Book Description

The essential handbook for healthcare workers.

Anatomy and physiology students require more than a passing grade, and have to retain what they learn as they pursue a career in the healthcare industry. With that in mind, this guide takes a fresh approach to the study of the human body and its functions, placing its emphasis on the connections between the body's systems as opposed to covering them each in isolation. With this book, students will actually learn anatomy and physiology rather than just memorize the facts.

3 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Anatomy and Physiology.......2007-10-02

It was pretty informative, probably not exactly what I was looking for but it certainly helps.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect companion to a traditional textbook.......2006-09-06

I don't think this book was ever made to replace your A&P text book. I'm in my second week of A&P and realized that I just couldn't fully grasp the concepts in my text book. So I bought this book to use as a companion to the text. What I personally do is read through the section in my text book, find it's equivalence in the complete idiot's guide, then connect the dots, then refer back to my text book's images for some supporting detail. This process has worked tremendously well for me! I'm giving it 4 stars because I've found a few errors in the book. Especially in the diagrams. For instance it labled cuboidal cells as squamous cells. Uhhh that's just plain wrong and misleading. So definitely read the text first and then focus the details with this lovely little thing. I love the way the author writes too. It makes me laugh out loud sometimes.

1 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not very useful.......2006-06-24

If you are looking for a book to help you out with physio, I recommend buying "The Physiology Coloring Book" (Kapit/Macey/Meisami). Lazaroff's book has several mistakes, and unlike the Coloring Book, it lacks the important details.

2 out of 5 stars A Good Idea, But Needs Work..........2006-04-07

Save your money. Whether you are an interested layman looking for an intro and overview, or you are a struggling A&P student looking for a map to find your way through the forest, you will probably find this book frustrating. I have had pretty good luck with other Idiot's Guides, but not this one.
This could have been a pretty good book. With some better editing and some better graphic design it would have been alright. The concept is a good one, create an easy reading A&P guide by eliminating (or at least explaining) most of the arcane terminology and massive tables of body parts that A&P students have to memorize, reduce the body systems to simple schematics, focusing on critical cycles and relationships between systems, and present it all in a breezy, fun style.
It should have worked, but failed. I realized a few chapters in that the book is useless unless you have a college level A&P text to refer to. It simply doesn't work as a standalone book. The effect is compounded by a lot of outright editing errors and design mistakes...
The graphics are just plain pitiful. Apparently, they blew their whole art budget on the computer generated color plates which are never referred to in the text, and they are so basic and lacking in any supportive text or labeling that you have to wonder why they bothered (OK, I know why they bothered, `curb appeal', you probably can't sell an anatomy book that doesn't have some color images in it, no matter how unrelated to the text they are). The remaining graphics are stock material that I would guess the author didn't have available while writing the text. The text frequently describes structures which are not shown in the graphics, giving the text a `house that jack built' feeling to it as the author describes one thing linked to another in a long series that is impossible to follow given the supporting material in the book.
The worst sin committed by this book is `redirection hell'. Invariably, when the text and the graphics do match up the graphic is on previous or following pages. The result being that while you read about the house that jack built you have to flip back and forth. Some triangulation between the author, editor, and graphic designer could help resolve this. Further, the author constantly refers the reader to other chapters in the book for related topics. This, I assume, is the promised holistic linking of bodily systems together. Hypertext is alright for wikipedia, but very difficult to read or manage in a printed book. I ended up indexing the book with color coded sticky tabs. Finally, the author does, in fact, refer you to college level A&P texts here and there, but I recommend you get one right away and at least skim it in parallel with this book. I had to borrow an old A&P text from my wife and mark that up with sticky tabs as well. The end result is you have to flip back and forth in this text and flip back and forth between this text and another A&P textbook to make sense of the material. That's a lot of work. For all that I could have just read the old A&P text book and skipped the hard parts.

3 out of 5 stars Anatomy --- of a book.......2006-03-24

The book is good for its purpose, however I think that more pictures need to be added. I am in an area of study where I know what a good chunk of the stuff in the book is, however seeing it is much more helpful.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2005-08-24

This book is a good introductory text for those who want to know more about the complex topic of climate change and "global warming". The book is easy to read and educational for those starting out in their examination of the field, though further reading on this topic will show that some of the core premises of the book are more contentious than the author seems to think.

A list of further readings is provided, though there are no sources listed for the arguments made by the aurthor, which can make it difficult for those who want to do their own fact-checking or to canvass alternative opinions. However, a whole (short) chapter is devoted to arguments against the impact of man and is consequences on the environment.

Unfortunately, like many modern texts on climate and the environment, the author seems wedded to the concept of biocentrality and "steady-state" systems, with no examination of the merits or pitfalls of such a position.

Still, overall, this book provides a good introduction to the general concepts and arguments around man's impact on global climate.

3 out of 5 stars Some decent basic information but clearly biased. .......2005-05-06

This book has some good basic information but the author
isn't really interested in having anyone read views that
don't buy everything the leftist NGOs or the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United Nations)
say (he states panelists are all "climatologists" which isn't true). He also states 100 Nobel Prize winners see global warming as a big problem caused by the "wealthy few." But most of these "winners" are not climate scientists and the Nobel Committee is very leftist oriented. In fact, the wealthier nations have the improving environments while poorer, socialist and communist nations (such as Zimbabwe) are usually worsening. His references for further reading don't include even one
so-called "skeptic" about global warming but includes Paul Ehrlich whose predictions have often been wrong. In the text, he briefly discusses Bjorn Lomborg with the clear implication he ISN'T an "environmentalist" which I doubt is true. He then doesn't bother to list Lomborg in the Index nor does he list the book as one to read though it has been widely praised. In his list of "Concerned Organizations," he lists every leftwing NGO but not one from those who have questioned the standard orthodoxy such as Cato or the American Enterprise Institute.

So, if you are interested in reading both sides of this issue,
here some suggestions for starters:

"The Life and Death of Planet Earth" by Ward and Brownlee, Univ. of Washington. "Frozen Earth" by Douglas McDougall, U.C.-San Diego. 1 out of 5 stars I am a Blind Cave Fish.......2007-09-07

The Parable of the Ichthropic Principle

Sixty meters underground, a river used to run through the limestone of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Because the limestone was uneven in density and porosity, the river carved an irregular channel, widening and contracting. Eventually, over a very long period of time, the surface of the land above underwent changes resulting from diminished rainfall. As the volume of water draining through the underground river decreased, the channel it had carved became a cave. Nonetheless, a trickle of rain still flowed through cracks and crevices, enough to maintain stable pools of fresh water in the lightless depths.
In one such pool lived a small school of fish of the family Characidae. Characids are an adaptable group, occupying many ecological niches of the planet Earth. The characids of this geologically isolated pool had several distinctive adaptations, the most unusual being that they were eyeless. Thus we can identify them henceforth as blind cave fish. Lacking sight, the blind cave fish were well equipped to detect vibrations of any sort through the sensory cells of their lateral lines, which was how they foraged for food as well as how they located each other for mating purposes. Fortunately, water is a superb transmitter of vibrations. Greater self-awareness would not have been adaptive in the bleak conditions of their pool, but if they'd possessed it, they would have had no reason to suppose that any other characids inhabited any other pool in this or any other cave, or indeed that any other pool in any other cave was inhabitable.
The blind cave fish had two rigid requirements for survival--oxygen and food. The oxygen in the pool was maintained at roughly the level they required by the dependable trickle of rain which replenished the loss of water through the porous limestone bed of the pool. Also, the water was cold--a constant forty-one degrees Fahrenheit--which of course allowed maximal oxygenation. Although the fish had no "knowledge" of it, a grave danger to their survival existed in two kinds of pollution: nitrates from their own metabolic waste products, and gradual mineralization from the influx of acid rain water seeping through the soil. Periodically, however, drenching storms would flood the land, refilling the underground river channel and flushing the pool. Most of the blind cave fish would be swept away to an uncertain fate, but enough would survive to rebuild their population. Even the most catastrophic flushing would not decimate them, since their eggs, which were adhesive, were always laid in protected chinks and cracks. Had the floor of the pool been smooth, or had the flooding carried other menaces into their cave, no doubt the blind cave fish couldn't have thrived as they did. It should be noted that the thick layers of rock above, which shielded them from hot sunlight, also shielded them from ultra-violet and other forms of radiation that might have threatened their survival.
The blind cave fish were dependent for their nutrition on another intricate and improbable set of circumstances. Since no light whatsoever penetrated the cavern, no photosynthesizing plants or algae could flourish. Nonetheless, populations of microbes and nearly microscopic arthropods shared the pool. These were the food source upon which the blind cave fish depended, though they supplemented their diet by scavenging the corpses of their own dead. In turn the arthropods and microbes were dependent on bat droppings for 100% of their nutrients. The bats, in huge numbers, infested a large dry cavern of the same cave. The only above-water outlet from their cavern to the fresh air above passed through the grotto of the pool, the ceiling of which was too encrusted with stalactites to attract bats to nest. Thus the quantity of guano the bats dropped in flight was always enough to sustain the pool's organisms yet never enough to poison the water. The blind cave fish were by far the largest and most metabolically active of these aquatic creatures. Having neither predators nor competition, they had ample reason to be happy with their lives--that is, had they had enough self-awareness to exhibit happiness--since each and every condition of their environment seemed specifically suitable to their needs, while any variation of those conditions would have made their life impossible. Indeed, the conditions in which they subsisted were so random yet so improbably assembled that it must have seemed to the fish--again granting them the self-awareness to consider probabilities--that the pool had been designed to provide for their existence. Allowing them just a bit more rationality than they truly possessed, logic would surely have suggested to the blind cave fish that where there is design, there must be a designer. No matter how much intellect we attribute to our three-inch long albino eyeless characids, however, it's clear they had no means of fathoming the nature of the designer, unless it were itself an inscrutable but omnipotent blind cave fish.

1 out of 5 stars Out With ID.......2007-08-14

The sooner we let these ancient myths fall away to sooner we'll get to where we're supposed to be (peace, understanding, progess, you know, the stuff we all want to be dealing with). So, let's put God up there with Zeus and the rest of them, and move on. God, Santa Claus, Easter Bunny... quaint, cute, all commercial and driven by greed and money. Hang it up. ID is another thinly disguised attempt at stupidity and backwardness.

5 out of 5 stars Interestingly comprehensible to people like you and me.......2007-07-03

A fascinating, useful, scholarly book, Understanding Intelligent Design comes from a well-qualified author. Professor and Episcopal chaplain, Christopher Carlisle has taken an active interest in the hot topic of ID (Intelligent Design). Blending The Complete Idiot's Guide's breezy format with his knowledge and teaching abilities, Carlisle skillfully makes this subject interestingly comprehensible to people like you and me.

This book opens with an explanation of ID, and similarities and differences with Creationism. At this point some may want to argue, but it will be worthwhile to keep reading - Understanding Intelligent Design presents information important to understand. The next section looks at the history of ID from the ancients through medieval science into the Age of Reason and on through American history. Physics, chemistry, and biology are then contrasted between the traditional science standpoint and the ID standpoint, two very different positions. Then Darwin comes into the picture, and it becomes apparent that ID does not agree with him. A discussion of outstanding differences on both sides of the debate and any possible resolutions sum up this thesis. The appendices are as absorbing as the main body of this volume, including: a glossary to help you understand things like the anthropic principle or punctuated equilibrium; two interviews, one with a noted proponent of ID, one with a noted opponent; and, a bibliography and listing of pertinent websites.

With cartoons and sidebars to encourage the reader and its interest-holding writing style, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Intelligent Design capably presents this subject, giving much needed information on an important contemporary focus. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book [...]

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Topic.......2007-06-07

This work is one of the best reviews of both sides of the controversy of the score of books that I have read on this topic. The very readable summary covers in some detail all of the basic issues that are central to the controversy. I was surprised how up-to-date the book was, even covering the Judge Jones Dover decision. The authors document the fact that a climate of fear now exists that prevents those who find problems with Darwinism that is not unlike that which existed during the McCarthy era and, until we are able to discuss the relevant issues the controversy will not be resolved, but will intensify. We must respectfully listen to each others side if we have any hope of resolving this issue. The authors stress that both sides are guilty of not listening to the other side and shows why. The chapter titled "Is Resolution Possible" is especially helpful in this regard. The book also includes a very helpful glossary and long interviews with one person on each side of the controversy to let each side have their say (page 262-290). This book will go a long way toward helping each side talk to one another. The science is also covered as well as the philosophical and social questions

1 out of 5 stars Book Is Far From Objective.......2007-05-08

...Also, it's self-contradictory. In a segment about atheist evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, the authors dismiss Dawkins' arguments entirely on the grounds that Dawkins is a scientist, not theologian, thus he is not qualified to speak (or write) on matters of God. What a convenient method for ignoring his case for a universe without design. Rather unexpected, coming, as it does, from a theologian pretending to write about science.
The book pretends to be a "balanced" look at the Intelligent Design controversy. Nonetheless, the book bulks the argument in such a way so as to give the impression that ID theory is somewhere on balance with Darwinian evolution by putting forward ID claims have long ago been addressed and falsified by scientists. Such claims as "Evolution runs contrary to the 2nd law of thermodynamics" show the willful ignorance of the authors. Many widely available articles explain how this asinine mis-interpretation of entropy depends on a closed system. The authors either have not done their research, or they are intentionally mis-representing the facts.
Every claim made in this book in favour of Intelligent Design has been refuted by scientists. Intellectual honesty demands that these refutations be dealt with if this book is to be considered balanced. This book does not do this.
This is a transparent attempt to make the "teach the controversy" position appear neutral and moderate while pushing the ID agenda.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!, IT EXPLAINS ALL DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF OUR BODY: THE BRAIN!, ALSO FOR ALL OF US WANNABE PSYCHOLOGISTS, IT'S GREAT TO KNOW WHAT THE BRAIN IS MADE OF AND HOW IT WORKS AND THEN ASSOCIATE IT WITH PSYCHOLOGY...

    5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2004-03-24

A great introduction to the brain. This book is a must read before you jump in to other books on neuroscience that may go in to many confusing details. It doesn't skip any aspects, going straight in to history, anatomy, and details of the brain.

Neuroscience is called a must for philosophers, by Patricia Churchland, in her book Brain-Wise Studies in Neurophilosophy.

I would also suggest greater knowledge of neuroscience to psychologists!

As I said, a great starting point, and it's not too "Idiot's Guide" to just be a starting point either... you can end with this book and be satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to neuroscience.......2004-03-24

If you're looking for an introduction to the brain, look no further! This book provides a brief history of neuroscience, to the anatomy of the brain, on to more intricate details. It will not leave you confused or with too many useless details.

A great read for philosophers who want to know more about the human condition, a must says Patricia Churchland(not this author) in one of her books.

A great read for psychologists who maybe need a refersher - or never learned too much about the anatomy.

4 out of 5 stars Science Fair Project Savior.......2004-02-13

I found this book very helpful, especially in my case. I am currently hard at work on a Science Fair project on how musical stimuli effect a mouse's ability to sucessfully navigate and memorize a maze. I found this book very helpful because it decribed all sections of the brain in detail, but so as not to be confusing. However, I did think that this book is pretty obscure, not many people are looking to understand how their brains work and/or have a hobby dealing with neurosciences. Book Description

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Biology is a life saver for those studying life sciences...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Biology is a lifesaver for anyone studying for a big AP biology test or working to finish Biology 101. Following a standard AP biology course curriculum that begins with life, cells, and molecular structure and ends with evolution, ecosystems, and ecology, it covers everything for the biology student in a clear, easy to understand manner.

4 out of 5 stars Good book -- not a pleasure reader! This takes time. .......2007-05-23

This book is very good; even though, I found it best used as a supplement. Personally, I used several items for Biology. With that said, this book does well and serves its place nicely. It's better than many texts, but if you're a visual or spatial learner, you'll want to supplement with interactive materials, DVD's, etc.

This book is fairly entertaining once you understand the language; however, it's not a pleasure reader. Don't expect to breeze through it in a few hours. It's very comprehensive covering topics from both Biology 1 and Biology 2.

My favorite chapter was Ecology -- ironic, considering it's the last chapter. Most disliked chapter? Chapter 3: Specialized Cell Structure and Function. I actually found Chapters 2 and 3 the hardest to complete in the entire book. Once you sludge through those, it becomes fairly entertaining. Maybe that's just because I didn't have a biology (or science in general) background first.

5 out of 5 stars wonder Book, wonderful Value.......2006-05-28

I liked the format of this book.
It helped me with my college biology I and II classes.
My favorite sections were evolution and ecology of course.
I feel like such a nerd studying so much.
Then again this book was quite needed along with
Patrick Leonardi's "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations"
This comes in three volumes with a lot of practice questions
which I tested myself before my actual college bio tests.

    Good Luck!

In search of learning more about Latinos. I was told to read this book for the NYS Teachers' Exam in Spanish. This book gives a very brief overview of various aspects of Latino culture and history. Topics include but are not limited to: family life, exploration, famous writers, Latinos in the US, religion etc. I learned a couple new things from the book but I found it to be very shallow. One must defenitly read other books inorder to get a deeper knowledge and understanding of Latin American History. I would recommend this book for complete "Idiots" who don't know anything about Latinos, otherwise you may be dissapointed.

Never was a book so appropriately named. The history and culture of the Latino (or the Hispanic, if you prefer) peoples is a complex and fascinating subject. This book is neither complex nor fascinating: it is oversimplified and hubris-filled dreck of the first division! Beware of books that take something interesting and make it boring. Who researched this thing-- Fred Flintstone? I'd recommend a better source of information on this subject, but that would be...ANYTHING.

4 out of 5 stars Superb, fun and informative.......2004-12-31

I've read several books recently on latino/hispanic history and culture while studying Spanish and this one is by far the best. It's way, WAY better than the Complete Idiot's Guide to Native American History, which totally sucked. It's even better than the more legit/serious sounding Everything You Need to Know About Latino History, which although good isn't organized nearly as well, and the questions in the Q&A format are written ... well, stupidly ... and the author has an obvious political/racial bias beneath his transparent attempt to appear the objective historian. Especially if you order this book online - which cuts the price - or get a used copy for under $5 this is great deal ... even if you pay the regular almost $20 price you'll be happy.

Okay, this is a decent guide to military careers, as far as the Idiot Guides go. If you are new to the military, or unfamiliar with the variety of opportunities available, then I would recommend you buy and read this book before seeing a recruiter. As a retired military officer I know that the military has shanged significantly in the past few years, with job classifications being revamped and many entrance requirements being adjusted to reflect the current demand for special forces and combat related career fields. This book needs to be updated and reprinted, but remains a good resource.

If you are interested in becoming an officer, you may want to read "How to Become a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Military," by Ron Taylor.

    Book Description

The most important technology of the 21st century.

Do a double-take with this one-of-a-kind guide. One of technology's most awe-inspiring and hotly-debated topics-cloning-is made clearer here than anywhere else. It runs the gamut from genetic- and bioengineering, to an even handed analysis of the moral, political, and ethical issues surrounding these technologies.

€ Claims of cloned babies, the Human Genome Project, and cryogenics continue to create headlines and spur debate
€ Congress will soon decide whether the federal government should have a say about cloning human cells for medical research

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique and informed!.......2004-09-13

Having been a human cloning activist since 1997, I expected this book would be another moralistic rehashing of today's contemporary debate.

It certainly covered all those arguments. However, it proved to be amazingly accurate, well researched and informative. This was one of the few books which clearly explained technical details that even I was not aware of--like the chromosonal reasons that made cloning human beings very difficult. (This problem was overcome in Korea by using cells surrounding the woman's egg for nuclear transfer.)

What makes this book truly remarkable is the manner in which it goes beyond explaining both the science and the moral arguments surrounding reproductive and therapeutic cloning. It examines bioengineering animals, the promise and perils of gene therapy, "BioFoods: Frankenfoods or a Cure for Hunger?", how pharming promises to transform medicine and even explores some of the thinking of Transhumanists and science fiction visionaries.

Yes, I objected to the dismal overview of reproductive cloning. However, the authors separated that highly touted debate from other areas where many propogandists frequently use
reproductive cloning and popular Hollywood images like "Boys from Brazil" as a club against serious scientists attempting to do important medical research.

The three pages about me contained a couple small errors, more of nuance than of fact. Having dealt with the press for years, I have found even Time Magazine can profoundly misrepresent one's beliefs. This book did much better.

If you have any doubts regarding any of the above, just type my name "Randolfe" into your search engine or visit www.clonerights.com

If someone wanted to explore a wide swath of emerging scientific technologies, this is the book I would suggest that they read.
