programs.

5 out of 5 stars Seven things that steal your joy.......2006-10-15

This is an excellent book. Joyce Meyer made it so simple and easy to understand. She used her own personal experiences which makes you feel that her recommendations are realistic and effective.You can totally relate to this book.I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful for Christians.......2006-06-14

This book was a wonderful help to me. It's written simply so the important concepts can really sink in. She uses a lot of Scripture which is something I appreciate. I don't think a non-Christian would gain much from this book, but I would recommend it for any Christian.

5 out of 5 stars If I am feeling sad or defeated..........2006-01-25

If I am feeling sad or defeated, I put my Sony headphones on and Joyce talks to me. I know she is just reading her book, preaching her message, but the way she speaks, it really feels like she is talking directly to me, teaching me exactly the lesson I need to learn, exactly when I need to hear it. The timing of her messages in my life can only be described as supernatural. Many times the message is so right on, so clear, and such a relief, it reduces me to tears of joy. I am certain that God is using her to speak to me, and deliver the exact help I need, right when I need it. The fact is that my situation has not changed(much), but with God's help, I have been changed. God is so good.

5 out of 5 stars Helps you regain your joy!!.......2005-09-25

This book helps you regain the joy that you thought you lost by pointing out the ways in which it was stolen. Too often as believers we get into a "rut" and we just don't "feel" like being joyful. So many things come at us and we begin to lose sight of God because of all the stuff piling up on top of us. This book helped me understand why I was in that "rut" and how to get out of it. No, the christian walk is not easy, but at least it can be joyful if we will stand strong in faith. If you feel like you have fallen it the "rut" of unjoyfulness, I suggest you buy this book and learn how to come back into the light before it is too late!

5 out of 5 stars Learning about each other.......2007-01-10

You will definitely need the actual book to use the workbooks. My fiance and I have been working through the lessons and are about halfway through the workbooks. The best thing about the exercises is that there are so many things about my future wife that I didn't know, especially in regards to how she thinks and feels about certain aspects of life. We are becoming closer as we're beginning to understand each other at a deeper level. I'm learning more about how women communicate and how they really aren't able to come to grips with exactly how we operate either. The exercises vary from childhood influences to budgeting to love languages. We look forward to each time we work through the lessons. I highly recommend them for any couple preparing for marriage.

5 out of 5 stars The Seven Next Words of Christ.......2007-09-23

To found this book to be exceptional and encouraging. I read it after the Easter season and it continues to help me keep that glorious miracle in my thoughts. Some artist at my church created scenes from the seven last sayings of Christ from the cross and so this book seemed to be a good thing to follow those inspiring works of art. Shane Stanford is truly a talented writer and can help anyone that is looking for hope through the resurrection story. Martha Beadle

5 out of 5 stars Our Savior Was Jewish! This Book Needs To Be Read.......2007-01-16

Jesus was Jewish not Christian! I have loved my Christian Jesus for as long as I can remember but now I am realizing that the Jesus I thought I knew actually did Jewish customs while on earth because He was a Jew. Christians need this book to understand that our God is a Jewish God. It doesnt change the love He has for us it just helps us to understand Him better. Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2006-11-18

This book is the best for an overview of the 7 festivals described in Leviticus 23. I use this book for teaching classes on the Festivals and have found it the most comprehensive book for this purpose. It not only describes the Fesitivals, but gives the historic and prophetic significance of the Festivals. It is easy to read and is an excellent reference.

3 out of 5 stars Fair, but faulty, analysis of the Jewish Festivals of the Torah.......2006-02-17

First, please know that I agree wholeheartedly with the most basic premise of Chumney's book--that the Festivals commanded in the Torah point to Christ--and that it is not my intention to disparage the premise of this book or its basic theology. On the contrary, I agree with it VERY much.

Those things said, I must regretfully give this book and "it's ok" rating (3 stars) rather than something better. In fact, I would be more likely to give it two stars than four. Before you disagree with me, please read the rest of my review.

--------------------------------------------------
Since this is such an unmanageably long review, and most of you won't read it, I offer this as perhaps the best piece of advice I can give: the author has posted his book at his site, www.hebroots.org. (You'll have to scroll down to the heading "Books by Eddie Chumney") Before buying, perhaps you should check there to see if my review is correct.
--------------------------------------------------

As already stated, I actually agree with the premise of Chumney's book. Sadly, Chumney falls far short of actually providing a work that successfully and persuasively proves that point. There are enough faults in the book to seriously detract from his effectiveness as an author. But I'll talk about the good stuff first.

(1) Chumney organizes the book in a manageable format, which makes for easy reference. You can easily re-find points made in the book, because it is organized by headings. One can easily thumb through any given chapter, reading chapter headings only, and get the gist of what Chumney is trying to say.

(2) Chumney's premise, again, is a good one. As a Christian, I find it to be amazingly profound to study just how deeply the Torah (Pentateuch) and the rest of the Tanakh (Old Testament) point to Christ--particularly the Torah. Upon study, it appears that the pages are literally dripping with allegories, portraits, and details about Christ. Further, I agree with Chumney that in order to understand the parallels with which the Torah is rife, one must study and understand the Jewish customs surrounding the practices depicted there.

(3) The book is succinct, with a generally large amount of scripture references to keep the reader informed of where Chumney gets his information. Thus, one can easily read this book, and in most cases, can corroborate what Chumney says. I have obviously qualified this statement, and will discuss that qualification shortly.

After talking about the good things in Chumney's book, I now turn to the things which I find to seriously detract from the book's effectiveness.

(1) Poor writing. Yes. As already stated twice, I AGREE with the general premise of this book. However, the writing is sub-par. There is inadequate use of synonyms, varied writing style, and developed rhetoric. I'm not just being picky--I just know good writing when I see it, and this unfortunately does not qualify. I'll give an example.
Chumney SERIOUSLY encumbers his work by parenthetically including transliterated Hebrew words. For examble, every time Chumney uses the word "Messiah" it is followed by the Hebrew transliteration, as in the following example:

The festivals of the L-rd...were given...so His people
could understand the coming of the Messiah (Mashiach)...
(Chapter 1, page 1, first sentence.)

On that very page, which only includes two small paragraphs, the same convention of using the "(Mashiach)" after "Messiah" is used two more times. I can understand Chumney's desire to use Hebrew words in a work of this type, especially since he expects a part of his audience to be Jewish. Very well. Then use the Hebrew words. Don't use both, throughout the entire book. If he wanted to use the Hebrew words, he should swap the order and say "Mashiach (Messiah)" the first time he uses the word, then use "Mashiach" the rest of the book, and could easily include a glossary for quick reference. As it is, the parentheticals get REAL distracting, REAL quick. In the first five pages of the book, there are no less than 44 such parentheticals...and the quantity does not go down throughout the book.

(2) Poor logic. The general purpose of Chumney's book is to be persuasive. However, he makes his argument much LESS persuasive by making rather large leaps of faith...in both theology and in logic. While I noted above, in the positives, that Chumney includes biblical cites for his assertions in most places, those cites do NOT always support his claim. Take the following example, found on page 14:

The Bible says that the L-rd's right hand destroyed
the Egyptians (Exodus [Shemot] 15:6, 12). The right
hand is a term for the Messiah, Yeshua (Psalms
[Tehillim] 44:3; 48:10; 63:8; 74:10-11; 89:13; 98:1;
110:1; 118:16; 138:7; Isaiah [Yeshayahu] 41:10; 53:1-5;
62:8; Acts 2:32-36; 5:31-21; Hebrews 1:3.

Well, I won't insult you by going through each passage, but suffice it to say that if you look up EVERY one of the passages above in the long string he includes, you will find that NOT ONE of them refers directly to the Messiah, but refers to one of two things: (1) the arm of the Lord by which he defends his people and accomplishes victory for them, and (2) the figurative place of status at God's right hand. While Christ is identified as occupying this position many times, the right arm of God itself is not a direct reference to Christ, unless you do a fair amount of text-adulteration. Chumney then goes on to make the ridiculous logical jump that since Christ is the "arm of the Lord" then this explains why it is custom today for Jews to eat the shankbone, or "arm" of the lamb. Seems an absurd stretch to me.

I'll include one more unfaithful reading of the text. In Acts 1:6, Christ's Apostles asked Christ when he would restore the kingdom to Israel. Chumney reads this to mean asking when God would re-unite the Gentiles with the Jews. This is very far from the most natural reading of the text, which suggests simply that the Apostles expected Christ, upon his resurrection from the dead, to establish a temporal kingdom. I invite you to read it for yourself.

(3) Chumney simply doesn't support his assertions of fact, or of theology on way too many points. In a piece of literature like this one, it is imperative that the author support his propositions with scripture or other authors, at least where possible. Failure to do so raises serious questions as to the validity of the author's arguments. I invite you to read more scholarly works, such as those written by Alfred Edersheim (dated, but still very good) and compare.

Bottom line: decent, but before you buy, read it online at the above link.

1 out of 5 stars Edward Chumney's version of the seven festivals.......2004-06-04

This is a gentile perspective of the Jewish perspective. It is too cumbersome to read to the end. The transliterations are not accurate. It is definitely not something that a Jewish person would be able to get through, whether a believer or not a believer in Messiah. It is better to write from your own personal experiences and culture. When you try to enter into someone else's culture, it is not the same.

I personally want to see the Jewish people come to believe that Yeshua is the Messiah and I at the same time want to see the Gentile people come to believe that Yeshua(Jesus) is the Messiah. Each are to remain in the culture and religious background that they came from minus the idolotries and other sins in their lives.

An understanding of the entire Bible is very important. A person does not need to become a Bible scholar to be saved. But to know how to live before and unto the L-rd is very important. the feast of Israel are a part of a Jewish person's lifestyle and a Jewish Believer's lifestyle and a Gentile Believer's lifestyle. Each must know that the central part of each feast is G-d and He will impress upon you how to walk before Him.

5 out of 5 stars onenewman.......2004-04-26

This is an excellant book. Eddie Chumney writes very methodically which makes it easy to remember and understand. For anyone interested in their Hebraic Roots this one is the best in regard to understanding the Bibical past, present and future. All your questions will be answered as you read this book.
This book also uncovers milleniums of misunderstanding. It is worth the time to read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Becoming A Jew.......2006-02-24

Fantastic information on how a person learns to be a Jew. How parents raise their children with the values and culture to be a Jew. Great information.

4 out of 5 stars Incidental traits- not the fundamental Jewish teaching .......2005-05-10

This is an effort to teach people how to be successful through principles derived from Jewish life and experience. Its emphasis is on the business, and financial success. It teaches seven principles, 1) To understand that learning is portable 2) Take care of your own and they will take care of you 3) Successful people are professionals and entrepreneurs 4) Be selectively extravagant but prudently frugal 5) Celebrate individualism and promote creativity 6) Have something to prove. A drive to success. 7) Develop your verbal confidence.
The author claims that these principles can be learned by anyone, and thus his argument is that these traits are cultural and not genetic.
The work does not explain the many Jews like myself who are not financially successful.
The writer does however have a sense of humor and should be valued for that. The advice if it could be taken, which is always the problem with ' advice' probably would help people become more successful.
I would just point out that the traits cited by the author are incidental ( except perhaps the one of caring for others) to fundamental Jewish religious teachings. Those teachings emphasize walking in the way of God, by being kind and considerate to others. And they also emphasize working to improve the world and make it better for all. Perhaps these teachings too have something to do with financial ' success'
I would also make another point though. The Jewish tradition teaches the truly wealthy person is the one ' satisfied with his lot'. This is a contradiction of one of the principles listed above.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Motivational/Inspirational Book.......2004-07-16

If you have an interest in becoming successful give this book a read. It takes no time to complete and gives plenty of suggestions to choose from on how to improve yourself professionally and that you can make a difference. For the Jewish Community it should be a required read. Several examples of how well off the Jewish Community is is illustrated in the book in order to explain how they have become so wealthy as a group. As a Gentile I found it to be enlightening as to how and what some of the differences are between the two religions just on a busniess level alone. You always think of the religious differences but not necessarily the other components of our lives, i.e. success in the business world. Please keep in mind this is not a religious book but rather a business book with stories of how the Jewish community is so successful in the world. Now we all know what the phenomenon is.

3 out of 5 stars Title is misleading.......2004-04-20

This book is filled with interesting statistics but there is very little information on how others can apply the seven "keys" to their own lives. If you're interested in knowing the statistical information about the success of the Jews, this book is for you. However, if you're looking for a "how to" book on achieving financial success, I recommend you keep looking. Peronally, I enjoyed reading this book and I found the statistics truly remarkable.

2 out of 5 stars save your time and money.......2003-10-28

I am from Los Angeles and I am half-Jewish. When I first purchased this book, I thought I was in for a treat. However, I was sorely disappointed. The author filled this book with pointless measures and statistics that seemed to repeat themselves in every chapter. The author also claims to outline how non-Jews can emulate the seven principles. However, he describes how to do this in less than two pages at the end of every chapter--There is not much detail or explanation. Moreover, it was fairly obvious that Silbiger had an intention to fix, change, and debunk all of the common Jewish stereotypes, as if his book alone would cause some sort of shift in the manner that Jewish people are viewed by the rest of the world.
I am very proud of my Jewish background, and this book is nothing more than a love letter from one Jewish person to the rest of the Jewish community.
Borrow this book from someone whom already owns it or look for it in your local library, but I would not recommend that you purchase it. If you desire success, I would highly recommend reading up on writings by Napoleon Hill, Robert E. Quinn, and Tracy Goss.

Book Description

The result of nearly twenty-five years of intensive study with two Native American dreaming societies, Dancing the Dream draws our attention to the four directions of the Medicine Wheel (East, South, West, and North) and the three unseen directions - Above, Below, and Within - and explains how each of these seven directions represents a specific path on the spiritual journey. In the East, we encounter the first stirrings of the spirit; in the South, the healing of relationships; in the West, we work to build self-esteem; in the North, we learn wisdom and the opening of the heart; Above represents the world of spirit; Below, the earth; Within, full awareness of the present moment.Most people will walk these paths in sequence. Some will never make it through all seven. Many will continue to move forward but continue to double back on earlier paths until they get things rights. But for those willing to walk all seven paths, there is the great reward of being able to see the world with the soaring vision of an eagle, fully aware and present to meet life's challenges with vision, wisdom and purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Once Again.......2007-01-10

Jamie Sams once again takes us on a journey through the layers of our spirit by bringing a complete understanding to the path we walk.

4 out of 5 stars Dancing the Dream.......2006-11-10

This book is easy to read, with sensible suggestions that can be incorporated into your life with relative ease.

5 out of 5 stars "I have endeavored to draw the map of consciousness that applies to every person on every path:" from the Author's note ........2005-09-14

I believe this statement reflects Jamie's chief goal for this book: this statement is listed in the authors note, preceeding the text. I don't think it is possible to draw a universal map of consciousness applicable to all humans. The chief reason being is that some folks never get past the 1st commandment let alone rise to metaphysical heights described in the text. Further, unless the reader has more than a beginners background in the metaphysical - or enjoys flipping back and forth between the text and the glossary - the reading can be difficult.

I gave this book five stars for what it DOES do, and that is a whole lot more than 99% of the metaphysical works I have read:

It paints a picture of the onesness of all existence, even though most of existence sees itself as seperate from everything else;

It bashes the notion that only enlighted earthly masters can achieve spirituality;

It clearly describes the downfalls of anyone being overimpressed with their spiritual progress;

It provides healers with a strong dose of reality: not to forget that therapy patients come to you because they are sick...there is pressure in them staying sick so you can make money;

It confronts head on the notion that a healer can see oodles of people on end: a handful may be too many;

It rightfully makes warriors out of beings immersed in the waters of daily life and it's endless tortures and misfortunes;

It superbly raises these tribulations to the status of lessons, encouraging hope and joy in the struggle;

It clearly points out that transformation is not a linear process;

It describes this circular process as seven different paths: this description allows readers to compare, contrast, and analyze later;

It describes the first hand accounts of Jamie in her path of transformation;

Read the book for yourself: you can't put it down.

4 out of 5 stars A Deep and Sometimes Difficult read.......2005-07-28

Sams book certainly provides the reader with much material to ponder. It's definitely not the type of book to be read in one sitting and it's not a real "page turner". Instead, the truths Ms. Sams explores are best digested slowly. Perhaps this is most appropriate since she is describing a spiritual journey that lasts a lifetime and more. The diagrams are helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual nourishment.......2005-04-28

This is a deep, thought-provoking book that is without a doubt evolutionary. Exploring the Seven Sacred Paths of Human Spiritual Development, Jamie Sams has presented a pattern for spiritual progress that can not be absorbed in one sitting, or even in one reading. I know I am going to have to read it again. A lot of it was over my head, and yet, without being academic. I could easily identify where I am spiritually today, and have some idea where I need to go next...still I know it is a spiral, and anything is possible. This book is an essential guidebook along the way that I think I'll be hanging on to. If you are looking for spiritual nourishment that doesn't turn into fluff, this book is for you.

Book Description

Marriages are under increasing strain these days, with over half of them ending in divorce. Conflict is seen as grounds to end a marriage, rather than an opportunity to grow closer to each other and to God. The Seven Conflicts is an excellent resource for equipping couples to learn to understand the true nature of their conflicts and deal with them in a way that will actually help their marital fulfillment. Couples will learn to identify their mutual dreams, put differences into perspective, understand each other's underlying motives, and work together as partners who are more in love than ever.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading!.......2006-11-03

We are using this book in a small group at our church. It is an invaluable resource to help not only marrieds who don't know how to handle conflict, but also for anyone -- friends, parents/children because conflict happens there, too. If you strive to apply the principles, you will find your relationships less tense and more fulfilling.

5 out of 5 stars wise, insightful book.......2003-02-14

This is not only a very wise book about marriage, but a book that will help everyone, married or not, to become better at understanding other people. It explores interpersonal dynamics in an insightful and often humorous manner. I'm single, but again and again I had "aha" moments as I thought of various arguments I had had or various arguments my various married friends had had.

The key is that often we don't fight about what we seem to be fighting about. Instead of an argument being about money, for example, it might really be about security: We can't afford that vacation, because we're trying to save for a house or for retirement. It has charts to analyze each spouse's response to the various conflicts, and a wonderful chapter on how to understand and communicate more effectively with the spouse who responds differently to a particular conflict.

A unique feature to this book: Many of the chapters have short summaries (called "quick takes") so that the reader's spouse can get an idea of what has been said without having to read the whole book.

Easily one of the most insightful of the 100 or so books I've read in the last year.

Book Description

In Patrick Morley's true sequel to The Man in the Mirror a man is taken beyond the day-to-day problems he faces and is confronted with seven major seasons of life that can make him or break him. The softcover edition includes a leader's guide for small groups.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2002-10-10

Morley really does break it down. I would accuse him of stealing my life story, but I know that most men struggle with these same issues.

This book is not for the faint of heart. You must be willing to be open and honest and look at your life from a diffent angel. Morley does an excellent job of driving home the hard truths through obvious examples and situations that he experienced himself.

All in all, a great read for any man who is looking for that pure joy only found in a close walk with Jesus. I am grateful for the opportunity to read it.

3 out of 5 stars Generalities.......2002-06-03

This is an okay men's book designed to generate reflection and discourse. I found that most of the generalizations were pretty close to what I experienced in my own life, although the recommendations/suggestions were not always that strong or helpful. Morley's prior book, Man in the Mirror, was a little better than this one. I picked up Seven Seasons because I thought there would be more in-depth discussion on the challenges that men face. True, there was a little more, but it was pretty much the same material as Mirror, with a touch here and there.

I found the weekend seminar that Morley's group sponsors to have had more of an impact than simply reading this book; however, the seminars also were designed towards setting up small group discussions on the material, which I really didn't care to participate in.

This book makes a good read one time through, and then looks good on any Christian man's bookshelf (along with all those other must-haves to impress the wife and guy friends). Borrow this from your church library or from a friend, but save your money and give it to mission work instead.

Peace Out.

4 out of 5 stars Scripture Centered Family Leadership.......2000-07-12

I received this book from a good friend during a particularly hard time in my life. Pat's ability to hammer home the real stuff that today's husband and father must deal with, and tie it back to God's word is unique and a real gift. A hundred times I saw myself in Pat's scenarios of life, dealing with frustrations, triumphs and tribulations.

This book is targeted to the open minded individual seeking to develop a lasting maturity that will make him a better husband, father, and follower of Christ. It might not be for those who lack patience or the willingness to submit to God's word and learn from the teaching of the Bible.

1 out of 5 stars Sunday school pablum.......2000-05-12

Listening to Morley (I bought this book on tape) is like attending an adult Sunday school class where the speaker is pedantic, shallow and long winded.

The title enticed me into thinking that Morley would have insights to share about a man's journey along the thinking of Daniel J. Levinson - NOT.

In a nutshell Morley preaches " accept Jesus, love your wife, pray for your kids and get a decent job." Save your time and money there is nothing her but warmed over Sunday school pablum.

5 out of 5 stars I found this book to be inspirational and informative........1998-10-18

This book was given to me by a friend interested in my spiritual well-being and overall happiness. Morley "has been there and done that" and this book clearly demonstrates how a right relationship with Jesus is necessary to accomplish anything. A good book for the man seeking understanding of where he's been and where he's headed.

Nicole is able to illustrate these encounters from Scripture in very real, modern day terms. They cut to the core of who we are as people and bring to light God as the focus. Great job, Nicole!
